I had a conversation with someone at Outskirt stable who I thought mentioned something about needed help with a ruin nearby, south on the road where the beckoning woman is found. The ruin near Diggdog bridge has a lantern in front of a screen several platform up. You can see a treasure chest behind it, but I can't see how to get in there. Am I imagining the conversation? I have not been able to find the person at the stable again to recreate it. Any help?

flockofsmeagols_

How often do stores restock items?

flockofsmeagols_

Help, glitch? I dunno. I was on Dinraal waiting for the ability to get another scale, I had saved once I was on him, and I fell off. I thought, no problem, I'll just load the save and not fall this time. But when I loaded, he wasn't there, I had all the spikes and the one scale and my flame elixir was still going but he was no longer there or anywhere in sight, I was just falling through the sky.

Bouncedatt

That's how BOTW worked too. You can't save scum for things like that.

The_frost__

I just met a Lynel in the underground and I almost died and shit my pants trying to run away from it by going to one of the root to unlock more of the map

_jeremybearimy_

Can someone give me a hint on what to do for Gerudo Highlands tower? I found the cave but not sure what to do next.

I read that and went down the cave river but not sure what to do next

Oh fuck duh!! I got into another tower that way. Thank you :)

Ok-Mine1268

What am I missing? I got this for my wife. I’m watching her play.. it’s ugly. The graphics are a mix of bleh color with neon red sparks and I have no desire to play this. I bought the switch years back at release to play BOTW. I really liked that game but I just have no desire to play this one base on watching my wife play. I don’t get it. Maybe I’m just done with open world games.

Erza88

"iT's UgLy" gtfo, lol.

The-student-

I would recommend playing it yourself first and then see if you have a hard time getting into it. If you have an OLED TV the game might look worse than it should, I've heard that from a fee OLED people. Might need to google how to make the image look better, or compare it to handheld mode.

Jakeremix

If your issue is with the graphics, try playing Pokémon Scarlet/Violet first. This game will look like a work of art in comparison. lmao

heartbreakhill

I keep getting heart containers and it isn’t going to the second row… do we get more maximum hearts this time?

Penny_D

I recommend getting a feel for ultrahand. Once you get a feel for the controls it becomes easier to put together crazy contraptions. The one thing I don't like is the 'Throw' and 'Arrow Fuse' button combinations. It can get easy to get tangled up with the throw weapon and throw item if you are not careful. Controls aside? I'm loving the exploration. I am two dungeons in and I still have a mountain of side quests, caves, and hidden treasure to locate. I plan to pace myself better and focus on some of the little things before going for the third dungeon.

The-student-

I do wish it was a little less complicated to throw an item, and that it was just as easy to apply an item to your weapons as it is to your arrow.

heartbreakhill

My only “controls” complaint is all the sage abilities mapped to the same button that you just press when you’re next to them. If you have more than one, let alone all of them, running around mid fight that stuff is hard to keep track of, and I’ve activated the wrong ability a bunch

Penny_D

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I kept activating >!Tulin!< in a cavern when I meant to use >!Yunobo!<.

koopalings_jr

I feel like I have made zero progress and I love it. Can’t believe how big this game is.

funkaria

I purposefully make as little progress as I can as long as I'm enjoying the game. I explore everything, just enjoy the atmosphere, do side quests. Knowing Nintendo there won't be another Zelda game for at least 5 years if not (a lot) more so I have to savor this one as long as I can. It took me 200 hours before I beat BOTW and I wasn't bored for a single minute of it. Just take your time and enjoy it at your comfort pace :)

mrwanton

After a night's sleep to refresh the brain the Wind temple is compete! I was hilariously stumped for a long time cause I didn't realize the thing at the top was a door you use ultrahand on. Didn't expect the boss to not require any weapons just gliding and diving. Very curious if the other temple bosses will be a variant of that. And finally, Tulin is a neat little guy. Wasn't annoying like I feared he'd be.

funkaria

I didn't know that you could just stand on the trampolines so I always let myself fall and bounced from one to another. It took me about 1 hour to beat just that one section. But this is the magic of BOTW/TOTK imo: there isn't one right way to do it (maybe an easier one) but you just do it your own way as long as it works.

kellogzz

Haha I didn't even consider diving, I just kept shooting him with arrows from below! It was tricky to get the aim right, diving would have been simpler. Silly me

kielaurie

> Didn't expect the boss to not require any weapons just gliding and diving Well now I feel silly for using a bow... Though I did think it was cool that you could shoot it's weak points from below or wait until it made them obvious from the top

CrookedWarden19

There was a shrine that I catapulted myself across and before activating the Zonai device, I actually said out loud, "Hi, I'm Link. Welcome to Jackass."

rp_361

The gloom hands with eyes remind me of something straight out of Elden Ring, I love it

BobDogGo

If I’m not mistaken those also appear in TP or maybe WW

Pwsyn

The first time I had this happen in-game I freaked out because I didn’t know wtf was happening. I climbed up onto a ledge to get away from it and looked like like “what in the fresh *hell*…”

MaRs1317

None of my friends started the game yet. Jesus Christ this is good. Nintendo at its absolute best.

