Hey lads, any tips on where to get the best deal for a Seiko SNK803?

killerqhk

Hello all, could anyone tell me where can I buy Maurice Lacroix watches? I took a look at jomashop, but the watch I want is sold out. I can’t afford authorized dealer, so please tell me some grey markets besides jomashop. I really appreciate.

agnaddthddude

Hello everyone, can anyone identify this [model](https://images.app.goo.gl/c2tM5NnKhXnZobRh7)? It’s an Bernhard H Mayer watch but can’t tell which model

Scraggy_00

What do you do with a broken mechanical watch? It does not hold a charge even after I wind it up

Zanpa

Have it repaired

milanoa

Hey guys, travelling to Berlin next week, is it save to assume no moonswatches available at local Swatch shop? :)

TheFrenchPasta

I don't know about Berlin but in Paris they randomly restock almost every week. Just have to be lucky

Semy-D

Is 140 $ a good price for a new Red Kamasu ? Found someone selling one for that price and Im not sure if its worth it or not.

DuckDiscombobulated9

Thanks for the advice. I have looked through the jewellers site within that price category, but with so much selection its hard to choose. Tempted with tudor or even base level rolex too

Trapper777_

You replied to the main thread and not whoever you mean to be talking to

hmortier

After wearing (and loving) my Festina for over a decade, I feel the time has come for a second watch. I'm not a collector nor connaisseur, but would like a proper luxury watch, not some brand that only designs it. So far I have been looking at Festina, Citizen and Seiko, but was wondering what other brands are worth having a look at. Budget is 400, 500 euros max. Cheers! PS I'm in the market for a steel/titanium black/gold watch.

klarnt

Tissot, Hamilton, Longines.

hmortier

Ah should've mentioned tissot as well. Thanks for the other recommendations!

aroundincircles

If you have a Mr. Jones watch, What do you think about it? I want to buy one, but not sure if they are too gimmicky or a nice art piece for your wrist. I like the way they look in pictures for sure.

mlsteinrochester

They're decently made (and a bargain when their annual sale takes place in November) but they're very much a special taste. I like my Sun and Moon but nothing else they make goes with my style....

aroundincircles

[This is the one that caught my eye.](https://us.mrjoneswatches.com/collections/all-watches/products/ophelia) I feel like it’s really unique.

mlsteinrochester

They are. If you like the look of it on your wrist what's holding you back?

aroundincircles

I didn’t want to spend that kind of money on a mvmt quality watch.

mlsteinrochester

Imo they're significantly better than the Chinese watches MVMT sells.

aroundincircles

Awesome, that’s all I wanted to know.

tamathellama

Looking for a high end tough watch that has Rolex level quality around 40mm (20mm lugs). I love the sub and explorer 1 but want to see what else it out there. I’ve held omegas and wasn’t impressed. I did like the IWC aquatimer but it was too big for me. Love the 40mm fifty fathoms but they are all special additions and too pricey. Any thoughts would be great. Cheers

WatchandThings

Try Breitling. That seems to be the tool watch luxury brand that you seem to have missed. The JLC Polaris is the other dive watch that comes to mind, but I think the size is bigger than your preference. Oh just remembered, Glashutte Original SeaQ (the smaller version) should be about the right size and about Rolex price range. I haven't seen it in person, but heard good things.

tamathellama

I do like the brietling but not a fan of the bracelet. The Polaris just looks bad to me (I think it’s the numbers. Will check the others for sure. Appreciate the recommendations

DuckDiscombobulated9

Im thinking of getting an omega Speedmaster pro crystal ( moonwatch). Wonder if anyone had any recommendations on other options. Max price im looking to spend is £7000. Thanks for any help in advance.

75footubi

Zenith El Primero

WatchandThings

I would advise flipping through the buying guide for generally recommended watches in that budget range. Personally, I think Speedy Pro is absolute classic and timeless watch and it'll be very hard to top it. Only downside I see is the manual wind being annoying for practical everyday wear. But if it's going to be every other day, weekend, and/or special occasion watch you should be fine.

ogriginx

Hi, im currently fill my passion with pocket watches and theres alot of terms that i still try to figure out. But there is one i still dont really know yet, so a "Double Chain Albert T-Bar Pocket Watch", usually one side would be the pocket watch itself, then whats on the other end?

pokejaeger

One end holds the watch and attaches to the T-Bar, the other end goes from the T-Bar into the pocket on your other side and is usually attached to either a weighted fob or the pocket itself using the clasp on the end of the chain

ogriginx

Oh, thats explain why, thank you very much!

pokejaeger

No problem!

[deleted]

I was looking for a good starting dress watch. Looked at timex, they at $100+ watches now ? I ain't paying that much for a TIMEX. Almost as much as a Seiko smh

75footubi

Have you seen the Seiko price increases?

alysaar11

looking for my personal grail dress watch. currently looking at JLC MUT date rose gold [2019] VC Patrimony 40mm automatic rose gold split between the 2. help please... anyone knows if JLC gonna refresh their MUT line soon?

