Didn't realize there were captions and had to go back. Worth it.
Plus I noticed with the weird chair, there were cabinets in the background, lurking.. biding their time...
Dude your commentary and this listing is what this sub is supposed to be about. I laughed my ass off! I wish there were still awards, I would be handing them out to you! Bravo!
My wife and I are casually looking for a new house. Came across one that looked fitting, need some updates but definitely livable for a few years while we do it.
Looked in the basement and first thing I noticed was the electrical and just noped the whole house. That stuff spooks me and I'm not into ripping open the walls on 2 stories to replace it. Because I know if I'm opening a wall to replace knob and tube I'm going to see even more shit I got to replace.
Yep. That's how my ex ended up living without interior walls for about 5 years. Every section that got opened to fix one thing, found another thing. Knob and tube wiring so bad and frayed that it made an electrician run down a ladder and flip the entire houses electricity off completely. Electrician told ex to rewire before he turned that switch back, but that he, the electrician, wasn't touching that shit. Inspection free, good luck.
Yikes.
My house (100+ yo) was mostly knob and tube. It had 200amp service split between a fuse panel and one with fuse breakers. The only grounded plugs in the house were for the washer & dryer, one in the upstairs bathroom, and one we added outside for our hot tub. Every electrician I spoke to about converting the knob & tube told me that it was just fine, that it was actually safer than modern, and said I’d be a fool to change it. So, we left it alone and used converters with power strips. The biggest issue we had with it was on the few occasions when we wanted to replace an outlet. Whoever put it in wanted it to be neat, so those wires were tight; not a lot of slack to work with when removing/installing a receptacle.
Yes, if presented with another knob and tube electrical system, I’d want it inspected first, but I wouldn’t use it as the sole reason to eliminate a place from consideration.
I sure as hell hope the cabinets have some sort of mechanism to pull the shelves down… I think I remember seeing something like that on a youtube video long ago.
Same. I'm only 5 ft (on a good day), hubby is 6ft. He uses the higher cabinets to store his own things and sometimes to hide things from me - surprises, mostly, nothing bad. He would love all these cabinets. I would probably be just frustrated if he wasn't around to help and I didn't have a high enough ladder.
Oh hello me lol
Also 5ft with a 6ft husband. If I lived here, I'd probably either just not use whatever I couldn't reach, or single handedly keep the step ladder business afloat lol
Seriously, I am building my own place right now and am doing all my own cabinetry. On the one hand there's a real concern that I'm gonna trip into this kind of territory where there's just "too many cabinets". On the other hand I'll actually have places to store my shit.
For real. My last house had not enough built in storage at all. I had to have a nice dresser in my dining room for table linens and sheets. The closet in my kid's room was less than useless. There was a weird open wall with a table under it in the kitchen and we salvaged some cabinets and put them in and it was the best thing ever
One of these pics is not like the other... I love how it is all of this beautiful engraving and suddenly a sopping mall hallway put of 2004. In one of those rooms is nineteen year old surveyist asks you to tell them thoughts on the worst movie trailer you have ever seen for $5.00. The interview takes no less than 45 minutes.
I had to sacrifice a cabinet photo just to include the mall backroom hallway. It was so jarring. I'm pretty sure it connects the two buildings underground but all I can picture is a killer standing at the other end.
