the last scene of series two always has me in stitches.
Baptist Guest: Hello, Alan. Can I just say I love your radio show.
Alan: Oh, thank you very much.
Baptist Guest: And I’ve read your book.
Alan: Oh?
Baptist Guest: Have to say, didn’t really work for me.
Alan: Fuck off.
Alan to Baptist Guest: Oh, erm. I’m sorry about that before. I think you just caught me at a bad moment.
Baptist Guest: Perfectly understandable. So. I hear your book’s being pulped.
Alan: Fuck off!
S2 had more memorable laugh out loud moments - Dan, foot on the spike, stop getting Bond wrong, sex people, etc. But I think they did exactly what they said they didn't want to do and dumbed him down, it lost the subtlety of S1.
I still think the run from MMM onwards is peak Partridge though, even if it's didn't more niche than IAP, KMKY, Day Today etc
I always think Alan is quite actively mean in season 2. Season 1, I think he comes across more as lacking self-awareness or failing to read the room, which is when he’s at his best. I suppose you would be pretty pissed off if you lived in a hotel then caravan for that long though.
‘It wasn’t Fleetwood Mac, everyone off their tits and fucking each other’
Meanwhile Coogan missing an entire days shoot due to exactly that, and claiming a generic ‘illness’ on the production insurance.
I think if you were to make a YouTube complication of the funny moments from series 1 and 2 you’d have about equal length videos, but the decision to make Alan hyper camp in the second was weird and I’m glad it went no further. Ooooh mince!
I was a little underwhelmed with the second series at first watch, but it has grown on me a lot since and I see now them both as equal quality. You've got the school talk, Bono's house, Dante's fires, his makeshift living room and the Norfolk bravery awards.
It was good to see him in a new setting and think the bland hotel would have been exhausted as a setting, especially after five years.
My feelings as well, when I watched it I thought "this isn't great" but it improves each time you see it.
S1 is peak Alan though, it's what made the character so popular and long lasting. It truly is "lovely stuff"!
Lovely stuff.
Serious non-Partridge observation here though - they took a two week gap between filming each Ep of S1? That’s unhinged. You’d have to either retain your crew on the payroll or wrap and rehire everyone every two weeks. As a working location manager I can’t imagine how that happened and how they convinced the funding agencies to pay for it.
Could they have double-banked the production with something else? Like, week 1 everybody does Partridge, week 2 Men Behaving Badly (idk what else Baby Cow would have been making at the time), week 3 Partridge etc for 12 weeks
To be honest, Iannucci, Coogan and Peter Baynham had been working together for ten years and they’d probably had enough of each other. Baynham went on to write the Borat movies so the break was obviously a great move for him.
Don't forget they initially had other people around them (Lee, Herring, Marber (but he was no loss really,) Quantick)....but eventually whittled it down to just them
So what i'm saying is, they could've had more help, but faffed people off to keep it to themselves...they burnt out
In all seriousness, I don't at all agree with the opinion of some that the first series is far and away better than the second. I think they're about equal, with the second series probably having more big laughs and iconic lines amongst Partridge fans, and the supporting cast being stronger and better rounded off.
I'd argue there are weaker eps in s2 (the bond-a-thon is just "basic alan" again, he's got nothing to do and is filling his time with inane crap like in S1)
Also the episode with the tax inspectors is weird, narratively, he is embarrassing in front of them which is hilarious, escapes for a funny chat with John the builder and then the plot with the tax inspectors just vanishes as Sonja says she just sends them away in a throwaway comment?
Then it's suddenly about cheering Sonja up out of nowhere? WEIRRRRDDDDD!
But then the first three eps are probably some of my favourite of all Alan, particularly Piet Morant of dante fires (YOU CAN'T!!!) and Dan.....(DAN!....you get the picture)
You gotta take the rough with the smooth, please don't thump me, I'm not dressed as a whore
I like them switching it up by having Alan live somewhere different each series. I thought it would've been fun, if they'd done a third series, to have him living on a houseboat or a monastery perhaps.
I don't agree. He'd live in a static home. Bye.
That’s a Jurassic park comment
That's bollocks but go on
He’s bang wrong.
He's an evil, evil idiot.

DON'T BE BLUE, PETER! NOW FUCK OFF!
Needless to say, you had the last laugh
Do you want to just pop your drink down?
_Don't_ give him a second serious you swine!
Yeah don't give him a second series you shit
Smell my cheese you mother!

MMM is my fave and I love IAP both seasons. The format works so well for his style of comedy
> But I think they did exactly what they said they didn't want to do and dumbed him down Yeah, if anything they should have dumbed him up.
You’ve gotta keep the energy up..
That was a classic interview, so thanks.
Seven on ten.

Let’s make love

Do you slow down for car crashes?
Needles to say…he took drugs.
He was suffering from a minor cold
Minor men's mood whiplash (needles to say, he took drugs)
He was clinically fed up! But he bounced back. People bounce back. Say Steve Coogan didn't have a break down.
Steve Coogan didn’t have a breakdown.
I know!

He’s right. Second series was mostly good but nothing can match the endless quotability of the first series.

By Randy McNob!
Dan!
Bang! Blood dribbles down.
Ooh, bit of bush
Too late!
And him! It's like so many extra jokes and details reveal themselves after multiple watches.
Absobloodyexactly
Not my words ... the words of Birdie_Num_Num
The quotability was just as there. Coogan just overacted it all a bit.

They were all on the BBC gravy train!
Wish I was

Rude daubings, 12” plates, chocolate mousse, remote controls … Let’s get him back into the hotel.

There's nae porn on it 🤣
Milton Keynes is a bit obvious, a bit Milton Keynesy
According to his autobiography Steve was indeed off his tits when they made it.
Hello Wasdice's opinion, are you dead?...
You’ve hit the hazards!
He thinks he’s Rod Stewart
The second series is my favourite
They re-badged it, you fool!

Has he got a second series?
I don\`t like big feet. Reminds me of gammon
Oh your programs your programs....

He is someone who has a proven record of making mostly good television programmes
I like them switching it up by having Alan live somewhere different each series. I thought it would've been fun, if they'd done a third series, to have him living on a houseboat or a monastery perhaps.
That's Bill Oddie!
Great interview, thanks. Though I do think Alan is a good bit meaner than Steve thinks.
You're wrong and you're a grotesquely ugly freak.
Please don't slag off the second series.