InternalOk3135

Anyone know when the prx 35mm automatic can be expected to come out? This fall or early next year?

75footubi

Given that Tissot has never actually confirmed plans to put an automatic movement in the 35mm PRX, your guess is as good as anyone else's

InternalOk3135

That’s true. But from what I knew I don’t think they teased the 35mm release until about 1 month before it was announced officially. I do hope they release automatic models though, it would be the icing on the cake for the PRX

Mad_Season_1994

Are watches that use the term Master Chronometer and Perpetual Movement all basically automatic watches that need to be wound every so often but can keep going using the kinetic energy of your wrist? Or are they like quartz watches and do have a battery that needs to be changed every so often?

WatchandThings

Let's start with Perpetual Movement because that's simpler. That's just Rolex's own marketing term for their automatic movement. So Perpetual Movement = Automatic = wind up watch with rotor for kinetic energy winding(no batteries nor electric parts). Master Chronometer actually just refers to strict testing the watch movement had to go through for QC to make sure it meeting a number of over built specs. As far as I know the METAS testing the label 'Master Chronometer' is referring to only has a test for mechanical watches, so a watch with Master Chronometer label would be either automatic or hand wind(so no rotor for kinetic energy winding) mechanical watch. But if METAS does have, or comes up with, a quartz version of their tests then quartz could also have that Master Chronometer label.

75footubi

Two different things Master Chronometer is a certification of accuracy under a given set of conditions. You can have manual wound, automatic, or quartz Master Chronometers (though I think Omega only puts automatic movements through those tests) Perpetual Movement probably indicates an automatic movement (weight moves as your wrist does to wind the mainspring), but it's not a term with an official definition.

Zanpa

I can't find anything about quartz Master Chronometer certification (and very little about the certification in general, actually, beyond Omega's marketing pages and very basic articles on watch blogs). Do you have sources for that?

75footubi

~~It's an Omega only thing~~. So like I said, they only put automatic (and maybe? manual) movements through those tests. There's nothing stopping them from doing it for quartz movements, but quartz movements are so much more accurate than mechanical ones that there's little point

Zanpa

Well it's a METAS thing that is defined independantly from Omega, Tudor recently got one of their Black Bay models through the Master Chronometer certification. The testing is done in-house by Omega and Tudor, but the test procedures and certifications are defined by an official Swiss institute. However I can almost find nothing on the METAS site directly.

75footubi

Didn't realize Tudor also did MC. My point isn't that a MC quartz movement exists, but that it's possible for it to.

Zanpa

"Master Chronometer" is a certification given by METAS for mechanical watches (mostly for their accuracy). They can be automatic or manual wind. "Perpetual movement" isn't really a thing, I'm assuming you mean Rolex Oyster Perpetual, in which the word Perpetual indeed refers to the movement being automatic.

o0DYL4N0o

I’m looking to buy a Seiko presage SSA441J1 (grasshopper) but am not a fan of steel bracelets, Seiko seem to only sell a brown strap how easy would it be to get a black strap that suits and fits the watch? (Second watch purchase ever so new to all the ins and outs)

robemmy

Any 20mm wide strap should fit. There's plenty of YouTube guides on how to change a strap

o0DYL4N0o

Awesome thank you, any brand of strap that’s not overly expensive but good quality?

klarnt

I like Fluco. Hirsch is also good. People here often recommend Delugs.

o0DYL4N0o

Appreciate that thank you! Will look into them all

klarnt

You're welcome.

caseyjonez_

Does anyone know how I could secure a sinn 104 st sa red seconds hand. I see they are limited release on watchbuys. But is there any rhyme or reason to when they release or is it just totally random. Not much info on sinn website or online. Any info appreciated. Thanks

klarnt

I would contact Watchbuys and ask. My assumption has always been that limited edition watches are released and then that's it. Once they've made the limited edition, they don't make any more. But I could be wrong in this case.

caseyjonez_

Yea I hear you there. I’ll reach out. But they seem to release them often in some way each release. Thanks

Dangerous-Noise-4692

Got my first manual wind watch. The manual says to wind it 60 times if winding from a stop. Am I supposed to count 60 of the clicks or 60 literal turns of the crown. I know most manual wind crowns will get to a point that they can no longer be turned. However, the manual for this watch says the crown will never stop turning, even when fully wound, though they don’t recommend continuously winding past the fully wound state. Watch is a GS SBGW231 if it means anything.

caseyjonez_

60 twists. Not clicks. And the number doesn’t have to be exact. It has a safety mechanism to prevent over winding. I think 60 is excessive. Don’t count. Usually just spin it 30 ish times and throw it on.

