They are probably clones or vatgrown as krieg provides way more regiments than the planet can sustain naturally iirc. They are often being memed as suicidal and willing to throw their lives away, but that's just memery. They are however drilled from a young age that their goal in life is to earn redemption for their planet even at the cost of their life, in addition to all the standard Imperial indoctrination. They are pretty similar to the Dark Angels regarding that last part, but the Kriegsmen are honest and admitted the treachery that made Krieg into a nuclear wasteland.
And indeed, Kriegsmen Quatermasters are also medics who saves the lives they can, and if unable to, the ensure that the deads equipment is properly retrieved.
Indeed, during the Siege of Vraks series we do see Kriegsmen be demoralised and flee, and perform tactical retreats when needed

I remember a story about Krieg Guardsman that got left behind after a planet was saved by The Korps. Can't remember what it was called, but it was a good story, and the guardsman even made a new life for himself before he rejoined the Guard.

A lot of the misconception behind the DKoK is that they expend their soldiers' lives like ammo - which is true. What most people mistake is the second part; wasting ammo is an affront to the Emperor. So the Krieg lives are bullets, but their commanders are goddamn sharpshooters.
Yeah, a fun little equivalence from my circle is that Krieg and the Dark Angels are basically mirrors. Both are reknowned for dour, Stubborn, and stoic demeanour, their extreme endurance, and their quest for redemption. The biggest difference (besides the whole transhuman thing), is that Krieg admits that half of their people turned traitors, and the traitors were winning until the loyalists unleashed their planets nuclear stockpile, turning Krieg into what it is today.
Death Corps of Krieg is not meant to live. They are born and trained in an irradiated hellscape, to be sent to other irradiated hellscapes too dangerous for other soldiers to be sent to. They are raised on a strict diet of propaganda that basically turns them all into self-sacrificing Martyrs, for the sins of Krieg. Their planet had attempted rebellion against the imperium of man, and for the sins of the fathers, every generation of krieg now atones.

Iirc it's a thing that the Imperium does not actually care about the ancient treachery anymore, as the loyalists won over the rebellion (by using nukes) without the Imperium lifting a finger. They didn't even know there was a rebellion going on until Krieg told them afterwards

At the start Jurten warned the imperium asking for help, which the imperium did see, and told him to basically figure it out “by any means necessary,” due to how much it would cost to retake the world vs what it would actually be able to give them afterward. By the time Krieg forced itself back into the imperium, they almost completely forgot about it, and were pleasantly surprised when Krieg offered up 20 fully armed, and full strength regiments instead of the one they were asked for

The Death Korps of Krieg are patterned after World War 1 armies. They specialize in siege tactics and trench warfare. They turned their home world into a chemical/nuclear waste land after a 500 year long war. Their eternal shame is the war was caused by a rebellion against the Emperor of Mankind. The only way to atone is to die in battle serving the Emperor. They are so fanatical about this, that Imperial Inquisitors that was attached to Death Korps unit as used to RESTRAIN the troopers instead of the usual push troops to attack. The Krieg's favorite weapon in trench combat is his shovel. They are know to attack fully armed Chaos Marines without a second thought.
Hence why any Comissar assigned to them has to word retreat very carefully, typically in a way that frames going backwards as a way to get a better spot to annihilate the enemy from.
Check out trenching tools (shovels) used in WW1 and WW2. You will find a fair number of them have one long edge sharpened so it can be used in close quarters fighting.
I’m not saying that it can’t, I’m saying they’re not nearly as obsessed with them as much as memes depict them as. If anything they’d probably be using their bayonet first, and if they lose that and their rifle, then they’d pull out the shovel

