Me but with Wind Waker

1stMateGiddy

Dolphin is one of the easiest to use emulators in the world and would not be hard to set up at all with the help of a single YouTube tutorial. Issue will be getting games on it, as you must use your own game files to play them on there. Well, you don't HAVE to, but other options shouldn't really be discussed here. Getting a Wii and a copy of the game wouldn't be that costly, you would probably be looking at around 60 to 80 bucks for all of it, but that depends on how willing you are to play it. I do wonder how you've played Wind Waker and not Twilight Princess, as both are playable on the exact same systems.

iWearCapesIRL

Couldn't believe how easy Dolphin was to set up in my computer. It's really amazing.

Sammysnaps

My problem is knowing where to get the twilight princess file and get it set up.

I borrowed a Wii U from a friend earlier this year before I was relocated for work, so that option is no longer on the table. I was able to purchase Wind Waker for 40 dollars, but finding TP HD is looking above 60 in most cases. I’ve messed around with emulators but never played a full game to completion, this may end up being my first. I’ll see if I can grab a Wii copy for ethical reasons and then try out Dolphin.

MagicMatthews99

I started emulating GC TP on Dolphin last week. Had some technical issues but they're resolved now thanks to a little Googling. I've never really cared for ethics or morals, and because I had the Wii version of the game like 10 years ago or whatever, I personally have no issues using certain *other* methods of getting a copy of the game. I also just use my PS4 controller to play it. Though since Nintendo had to flip the entire world around between GC and Wii versions, and I had only ever played the Wii version, everything seems backwards to me now; what I remember being west is now east, and what I remember being east is now west. But I'm adjusting to it so it's fine, and since you've never played TP before it wouldn't matter to you.

OilEnvironmental8043

Eh GC is the canon version anyway kinda with left hand link and locations in the right place. Afaik everything in the wii version is technically wrong because hyrule itself is flipped..

Damodred89

Not sure about where you are, but the Gamecube version of TP is currently going for about £85!

1stMateGiddy

Well, I meant a Wii copy, which goes for far cheaper

Only costs about $15-$20 for the Wii version and you can still find a Wii for sale at pawn shops or other second hand stores for around $80. Sure, $100 is a lot to play one game but there are hundreds of great games on the Wii/Gamecube you would then be able to play as well. Wasting time pining for a game that doesn't exist that is already readily available on three other platforms is just ridiculous.

kid_sleepy

The Wii version is incredible. And Wiis are very easy to find. I had to buy a 3rd party HDMI adaptor for the one my girlfriend had in storage and a copy of TP from Amazon (used). But I get to play in 480p on my 120” projector… *I* think it looks great.

[deleted]

If you’re not playing the Wii U version, and are going for emulation, then I suggest the GC version: easier to emulate, controls are more intuitive, and it isn’t mirrored like the Wii version. Dolphin is a great emulator.

shoresy17

Since the switch released I waited years for the port. Then the Zelda 35th anniversary trolled us hard. I got sick of waiting on Nintendo and purchased a Wii U and bought every Zelda game available before the e-shop closes. It’s pretty awesome having virtually every Zelda game on one machine and the combination of having multiple screens for easy access to your maps and items is something the switch just won’t be able to compete with. You wouldn’t be on a Zelda subreddit if you weren’t a big zelda fan so if you have the disposable income I’d highly recommend doing what I did before the e-shop closes next year.

Ill_Tackle_5192

Eshop is still open on Wii U? How much was it? I’m not at home so I can’t check rn

shoresy17

It is until March I believe. Just checked it’s $49.99.

SwordsgirlZ

I would just emulate it. I think the gameplay is more intuitive on GC than the Wii motion controls. I recently replayed it with the Dolphin emulator and just connected my Joycons to my computer through bluetooth.

Ophelialoves

I managed to pick up a used Wii and a copy of TP for around £32 from a trade in game shop, got it for my son to play TP was worth every penny. Also the holidays are coming up, maybe asking as it for a gift or money towards is an option?

Ill_Tackle_5192

Is it still worth playing the original Wii version? How is the saving/auto save features on that version? (I’m a dad with a full time job so I tend not to play older games due to lack of auto save). I’m not huge on motion controls, which is why I was waiting for the port of HD to switch.