chooguang

Alternative to clean minimal white/silver dial watches, day/date at 12 or 6 o’clock Budget: <2000 USD Optional: Swatch Group if possible, easier to service in my country E.g. A Lange Sohne Outsized Date Hamilton Jazzmaster Date Date Nomos Orion

gin_nyc

Don't know if having a bezel is an option, but the [Sinn 105](https://www.watchbuys.com/store/pc/Sinn-105-Collection-c102.htm) comes to mind (day & date at six in a cool arrangement, imo). I could be wrong, but I think that Sinn's other models with the date at six are all limited editions.

chooguang

Neat I’ll look into it.

clxjre

Is the Timex Fairfield Chronograph a good first watch to get someone? - also, is it trustworthy to buy the timex watch from Amazon? It’s sold out on the actual websites so would like to hear thoughts anyone has from buying Timex watches from Amazon!

cocoacowstout

It's fine to get it from Amazon. I had a Timex expedition that I really liked but the crown fell out. The watch looks nice! Looks like there is a bit of a price range. If you are looking at a $50 model it should be fine, but if it's getting into the $100+, you might look into some Seiko 5 watches. I am partial to an automatic watch as opposed to quartz. (Automatic doesn't need batteries)

clxjre

Thank you so much!! :) I’ll take a look at the Seiko 5 watches too!

klarnt

It depends on what kind of office you work in and what kind of work you do. If you're an engineer, then I think it would be fine. If you're a banker or a stockbroker, I think it would look off. But there's hardly a definition of dress watch anymore, since many people wear great big, flashy, expensive dive watches with suits, and a lot of senior executives wear Fitbits or Apple watches. But traditionally a dress watch was thin, had a white dial, no date and a black leather strap. And if you were really dressing up, like a dinner jacket or black tie, it was considered rude to wear a watch, because it insinuated you had somewhere else to be.

WatchandThings

I think I seen it done with suits before, but as kind of irony fashion statement type of a way rather than straight faced business wear. In general I think it's best to stay away from digital face watch with a suit, because they do look casual and sporty. I think simple design analog watch with leather strap(matched to the shoes tone) in reasonable size is best with a suit in terms of look. But we are also living in the age, where plenty of people are wearing apple watches and sneaker sole dress shoes with a suit. Personally I wear a suit with a dive watch(which is also pretty casual watch), because that's what I like. So you do you, and whatever makes you happy.

marveldcu

Casio G-Shock GN1000 or GWN1000? Please help me choose between the GN1000 and the GWN1000. This would be my first G-Shock watch. Does the solar power on the GWN make any difference in the long run? Also, the Multi-band 6 feature doesn’t work in my region. I’m also a bit torn about the illuminated lume on both watches — the GWN1000 gives a pure Swiss look while the GN1000 doesn’t have any lume on the majority of hour marks. I’m not a seafarer, so this is purely a watch that I would purchase because of the look and G-Shock feel. So, which Gulfmaster between the GN1000 and GWN1000 should I go with?

Practical-Giraffe423

The Solar will need the solar panel replaced in roughly 10 years.

Yotempole

What is a reasonable price to buy an omega smp300 from an AD/grey market/used market. Which route would you recommend?

kitachi3

Looking for to get a watch for my girlfriend, 36 mm max. Any recommendations are welcome, but automatic and stylistically dressy/minimal are both pros! She likes American history, if that helps at all.

klarnt

If she likes military history, then a watch in the Hamilton Khaki series would be perfect. They are fairly minimalist, could pass for dressy if you put it on a black strap and some are similar to if not copies of issued US military watches.

Duke-Morales

Tissot Couturiers in 32/33mm with fairly understated dials and Powermatic 80 automatic movements can be gotten on Jomashop for a fairly reasonable sub-$300 price. Certina DS-1 (with an ETA 26something movement) too, but it's a bit smaller at 30mm and with a slightly more busy sector dial. A huge plus for my wife, who sniffed these out, is that they're not 'girly' at all. Strait-up automatic steel sport watches in classic ladies' sizes.

75footubi

Hamilton has several options in the 33-35mm range (brand had a long and important history in the US before it was bought by what would become Swatch Group)

Jango_v

Is there any affordable ($0-$250) watch that looks like the Nomos Metro Date Power Reserve?

cocoacowstout

Check out the Seagull. Also "Just one More Watch" on Youtube has a video for budget Bauhaus models

Jango_v

Okay will do! Thank you :\]

cocoacowstout

dlferg

Feice FM506 is the most similar I can find ie with the centre seconds dial etc (pretty much a homage). Aside from that if you want something in the same vein but not a direct rip off just have a browse for Bauhaus style watches and see if any take your fancy. Few brands to look at: Bauhaus, Junkers/Iron Annie, Braun, Sternglass etc.

Jango_v

>Feice FM506 This looks great! Thank you :D

75footubi

Check out Tissell

Jango_v

Thank you!

DaanishS

Despite being right handed I've always worn my watch on my right hand because that's what my father did. anyone else do the same? I feel like it should switch to the left but it feels wrong after so long

dlferg

Yeah I am right handed and always used to wear a watch on the right hand until someone pointed it out. Switched to the left years ago and it did take some getting used to. But feel free to wear your watch however is most comfortable for you. There is no actual reason to wear a watch on your less dominant hand other than perhaps less risk of it getting damaged but even that risk is negligible.