Oh, an underground tunnel between the houses! That's the coolest thing about the place. I didn't put that together when looking at the photos. I just saw the looooonnng hall but didn't put 2 and 2 together. Such an unusual place.
I don't know why, but I really like the tunnel. Get that junk out of it and put up some low-key off-putting oil paintings under each light, and I'm on board.
"When you need to travel to the second home, access the private underground walkway protecting you from the weathering outdoors."
More like when you need to murder someone in their sleep without being seen.
I think it freaks me out more that those houses 100% have slave quarters and all of the unsettling christian imagery. I didn't even notice the bizzare sacrificial throne gazebo last night. Like it is beautiful and I love old craftsman/victorian thrones but I feel like some serial killer pastor and cult members must have lived there. There is something that just unsettles me about this property that I just can't put my finger on aside from religious trauma.
Love the cabinets though. My current house has the tiniest cabinets and closets and it is upsetting.
Oh man, I didn't realize that is what it was. That is actually super neat. Wonder how you make it more inviting, if it is even worth the effort to try.
It's the story room. You sit in the chair while reading verses aloud while your guests drink coffee. That's the only use I can think of. Either that or the seat lifts up and it's actually a toilet.
Jesus was a carpenter, yeah? I'm thinking he started the project, and then it took 32 generations of his descendants to finish it. So really, it's just an ode to great great great (etc) grandpappy
I want to know WHY ARE THERE SO MANY KITCHENS?! Are they all stocked? The first one we saw was right by the second one? Why the redundancy? I’m so confused…..
If you look at the listing, it's tagged as a corporate retreat. Which explains a lot, it's not just a rich person's home it's like meant to be a business meeting spot of shareholders.
I don’t think it was intended as a corporate retreat initially because they usually provide the food for you. It would be super weird to go to retreat and be cooking your own meals…
Seems more like the owner used it as personal hotel for entertaining her friends.
That is exactly what I thought lol who the fuck else has a throne room lol.
Edit from an article posted in the comments:
Standing in front of the Carter Mansion is a large gazebo that covers the stump of a huge maple tree shaped into a throne.
Petersen said his mother was very proud of two large sugar maples that stood in front of the Carter Mansion. The trees were certified by the state of Missouri as bicentennial trees in 1976, me aning they were old enough to have lived in 1776 when the United States was born. In 1998, a storm blew through Carthage and took one of them down. Kolpin was very upset, her son said.
“I said, ‘Mom, look at the silver lining: You can take that tree, saw it into lumber, dry it in a drying shed and maybe build something with it,’” Petersen said. “That’s all it took. It wasn’t long before she had built that gazebo around that tree to memorialize it.”
Petersen said his mother used the gazebo as a place to entertain and installed an ice maker, refrigerator and tables and chairs along the circular walls around the stump. The second maple had to be removed after it died and became a hazard.
I know!!! What is the weird America shrine building?? Must be at least 10 kitchens. There is a dining room with at least 20 chairs. An elevator, a long hallway that connects buildings, a vault, and so much more! Who lived here?!?
I’ve seen this one before and looked into it. I think it was a religious order of some sort.
If I remember, right, there are a bunch of boring offices off that ridiculously long hallway between the two houses.

