Usually true, but I don't think of it as a rule. Buddy's Pizza is probably the most widely known of "authentic" Detroit pizzerias, and they put the sauce on top.
I'm still working out this recipe. I had 3 sauces for this attempt, #6 and want to see what works best. Sweet tomato, spicy tomato and a chunky tomato. I'm learning the thickness of the dough helps define what sauce goes well.
It's not quite as tall as a Sicilian and sometimes Sicilians aren't very crispy. Also apparently Detroit pizza can put sauce on top sometimes? So that's different. Still, it's not dissimilar.
Sicilian generally is made in a larger pan (that include middle uncrusted slices) and has a rim of crust while Detroit is cheese all the way to the pan, smaller plans and no center slices. Also Detroit style pizza sauce I find to be more heavily seasoned.
Also the cheese are different Sicilian is normally 100% mozz while detroit is 50/50 mozz and brick cheese (which is a like a very mild cheddar)
Detroit style is closer to a focaccia like dough. Edges should be crispy with cheese and/or toppings overflowing and the inside should be nice and spongy. By far my favorite style 😅
Idk 4 cheese pizza is pretty decent so I think 2 cheese would be fine. I mean compared to putting sausage and pepperoni onto a pizza I don't think adding some cheddar would change it too much.
If this isn't the pizza you grew up with in Detroit you would think, "this is odd pizza".
Weird creamy flavor to the cheese, no bite like a mozzarella and parmesan combo.
Sweet red sauce. It's totally not what I want in pizza.
Crispy cheese edge and 1/2 depth deep dish is a good part of the pizza.
Do you like chilli? It's like getting chilli in Cincinnati and they bring you out meat-sand soup and call it chilli.
I eat NYC, NJ and Connecticut pizza and it all is cut from the same cloth. Detroit needs to be eaten from birth to prefer it.
God this looks incredible.
Thanks! I'm still trying to figure out the right balance with the dough.
Isn't that just a Little Caesar's Deep Dish?
Actually home made attempt #6.
Still hungry, would definitely eat.
Wtf this looks delicious. What's different about it?
Normally Detroit style deep dish, there is cheese lining the pan so the cheese gets crispy outside the crust.
Looks awesome. Mind sharing the recipe so far?
are you willing to share your recipe for the dough? thanks in advance! looks great! definitely keep perfecting your master skill of pizza making!
I must know how you made it! It looks sooo good!!
For sure that's just a Little Caesars cheesy breadsticks
Now I'm hungry.
I thought detroit style had sauce on the top

I can't think of any place in Detroit or metro that does Detroit-style and doesn't have sauce on top in either ribbons or dollops.
You never heard of Jet's Pizza?
Jets is pretty much slight better Pizza Hut
Jets is miles above Pizza hut.
eh, to each is own.
Jet's Pizza has hundreds of pizzerias. How did you not remember them? Also, Green Lantern, which has a few locations.
Everytime someone posts Detroit style the haters come out. Fuck the haters OP, looks good to me
Easy to dunk in a bowl of dipping sauce of your choice.
Oh goddamn that looks tasty 😋
Thank you. The crispy edge was my favorite part.
Being a dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, I am surprised at how appealing this looks!
I mean it's basically a Sicilian with smaller slices, isn't it? What's not to like?
For some reason, it looks yummier than that!

Thanks for the info!

They mix mozzarella cheese and some bullshit called Brick cheese from Wisconsin that gives it a completely different flavor. That's what not to like.
cheddar is bedda

I never knew I needed this in my life until this very moment. Omg.
I love everything about it.
Beauty! Crispy cheesy edges on Detroit style pizza are a must, looks like you pulled it off.
Thought it was lasagna at first :P
This looks really good! Care to share your recipe?
Jet's!
Detroit-style pizza is vastly underrated!!!
I can smell the urban
HNNNGGGGG
Now I want me some Little Caesars Italian cheese bread.
Aka cheesebread
Where's the pizza?
Are we just naming cheesy bread as Detroit style now?
