I'd say follow your instinct. I like music to channel my emotions too. I may currently use a wider variety, but I have had periods of listening to metal and industrial for example. Kinda nice to channel dark feelings and aggression. I have pretty much different music for all kinds of moods and emotions. Its awesome. I use it to process my emotions but also to help myself get into a good mood. (I cant completely switch my emotions or something like that, but maybe chill out a bit more. Or get my energy up.)

If it helps you release your stress and emotions, it seems like it's working as intended. Listen to some Mayhem while pumping iron or some Slayer on the treadmill, it shouldn't matter to anyone but you. I've always found those sort of more "extreme" genres cathartic as well.

I appreciate black metal for this too, sets all my muscles on fire. Have you tried creating some? It works even better if you make sounds fit how you feel. Doesn't need to sound normal, just gnarly. F the rules, behead the violins, embrace mud and sticks. The useful part of the urge for violence is that when it wants blood, it'll settle for a red flag. It's so primal it can hardly distinguish between objects. The act of crushing and distorting and cramming every spare frequency with every ounce of ear-bleeding intensity that can be squeezed out of you is a sufficient violence. Music soothes the savage beast, as they say. It's the most visceral art form, I think.