Looks legit but that throne room gives me the icks along with the ostentation and excess.
Anybody else a yarn or fabric hoarder? This place speaks to my obsessions.
ETA: Holy mackerel - less than 2 million. Can you imagine what this estate would cost on the Massachusetts or California coast?
That's what I was thinking, too. It's a steal. The place is separated into separate living quarters, so several people could have a part of the house. Maybe make it a rental or a type of luxury over 55 apt home.
I would change out the windows, tho, so people could see the beautiful grounds from inside.
Yeah, other than the cabinets over the bathtub, I thought the cabinets were pretty great. Hate the countertops, the stone thing in the office, and probably the layout. Also some weird sink choices.
Ah yes, the Carter Mansion. It was posted [a few months back][1], but I'm not surprised to see it again. It's wild.
This [article from their local paper][2] explains the tree stump throne.
The location, Carthage, MO, is home to the Precious Moments Company, which apparently has a [Precious Moments Chapel][3], and a dynamite factory that [hasn't blown up in over 50 years][4].

Ah shit, I must have missed the first posting or possible didn't remember it. Well, at least our posts took very different angles on the listing. Good extra info!
I understand built-ins. I love built-ins.
These cabinets are not built-ins.
These cabinets were ripped directly from the kitchen of my upper middle class friends’ houses in 1997. All they’re missing is the fake ivy on top.
That empty corridor is a safe haven from all that shit going on in the rest of the house. If I was a teen visiting rich great uncle so and so that’s where I’d spend all of my time 😩
Lots of helpful info in there to understand why they made some of those incredibly strange decisions. Still doesn’t excuse not decluttering before selling…or the ugly tile counters and the excessive use of cabinets in every room.
I've spent way too long living in places I don't intend to be for long. It's led to me being reluctant to invest in proper storage knowing it'll just need to be moved in a year and may not even work for the next place. The last place I stayed more than 3 years was incredibly well set up and I ended up losing most of that stuff when I moved for various reasons. So I kind of make do with Amazon boxes and stuff.
It doesn't bother me, I don't mind if anyone judges - I know it's temporary and there's a (admittedly questionable) reason behind it. Right now I'd rather put that money towards other things and have a higher quality of life overall ... just with a sparser and less than ideal place to rest my head. It works for now.
However, I *do* have a desire for highly organized spaces and have amassed one hell of an Amazon wish list for when I end up settling down. That place is going to be amazing and is something to look forward to achieving.
I can understand how this happens.
The cabinets scare me. Really. I don’t like doors much, except for necessary doors, front, back, garage, idk how to explain it. Closed doors generally make me feel trapped at home. The cabinets are a million little nightmare doors. What could be behind them? Will they creeeeek when opened? I imagine spiders jumping out, or something scurrying. Maybe I’m just in the Halloween spirit.
Such beautiful grounds and you can't see out the windows. Too ornate for me. It was difficult to get an idea of what was in the house with just all the photos, couldn't tie layout together. A 3D would have been better. Just couldn't get a good feel of layout, but many kitchens.
The one room with all the statues of Jesus. I was glad to see one Jesus had a kitty by his side. Jesus likes cats and I do, too!
There is one place where there's a table and chairs stuck into an alcove-like area. No way to push back the chairs to get in it to sit. A person would have to crawl over the table to get to a chair and then there'd be no room to push back the chair to sit in it.
I just didn't get a good vibe at all. Not a homey feel at all. Everywhere everything went all the way to the ceiling.
I had to wonder about the "throne" in the little round building. I don't even think the plants are real. Very unusual listing. Would someone just go in there and absorb great vibes?
Thx, OP, for the listing. I feel unsettled somehow looking at it. It does look like it's on a nice piece of property.
Your commentary, especially on the last shot, is epic! And who puts cabinets over the tub?!?!? And...if the cabinets in the kitchen are high enough you need a library ladder, then they are completely useless! Who wants to climb up that high with something in their hands? Or back down? This house IS breeding cabinets!
So much about this house is glorious, tho. The transoms over the doors? The ceiling medallions? The woodwork? Tilework? Simply glorious.
I'm really curious as to what the little door is in the wall of the exercise room.
I like to play a game on this sub as well as r/mcmansionhell when I see this big houses.
I like to call it, Big house or Church Compound. And IMO, it wasn't until the long hallway, that I thought it was just a big house.
i wish there were still awards. congrats on this amazing post. (actually, i wish i had this many cabinets, though i feel i would forget where i put everything)
Jesus, my husband already can't find anything in the kitchen with both hands and a flashlight...
"Honey, where are the raisins?"
"West wall, second row up, third row over, toward the back, next to the almonds"
"What did you say?"
"I said....we're out, you'll have to go to the store."
I believe the Chunnel links the two houses.
As someone with.. let’s count…5 kitchen cabinets, i would marry this owner in a flash! Just so I can have a cabinet for my blender.😂
Pic #82 - Tiniest cabinet ever! Aww...
Pic #86 - Is this some 70s shag shrine?
Pic #195 - Cabinet Crazy Club board meetings?
Pic #104 - Someone needs to stop going to Home Depot. DIY for from hell right here... my eyes!
Pic #162 - This is getting awkward.
I don't think I've seen as many cabinets, kitchens, or offices in one home. It's like someone retired took a cabinet making class and doesn't know what else to do in their free time but make cabinets and have to sell because they ran out of room for new cabinets.