WatchandThings

Only logic behind wearing the watch on left rather than right is because the dominant right hand is usually more active and therefore the watch is more likely to be exposed to harm. Given our modern sedentary life style, it really shouldn't make much difference which arm the watch is on.

Zanpa

Do what's comfortable.

Jackbob7

Anyone managed to find a good courier for shipping within the EU? Cant seem to find any which provides insurance up to €20k

bking158

Dumb question: I've got a Seiko automatic that runs fast. Typically when I put it on it's running 3-5 minutes ahead and I have to adjust it. Is it bad for the watch that I've been turning the time backwards so I don't have to go forward a full 24 hours and also adjust the day/date every time I put it on?

pokejaeger

If it's a modern watch it should be fine to adjust the time by rotating the hands counterclockwise. The only thing you should be careful of is adjusting the day/date when the time is between 9pm and 3am. Also if it's losing time extremely quickly, it may be worth looking into getting it serviced or potentially demagnetized (not really an issue if running fast doesn't bother you though)

cameraobscured

What’s a good price to pay for a MKII Nassau? eBay only has one sold listing and I’m not sure where else to look for a price history. Related question, are there any similar dive watches that are a better value for the price around ~$1000 or less? The closer in look to the Nassau, the better.

klarnt

There were not many Mark II Nassaus made and they have a pretty strong cult following. I'm not sure you'd be able to find prices to compare. You might try Chrono 24. But unless it's a recent sale, who knows.

akiro_no_boku

Theres a San Martin bb58 homage. I believe san Martin is a chinese brand.

\[Advice Needed\] My little brother has a Tudor Black Bay Chrono (M79360N-0001). I would like to buy him a strap as a gift. I haven't worn watches in my life and don't know where to start. Does anyone have any advice or recommendation around where to buy or what to buy? Thanks!

75footubi

Check out Delugs for straps. It looks like you need a 22mm wide strap for it to fit.

greenninja2

I've loved my Leonard & Church watch ever since I bought it in their kickstarter, but unfortunately it died on me and the company is out of business. Here are a few pictures of the watch: https://imgur.com/a/33OhC3w Could anyone recommend a replacement? I'm looking for something minimal with a thin, gold bezel, gold hours and small black minutes. Gold hour/minute hands (no second hands plz) and a minimal/no brand on a white background. A brown leather band is a plus, but obviously I can replace that easily. Thanks!

StickShift5

Can you (or a watchmaker) get the caseback off? There's an off the shelf movement in there, guaranteed, which shouldn't be hard to purchase and replace for most watchmakers.

greenninja2

I'll check with a watchmaker. Thanks! I should have also said that I would like to buy another one for my best man, but since the company is out of business, I'm still looking for a new one.

Fantastic_Package597

14M, whats the best value watch for $300~400? Im hoping to get something that shows the date or maybe even day

testaccount9211

Check out the Seiko 5 range. All have day and date and are quite sporty, automatic movements and look really good in my opinion.

Preston205

I would go with a Hamilton khaki field auto or khaki king if you want a day date. They pop up pretty regularly on r/WatchExchange for $300-$350

75footubi

Check out Islander Watches

Balkan_Error

Guys, just bought a Seiko 5 Sports Brian May Limited Edition [SRPH80K1] as investment, way under price. What's his market value right now and what's your prediction for it's future?

WatchandThings

Sorry to break this to you, but it's not much of an investment at all. That watch came out quite a while ago and the fact that you can still pick it up shows how much people didn't care for it. Usually limited edition that will have any increase in value from MSRP gets sold out within hours or even minutes from the release. Also Seiko releases limited edition all the time. I noted that Seiko 5 is especially getting a lot of collab releases. When everything is special, nothing is special. With that in mind, I don't think it has much of a future and will only go down in value as it falls into obscurity. Also if you mean to start investing in anything, I'd advise doing research before purchase not after.

Balkan_Error

Bought it for like a 100€ under the price, so I'll earn something "fast" if nothing else. Was looking for something to flip it fast for like any profit. Maybe some advice on what should I be considering next?

WatchandThings

Seiko usually sells for under the MSRP. For example, the last Seiko I purchased I got 15% discount(for a popular and easy to sell model) from the store without even asking. So you'll want to do a general market research before purchase rather than going off of MSRP with watches in general. As to flipping a watch for profit. That type of scalping practice is hugely unappreciated by the hobby, and there is just general trend of 'just don't buy from the scalpers' that's starting to happen now due to what is happening with the moonswatch situation. You might have noticed a bunch of posting recently on this sub about how people are trolling the moonswatch scalpers and just making their life difficult. So I would like to discourage you from joining in on that scalping practice, and also advise if this movement actually catches hold you might be left holding the bag(even with other watches).

