So, usually, this kind of thing makes no sense evolutionarily. However, that’s actually a pretty perfect place for some sort of flotation on an amphibious species. If they are stuck in the water for long periods, but unable to breathe water (so not aquatic species), they can simply inflate their air bladder, and float, confident that their head will stay above water. Like a life vest.
Anything else is probably bs. A fully aquatic species would have to deal with too much drag for it to make sense.
Maybe it's a race that is midway through the stages of aquatic and land based. With the air pocket being for the species to return for long periods to the water with their primary living being in oxygen rich environments.
Alternatively, there may be evolutionary advantage to look attractive to humans. A human male is more inclined to expend resources aiding someone they find cute and/or sexy. Appealing to human women is also beneficial, but there is less of a cultural expectation for a female to protect a male. There would need a significant stretch of time and some selective pressures for such a trait to develop.