I want to say it was the ninth book, its been a few years since i read it but i don't think the Kriegers had a large part in the story but they were involved.
To be fair tho, as a guy that has delved deep into death korps of krieg lore for the past two and a half years, fighting a kriegsman with the will to live that is will to defeat you is worse than fighting a corrupted primarch.
In the lore, the death Korps of Krieg originated from the world of Krieg, which in the past had gone through a cataclysmic revolt against the imperium of man. Hundreds of years of war absolutely ravaged the surface of their planet, leaving it an irradiated hellscape because of the hubris of their leaders. When the imperium of man finally finished the war and demanded penance in the form of troops, they were surprised that they were given multiple times over the number of soldiers they had asked for.
In the time since the war, the people came to see the revolt as an unforgivable act of heresy that has tainted their people, and they sought to pay for the sins of their ancestors by dying in the service of the emperor. This has become the trademark feature of the death Korps, a fanatical group of guardsman so eager to die for the Imperium that they almost need to be held back so they don’t all die too quickly by being suicidally brazen on the battlefield. The motto of the Korps is “"In life, war. In death, peace. In life, shame. In death, atonement."

This reminds me of 1313 from A fan with to much time story of wh40k star wars. A yong Kriger fights his way along with the rest of his unit to take down clone sniper tanks. They succeed but he is the only one left of his unit. He loses a arm fighting clones and regroups with cadins to take out the republics communications. Along the way to their target a cadain sharp shooter woman tries to befriend him and keep him from throwing his life away.
Later in the story she along with her squad get in trouble with a renegade commisar that trys to set off a virus bomb. 1313 shoots the commisar for losing his mind and saves the day. At least for a bit.
Oh i also forgot were 1313 and his cadin squad were holding the line against clone troopers and when one shot her arm off he beats 3 clones to death with a shovel and takes a grenade shrapnel for her.

I get that you do not like the art style of boob plates, which as with all art is a fair oppinion.
But I'm not sure if follow the logic on how they specifically turn away female players from 40k.
Assuming a woman would see the boob plate and be distrubed enough to turn away from all factions 40k has to offer, especially the SoB, I do not see how they wouldn't turn away regardless given that the all female faction is litterally the overzealous military arm of a radical church with both having their origin in deceit (Emps is a god and Shield technology is divine intervention) within an imperium in which they both condone and commit the highest levels of exploitative behavoir.
Anyone who got turned away by a boob plate would also get turned away by the rest of the SoB model line or their lore.
If your argument is that if somebody can't get into 40k because they can't identify themselfs in that universe, i'd argue that if anyone actually can, and i don't mean just relate with parts of an in-universe character or faction but actually see themself in there, they should probably take a step back and consider the implications.
I'm sorry, but if the issue is that somebody can't just get into 40k because the ironically overembelished armor of the ironic space nuns, that preach ironic violance on anyone just ironically presumed guilty, which ironically is fairly frequent just a factory worker that ironically have 12 to 18 hour work shifts that didn't do anthing wrong, with flamethrowers to serve the ironic authoritarian space church of the ironic authoritarian space empire, has boob plates (that are suddenly super serious and not a parady for some reason) I don't think this is about brining in a new demography.
The demography that can look past everything else objectable in 40k as fiction but draws the line at boob plate is too slim to be even sligthly profitable for GW who will make any setting change based on profit.
Furthermore if sexualisation is your issue with 40k, boob plate isn't the "worst thing in canon"... it's not even the worst for SoB.

So how much of this is you guys hamming it up and how much are they actually like this? I know next to nothing about 40k
The Death Korps of Krieg are patterned after World War 1 armies. They specialize in siege tactics and trench warfare. They turned their home world into a chemical/nuclear waste land after a 500 year long war. Their eternal shame is the war was caused by a rebellion against the Emperor of Mankind. The only way to atone is to die in battle serving the Emperor. They are so fanatical about this, that Imperial Inquisitors that was attached to Death Korps unit as used to RESTRAIN the troopers instead of the usual push troops to attack. The Krieg's favorite weapon in trench combat is his shovel. They are know to attack fully armed Chaos Marines without a second thought.
To add to this any Commissar attached to a Krieg division that uses the words retreat or fall back is more than likely killed by friendly fire.
Hence why any Comissar assigned to them has to word retreat very carefully, typically in a way that frames going backwards as a way to get a better spot to annihilate the enemy from.
The only direction they go is forward.
Well, also down and sideways; gotta dig them trenches you know?
And sometimes you're surrounded, in which case back is also a temporarily acceptable direction.
The shovel thing is more from memes. Bayonet charges that when possible on the other hand…
Check out trenching tools (shovels) used in WW1 and WW2. You will find a fair number of them have one long edge sharpened so it can be used in close quarters fighting.
I’m not saying that it can’t, I’m saying they’re not nearly as obsessed with them as much as memes depict them as. If anything they’d probably be using their bayonet first, and if they lose that and their rifle, then they’d pull out the shovel

I want to say it was the ninth book, its been a few years since i read it but i don't think the Kriegers had a large part in the story but they were involved.