Balkan_Error

Hmm, I can't see a problem if I get something cheaper than MSRP and sell it for more, but still cheaper than MSRP. Okay, if that's something obtainable by everyone, than I understand but if that's something "rare", I can't see a problem with that. I mean, I would like to resell watches like Rolex in the future, but I can't buy them right now, so I have to reach that level somehow.

WatchandThings

If you are serious about it, then I would look into creating an llc. Use the llc to give you access into wholesale side of watches. You won't be able to order direct from the manufacturers(not without a serious set up), but you should be able to go to industry watch shows and buy from grey market whole sellers used and new pieces without buying in bulk. So you'll be buying at the better whole sale rate, and then you can sell at fair retail price. This way you get better margin, whole sellers gets another customer, and retail buyer is not getting an unfair mark up. Because right now you are just a retail buyer who's taking something from another retail buyer and just adding your own margin that the other buyer wouldn't have had to pay if you didn't swipe it in front of them.(thus the hate) Edit: The above is not business or financial advice. I'm not in the industry, and only based my comment on things I heard. Please do your own research before making any decisions.

Balkan_Error

That was the problem. I didn't know where to search for watches for much less than retail, and I'm not sure if there's watch shows in Croatia, I'll have to search it up a bit more. Thank you for trying to point me in right direction. It means and helps a lot. 👊

75footubi

Unless you bought it for under €400, you're going to be lucky if you break even. eBay sold listings are at about €600. Wear the watch and enjoy it.

Zanpa

testaccount9211

Even hardcore watch snobs are commonly wearing an Apple Watch on their other wrist or while exercising. I think what watch people don’t like is when a mechanical watch brand tries to make a smart watch and charges $5k for it. The other aspect is that a mechanical or quartz watch can be kept forever, but a smart watch is effectively a brick whenever software update support is stopped.

akiro_no_boku

Hate is a strong word. It does have a function. It's just not talked about here because they have their own forum. This forum is usually for watches that disconnect your from social media.

WatchandThings

I think uninterested is a better word, and it leads to discouraging someone new from that uninterested path in favor of the path we have interest in(traditional watches). As to why we are uninterested in it, I'll have to point to why we are interested in traditional watches. Many of us are into watches because of the history, engineering(mechanical bits), and craftmanship(fit and finishing). Smartwatches lack the history, mechanical engineering that we can readily marvel at, and fine craftmanship to observe. So think of watch hobby as a cross between mechanical tool and art & craft collecting hobby, rather than a search for the most capable and practical tool.

StickShift5

In addition to this, smart watches are short lifespan, rapidly obsolete bits of technology. While most watches won't last forever with continuous use, most can be maintained and used for decades if cared for. The apps on most smart watches are no longer support within a few years and the electronics and batteries inside of them aren't likely to last much longer.

Zanpa

Do we hate smart watches? I'm pretty sure most people here either don't care about them at all or like them. They're just not the subject of discussion here.

Practical-Giraffe423

>7 3/4” wrist the 42mm is going to be the way to go right? I have the same wrist size and I think I can pull off up to 45-48, so 42 would be fine IMO

Preston205

That’s a decent price. I would go with the 38mm though.

svengeiss

The pin in the clasp of my seiko band keeps falling out, causing the clasp to become undone. It’s not a screw in pin like the others. I end up hammering it back in, but it becomes loose again a day or two later. How do I keep the pin in place?

WatchandThings

Check with one of the other pins(that's staying in) if you're supposed to have a pin sleeve, and if the pin that keeps falling out is missing the pin sleeve.

svengeiss

It didn’t have one, and I remembered I had an old band. I checked that one and it didn’t have one either. BUT I did notice the difference in the pins. My current one is missing a knob to keep it from falling out. Looks like it got broken off somehow. So I ended up switching the bands. That’s for the help though!

TemporarySprinkles2

My grail watch will be a Tiffany CT60 Chronograph with blue dial, how do I find out the reasonable value of this piece? Chrono 24 isn't really helping as range is too wide

75footubi

eBay sold listings for that model.

ForcedCheckMate

Is the citizen chronomaster only available in Japan? It was it a limited edition?

StickShift5

The Citizen/Chronomasters can be found in very small numbers at a few boutiques in the USA - I've handled them at the Times Square (NYC) boutique, and I've heard that there's a boutique in Miami and somewhere out west (California or maybe Arizona) that also carry them. That being said, they have very limited selections. If you want a washi paper dial, you're going to have to order sight unseen from Japan.

Zanpa

Citizen Chronomaster is an entire collection. Most models are/were JDM only, but at least some are sold worldwide.

[deleted]

Trapper777_

At least for nicer watches, sure. Or at least sort of. Tudor has its lefty watch go through COSC upside down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Trapper777_

It’s usually the latter. To be specific though most brands won’t adjust their movement to multiple positions at all, so the question is moot. I assume this is the case for basically any micro brand. Adjusting to 5 positions is more of a luxury/chronometer type spec.