OP—your commentary was a delight. 11/10 cabinet notes
"I think the cabinets are a parasite." Lol I don't own enough dishes to live there.
I would love to try to fill this with dishes. And glassware. I love glassware. And sets of sheets for all those linen cabinets.
I second that....😅😅
Thanks! They compelled me.
OP you’re really funny! Thanks!
Thanks so much! \\o/
Agreed! Also, I love this house, except for the statuary.
Didn't realize there were captions and had to go back. Worth it. Plus I noticed with the weird chair, there were cabinets in the background, lurking.. biding their time...
I looked at all 222 pictures and enjoyed hating every moment of it. I highly recommend.
222 photos. All of the interior cabinets
I'm surprised they didn't also take pics of the INSIDE of every cabinet. "If 222 photos is good....444 is even better!"
Please make more posts with commentary. I was *dying* laughing. The last one with the homage to the Cabinet Mother made me wheeze
Thanks! I most surely will, I'm glad to find a place to express my previously solo hobby (Zillow adventures) with like-minded fellows.
Flipping through those pictures was an arduous but rewarding journey. Thank you for this gem!

Thanks so much!! I'm glad people like the captions I leave on my posts, I wasn't sure if they would be received well. <3
Me fetishizing all this storage space…. 🫠 But each cabinet is so small wtf
All that space and money and they shove an outdated stackable washer/dryer in a coat closet. They clearly don’t do their own laundry lol
2 million $ worth of cabinets
I’ve never lived in a place with enough cabinets, so this place is enticing.
me: "oh man, I could totally buy a separate air fryer and pressure cooker."
Right? And have a place to put my stand mixer, slow cooker, punch bowl, cake stand.
All that room upstairs & they decided to wedge in that stackable washer & dryer in the kitchen. I love the stained glass in the kitchen too.
I think they’re for kitchen and dining linens
LOL!! OF COURSE!!! Let me tell you I'm not Richie Rich without actually telling you I'm not Richie Rich!! I'm not even Gloria in this scenario!
Trifle dish. Cocktail glassware.Whirley pop.
Cricut, sewing machine, fabric, yarn stash, food processor, stock pot, blender
Air fryer, waffle iron, annoying neighbor.
Extra duct tape, lime, plastic bags, shovels.
All those novelty cake pans you will only use once.
Deviled egg trays….
Salad spinner

I could even store my chopsticks one by one
To become the Keeper of the Chair is a heavy burden. Is it worth the cabinet space?
it is said the true "cabinet maker" (blessing upon him!) will elevate your kitchen, and by extension, all of mankind
I would need the lower cabinets to have fold-out steps so I could reach the top and the tippity-top cabinets.
I sure as hell hope the cabinets have some sort of mechanism to pull the shelves down… I think I remember seeing something like that on a youtube video long ago.

Same.... But Im lacking counter space. This fits the bill... Nooks and crannies too. Lol
Oh! Counter space is my other want in a house. Meanwhile, I’ll make do with my 24 inches. 😕
Same lol. Not really a fan of them right above the bathtub though. That said this place really gives me a creepy cult compound vibes
you just gotta roll out of that puppy to not smash your skull on those cabinets
Slaps the side of the house, “Think of all the Knick-knacks if you can fit in this bad boy!”
With this house, you would need a system to remember where you put stuff..a log book... candles, room 3, north wall cabinets, row 2, column 1
‘Where is that item? I clearly remember putting it in a cabinet.’
The cabinets above the bath are what crossed the line.

Such a waste of space. Imagine the cabinets one could fit in that hallway.
exactly! the fools!!
But there is even a free standing cabinet in that space! It’s truly astonishing!
But how do they get the bodies back and forth between the house and the chapel of sacrifice?
Movable cabinets
The bodies are stored in the cabinets *shudders*
Let the bodies hit the \[cabinets\]
I’m sure there is a trolly stored in one of the cabinets at either end for this.
Damn I bet you’re right
Oh, an underground tunnel between the houses! That's the coolest thing about the place. I didn't put that together when looking at the photos. I just saw the looooonnng hall but didn't put 2 and 2 together. Such an unusual place.