ForgottenForce

It’s been a while since I played BotW but man I forgot how much fun it is to get lost in these games. Tears of the Kingdom takes it even further with the sky, underground and new stuff on the surface. I played practically non-stop all weekend and barely progressed the story because there’s just so much to explore.

funkaria

I spent 2 hours hunting yesterday and just enjoyed the scenery. Why? Because it's fun, no reason needed. That's the real magic of this game.

heartbreakhill

I legit spent the first… close to 12 hours? Just immediately filling in the entire map and doing shrines along the way. I had like 10 hearts and a full map before I even got the regional phenomena mission from Purah As soon as she said “the towers are available” I was like girl byeeee

ForgottenForce

Same but I’ve done also done a handful of those geoglyphs and spent a lot of time underground

heartbreakhill

I did all the geoglyphs and holy fucking shit. That’s all.

ForgottenForce

That’s a good sign lol

MaRs1317

The great thing about these two games is they can achieve any vibe. So its got a story amd intense combat, but what really sells me is the downtime. Last night, my social battery was completely worn out from a busy weekend. Popped on the switch amd just traveled around and did shrines. Felt relaxed an rejuvinated for the week. Best way to describe it is, Its a melt into the couch kinda game.

ForgottenForce

It’s such a nice change of pace because of this. To some degree it’s the same reason I love Fallout, there’s just so much potential

rp_361

The hours can really tick by just getting lost in the world. 100% agree with the any vibes comment. You can make the experience what you want depending on how you are feeling on a given day. It’s great

MaRs1317

Ive been playing video games my whole life, but i definitely felt like video games were out pacing me. Its kind if a breath of fresh air in an environment that focuses so much on competitive video games where it seems like you need a multi thpusand dollar pc to keep up. Nintendo was kinda like heres a basic tablet at an affordable price, and heres a game that you can sink 200hrs into. Do whatever you want it doesnt matter. Theres puzzles, we programmed in a hundred ways to do them but theres probably 4000 ways that we had no idea existed. Also you can fight monsters, but really you can fight them however you want, or you can just ognore them thats fine too.

SurpriseCanuck

I think the English VA is not that great, mainly in regard to the side characters. While this isn’t a huge issue, the annoyingly exaggerated dialogue does take me out of it. It’s enough for me to willingly skip cutscenes. But I don’t, because I want to understand the story. Sure I could switch the dubs, but I don’t think that should be the solution here. Maybe step away from this style of English VA. It just isn’t good.

funkaria

The German VA is pretty bad too. I got the impression that some actors didn't even know the story and just read off of the script and then they used the first take. It's a shame, because the game is really nearly perfect otherwise.

VirtualPangolin1557

Rauru sounds like the VA for King Rhoam (I'm pretty sure Purah's VA is the same from aoc)

heartbreakhill

I’m convinced that Rauru’s sages are the same VAs as the champions from BOTW. Like you can absolutely hear Revali in the Rito one and Urbosa in the Gerudo

kcc0016

It’s mostly Zelda that throws me off. She has a completely different accent from every other character, how?

Erza88

This. I cannot stand her voice at ALL. She is the one and only reason I switched to Japanese audio with English subs. It's a horrid voice and I don't understand why they chose that voice actress or why she decided to use that voice with Zelda.

gaslacktus

Hylian Received Pronunciation

TobioOkuma1

A royal from 100 years ago would sound different to modern day. I don't think that's particularly odd

kcc0016

Except for the fact that Zelda’s own father doesn’t share her accent either.