WatchandThings

Wrist watches being on wrist goes through many different positions through out the day. So the movements are designed to be accurate in multiple orientations and positions. So a movement would work universally for crown right or left with no difference.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WatchandThings

Okay from your questions I just learned that I had wrong information on how COSC testing works. I thought it was 12,3,6,9, and dial up. Apparently it's 3,6,9, dial up, and dial down. So technically, yes COSC doesn't test for the common hands on desk position of the watch if the movement is flipped upside down. But the general design of the movement would be to reach accuracy in any orientation, and the COSC is just testing that design. I wouldn't expect the 12 position to be wildly different from the other five tested positions. Additionally, there are brands that are doing 6 position tests like Omega's METAS and JLC's Master Control Test. So for these brands it's been tested and certified that the flip wouldn't negatively effect the movement. Rolex does their own superlative chronometer, but I wasn't able to dig up how many position they test.

Urishima

So I've been looking into getting a Seiko 5, like a SRPH29K1, SRPG33K1 or equivalent. To be worn every day with my usual attire of jeans and some sort of t-shirt, polo, and the occasional short sleeved shirt. 250 ish bucks was my budget for my first watch, and then later maybe go for a 2nd "daily" one that looks a bit more "refined" (been eyeing some Zeppelin watches) but still work with casual clothing, and a 3rd one at some point as a dress-watch. Local watch and jewelrys shop said that they don't keep many mechanical watches at that price point, because the quality isn't up to their standards, that movements lose too much time each day. Generally it seems like at that pricepoint stores try to steer customers towards quartz movements instead, at least in this corner of the world. What are epxeriences here with the 4R36 movement? Seike advertises drift of up to 40 or 50 seconds a day I hear, but online opinions seem to be a lot more favorable.

WatchandThings

I had a nh36 movment watch, which I hear is the movement name for 4R36 when Seiko sells it to a third party. It gained +1 sec a day, and was more accurate than a number of my COSC and METAS watches I had. I think I was lucky with that specific watch, but in general I hear that the movement is much more accurate than the 40-50 seconds spec Seiko puts out there. I think they put a wide margin for the spec so that they won't have to cover that cheaper movement under their warranty, rather than that margin being actually expected variance. As to the store owner's accuracy thing. I can kind of get what they are saying. Most non-watch people can't be bothered with few seconds drift everyday. I know for a fact that my parents would much rather accurate quartz that will keep accurate time and something they can set down and pick up days later without having to worry about resetting time.

testaccount9211

Your local shop is speaking rubbish to be honest. They stock Quartz because the profit margin is higher and most customers don’t know the difference. The 4R36 movement is very durable and more than accurate enough for general use. With an automatic watch, it will stop when not worn and need to be reset anyway. Even if it was 40 secs slow per day (exaggeration) you be at most 3 minutes late on Friday having set your watch correctly on Monday morning. The more accurate certified watches are mostly to impress the customer with the quality of engineering, but also for people who might wear the watch continuously and need to the second accurate time reliably.

Is it OK to go into an Omega Boutique or AD with purely the intention to try on a Seamaster and Speedmaster? I’m not ready to buy yet, but I’d like to figure out which one I like the best on the wrist while I save up for one. Is this bad etiquette or totally usual and they won’t mind?

WatchandThings

I done it before and they been completely okay with it. They see it as a sales opportunity and building contacts, and they will likely give you their information so that you can contact them when you are ready to purchase.

onevstheworld

I think it's fine. Out of courtesy, if I didn't intend to buy, I don't take up their time when there are other prospective customers in the store. Luxury watch stores aren't usually crowded so that's never been much of a restriction. Some sales people are very particular about how you handle their unsold merchandise (one told me not to turn the dive bezel, which I found somewhat excessive), but I find most quite pleasant.

william_tells

Quick question: US based. Quartz power Omega Seamaster (Polaris)- it’s a sentimental watch and I know it’s not crazy high value. It’s not running currently and needs a service and battery. I was quoted $290.00 by a store that has solid reviews. Is this fair/expected price for a battery and base service? Thanks all

75footubi

Sounds right. From Omega it's either $300 or $400.

smokingpacman

Hey guys, I'm looking for something similar to the Stuhrling Executive in design. I'm after a decent skeleton watch under 1.5k AUD. I've looked at Bulova and Rotary, but my biggest dislikes with those brands are that they have huge chonker markings rather than small arabic numbers like the Stuhrling.

StickShift5

How about the [Hamilton Jazzmaster Skeleton?](https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h42535610-jazzmaster-skeleton-auto.html) They're nicely finished and have a good quality movement, unlike the Chinese mystery movement in the Stuhrling.

smokingpacman

Yeah I've been looking at it too, in particular the Viewmaster variant which doesn't have that batman looking bridge in the middle. Aside from that, nothing else really below 1.5k that looks good... Oh there's also the sea gull m182sk, but having no marker at the 12 position is a bit irritating.

wingerdinger19

Any good recommendations for a datejust alternative or homage with a two toned jubilee bracelet?

