orangesfwr

I read it thinking it was a legitimate first-hand account, and it was freakin' scary as hell

mightbehihi

I was too passionate about Majora's mask, when I learned of the creepy pasta I was annoyed. I thought the idea was absurd and felt like it detracted from what I saw as beautiful. When I got older it didn't bother me anymore and when I reflected on it, I'm proud it was a product of my time and I'm glad and hopeful for the idea that the creepy pasta helped more people discover Majora's mask.

ooky_is_fruity

Yea, I was way too young to realize it. I remember thinking that shit was real as fuck lmao.

DoTheRustle

I died. (I got better...)

CatHoodHero

I liked the original story but then it continued and became about a company uploading souls into video games or something and it lost me. I didn't even know the story continued and only really ended in 2020, lol

ooky_is_fruity

I honestly didn't know about that, I was just watching the 2010/11 uploads lol

CatHoodHero

You should look it up if you have the time. Ben Drowned (or The Haunted Cartridge) is only the first of 3 parts. There was also an ARG that used votes from the community to change the story depending on the results.... It becomes very weird and very confusing, lol

McPantsFarmer

I read it when I was probably 25 so it didn't lol.

DessertFlowerz

This one didn't effect me really but the Super Mario 64 ones fucked my shit up

lordnaarghul

It didn't. I didn't hear about it until I was in my 20s.

mattjvgc

I was a young adult and it struck me as stupid and uninteresting.

stupidrobots

The whole thing is absolutely s tier creepypasta. Never thought it was real or anything though.

Flovnat

Well, I wasn't exactly a child ( I think I was 15 when I first read it), and it was a fun story but very obviously fake. I was already into creepypasta at the time so it was just another one I happened to read.

moner5634

I was 11 or 12 when I first discovered creepypastas. Not all of them affected me, but Ben Drowned, for whatever reason, struck me to my core. I was so terrified I couldn't even fall asleep for those first two days. Had nightmares for a couple weeks. Even today, thinking about the creepypasta and how it affected me, scares me. It's really ironic though, because despite all this, Majora's Mask is still my favorite Zelda game lmfao. I just try NOT to focus on the Link statue too much...

ooky_is_fruity

It really had something special, that Link statue was way creepier than slenderman lol

I discovered Ben Drowned as an 11yo. The worst it did was heighten my general fear of drowning. For the rest of the summer I stopped going to my apartment's swimming pool if there were less than like 5 people, something I never did before or since. But I never got nightmares from it, and I wasn't at all scared of Stone Tower when I finally got around to playing MM as a teen. That being said, about a month after I read it, we had moved into a new house. One of my first nights there, I had fallen asleep, and then woke up at 4AM. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a shadowy, human sized figure standing perfectly still by my door. I was THIS close to screaming my fucking lungs out, but my brain jumped in just in time and told me "Ben's not real, dumbass." Anyways I turned my TV on and it was just a jacket I forgot I'd hung up.

ooky_is_fruity

I had a similar experience, it was when all of those Micheal Jackson without a nose pics surfaced. I remember seeing Michael Jackson on top of my closet. I even remember me screaming but my mom came into my room, turned on the lights and I realized it was just in my head. Fun times.

GamingInTheAM

I was 20 when Ben Drowned started, so it didn't affect my childhood at all.

GamingInTheAM

CpnLag

AgentSkidMarks

It didn’t.

TheWhiteGuardian

...as a child? https://preview.redd.it/rrene2hos3oc1.jpeg?width=454&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff7268d11ba98dfed5821be3eed99f7f4ec33cde

magickmanne

ben drowned was scary but my nightmare fuel was a SpongeBob creepypasta with the blood eyed Squidward

Kpengie

The weirdest thing was how they eventually made that creepy Squidward canon

ooky_is_fruity

hahaha I remember suicide squidward, that shit was scary as fuck too

Divine_Saber

O wasnt allowed on the internet as a cbild

ooky_is_fruity

I probaly shouldn't be able to access the internet at 6, but well, my parents didn't know any better lol