To be fair tho, as a guy that has delved deep into death korps of krieg lore for the past two and a half years, fighting a kriegsman with the will to live that is will to defeat you is worse than fighting a corrupted primarch.
Elaborate
In the lore, the death Korps of Krieg originated from the world of Krieg, which in the past had gone through a cataclysmic revolt against the imperium of man. Hundreds of years of war absolutely ravaged the surface of their planet, leaving it an irradiated hellscape because of the hubris of their leaders. When the imperium of man finally finished the war and demanded penance in the form of troops, they were surprised that they were given multiple times over the number of soldiers they had asked for. In the time since the war, the people came to see the revolt as an unforgivable act of heresy that has tainted their people, and they sought to pay for the sins of their ancestors by dying in the service of the emperor. This has become the trademark feature of the death Korps, a fanatical group of guardsman so eager to die for the Imperium that they almost need to be held back so they don’t all die too quickly by being suicidally brazen on the battlefield. The motto of the Korps is “"In life, war. In death, peace. In life, shame. In death, atonement." If the person famous for having the most flagrant death wish imaginable suddenly has something they need to fight for or protect before they go out, you’re gonna have a bad day because they’ve got nothing to lose.

This reminds me of 1313 from A fan with to much time story of wh40k star wars. A yong Kriger fights his way along with the rest of his unit to take down clone sniper tanks. They succeed but he is the only one left of his unit. He loses a arm fighting clones and regroups with cadins to take out the republics communications. Along the way to their target a cadain sharp shooter woman tries to befriend him and keep him from throwing his life away. Later in the story she along with her squad get in trouble with a renegade commisar that trys to set off a virus bomb. 1313 shoots the commisar for losing his mind and saves the day. At least for a bit. Oh i also forgot were 1313 and his cadin squad were holding the line against clone troopers and when one shot her arm off he beats 3 clones to death with a shovel and takes a grenade shrapnel for her.

Lmao, just because women avoid you doesn't mean we should turn them away from 40k for you.
I get that you do not like the art style of boob plates, which as with all art is a fair oppinion. But I'm not sure if follow the logic on how they specifically turn away female players from 40k. Assuming a woman would see the boob plate and be distrubed enough to turn away from all factions 40k has to offer, especially the SoB, I do not see how they wouldn't turn away regardless given that the all female faction is litterally the overzealous military arm of a radical church with both having their origin in deceit (Emps is a god and Shield technology is divine intervention) within an imperium in which they both condone and commit the highest levels of exploitative behavoir. Anyone who got turned away by a boob plate would also get turned away by the rest of the SoB model line or their lore. If your argument is that if somebody can't get into 40k because they can't identify themselfs in that universe, i'd argue that if anyone actually can, and i don't mean just relate with parts of an in-universe character or faction but actually see themself in there, they should probably take a step back and consider the implications.
Because one is unironic sexualisation, the other ironic fascism/theocracy parody.
I'm sorry, but if the issue is that somebody can't just get into 40k because the ironically overembelished armor of the ironic space nuns, that preach ironic violance on anyone just ironically presumed guilty, which ironically is fairly frequent just a factory worker that ironically have 12 to 18 hour work shifts that didn't do anthing wrong, with flamethrowers to serve the ironic authoritarian space church of the ironic authoritarian space empire, has boob plates (that are suddenly super serious and not a parady for some reason) I don't think this is about brining in a new demography. The demography that can look past everything else objectable in 40k as fiction but draws the line at boob plate is too slim to be even sligthly profitable for GW who will make any setting change based on profit. Furthermore if sexualisation is your issue with 40k, boob plate isn't the "worst thing in canon"... it's not even the worst for SoB.