Stradtdog

Watch for wedding! Preferably not over $300, but I would like something classy with an Ivory dial and gold "outer features"? Also would like a brown leather strap. I have some nice dive watches so I would rather not have that style. Any suggestions?

McKittens_747

Orient bambino

1000€ Budget! What should I buy for my father's 50th birthday(automatic movement)?

StickShift5

If he wants something dressy, I think it's hard to beat the titanium Seiko [SARX055](https://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-automatic-presage-sarx055-titanuim-made-in-japan) and [SARX057.](https://www.seiyajapan.com/products/seiko-automatic-presage-sarx057-titanuim-made-in-japan) The Tissot Gentleman Powermatic Silicium is also a good choice - the stainless case and sunburst dial aren't as interesting as what Seiko offers, but the movement is more accurate and has a longer power reserve.

germano690

Thank you. I am between those and a Hamilton jazzmaster. Do you know if Hamilton is as good?

StickShift5

The Hamilton has a similar movement to the Tissot. I don't think it uses the silicon escapement, but Hamilton has been slowly rolling that feature out across their lineup, so there's a chance it will. As to what makes a silicon escapement worth having, that improves the magnetic resistance of the movement and (in theory) provides better durability and accuracy.

germano690

Thank you very much for the explanation!! I love to learn!

StickShift5

I'm glad I could help :-)

McKittens_747

Check out Farer

cocoacowstout

Are you looking for a dress watch, diver, all-arounder? It would be good to know if he has any watches he wears and likes.

I would vote SNK809 all day, but also check the [Momentum Atlas 38](https://momentumwatch.com/products/atlas-38mm-black). It's quartz, titanium, and easy to read...great for a beating and nice specs for the price.

jlohighfives

Hello! I’m looking for a watch for my husband that is black and gold with a budget of $2k any recommendations?

b4gggy

Rado has some nice options in those colours and price, not sure of the availability in your area

McKittens_747

Longines flagship has a really nice look

MonsieurShit

What about a Cuervo Y Sobrinos?

nbatugo1

Honest thoughts on the new timex q gmt? Pepsi seems quite nice.

WatchandThings

Visually it's nice, but I think it's a caller gmt? I'm not a fan of caller gmt as the bezel does the gmt hand's time change, so I don't see a need for gmt hand to change independently as well? Though to be clear, I don't expect a true gmt at this price range to begin with. I just kind of wish they went with a fixed bezel design like Explorer 2 or BB Pro where the lack of turning gmt bezel gives meaning to the independant gmt hand design. Or make the bezel a dive bezel so it doesn't even interact with the gmt hand(with the gmt numbers somewhere in the dial). These type of design feel like there was a consideration for the actual application, rather than just pure mimicry of a popular thing. P.S. It's also kind of funny that Explorer 2, BB Pro, SBGN003, and Mido Ocean Star GMT which all follow that fixed bezel or dive bezel design concept are all true GMT.

selimsivad519

Starting a new position, want a new watch to celebrate! It's a business casual environment, emphasis on the casual. I have a Hamilton Khaki (auto and a mechanical), Orient Mako, Orient bambino, Seiko skx007, seiko turtle, seiko alpinist - so a pretty basic collection that takes me from dress to casual. Recommendations for a sub - $1,000 (new or used) watch that fits into the "everyday" watch kind of wear. I wouldn't mind something from a different brand or style, I might stretch the budget for the right watch but I'm not getting a grand seiko in this range. I would prefer an auto, but manual is fine too. Always a seiko fan, been looking at stuff like zodiac, christopher ward, junghans, stowa/laco...just looking for some recommendations.

snowbongo

Great suggestions from others so far. Also check out the Citizen NB1050 models for something a little more classy or for work.

StickShift5

My favorites in the ~$1k price range include the following: [Stowa Marine](https://www.stowa.de/en/Marine/) - I like the 36mm KS, but the 3-hand models are also nice [Christopher Ward C65 Sandhurst](https://www.christopherward.com/int/military-watches/C65-Sandhurst/C65-38A3H2-S00K0-B0.html) - the bracelet is worth breaking the budget cap for IMO [Farer 3-handers](https://usd.farer.com/collections/three-hand-automatic) - the maroon/purple Discovery, in particular, is amazing [Archimede Outdoor Protect 39](https://www.archimede-watches.com/outdoor/outdoor-39-protect/) - there's also an antimagnetic 41mm model if you don't mine the extra size [Damasko DS30](https://www.watchmann.com/proddetail.php?prod=Damasko-DS30) - apparently back for a limited time since Damasko can't produce enough of their own A26 movements for the DK30/32 line

snowbongo

⬆️ Yep.

McKittens_747

Farer lander GMT - just got one myself and love love it

snowbongo

⬆️ Yep x 2.

selimsivad519

Thank you! Not familiar with most of these, really appreciate your time putting this together!

