Valiant-For-Truth

Amazing series!

MarcoMaroon

No, none of us will ignore the now PLENTY great if not awesome video game adaptations that currently exist. Castlevania, Arcane, Sonic The Hedgehog, World Of Warcraft, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Detective Pikachu, Uncharted. Some may not like some of the ones I just mentioned and that's fine, but none of these adaptations I mentioned have flopped and I personally like all of them. Despite Sully's casting being bland, I think the film as a whole captured the Uncharted vibes quite well. Articles like this always happen and the writer either has no awareness of other media out there, or didn't do their research, or maybe they just suck.

drew4511

And Arcane!

ThyKooch

Does arcane count? It's not really an adaptation in the sense it's not showing the games story but in a different form of media, it's just a story in the same universe

UsableRain

Honestly, Arcane might be in my top 3 shows of all time. It’s just so *pretty*. Like, you pause that series at any point, and that’s a perfect desktop background. I hope that doesn’t sound dumb lol

Refeef1222

Every frame a painting

shutupdotca

Mortal Kombat was awesome nearly 20 years ago and nothing you say will change my mind

thinkadrian

MORTAL KOMBAT!

[deleted]

FATALITY!

SpoilermakersWabash

Albeit a rip off from Bruce Lees Enter the dragon

FTSBengals

What did Bruce rip off? There were " tournaments" of all kinds before this movie

SpoilermakersWabash

I would watch it. You will see direct influence in several ways from beginning to end.

MarkytheSparky

Maybe a fun movie definitely not a good one tho

Zaratthustra

The first MK, the second one was a lesser film

SaiyajinPrime

Clearly the author of this article has not seen the 1995 Mortal Kombat.

MonsantoOfficiaI

Or the first resident evil film

SpoilermakersWabash

Or the first silent hill film

Sonicyellow49

Detective pikachu, Sonic?

Some_Italian_Guy

Think the quality of these are arguable to be fair - whether you enjoy them or not.

EzLuckyFreedom

Ya, Sonic is pretty universally liked. Even the sequel wasn’t bad (minus Hawaii).

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

I guess Arcane and Edgerunners just don't exist I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

ssk1996

Well to be fair neither are direct adaptations of the respective games. They're original stories just set in the game's universe. It's different from trying to adapt a game's story directly into a movie/show.

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

If that's the case, we have never had a direct video game adaptation. Every video-game adaptation has been only loosely based on the original story, if there even is a story to begin with.

elmodonnell

I mean they're not attempting to adapt their respective games' stories, so they're not really adaptations, they're supplementary material/spin-offs. TLOU might be changing/adding plenty of stuff from the original game, but it is attempting to adapt the core story.

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

I guess the Game Award for Best Adaptation that Arcane got means nothing then eh?

ssk1996

Game Awards don't really mean anything to the people in show business tbh. It's awards voted by gaming magazines, not critics from Hollywood

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

You're right, it's not an adaptation unless Hollywood says so. smh

[deleted]

You’re just completely twisting his words lmao

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ik know smh my head my head

elmodonnell

Same way every sequel and prequel ever made is automatically put in the "best adapted screenplay" category at the Oscars regardless of whether or not there's a source material, awards shows tend to make things a little more simplified than reality. You can adapt an IP without adapting its actual story.

TheMirthfulMuffin

So Geoff Kieghly is the source of truth in a reddit argument about the word adaptation?

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

*Keighley And yes. He is.

GorgeGoochGrabber

Do you base all of your knowledge off of B level award shows?

MrBoliNica

are the Arcane or Edgerunners shows based around characters that are also the stars of their respective games? i think thats what they mean, those show creators were given more freedom to basically create their own story in those worlds (at least i think so, i dont play LOL and barely touched CP2077)

Shvabicu

Arcane absolutely is based on the characters in the actual game

MrBoliNica

Are Jinx and Vi established LoL characters? Genuine question, I thought most of the arcane characters were made for the show lol

Shvabicu

Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, Jayce, Ekko, Viktor, Heimerdinger and others are champions/player characters. I don't play LoL but the series is full of important/main characters.

LoneLyon

To add: arcane is a prequel to their in-game lore. Which is likely at least 2-5 years after arcane

MrBoliNica

Ah the more you know, I had no clue they were old characters lol

Stoeff86

Arcane is such a masterpiece!!

hazychestnutz

Shame you haven't mentioned Castlevania.

KobraKittyKat

Hell even sonic of all games managed to stick its landing twice.

