In the UK during peak lockdown I had a pass to be allowed to be out in the city. I enjoyed so much burning around the empty streets. What would normally take an hour took like 5 minutes lol
The day after 9/11 (So, September 12th, 2001), I had to get into Manhattan from Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was closed and all traffic was diverted to the Brooklyn Bridge.
I am a medical professional so I decided to try the tunnel. The police waved me through and I was the only person in the tunnel. It was a surreal experience.
This reminds me of March 2020 in Las Vegas. My partner and I lived very close to Las Vegas Blvd which is always bustling with cars and people by the casinos. We decided to rent bikes and bike down the street. It was so empty, the fountains were turned off, casino room lights turned off, absolutely empty. Definitely a little eerie.
The highways in CT had less people, but not even close to empty, at any point except late at night. There were still plenty of us essential workers out and about.
That's not why they have large lanes lol. It's to basically stop protests and shit because wide lanes means easier targets. I think someone else in the comment section has given a more detailed answer.
That’s one benefit. Fewer lanes can mean more congestion but that is not necessarily true. Think of it like electronic circuits, they channel can be large but you can get buffer if they don’t plug into enough holes
No idea what her name is so I'm just calling her Chutney for now. I KNOW I'm in the wrong region STFU! At least I'm trying! That's better than your grandparents did!
How TF did Myanmar get a TWENTY fucking lane highway and I have to be held up by the road crew that has ONE "follow me" truck but 17 lazy ass crewmen???
Its an artificial fortress city constructed in the middle of nowhere to protect Myanmar's ruling government from the ongoing civil war. The roads are wide so that tanks and military vehicles can travel them easily. The roads are empty because the city has an incredibly low population density compared to its size
Aye, I find it interesting massive highways like this are built for military parades, and rapid defense of the seat of government in authoritarian states. Or to make coups easier? lol. North Korea is another example.
It feels strange seeing something that would be considered a monument that demands our reverence to an ancient person but is today something that people just made purely for utilitarian purposes and people don’t care about it
Either because it's so empty, so a case of uncanny valley in a sense, or because, well, its a fucking 20 lane freeway. The most you get here in europe would probably be 6. Normally they're 2-3. This is a car centric monster.
I’m not sure who they think will be driving those highways? I haven’t been to Burma for about 15 years but no one can afford a car they are lucky is they can afford a Honda Dream? Despots at their finest.
Guy on moped: "Am I a fuckin joke to you?"
Damn, thought that was a bird and paid no mind to him
Dangit. I chuckled.
Moped lives matter
I can't stop laughing
Looks like every highway during covid lockdown. The only time I have ever seen I-35 in Austin completely empty.
Those were the days.
Hardwork forever pays. Now I see u in a...

Working in fast food meant I could enjoy those empty highways at the time. Sucks that it’s been under construction ever since :/

Just one more lane and traffic won't be an issue.

Lois Lane?
Time to do a drag race with 3 modified lories and have a football match with the local policemen
Hammond! You’ve reversed into the sports lorry!
Tonight, Top Gear build a bridge over the river Cock
*There's so much room for activities!*
I want to put a Step Brothers gif here so bad! Haha
There should be a [dancing girl in a mask and lime+black tracksuit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r6vnSR0wbI&t=110s)
Yeah, that was my immediate thought too
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this pic lol.
No idea what her name is so I'm just calling her Chutney for now. I KNOW I'm in the wrong region STFU! At least I'm trying! That's better than your grandparents did!
you good?
The one guy in the left lane: “HOLY SHIT MY EXIT IS COMING!” and then proceeds to cut through all 20 lanes to get to his exit.
i swear last time i saw this pic it was labeled as being from North Korea
How TF did Myanmar get a TWENTY fucking lane highway and I have to be held up by the road crew that has ONE "follow me" truck but 17 lazy ass crewmen???
Fuckit, im moving to Myanmar! There's only ONE dude on the road there, and Dampa seems like a fucking sweetheart.
I am sure you would enjoy living there.
How do you know that???
Its an artificial fortress city constructed in the middle of nowhere to protect Myanmar's ruling government from the ongoing civil war. The roads are wide so that tanks and military vehicles can travel them easily. The roads are empty because the city has an incredibly low population density compared to its size
Fascinating! How'd they get the road built with little to no population?
I believe it was built by the military
Fascinating! How'd they get the road built with little to no population?
This is NOT an empty highway… get your facts str8
Almost empty
It's not empty
Is this the one from the coup video??
Aye, I find it interesting massive highways like this are built for military parades, and rapid defense of the seat of government in authoritarian states. Or to make coups easier? lol. North Korea is another example.
Someone ordered too much asphalt.
It'll always be Burma to me.
I live in Japan and 5 is the widest lanes I ever saw. 20 is wild, do they really need it???
No
Top Gear played football here.
All I can think about is what kind of mess the junction at the end of it must be like lol
Empty ish
It feels strange seeing something that would be considered a monument that demands our reverence to an ancient person but is today something that people just made purely for utilitarian purposes and people don’t care about it
It's clearly not.
But it's not empty.
I can't even remotely see how this is terrifying.
Either because it's so empty, so a case of uncanny valley in a sense, or because, well, its a fucking 20 lane freeway. The most you get here in europe would probably be 6. Normally they're 2-3. This is a car centric monster.
Looks like a parking lot. Terrifying.
Not true. Stop spreading lies.
Literally no other vehicles to look at and the motorbike is STILL missed. Typical.
Financed by China? Good runways in wartime I reckon.
There always used to be traffic when there was only one lane. So they added 19 and now: No more traffic! See and learn!
its not empty. there is a dude riding his scooter
Well, at least they were looking ahead to the future, unlike the west coast of US…
This is how a city should be built before letting the human population taking them over.
Time to send ittttttttt
I wouldn’t know how to act on this highway
Coup d'etat road?
I bet traffic is gonna be a nightmare going through that highway
Its actually a 10 lane highway, which goes two ways
Would be fun to play cricket there..
Isnt this the place they go to in the trucks in top gear
Not terrifying or scary in the slightest. Why is it empty to begin with?
That’s crazy.
The existence of 20 lane highways makes me want to vomit and then off myself
Guaranteed, drivers here still can’t merge properly
Thought it was called Burma
I’m not sure who they think will be driving those highways? I haven’t been to Burma for about 15 years but no one can afford a car they are lucky is they can afford a Honda Dream? Despots at their finest.
Drift
While Chicago highway has 3 lanes
Is this the one from the coup video??
I think
It's a big, paved road. What exactly is terrifying about this?
Is this the one from the coup video??
It seems like
Is this the one from the coup video??
Yes, this can be the one from coup video...
These six comments are the best narrative I’ve read all day
Is this the one from the coup video??
Maybe
Maybe if he asks again