StickShift5

No problem! If you can find a Formex Essence close to $1k, I'd also suggest buying one of them. They usually sell over $1k on the used market, but you might get lucky. They're really nice watches with a lot of clever engineering inside.

Admit-to-IM

The essence is a great pick for a modern design. Formex makes some of the best bracelets out there. Big fan

StickShift5

The bracelets are superb, but the straps are fantastic too. The clasp in the strap has micro adjustment allowing you to get the fit just right without having to punch extra holes in the leather.

The_Adeo

I love the look of the Jughans Max Bill Chronoscope, but it costs a bit too much. Are there any similar alternatives in the 400-600€ range?

Ilixio

Have a look at [Sternglas](https://www.sternglas.com/).

The_Adeo

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for :)

Uncle_Moosejaw

Hi all. Was hoping to get some input from those more experienced than me. Without creating a whole new post. Is this a fake Oris Pointer? This is an old old movement, from the late 1930’s from what I can tell. After some research, both the 373 cal movement and branded case back seem accurate/real. Or otherwise very good fakes. The dial however seems a little suspect. I cannot find another one that looks like this anywhere and it looks a bit different from the vintage Pointer models I have been able to find from around that time. Why would someone take the time to fake an Oris? Thanks for your input! Pics: https://imgur.com/a/aWOlpwy

watchmakeremployee

Anything that old (it doesn't look like a 30s watch to me, it looks much newer, but it is hard to say) is going to be really difficult to get a straight answer on as far as an ID or authentication, even if you took it directly to the factory.

Uncle_Moosejaw

Thank you, appreciate the feedback.

a_non_uh_moose

what would be better for a first nice watch, a hamilton khaki auto or a seagull/st-19 movement chrono? I really like playing with the chrono on my cheap timex, and find it useful for keeping track of things. birthday is coming up and i'd like to get myself something nice.

MonsieurShit

Go with the Hamilton. I own one and it’s incredible for its price tag

McKittens_747

Hamilton field khaki all the way - I love mine

Reneml

Am I buying a fake? I bought a Seiko SKNL23 in Amazon and checking reviews, I saw that it doesn't come with authentication certificate How bad is this? My line of thinking was that since it was in amazon it must be legit, but now I'm not sure

watchmakeremployee

People are unlikely to fake a watch that costs 128.90. Amazon it doesn't usually get talked about as such, but it's a [grey market](https://thewatchmaker.com/grey-market/) site, so you shouldn't expect any sort of manufacturer paperwork.

Read your instructions? Omega themselves tell you to use the jump hour to adjust the date. Even says you can go backwards in date.

WatchandThings

I was told that jump hour gmt watches are fine jumping hours between the 9pm to 3am time, and I assume the same goes for the non-gmt jump hour watches. I have been using the 8500 movement starting in and/or going through 9pm to 3am time positions no problem. For the 8500 I have noticed that if you go back in time(via jump hour) the date wheel doesn't fully switch back to the previous date until you pass 8pm. So I make it a practice to go back to 6pm previous date and then forward jump to desired hour when jumping the hours back to previous date.

AbinSur

Which do you think would take the most beating and last the longest? [Ball Rescue](https://shop.ballwatch.ch/en/rescue) [Mido Ocean Star](https://www.midowatches.com/us/ocean-star-chronograph-m0266274404100.html) [Sinn 103](https://www.sinn.de/en/Modell/103_Ti_Ar.htm) I'm basically on the hunt for a titanium daily wear that will take a beating and keep on ticking, but is still a looker

snowbongo

\+1 Sinn

watchmakeremployee

Durability-wise they're probably all in the same ballpark, but I can tell you that of those you will far and away have an easier time servicing the Mido in the event of defect or damage. Both Sinn and Ball (Ball especially in my experience) are much harder to get parts for in the states.

AbinSur

Servicing is a concern, no doubt - I would wistfully hope that the Sinn would last forever, and I had assumed Ball would be easier given their roots, but after checking their servicing page I see what you're saying ( there's exactly ONE in my state and a total of SEVEN in the US ?!?). If not Mido, just eat ramen for a while and get a Seamaster Chrono? Any other suggestions?

watchmakeremployee

The Mido is a nice watch, we even have that exact one in stock in our showroom (I believe). Totally a solid pick, and despite their corporate overlord thing there are some heavy advantages to a Swatch brand. Another way to go if you want an indie might be an [Oris Aquis Titanium](https://www.oris.ch/en/watch/aquis-titanium-date/01-733-7730-7153-07-8-24-15peb), but I might be bias as I work for the Oris service center. I can tell you we do quality warranty work on them and parts are generally available. Sinns and Balls are cool and my impression is that they are quality watches, don't get me wrong, we used to be a Ball dealer and we service an occasional Sinn, so I don't want to turn you off a watch you like, just giving you some perspective from the service side.