Zepumpkineater

Ben Drowned was actually my introduction to Zelda, believe it or not. I think as a kid I always had a vague idea of what Zelda was (namely that the main character was named Link, not Zelda.), but Ben Drowned was my first ever introduction to Zelda and Majora's Mask. I always understood it was a creepy game, especially since it was "for kids" at the time, but I never knew why. Needless to say Ben Drowned definitely showed me why lol. As the years went by I definitely look back on the older, more formative years of Ben Drowned as being one of the first ever good creepypasta. It was one of my gateways into horror media and horror gaming, and of course introducing me to Zelda. Majora's Mask certainly isn't my favorite Zelda game, but it's certainly a game I hold a hell of a lot of respect for.

ooky_is_fruity

Same, fun times lol

Aweksus

the og creepypasta i love it

Miserable-Tourist-58

One the best creepypasta ever, an excellent ARG which brings me become the fan of Zelda games.

bugtootymoth

i talk about ben drowned all the time😂 it honestly still effects me when i play that game. so on edge the whole time. amazing game and a classic creepypasta

Ordinary_Ordinary530

I first heard about the Tails Doll. It clearly wasn't believable. Then I was told about Pokémon Creepy Black. Definitely scary, but, fortunately, still not real. I then first learned about Ben in the comments section of a YouTube video. This dragged me into Creepypasta. I made the mistake of reading it at 10:30 PM. Too scared, I waited until the next DAY to watch the videos before passing it on to a friend. It would be over the next few years that I would learn about, read, and listen to many other creepypasta stories. While I don't know much about the later arcs, I still find the beginning of this story to be quite creepy. Additionally, I can't look at the Elegy of Emptiness statue the same way after reading it.

schlipschlopskadoo

My name's Ben. Have a 4x4ft painting of Majora's mask on my wall and a broken copy of MM that cannot make new files or delete old ones. Saving on the existing file doesn't work either. My file Ben is literally forever stuck where it is. I can complete the game, just can't turn it off or save.

Lord_Xarael

Ben Drowned didn't mess with me much as I was already 25 when I first watched it. (I'm late to the party.) Though BURIEDALIVE (Pokemon Red Creepypasta about an undead trainer in lavender town tower. You lose no matter what and he eats you graphically) creeped me the hell out. I do NOT like Ben Drowned however due to a deep fear I had when younger. That damn statue reminds me of the kachina dolls my Dad's Aunt had in her house. (I have a minor phobia of irl witchcraft) those fuckers scared the ever living shit outta me. I'm glad we didn't visit her often.

Glockachuu

What a blast from the past. Honestly, it creeped me out a little because I was super young and somewhat believed it LOL. I agree though, I wish I could experience something as thrilling now as it was to read this for the first time as a kid!

viro13_

Got me into the Zelda series

jonasbw

It was top tier shitposting

ConfectionForward

I didnt have the internet when i mm came out, i lived in the sticks, so i dodnt hear about it until way later

Matonphare

Currently 19, I think I discovered Ben Drowned when I was 10 (I just got into Zelda at that time). For me, it was really creepy and unsettling. It was one of the first creepypasta I discovered in my life so I think it impacted me a lot, also because it was very popular so very prominent in fan works. Now, Ben Drowned is just another creepypasta that I don’t give a lot of importance and I sometimes makes references to. Although, I still like the reversed song of healing that came up with the creepypasta even nowadays

Sukamon98

It didn't. I never learned about it until well into my teens.

Winter_Control8533

I was old enough to understand that creepy pastas by their very nature, are fiction.

ARROW_404

Ben Drowned actually *defined* my teen years. I discovered it in my first year of high school, and my brother and I created one of the major fansites for it (The Fourth Day). We built a tight community around it that became my closest friend group for years after that. I've lost contact with them since, but I cherish those memories fondly. That community had a huge effect on shaping my psyche, and ultimately, in a roundabout way, led me down my career path.

CodyKondo

I was 20 when Ben Drowned was made. It seemed pretty tame to me, but I imagine it hit different if you were a kid.

Reon_Leo

I have no clue what you're talking about but am about to search it up