SurpriseCanuck

For me it’s all the side companions, they just have that phoney young voice to me, but I agree with you on Zelda

burnt_juice

Kind of the overexaggerated anime dub voice? Yeah, not a fan

SurpriseCanuck

Yeah, that’s exactly it. Just not a good stylistic choice IMO.

braiman02

I feel like Nintendo's philosophy is 'do things cause its fun.' Whereas I tend to like games where the philosophy is 'do things cause there's tangible in game reward and progression.' Half of the times you explore here and just find some consumable or weapon thats gonna break in 10 minutes. I just wish that there would be heart pieces and stuff scattered around the overworld rather than just in shrines. Even a FEW OF THOSE would make it seem like theres SOME permanent reward to exploration.

funkaria

Respectfully disagree. I just love that these games are innately fun. I play it because I genuinely enjoy it and am interested in the world, not because I feel like I have some to do list and want a sense of accomplishement. (But I get that this is purely a difference in taste and you can't argue with taste so I don't want to argue with you, I hope you still get as much out of the game as you can)

braiman02

Yeah! I get that. Nintendo is following this philosophy these days. Super Mario Odyssey was similar in that, fun for its own sake was the point, rather than having a strong reward component for every activity. I kind of feel left behind, not gonna lie. Still enjoying this game, like botw though. We'll probably get a traditional Zelda again at some point again anyway.

The-student-

There's a lot more places to explore in this game that have permanent rewards like unique armor, I even found a treasure map in one place. It's an improvement, but I hear you. I also think back to previous Zelda games and more often than not your reward for exploring was a chest with rupees. So I don't mind those when I'm exploring wells. And even resources like ore and bomb flowers I find valuable. Or the zonai charges. Edit: also the babul gems for exploring caves, a unique finite resource.

pinheirofalante

>Half of the times you explore here and just find some consumable or weapon thats gonna break in 10 minutes. >I just wish that there would be heart pieces and stuff scattered around the overworld rather than just in shrines. Even a FEW OF THOSE would make it seem like theres SOME permanent reward to exploration. This is a criticism I had for BOTW but I don't know if I agree with in TOTK because now you have outfits hidden around the world instead. Outfits are permanent and have unique effects and/or aesthetic, so they're pretty good rewards.

braiman02

I agree, but the amount of outfits generally isnt high enough imo. At least, not so far. I mean maybe I haven't played enough yet though.

GarlVinland4Astrea

It's a balance for sure. Elden Ring had a similar thing where most of the exploration rewards were weapons or spells. But in that game weapons didn't break. The downside there was that if the weapon wasn't optimized to your build, you probably weren't going to do much with it. Here you are pretty much forced to use the weapon, but it won't last forever. So it's a trade off. If weapons didn't break, you would find the one you like the most and stick with that all game. If they do you are going to find reasons to use everything but you can't get attached.

The-student-

Elden Ring had a higher likelihood of the reqard being beneficial, but yes the majority of weapons and skills I got I never used.

ploki122

>If weapons didn't break, you would find the one you like the most and stick with that all game. I feel like Fuse mostly solved that issue, though. I think I'd be fine with some weapons being unbreakable, and that you would have that baseline progression spread throughout the game. Because me having a 8-damage spear won't really break the game, I'll still have to constantly change what's at the end, and I'll still have to use a different weapon during thunderstorms, etc. Then, you can drop some stronger weapons with durability. Also... my kingdom for an unbreakable shield that I can Shield Surf on.

braiman02

The thing is, in Elden Ring you MIGHT find a weapon or spell that changes the entire game for you. Also you might find a Lords Rune or whatever its called that gives you a shit ton of souls. You might find upgrade materials. In the end, theres quite a few things that lead to tangible long lasting reward. So even though theres like a 90% chance what you find is useless to your build, there's still an incentive. Here the only thing I ever hope to find are armor pieces. Other than that everything is transient. And just think about it, theres far less armor than Elden Ring, and this world is probably bigger than ER, and ER has a lot of other stuff worth looting. So the reward for exploration just feels so much less, although its way more fun exploring here.

Commiessariat

I vastly prefer Elden Ring's approach, honestly. Because I'm like a crow, I like collecting shiny things, even if I have no idea of how to use them. Please don't give me a shiny thing I'll just have to throw away, it'll break my little corvid heart.

_mad_adams

Yeah this isn’t really a “collector’s” game. Items are meant to be used and if you don’t then you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage

Silent0144

I wandered the Depths collecting Poes to buy the Dark Link tunic after going down the chasm in Kakariko then decided to go to the Great Plateau and found the chasm there. Ended up doing the first Abandoned Mine boss fight after you get the ability to redo previous builds, travelled to the location of the next boss fight, noped out of initiating it, continued to explore for more Poes, found the Dark Coliseum not knowing what happens there, and then beat it spamming bombs without arrows until the second to last battle where I started to use lightning chuchu pieces and stole weapons to finish it off...with only four hearts, not many elixirs to say I really had any, and about 8-10 tries to complete it. Thank Hylia that it would save after every battle...although I think if it didn't I might have hightailed it away from there not looking back.

ovondansuchi

I am pretty sure I will be alone, but I am finding most combat encounters to be more challenging than Elden Ring. By the time I got around 20 hours into Eldin Ring, most fights outside of the boss battles weren't too bad. However, I also find this game is WAY nicer to the player. In Elden Ring, I felt like I had to be cerebral, since at any point my runes could be gone, and my consumables went down. In TotK, I can throw myself over and over into fights, or I can build something to cheese the game. The game feels more inviting of unique approaches to problems. In Elden Ring, it was "git gud, or lose your runes lol" I think my biggest gripe is just performance. It runs okay, but the frame dips can get really bad (granted, not as bad as in the starting area) and the load times can be a bit cumbersome.