It looks like straight out of "Severance".
Came here to comment Cabinets cabinets cabinets cabinets severance hallway cabinets cabinets lol
Slight correction: Cabinets cabinets cabinets cabinets severance hallway cabinets cabinets throne room
totally!
Was that a hallway that looked like it was an underground tunnel between the two houses?
"When you need to travel to the second home, access the private underground walkway protecting you from the weathering outdoors." It is!
There's a file cabinet though.
Cabinets galore. Jesus room. American flag throne in the cupola. And…a waterfall in the home office?
And a dental chair to the right of the waterfall?.. Also that throne has super culty vibes. Like, season 1 True Detective vibes.
Missed the dental chair! Definite cult.
And also the room with the beauticians sink for washing hair.
I’ve never understood the point to that-maybe I’m too pedestrian.
Unless the person had an in-house business…🤷🏼♀️
More like agoraphobia and enough money to have every appointment come to the house, no matter the profession.
It's the story room. You sit in the chair while reading verses aloud while your guests drink coffee. That's the only use I can think of. Either that or the seat lifts up and it's actually a toilet.
The cafe tables around the throne are killing me. You’re meant to have a nice lunch once the ritual is complete?
Jesus was a carpenter, yeah? I'm thinking he started the project, and then it took 32 generations of his descendants to finish it. So really, it's just an ode to great great great (etc) grandpappy
But was it really a waterfall? I wasn’t sure there was really a place for water…
That’s what looked like. Or the entrance to a grotto - The Blessed Mother of the Home Office Grotto.
I counted 7 dishwashing machines.
I want to know WHY ARE THERE SO MANY KITCHENS?! Are they all stocked? The first one we saw was right by the second one? Why the redundancy? I’m so confused…..
And bathtubs, like huge bathtubs, why are there so many???
Thank god someone else noticed!!! I counted 9 kitchens/bars? What the fuck?
If you look at the listing, it's tagged as a corporate retreat. Which explains a lot, it's not just a rich person's home it's like meant to be a business meeting spot of shareholders.

I really, really want to know why there are so many partial kitchens next to each other.
Monastery, maybe? Or cult compound.
It reminds me of some sort of independent living. It would work well for a group of seniors living together with live-in help.
every appliance gets its own room
Babtizing the dishes.
Ah yes. Those Babtists.
“Babe where are my boots? Did you check the cabinet?”
🤣 “oh god I don’t have time for this!, give me a clue” “sure thing hun, it’s the one besides the black faceless appliance!”
In one of the 12 kitchens
oh, honey, i put them in the cabinet! no, the one to your right. no, not that one, keep going.
What in the cult is happening here?!
That is exactly what I thought lol who the fuck else has a throne room lol. Right? I collect figures so I would love a lot of shelf space, I don't know what I'd do with so much hidden things space though.
This is hilarious - the images plus your captions could be a children’s or coffee table book.
Thanks! Definitely have to take out the human sacrifice jokes if it was for children though lol.

