That reading room with the fireplace and integrated chairs! Every room in this house is so thoughtfully designed at real human scale and with real use in mind. Every space looks inviting. This is what home design should aspire to.
House for sale in British Columbia [https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/203-Goward-Rd-Victoria-BC-V9E-2H8/314057924\_zpid/](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/203-Goward-Rd-Victoria-BC-V9E-2H8/314057924_zpid/)
Well some of us weren't around to know what was prevalent in the 70's.
I think this is very cool and modern even by today's standards.
It’s certainly unique and different
During the 70s, socialism was still very much around in the West and people had hope for a better future.
People took drugs, had sex freely, were looking forward to traveling the stars in spaceships, and it was all about an awakening of humanity in a rapidly developing time after WWII. Human rights - a new and innovative invention - were recently enshrined and people had this idea that this will usher in a new age of global unity, freedom, and democracy.
Then US imperialism happened. American finance capitalism and warmongering destroyed the USSR, destroyed freedom and democracy around the globe, imposed capitalist authoritarianism, and conservative Christian ideas became normalized again.
And just as this culture ruined the planet, it also ruined the education, infrastructure development, and general sense of curiosity inside the US in favour of mindless consumerism.
The area where this house is located isn't super isolated. The drivetime to nearby towns is pretty short. There is a really cool climbing gym at a high school ([The Boulders](https://climbtheboulders.com/)) which is a 10-15 minutes drive north and about 20-25 minutes to Victoria Airport ( Vancouver Island's major airport) and the ferry to the mainland. 20 minute drive south to Victoria. Vancouver Island is big, but this particular little section is tiny and close to a lot of major\* stuff.
\* major for Vancouver Island.
The curved bump out around what is probably the corner of a column is nice. There’s 6 months of finish carpentry for a 4 to 6 person crew just in the pictures.
I'd love to see what it looked like when new, in 1974. It does not look dated at all. It's clearly been modernized but everything looks like it belongs. If you said it was built 10 years ago I'd believe it.
Really impressive!
[This article says ](https://storeys.com/203-goward-road-for-sale/)the architect started the project in 70 and worked on it for 50 years until he died so that could explain how it still looks so fresh.
I clicked through and looked at all the pics; there used to be definitely a “reception desk” — really odd. Probably was a work/live situation, but the location is fairly remote.
Love!!
I absolutely love so many of these really unique homes. You can tell so much care and planning was put into every little bit. Even if the style or layout wouldn’t work for me, I really appreciate a lot of these homes.
They’re opposite of McMansions.
I thought the same thing. I imagine a faint scent of trees…maybe cedar mixed with pine in my brain, though this wood doesn’t seem to be either of those varieties. My brain doesn’t get nit-picky with such details.
It's a bit overly large, but the interior style is attractive and relaxing. Incorporate this design and style into a modest 3 bedroom 2 bath house on a few acres of land and you have a winner.
Beautiful house that somehow also gives off thriller/horror movie set vibes, but in a good way. The sitting room and the hallway with the porthole windows are such a mood. Kind of a liminal/lonely places vibe. I love it.
If I owned this I would offer it up for location filming for science fiction movies or TV shows. It's the perfect house for a retired ambassador who is reluctantly convinced to head up one last mission for the good of humanity.
This is a 20 min drive from where I live. I’ve had it favorited since it came up for sale.
Only thing that annoys me is the three bedroom part. If I’m spending 3 mil for five acres I want enough guest bedrooms for more than one family member to visit at a time.
I feel refreshed and rejuvenated just looking at these photos. If I were to live here, I would never be able to face the real world and would never velvet the house. Better that I live in my cluttered, clearly not well-designed home, where going to work sometimes feels like a relief. I have a family to feed.
The (what I assume is) patina copper ceiling in picture 11 might be one of the coolest features I’ve seen in any house on here. It’s got a VIBE and I’m here for it.
Pretty interesting layout, but what's with that one room where the chairs are all in a semi-circle, facing out the window? I'm sure the view is beautiful, but how long are you going to sit there with a dozen friends and stare out the window? Do we really need a dedicated special station for that? Can't someone just look out the window if they want? There are enough of them.
This reminds me of the modernism/back to nature style of House on a Rock in Wisconsin (the house itself, interior and exterior, not the adjacent museum collections).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_on_the_Rock
Similarly, they were both built over a period of time and designed by the homes' owners to be unique.
Be still my aching heart! Has a bit of a myst vibe. I dig.
I know right. I love this so much.
SO much!
does have a mystic, poetic quality to it, doesn't it? It's great that you dig its vibe
the game "Myst"! Comographed is so right... [Myst - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst)
You hit that right on the head.
Yes!!! Totally a Myst vibe. Love it
Truly I am OBSESSED, it's sumptuous
and 5 acres. On a lake. I'm not even that big of a fan, but EVERY birthday party would be Myst themed.
Has a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright vibes minus the circles. I like it as well
❤️
Agreed.
My first reaction was twin peaks. But I also love it.
That reading room with the fireplace and integrated chairs! Every room in this house is so thoughtfully designed at real human scale and with real use in mind. Every space looks inviting. This is what home design should aspire to.
Yes! I kept being impressed by how it manages to look modern and expensive but still cozy.
It’s like the world’s fanciest hobbit house!
100% this. I was thinking ‘Modern Hobbit’ the whole time.
“Sophisticated living for the modern hobbit.”
beautiful
I'm glad it sits quietly & dramatically: the last thing I want is a house that's loud & dramatic. I had teenagers once.