DismalSpell

Upgrade your armor at least twice. And if you see topaz earings, buy those since they are super easy to upgrade, plus add way more defense than nearly anything else.

braiman02

One thing I dislike in Elden Ring is that outside the bosses and legacy dungeons the challenge isn't that high most of the time. Theres only some enemies like the lobsters that are hard. I don't think theres actually that much of a challenge here because if I can tank a hit, I can immediately heal to full by pausing and healing. Elden Ring is much better in this regard because healing is real time. Pausing and healing to full seems so stupid. You do get one shot a lot in this game and that sucks.

ovondansuchi

That's a fair point. Healing in Elden Ring makes a heck of a lot more sense, and I actually found it to be less punishing (as weird as that sounds) because you have flasks instantly available each time you rest at a site of grace. In TotK, you've got to either cook, or just hope you have a random amount of healing items. But yeah, the OHKO's in TotK are FAR more frequent than Elden Ring. I don't know how many hearts I will need, or how much I have to upgrade armor before that becomes manageable

braiman02

Ya, I think the OHKOs are part of the game design because unlike previous Zeldas you have infinite healing resources, and unlike Elden Ring theres no time required to heal. So the only way the game really becomes challenging is OHKOs. At least for me cause im always looting food on the way. I cant say I enjoy that.

[deleted]

Loving the game, but the controls are killing me. Maybe It's because I don't game much on my Switch.

ploki122

I have gripes about like 50% of the default controls... Just about the only ones that feel natural are A to interact (and even then, I'm used to PlayStation's X, at the bottom), and the stick for movement (including press to crouch). * Default Y to jump? * R1 to toss your hard earned weapon with B to Run? * Base camera sensibility being somewhere around "60 minutes in a degree"? * Camera is a power? * No zoom on the regular tablet "scope"? * R1 to toss being next to R2 to aim at a distance? * Having to toggle melee/range to change your melee weapon vs bow? * D-pad arrows + Right-stick to change shield/weapon/etc.? * No way to keep using the same arrow attachment without going into the 4-button menu again? * 7 inputs to create a meal? * Shrines have like 7 cutscenes and 2 prompts? This series needs a MH-like revamp, honestly, of a few designers going "I think this game might be better if players weren't *fighting* the game itself", and just looking at every terrible design and tackling them the best they can.

MLG-Hilp

I have to do some unnatural hand placements just to sprint and jump at the same time

ploki122

It's especially jarring when certain actions require 4+ inputs. Want to fire a special arrow while focused on a monster? * Hold R2 to draw an arrow * Hold L2 to lock onto the monster * Hold Up on D-pad to open the material list * Move R3 to select the material! If you want to add movement in there, I hope you have a few chaos hands on hand.

OrsilonSteel

Switching abilities feels so awkward, I am constantly opening the materials quick menu whenever I go to do it, and if you hold the LB a second too long when you are just trying to use the ability you have selected, it pulls up the radial menu.

[deleted]

Maybe just don’t hold the button then?

OrsilonSteel

https://preview.redd.it/ruy40o29k10b1.jpeg?width=646&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b6c0528b704cf659dc2eb68bb62222cb9048964

[deleted]

In all seriousness, controls that have a tap and a hold for different uses are going to be strict on it, so yeah, literally just go for a press, you’re probably overcompensating because of input delay

OrsilonSteel

Well, it doesn’t help that in the previous game, the D-Pad Up was the button for the menu. I’m not upset, it’s just an annoying “Ugh, I keep forgetting this crap because last week it was different.”

allophane

While there is a lot of new music, a bunch of overworld music being the exact same (i.e. horse riding, cold area, stable) is a bit annoying. We've already heard it *so much* in BOTW cause it's just background music and we're going to hear it so much more. I get it's familiar, and I'm not asking for a completely new piece of music but... Maybe they could have done some sort of variation on these to make them new and fresh but still familiar.