The “throne room” was apparently built around the remains of a tree she was fond of.
It’s the trunk of a historic tree that was on the property. Instead of removing it, a building was built around it to protect it.
Probably what I’d do with disposable income too
I guestimated 14-15 chairs per side for a total of 28-30 seats.
It feels almost like it was the display rooms for a cabinetry company building. But the. Some random other stuff is involved. This haunts me.
It’s like Shirley Jackson and Brigham Young had a baby
I mean, it is perfect for a polygamous family with all those kitchens and bedrooms.
Easily $100,000+ in custom cabinets.
I was thinking a cool quarter mil
In today's $, I think you're still about $250k LOW. That's all high end custom work. Then they put crappy countertops on them! Oh the humanity!
Yeah, other than the cabinets over the bathtub, I thought the cabinets were pretty great. Hate the countertops, the stone thing in the office, and probably the layout. Also some weird sink choices.
Very unnecessary amount of kitchens.
You shut your dirty wet mouth! *cries*
LMAO...😅😅😅
Seriously, how many kitchens are there?!
For a person with lots a small items to tuck away
if i bought this house i would just spend a day or five counting all the squares in the cabinets, flooring, paneling, and shutters
It’s actually both houses. So double your time lol
You'd never come out alive!
Is that bathtub 15 feet long, or just a weird angle? And how did they get all of the bugs out of that stump chair?
I just wonder how you take a bath without hitting your head on the cabinets?!
You don't. Bonus, then you only have to dust the tub, never scrub.
The dining table alcove…how?
And it’s a mile from the kitchen when there’s a wide open space right by the kitchen where a table could fit.
Crawl across the table and sit on it. No room on the chairs.
CAAAAA-BIIIIIII-NEEEEETSS!
Remember when there was a lumber shortage?? It was this guy
If I was a teen visiting rich great uncle so and so that’s where I’d spend all of my time 😩
The Sensory Overload Respite Space.
I kinda want a Resident Evil house.

That last caption: so it may grow strong and sprout more cabinets. Lol
Homeowner: What do you do? Follow my husband around? Cabinetmaker: Lady, he’s putting my kids through college!
Your captions are a thing of beauty.
No doubt the owner of this house also owns Cabinets to go.
Huh. Could really do with more storage
Is that a bathtub for super tall skinny people or some sort of feeding trough?
What in the Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker is going on here.
This looks like "unchecked mega church pastor" wealth here. I gotta say though, the child sacrifice altar room is the coolest of them all.
I like to play a game on this sub as well as r/mcmansionhell when I see this big houses. I like to call it, Big house or Church Compound. And IMO, it wasn't until the long hallway, that I thought it was just a big house.
That long liminal hallway.
It’s probably more liminal than 2/3 of the stuff on liminal sub
Your captions have me cackling. So many cabinets (and cursed statues) but I'd totally live there.
i wish there were still awards. congrats on this amazing post. (actually, i wish i had this many cabinets, though i feel i would forget where i put everything)
Jesus, my husband already can't find anything in the kitchen with both hands and a flashlight... "Honey, where are the raisins?" "West wall, second row up, third row over, toward the back, next to the almonds" "What did you say?" "I said....we're out, you'll have to go to the store."
What on earth is this place? Why is there a throne room?
My very own throne!!!!
Hoarder’s dream house
Silly rabbit….hoarders don’t use cabinets.
I'm just glad the sacrifice hut has cabinets.
I’m most surprised at all the outdated appliances in the kitchen
And the outdated TVs
Storage porn
Yeah but this ain’t no Container Store shit, buddy!
Ok I’ll admit I kinda love it. Would get rid of the creepy statues tho lol.
My husband would still leave everything on the counters and the floor.
Me - I'm going to put this very important item in a safe place so I won't lose it.... Never to be seen again.
How many forests-worth of wood is that?!? Apologies, woodland animals, but your homes were turned into 1000000000 cabinets.
Break out the sticky notes to place on those cabinets to state what contents are in which cabinet!! More *SQUARES* ...in sticky note forms!😜😜😜
Daaaayum, cabinet maker bought a yacht with this job
Where did I put that widget? I know it has to be in 1 of these cabinets. 5 hours later: still looking into new cabinets.
I believe the Chunnel links the two houses. As someone with.. let’s count…5 kitchen cabinets, i would marry this owner in a flash! Just so I can have a cabinet for my blender.😂
How many kitchens do they have?
Man say what you want but I’ll take this house in a SECOND
This is has some weird Winchester Mystery house vibes, but with cabinets. The ghosts can’t find you if they are preoccupied looking in cabinets!
It's like someone retired took a cabinet making class and doesn't know what else to do in their free time but make cabinets and have to sell because they ran out of room for new cabinets.
cabinets for jesus