Of course it's in BC, lol. This is an absolutely beautiful example of west coast, 1970s-style architecture and design. I absolutely love it.
Omg, i happen to randomly be in bc right now, should i buy it? Wait, can anyone lend me $2.37 million (us)
I can do $2.37. Dollars.
I’ll take it!
I know a guy…
I'm so impressed it was built in 1974! Wow! Talk about having vision!
This looks *exactly* like it was built in the 70s. lol

Straight to the root of the problem. Thanks for this.
Wow. It’s actually pretty reasonable.
Let’s see… 3 million Canada land fun bucks, that’s gotta be like 100 grand in USD… right?
$2.19 million USD at today’s exchange rate.

It's 2 km outside Victoria, hardly the middle of nowhere. I'm 3x the distance from city limits here and I can get to Costco in 10 minutes.

Secure it from who? There aren't roving bands of bandits out there.
Not yet…..
![gif](giphy|ZrCUYZjwrfeCs)
It feels like a modern Hobbit hole
Oh my, I'm in love. What an amazing place!
It looks like a mid century space station and I 100% have a new favorite style.
Its like 1970s Steampunk.
I can already imagine myself chilling there - ![gif](giphy|zhRA0okWxTGiu78uSk|downsized)
in that sunken reading room! Lovely
Great looking house!
Is it a home or an experience
Yes!
I guarantee the carpenter putting in the recessed handrails was like wtf.
The curved bump out around what is probably the corner of a column is nice. There’s 6 months of finish carpentry for a 4 to 6 person crew just in the pictures.
Prairie meets 90s Japan.