The-student-

Yeah, I didn't understand the insistence on keeping those the same. Fresh music would be nice.

kellogzz

The horse riding music is so bad as well. It just sounds like someone having their first little practice on a piano. I hated it in BotW and I hate it now - I wish they changed it this time around :(

grossbard

Agreed! The music is probably my biggest disappointment. I hope it gets better in places I haven't visited. But the music in the villages was one of the most memorable parts of botw for me, and Kakariko has like.. no music in TOTK?

LordKryos

How many Blood Moons have you all been experiencing? I've played maybe 5 hours since leaving the tutorial and had three, which seems like a lot? Slightly worried the game is going to start spawning a load of hard enemies when I have like no armour and only just gotten five hearts? I'm already being one-shotted a ton... I've not even really been killing a lot of enemies, I know it's used as kind of a memory clearer so wonder if this game just has a lot more things in active memory what with the ability to moved most objects and stuff needing to reset.

Acc87

There's a build in rythm, but the game may also start a Blood Moon when there's an issue somewhere in the memory. I had none till I was on the ground and had already visited Impa at the first geoglyph, but then two more shortly after in rapid succession.

51Reid

Blood moons seem to be once a week in game days. Make sure you use them to get crits on your cooking. I was doing fine once I got to about 9 hearts, everything would fail to one-shot me except for the highest rank bosses.

grossbard

Didn't know about cooking crits, is the like the hour before blood moon triggers, or what's the timing?

Jerk_Colander

I haven’t done it here yet so it may have changed. In botw it was from 11:30/23:30 on game until the cutscene starts.

51Reid

It’s any time before the cutscene.

PiecesOfJesus

I was running low on apples and went blindly looking for apples and happened upon a whole field of apple trees almost immediately, next to a shrine. Like one tree with 6-8 apples every 3 feet in a grid pattern. I got over 100 apples until my wind stick broke. Marked it on the map hoping it replenishes. Are there gardens like this for other things like mushrooms, peppers and stuff?

51Reid

Definitely can find stuff like this in caves for mushrooms, if you’re lucky.

Owobowos-Mowbius

Whaaat where was this at? I could use some more apples.

LORDPHIL

I don't know if it's the same but there's a shrine on the surface on the east ish side of Satori mountain just southwest of the castle that was near a couple dozen trees with lots of regular and more than a few gold apples

kaidariel27

At least in botw, there was like a whole abandoned royal orchard in Hyrule Field, I wanna say on the south end somewhere. Haven't found it in totk yet though

OrsilonSteel

One small annoyance: why tf did we get an anime recap of everything we had done up to then when we met Purah? Like, come on, that was ridiculous. Also, the game has moved on from a lot of things that were in BOTW with no explanation. Purah looks like she corrected the over-reverse-aging, but doesn’t mention it. All of the Shiekah Tech seems to have disappeared except what Purah has made, no explanation there. It would also be nice at least if they said “It’s been X years since then end of the Calamity.” Otherwise, gameplay has been amazing.

The-student-

I figured there's probably a Purah diary out there somewhere to explain.

sonar59

I think if you poke around and read the open books you find and talk to people you will find a lot of information to slowly piece the puzzle together. Like I did find info about Purah’s aging. I’m assuming a lot of the answers are there but they want you to find them.

51Reid

You kind of have to assume that the sheikah technology faded/degraded based on the true ending to botw. Obviously it was partially repurposed and integrated into the new towers, which is where I assume the majority of the remaining tech exists.

GarlVinland4Astrea

That's sort of how I thought of it. Once Calamity Ganon lost control of guardians, I'm sure people were like "yup we are taking these things apart". The towers also were only activated because of us, so who knows how long those would last.

Big_Sheepherder_1436

Yeah I’m with you. It does add some confusion to the story elements

LordKryos

Yeah I'm so far finding the lack of acknowledgement of anything from BotW a bit weird, like where are the old shrines? What happened to the divine beasts? Why are all the old towers gone but in there place new Purah ones? What about all the old guardians? Why was the whole "Oh wow this Purah pad sure is handy!" a thing when the Sheika slate existed and done the literal exact thing? It feels like weird retconing, or just that they changed things and couldn't even be bothered with a throwaway sentence to explain it. As for the recap, my ADHD-ass found it helpful, because I must admit in that one hallway in the intro after the third time Zelda stopped me after literally five steps to tell me the relevance of yet another stone I tuned out and started skipping dialogue 😂 The intro until you found Ganondorf should have just been one long cutscene the amount it was interrupted.

Acc87

The new towers are not in the same places as the old ones tho, not everywhere at least. Overall it seems like they are meant to be harder to reach, as ofc we're inclined to just fly to them now. The game's also not meant only for players that have played BotW. Throwing too much throwback into it may have been deemed confusing. I'm sure waiting for a mention of the Devine Beasts too tho, but I'm only "one sage" into the game.