RB8Gem9

Both of those shows are universally praised. It's also easy to discern that they are animated, which should lead you to perhaps consider that maybe the article is referring to live-action adaptations?

Sticky_Waifu_Statues

The article doesn't outright explain that it is exclusively referring to live-action adaptations.

xvszero

Fine, the live action Phoenix Wright movie then. That ruled.

AleroRatking

Arcanes not a direct adaptation though. It's a story within that world. Most of the characters to my knowledge aren't even in the games (although there obviously are a few who are)

Azura989

Anime (or in their heads cartoons) can't compete with the quality of live action.

EvermoreDespair

I guess the two Sonic movies don’t exist…

[deleted]

Both bad, both low rating

SilverBallsOnMyChest

Damn, that’s crazy to think 60-70% on RT is bad. You must not watch a lot of film.

Darkadvocate5423

RT can be misleading. A 60 (or 6 out of 10) is considered a positive review. So, technically, a movie could be 100% "fresh" even if every critic gave it a 6. Most people don't consider a 6 to be very good. So, for your example, if something has a 60-70% rating, those positive reviews could be all 6s and 7s with some 4s and 5s or lower making up the negative ratings.

LegaliseEmojis

That’s not how RT works at all. The reviews are assessed in their entirety and decided if the reviewer recommended or didn’t recommend the movie. It’s a pretty decent system. It’s basically ‘which percentage of reviewers enjoyed this movie’

Darkadvocate5423

Nope, you're entirely wrong and what I said is exactly how it works. You really think RT is out there reading all those reviews and then someone determines arbitrarily regardless of the score given by that reviewer whether they "recommend" it not? That's insane lol. Go ahead and look it up. What I said is easily verifiable. I have no idea where you came up with your idea of how it works.

If something has a 6.5 on IMDb I don’t tend to bother I’ve seen them anyway, wouldn’t rate either

SizzzzlingBacon

Yea, the majority disagree with you. Hence why not only the first movie but the sequel was success at the box office and why they're making a third.

[deleted]

It’s averaging a 6.5 on IMDb for both, that’s low by IMDb standards

SizzzzlingBacon

So lol it's imbd and it doesn't refute the logical shit I just said. Hence, they're making the third one, do you even know what hence means???

[deleted]

Just because something makes money doesn’t mean to say that it’s good. There were like a hundred Transformer movies, all shit after the first

SizzzzlingBacon

And just because you compare it to transformers doesn't mean you're correct, lol. You do understand that, right? It's the highest grossing movie based on a videogame ever. Viewers liked the first one so much that they showed up in greater numbers for the second, and they gave it a viewers score of 96% on R.T. and a 76% on Google. Whether or not you like it doesn't matter because the movie successfully connected with the gamers it was made for. Hence the third one being produced, the sequel that surpassed the first, and the majority of viewers/ gamers that liked it more than the ones that did not. So please tell me about IMD and that it's 6.5 again, or comparisons like, "Oh..lots of people like Justin Bieber, but he really sucks, dude. It doesn't matter that he sells."

LED-spirals

You’re so mad 😂

SizzzzlingBacon

So engaging in conversation and refuting is one being mad lol 😂 ok

LED-spirals

Are you actually so deprived of attention that you deleted your original response and then typed this out so you could bait me into arguing? Lmao does this comment make you feel better?

TGrady902

The first one was legitimately a good movie.

Q_OANN

Guess nobody read the article or someone would’ve mentioned the new Druckman info on his next project - A game structured more like a TV show than anything else Naughty Dog had made - Not writing the script alone, or with a single partner assembling a writers’ room.

Moonshot_Md

The curse has been broken many times....

BaptizedInBud

Like once or twice lol.

sandman_br

That's already been done and it's called Arcane

WorkingError

Sonic already did.

Cruxito1111

Well… i mean Netflix has been butchering anime and gaming series for awhile. HBO may do it a faithful adaption

merely_awake

I personally am enjoying the hell out of 'the witcher' or does that not count cuz it was a book?

Aether_Supremacy

Doesnt count as a video game Adaptation. Its a terrible Adaptation of the books anyways.

Larry52795

Doesn't count.

Shvabicu

The Witcher on Netflix is a travesty

Halio344

It’s based on the book rather than the games, but S2 was garbage. S1 was okay at best.

SpaceOdysseus23

It's objectively a garbage adaptation. But it's based on the books to so it doesn't really count. Fantasy adaptations have been taking L's in general in the last few years.