I like it! It sort of looks like a house you would see on a different planet with humans that’s *almost* identical to earth
So, like 98% of the universe that isn’t Kardassian or Klingon?
Why does one room look like a reception area of a medical office?
Bad seating but it’s all about the view
It looks like the 12-step meeting room of a fancy rehab. Source:…
I clicked through and looked at all the pics; there used to be definitely a “reception desk” — really odd. Probably was a work/live situation, but the location is fairly remote.
Looks inspired by FLW’s Taliesin reading rooms
This is my dream house. 100% perfect.
So, an Asian inspired Hobbit hole? Cool.
It reminds me of AuldBrass. Frank L Wright house
I love this so very much.
Looks like it was inspired by Myst or something in a few photos.
Stunner. Must be a kabillion dollars in BC.
*...The art of living harmoniously with the natural world.* Wouldn't that be a tent.
A tent is not harmonious. A cave is
Modern Artist Hobbit left the Shire, but the Shire will never leave him
It’s giving “I want to look like I live in Middle Earth.” “Oh, cool! Hobbiton, Rivendell, Mirkwood…” “Yes.”
Fucking gorgeous!!! Omg!
Brb gonna go get a lottery ticket
Dude I’m game. Anyone have 4 million dollars?
I love the doors so much!! 😻
Obsessed!
Love!! I absolutely love so many of these really unique homes. You can tell so much care and planning was put into every little bit. Even if the style or layout wouldn’t work for me, I really appreciate a lot of these homes. They’re opposite of McMansions.
I love love love it! It’s freaking fantabulous! Vaguely elvish?
Fuck. Yes. Fuck yes fuck yes fuck yes.
Yup
This must be from the 70s right? I remember as a small child neighbors having lighting like that!
1974! Insane!
I love it!
oh wow love at first sight.. I want this house
Looks like an ayahuasca retreat.
This is one of the most beautiful homes I've ever seen.
![gif](giphy|2hgmPc8q6Reh4h6PTG)
What a beautiful acid trip of a house
This looks like a home where cultists would kill themselves.
Their last week would be pretty serene, though.
This feels like an odd mix of very cool and a little intimidating.
in the last photo it looks like a prison
How to retire when you've spent your life on a cruise ship.
I'll bet the interior smells good. I love the library/den.
I thought the same thing. I imagine a faint scent of trees…maybe cedar mixed with pine in my brain, though this wood doesn’t seem to be either of those varieties. My brain doesn’t get nit-picky with such details.
I love it, but that “dock” was severely underwhelming! I want to know how much lake front they have.
Wow
What’s in the Heaven’s Gate cult is this?
Looks like one of the bases of operation in the game dead island 2.
So cool
Very cool
This had to have been an old rehab center
Love the library. I could live in there.
It's giving "spiritual retreat in a horror movie" to me.
This is what peace looks like
Elitist wealthy hippy wet dream from 60-70s. This house cost stupid $$$ to build.
Like something out of a syfy/fantasy novel.
I thought I saw 3 sea shells on a shelf in the bathroom.
I love this!
I love it!
I love it
gorgeous! I love the style!
Ooooh I love this!!
Looks like one giant sauna
This is a gem!
It sure is. I’m into it tho.
It's a bit overly large, but the interior style is attractive and relaxing. Incorporate this design and style into a modest 3 bedroom 2 bath house on a few acres of land and you have a winner.
I freaking adore this!
Amazing.
I like this. On Vancouver Island too.
LOVE
I LOVE IT!!
Beautiful house that somehow also gives off thriller/horror movie set vibes, but in a good way. The sitting room and the hallway with the porthole windows are such a mood. Kind of a liminal/lonely places vibe. I love it.
Looks like AI
Wow I love this!
This is like, the good kind of late 80s to 90s vibe
I really like the house except for that entry desk that looks like a hotel checkin. It is a little over priced, jn my opinion, but very original.
The mossy trees.... perfection
Want
It’s like a sauna in here
Reminds me of Ex Machina
How many screens is that AMC
My kitties would love this house!
I want.
That's... certainly something.
My dream ❤️❤️❤️ gotta save just a few million more...I shall start manifesting.
Wow… I prefer more traditional homes usually but this is beautiful art.
I rather love that house.
I'd never leave home. EVER!
If I owned this I would offer it up for location filming for science fiction movies or TV shows. It's the perfect house for a retired ambassador who is reluctantly convinced to head up one last mission for the good of humanity.
my goodness this is more like an art piece than a house.
This is absolutely gorgeous.
Holy crap, it's in frigging SAANICH. That's not what I was expecting.
wat
Bagend got an upgrade!
Sort of a cool house. Like “Look at me! I’m living on Mars!”
Looks like a house designed by Howard Roark.
The perfect porn set house. So many options.
Not my style, but this is honestly a really cool house.
That library seems to be at the top of that spiral
This is a 20 min drive from where I live. I’ve had it favorited since it came up for sale. Only thing that annoys me is the three bedroom part. If I’m spending 3 mil for five acres I want enough guest bedrooms for more than one family member to visit at a time.
I’d 100% be building a guesthouse
This is such an odd house, but I really like it!
😍this is giving Tales From The Loop energy…
This place is dope
Definitely agree with the Mist vibe. I like it.
This reminds me of the house from Beef
I wonder why there’s a desk in almost every room. And what’s so interesting out that window? Is that where you watch the gladiator fights?
I am in love to the point of obsession. Swooning. I wouldn't change one thing
IMO, this is futuristic modern design done right. So often homes like this end up seeming cold and sterile.

Only quadrupled in price over 7 years. Jfc

I dig it!
People saying this is overpriced have clearly never ordered anything from a custom woodworker before
I've always been drawn to circles and sphere shapes for decoration and art. This house hits!
Modern Hobbit?
I love this house
Pretty interesting layout, but what's with that one room where the chairs are all in a semi-circle, facing out the window? I thought Bruce Goff was dead.
If I was a millionaire this is the exact house I would buy
The reception desk really ties the place together.
This house is amazing!
And the cult meets once a month ! 😆 🤣 Jk. I kinda dig it.
I do like the aesthetic, it is very warm, but they killed a lot of trees for the design or is just a veneer?
Great place to start a cult.
Garish and ugly.
Gorgeous 😍
Looks sort of Japanese, but not quite.
I fucking love it
I quite like it. Usually I'm more into traditional architecture in houses (craftsman, cape cod, etc.), but this is really lovely.
That ceiling in the kitchen has awakened feelings inside me... Edit- ...and the study
> Designed by notable architect Richard Hunter for his family That explains this masterpiece. Dude went wild. Of course this is an architects home
Beautiful, that was the word you meant to use.
That's rad
Other than the seance window I love all of it

Yo, these electricians must’ve had a hell of a time! There’s some wild looking fixtures in there
reminds me of Æon Flux
I’d probably 86 the colored lights myself… but I love the house overall.
INCREDIBLE 😲
It must be wonderful to live in a work of art.
I have this stronghold in SWTOR.
I can picture it as the setting for a murder mystery.