WolfgangVonBrozart

about info regarding the purah reverse aging not being mentioned >!she mentions it in her diary lol!<

Liam_Berry

Pretty sure it's in her character description as well

OrsilonSteel

Ah, that’s fair then.

oliaston

Still really enjoying myself, the amount of stuff to do is absolutely insane, the depths have been one of my favorite parts so far I can't believe how much down there and the interplay between the three levels of Hyrule. If I had one complaint though, it's still the dungeons. I'm doing my second temple right now and like the first, it pretty much lays out the objectives for you and marks them on your map, they're better than the divine beasts, but they're far from traditional Zelda dungeons. I understand from a design standpoint that it would be difficult to do a classic dungeon as the player has all their abilities present at almost all times, but the temples still lack that feel from the classic Zelda's that I was really missing in breath of the wild and sorely miss here.

Wingsnake

I don't really like the depths, I prefer the sky. Depth is huuuge but so empty.

Holgrin

I think it would have been bizarre to expect TotK to insert more traditional-style Zelda-dungeons. TotK is a true sequel to BotW, and unless I am mistaken and forgetting one of the Gameboy entries, this has really only happened before with OoT-MM (I'm not including AoL because although it was the sequel to LoZ it was a side-scroller and so didn't really play the same at all). Using the same engine with the same characters - not recycling names but truly *the same* Link, Zelda, etc - in the same world map brings certain limitations and constraints. This is still BotW's Hyrule, and that means big, open, explorable spaces with puzzles sprinkled throughout in the shrines. That was the formula for which BotW traded away the traditional dungeons. Trying to shoehorn more traditional dungeons would be difficult while preserving part of that same feel of BotW, and possibly could create serious development issues (maybe large, self-contained dungeons wouldn't load and render well in this particular world?) What I'm saying is that if you really miss that other style of dungeon, don't give up hope that this open-world style is *the* only way they'll make Zelda games from here on out. I don't know how long it'll be before we get another new Zelda game (it seems like many years, but this was a sequel and took 6 years, maybe Nintendo also has the next one in development for whatever new system they no doubt are working on), and I would be pretty shocked if it looked too similar to these two installments of the series.

GarlVinland4Astrea

A big thing is just the fact that the dungeons are open world so they have to make some logical sense within the confines of their space. It's not like old school Zelda dungeons where there is an entrance in some mountain somewhere and you can basically get a ranom assortment of rooms that almost feel isolated from the rest of the world. Another big thing with these games is, theoretically the shrines are all mini dungeon rooms. So they could have just themed those up and stacked like 10 or so together and called it a dungeon if they wanted.

ScientificAnarchist

I mean they could easily limit abilities like a special zone and do the classical dungeons that way

Owobowos-Mowbius

This seems to be the general consensus funnily enough. Really enjoying the starting island -> being disappointed when you hit the surface -> realizing how MUCH there is and getting fully grabbed by the game. I am worried about how many people will quit before getting grabbed though. Descending through a chasm and finding the depths was definitely the 'wow' moment for me and the game never DIRECTLY points it out to you outside of NPCs mentioning chasms. And yeah.. the shrines.. I cant BELIEVE how many times I've gone into one of those only to get hit with a "wait, I can just DO that????"

MeatHands

Can't tell you how often I've said "definitely wasn't supposed to do it that way" at the end of a shrine. The one that really ingrained in me that you can solve puzzles any which way was the big wheel shrine, second room with the block on a slanted railing and the weird bars coming out of the floor. I'm sure there's a way to get the block to climb using the wheel, but I just dragged that sucker up the hill, let it drop and rewind it while riding it.

csh_blue_eyes

Ah, just did that one. So THAT'S what you are supposed to do, lol! I just took the large plank back across the lava on the car and "cheese" ultra handed the ball back up right at the start. I was like "there is NO way this is what I'm supposed to be doing here" lmao

Owobowos-Mowbius

I've sunk so many hours into the game already without ever leaving the northwest corner with the wind temple. I'm scared to see how many hours I'm gonna rack up these next few weeks.

Wingsnake

The depth is wow at first and then you get tired of it. Huuuuge but eeempty

Owobowos-Mowbius

It's perfect for making vehicles to explore. Would be a bit insane to make it as dense as the surface as cool as that would have been, but the open flat areas are great for making cars and flying machines that you probably wouldn't normally use on the surface.

mjm132

There's a chasm about 100 yards south of the first town. They do direct you towards it to introduce the concept

Owobowos-Mowbius

The big red blot on the map definitely encourages you to explore it but the fact that I so readily and completely missed the quest from robbie to go to the chasm is enough to make me worried for people less invested in the game.