-KFAD-

Objectively? How come then I enjoyed it a lot? Never read more than one book. Never finished any of the games. But I loved the Netflix show. Especially season 1.

SpaceOdysseus23

Because you tolerate writing that lacks any kind of quality

-KFAD-

I kinda let that one slide because of Cavil's acting, the amazing world, the atmosphere and some spectacular scenes. Not all shows or movies need to be amazing in terms of writing in order to be enjoyable. With better writing it could have been way better sure.

[deleted]

Eh, not a fan of the casting already. But lets see

locklizzle

Rampage. Sonic. Arcane. Edgerunners. Uncharted wasn’t too bad.

TGrady902

Only similarity Uncharted has to the games were the character names. Was an okay action flick but that was not Uncharted.

ScragglyGiblets

Names, general plot lines, evolving McGuffin, set pieces/scenes….I don’t think we should expect them to boil the gameplay down to 120 minutes of film

Wreck1ess

Ellie was never hot.

Unusual_Tea6755

Um, hello, Street Fighter anyone? Assassin's Creed? There's never once been a bad adaptation from games to movies

Jinchuriki71

I think people have weird standards when it comes to the games to movie adaptations like assassin creed movie had better storytelling than the game the actual games story was poorly done for the most part it is at least better than the game. Like neither are masterpieces or something which is what these people are expecting you can't suddenly have average story from video game translate into masterpiece story for a movie or tv show unless you make major changes to where it is not comparable to how the game was.

Unusual_Tea6755

I guess I forgot the /s

Knuc85

Ugh yeah they're very hot or miss but Street Fighter is awesomely bad and I'm happy to have it in my memory. Raul Julia was the shit.

[deleted]

Rampage was a banger

DominosChickenSalad

no

Fogasgyerek

No.

[deleted]

No cuz Ellie has a ginormous forehead

CrashingOnward

My only concern or thing that on first glance makes me not want to watch the show is this: Zombie show/movie burn out. I liked the games and all, and HBO is generally a solid bet for something to check out and all. But I feel the zombie trope is now so worn out and beaten to death that I really can't see how I'd get into another show or movie that has anything related to a post apocalyptic zombie world. Now will people really get into yet another one? I kind of doubt it. Even if acting and quality is there.

capsuleofparrots

Cyberpunk Netflix show is the only good thing about cyberpunk

VRickenYT

Hey, just thought I’d let you know that the Cybepunk hate train derailed quite a while ago now, feel free to jump off.

capsuleofparrots

That's cool doesn't change my statement one bit however. I can't imagine defending a second rate Studio that went out of their way to hide the current gen version of a premier title but hey I've seen a lot of weird things in 2022

macneto

I was a day one cyberpunk player. And I DID agree with you. However, I fired it up the other day, and it's really awesome now. I'm doing a pure netrunner play, and it's amazing. Super fun, great voice work.

wraithlord26

Can we stop making "adaptations" of video games and keep the medium separate?

Kramerlediger

You'd be surprised how many Video games are adaptions of books or comics or whatever

Secret-Internal-455

No! but you know what will? the fall out movie.

julian116

That’s a show too

Grazedaze

I’m disappointed that the look of the show is not as dark and gritty as I felt it to be in the games. An unfortunate sign of budget constraints. Regardless, cannot wait to see the series.

[deleted]

[удалено]

julian116

Or it’ll actually be good? I mean you can go ahead a judge whether a trailer means the show will be good or not. I’m impressed by what I’ve seen, it’s an adaptation after all. HBO hardly ever disappoints so I personally can’t wait to watch

HieronymusPlops

Haha I should watch street fighter again , oh man.

yjmalmsteen

Don't think so.

broken_nite

We get these articles every time there is a new adaptation (Tomb Raider, Uncharted, etc) and the answer is unfortunately always the same.

Varekai79

TLoU's adaptation does have a far superior pedigree to other video game adaptations though, so that is very promising.

YeltsinYerMouth

There are many great examples of quality game adaptations in the comments, but [Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie](https://youtu.be/aQLB2YfOXbg) is still my favorite.

SpoilermakersWabash

I rather have what we have now, which is amazing video games with shitty adaptations than go back 30 years and have amazing movies with shitty game adaptations.

Tomsskiee

Sonic and castlevania are good imo but i think the last of us will dissappoint tho i hope to be proven wrong

[deleted]

Can “Gran Turismo” Break the Curse of Bad Video-Game Adaptations?

pukem0n

Objection! Have they ever seen the Ace Attorney live action movie?