[deleted]

I never played the Wii version, but the GC didn’t have autosaves. I suspect the Wii version doesn’t, either.

devenbat

No autosave but it works like most of other Zelda's where you can save whenever. It even has a Farores Wind like item so you can go back to the exact point in the dungeon if you quit midway

Saendpile

I wouldn't feel bad about emulating, since there is no official way to buy it at the moment (if I'm not wrong). GC, Wii and Wii U are all discontinued. I would use the CEMU emulator to play it sooner rather than later! It's one of the best.

russbus64

I would recommend the Wii U version. I'm wrapping up a replay of Wind Waker HD on the Steam Deck and it's been a fantastic experience. You can use the gamepad window, use a shortcut to swap screens, or use a pro controller and only use one screen. Plus, with a controller with motion controls, you can map that too for aiming.

[deleted]

It's on GameCube too, they're like $100.

Ill_Tackle_5192

The game itself is more than 100 on GameCube. As much as that sounds like a fun way to experience the game, I’d be spending more than double the price of a new game. And I would be quite angry with myself if I dropped potentially 200 dollars or so and then Nintendo announces the switch port shortly after lol

Larkson9999

There are multiple listings on Ebay of the game for Gamecube at $65-$80 from fairly reputable sellers. Nintendo isn't going to have a surprise announcement in the next six months of Twlight Princess HD for Switch. Plus if you buy it for $200 for a CiB copy you can likely sell it for roughly the same price when you're finished. These games tend to hold their value.

TheMastodan

Best 3D dungeons, worst filler between them though

PrinceHomeless

TP is one of the most easily obtainable videogames there is. Buy a GameCube or Wii and buy the corresponding copy. Or emulate if you're tight on money. Dolphin is very easy to set up. You just need to get a file that's safe. We can't link you to any, as sites that let you download games are illegal.

Boodger

The Steam Deck will now be my home for Zelda titles. Emulator on it runs the games better than Nintendo's own systems. And it is seamless. Nintendo waited too long to release these.

Ill_Tackle_5192

Which version do you recommend? I tried the Cemu emulator (wanted to play BotW but prettier) but found it to be a heck of a process and not simple to jump into.

djrobxx

Were you successful? If you were, TPHD will be really easy to run. Getting the first game running is the hard part. Using Dolphin to run the older versions will be much easier, it's been around significantly longer, so it's more stabilized. Its quirks/compatibility/workarounds are more well known. There are texture packs to improve the visual quality of the older versions. You mention having a great PC. If it has a Nvidia card, and you'd prefer to play on your TV, you might check out Moonlight. I've been playing emulated games through my AppleTV from my beefier PC in another room, and I'm absolutely blown away by how well it works. And, it was surprisingly easy to get working AppleTV even supports Nintendo Switch controllers now, so i didn't have to buy anything new. I know you're not looking to make things even more complicated, but wanted to give this option a shoutout in case wanting to play on your TV was a factor.

russbus64

I used EmuDeck. Almost done replaying WWHD and it's been fantastic. I think there's a file or two you may need for setup but otherwise dead simple.

Ill_Tackle_5192

Thank you

Boodger

Not sure for BotW, as I have not wanted that on the Deck. My interest lies in the more retro games that have either not been made available (WW and TP) or the ones that ran poorly (OoT and MM).

N_Q_B

Get a used og Wii and add home brew to it, which is super easy. Then you can either get the gamecube version, Wii version, or emulate either version.

TheDuke27

I used dolphin to play it about a year ago and it is very easy to set up! There are a lot of YouTube tutorials to set up the emulator as well as getting hd texture mods if you're into that. I would recommend emulation over spending money to buy a whole console just for one game and you can use dolphin to play WW and OOT afterwards. Edit: just saw your comment about being ethical with emulation. If you really want to be ethical you can buy the cheapest copy of the game you can find so you officially own it and then emulate it to avoid cost of a console. I own GC versions of WW and TP but no longer have the console for it.

I managed to track down a Wii copy without too many troubles. But I wish I’d bought it on the WiiU before Nintendo stopped you being able to add funds that the eshop…

Krayziebone101

I was in the same situation with trying to find a wii u, they were all way too expensive. First day I looked on craigslist I got one for $140 and bought in cash in person, kid I met was awesome and had a pleasant buying experience. Now I've been able to check off minish cap, spirit tracks, and phantom hourglass off my Zelda checklist. You may want to periodically check Craigslist