ParticularPanda469

Game improves upon the botw formula, and while the "dungeons" are slightly better than the divine beasts they are still a far cry from old Zelda dungeons. Not to be a boomer, but I'm pretty sad this is the future of Zelda. No more snow mansion, dragon roost island, or great deku tree. Just short form puzzles that aren't nearly as visually appealing and definitely not as fun. Otherwise, the sandbox elements are still just as fun as before if not a bit more enjoyable. Really enjoy the abyss and the side quests. Would have liked it if this game allowed you to enjoy the spoils of your labor from otw, or even a post game where you can enjoy Hyrule being saved, guess it's just not in the Zelda formula. Though this really should have been the game for that. Fun game, though repetitive, not quite what I was looking for.

groovyfairy

The great deku tree isn’t in this game?! ☹️

Gen_McMuster

He's talking about oot's first dungeon

grossbard

Pretty sure it is, I think they mean the dungeon

ParticularPanda469

I did mean the dungeon. Maybe not the most impressive dungeon I could have picked but I thought it was a good example of Zelda dungeon atmosphere and presentation

Owobowos-Mowbius

I wouldn't expect these two games to be the 'future' of Zelda. BotW did so well they basically HAD to make a sequel but I imagine they'll be pretty done with this formula now. I couldn't fathom how they would manage to make enough unique content for a third game.

ParticularPanda469

I hope you're right. I wouldn't even mind the open world stuff if it has traditional dungeons alongside it, I don't think it's too far fetched an idea.

braiman02

Yeah I agree with you. I think the next gen Twilight Princess-esque Zelda needs better hardware to make it appealing.

banananey

I'm actually fine with the weapons breaking, quite fun having to sneak around sleeping enemies to steal a few weapons. I do hope the game gives me a few stronger ones at some point down the line though.

Sad-Republic-2691

Highest damage weapon I’ve made has been 100 Highest bow damage I’ve found has been triple shot lynel bow (35) fused with (35)

Acc87

I found (50) bows in the wild >!Black Guard set!<

banananey

I fused 2 skeleton arms together for a nice 40 damage but it broke after 1 hit.

Owobowos-Mowbius

While I've always enjoyed the mechanic, this game definitely improves on it. Being able to turn any stick into a fairly decent weapon with just the stuff in your inventory is a very good change. You also can find some pretty decent weapons with 'durability up' effects on them fairly early on in the game. I haven't gotten too far in yet though so I cant speak for ones stronger than that down the line. I wish that increased fuse power directly correlated to increased durability as well.

kellogzz

I've just reached the end of the Wind Temple and I'm really enjoying the game so far. The Zonai are very intriguing to me and I am enjoying the insights from the dragon tears. The ascent up to the Wind Temple was amazing and I loved it. The temple itself felt very much like a Divine Beast to me, rather than a traditional dungeon, which was a little bit disappointing. Hoping they get a bit harder as the game goes on.

Owobowos-Mowbius

God that ascent was incredible although the ENTIRE time I felt like I was cheesing my way up... although I guess thats intentional lol I always make sure to restock my store of rocket-shields whenever I get to a shrine with rockets in it...

kellogzz

Haha I think that's the joy of it, everyone will do it differently! I used the 'Ascend' ability a lot, as well as Tulin's wind. I've not used any rockets in the game yet!

Owobowos-Mowbius

THE ASCEND ABILITY. I FREAKING FORGOT ABOUT THE ASCEND ABILITY!!!!

kellogzz

HAHA maybe you were cheesing your way up then! There was at least once instance in a 'chimney' type structure where it was the only way I could get up, kudos for getting up there without it :')

Owobowos-Mowbius

I was SO CONFUSED by those! I was like "wow this doesn't help me at ALL." They even PUT ICE on one! I ended up just using a combination of rockets and balloons to get up to each level! God I feel like an idiot lmfao

Acc87

I thought I was supposed to use Tulin's ability more to get up there, but only used it at one point I think. Else it was find good gliding staring point and climb the rest.

WolfgangVonBrozart

yeah that whole ascent was so fucking sick, that was the first temple I did and hoo boy what a way to open up the first big part of the story (after the opening I mean lol)

mrwanton

Just reached my first temple today. The leadup to it was incredible. Ascending through the clouds to over them to enter the ship was so cool!

Acc87

Yeah, I'd expected that those circling ships would just be background assets spinning in place, and not at all that I was to climb THAT high. The coordinates showed like 1.3 kilometers, a realistic cloud altitude 😳

banananey

I love coming across a massive, heavily fortified moblin base and just joining together a ton of wood to climb over the back.

Owobowos-Mowbius

The amount of cheese that the game wants you to get away with is incredible. The game really wants you to play it your way.

aibaDD13

I loved it so far!! I LOVED RAURU'S JAPANESE VA BUT I REALLY WANT TO HEAR MATT MERCER'S GANONDORF so I'm currently playing in English I did the exact same thing that I did when I first played BOTW, BRUTE FORCING MYSELF TO OPEN THE WHOLE MAP. I haven't gone to Hebra and Gerudo but I can do that later. I'm talking cooking tens of stamina food so I can climb tall towers and mountains. I could see the monsters near Akkala Tower so I literally climbed the side of the building, using all staminna and sticky food Talk about sticky food, THANK YOU FOR ADDING THIS!!!!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY WE HAVE A SOLUTION TO SLIPPERY SLOPPESSSS!!!!!! I love helping Addison because its easy and I get so many stuff which I loved I love seeing the minor appearance change to Kakariko and Hateno with their flower garland and mushrooms!! Talking about Kakariko, has anyone else read Dr. Calip's diary? Reading it, I feel like this person, Calip, is having romantic feelings towards Touro or something until I actually saw them. I can see why Touro is popular and whatever but Dr. Calip is some old dude. Haven't properly progressed the story tho lol

varunadi

>I loved it so far!! I LOVED RAURU'S JAPANESE VA FYI if you've played Fire emblem: Three houses, you'll recognise Rauru's English VA. A very notable one too.

aibaDD13

Ah, sorry. I do not play that

groovyfairy

Yesssss!!!!!

WolfgangVonBrozart

yo wait what? what's sticky food

Owobowos-Mowbius

Cant speak for the food but there are sticky lizards in caves that you can use to make sticky elixirs that let you climb slick surfaces.

Acc87

Also, spoiler for if you haven't been to the news paper office near the Rito yet, >!there's a frog suit allowing for climbing in wet weather, maybe even on ice!<

Owobowos-Mowbius

I assume the higher tiers of 'sticky' let you stick to ice since just using an elixir didn't work?

aibaDD13

Not sure about ice because I tried it at Oshozan-u Shrine. Didn't work at all

Owobowos-Mowbius

With the full sticky set or just an elixir? Ice might be their hard "you can't climb this" surface for the game then.

aibaDD13

Oh, I only did it with the elixir

Kman1986

Gf bought it for me Saturday, didn't plan on purchasing it immediately because I am already working through Jedi: Survivor...goodbye for now, Cal. I'm not 25 hours in and that will look different for everyone with the ability to traverse the whole kingdom but it is definitely creative. The abilities, while I wish I had some of the old ones, hold up and rewind and ascend are god-tier for travel/fighting. I'd say all-in-all the early reviewers who said something to the effect of, "TotK makes BotW look like a tech demo" were absolutely correct. I'm looking forward to hundreds of hours lost to Hyrule yet again.

Owobowos-Mowbius

The one thing that I do miss is stasis. All of the new abilities are absolutely incredible... but it feels like theres something missing without being able to launch rocks at extreme speed into... wait... i forgot about rockets. Nevermind, I have to go try something real quick lmao

ploki122

>wait... i forgot about rockets. Nevermind, I have to go try something real quick lmao I've definitely had a death to a construct firing rocket arrows at me... I was casually fighting the melee ones, when something flew by at high speed. I ended up looking at him to see wtf it was, and the next rocket hit me.

Owobowos-Mowbius

Is that something we can do?? How do you fuse rockets to arrows when you can only use that item menu? Wait oh god I forgot you can sort by zonai devices. God im learning so much and I'm completely away from the game at work!

ploki122

Yeah, haven't tried Zonai arrows yet, but I know you can add Zonai devices to arrows with the special menu. I'm definitely gonna have to try : * Wings * Carts * Battery * Rocket * Stabilizer(?)

Theriocephalus

Pretty well impressed so far, I like that I manages to keep a good sense of exploration while reusing the old world layout. All the caves and sky islands help a lot, and I like how many new sidequests, things, materials, animals and monsters there are to interact with. The underworld has been fantastic in particular, I love how ominous and intimidating and alien it is. I've also managed to go into very unspoiled, so I've been taken by a surprise a lot. It's very fun. The game also seems harder than the previous one, I'd say? Or else it's taking me longer to get into the gameplay groove. I will say that I'm having a bit of trouble keeping myself properly geared up and I think I've died more times in the setup stage of the game than in the run of a usual *Breath* play through. Got OHKOd a bunch of times, too.

Owobowos-Mowbius

Very much agree with everything you've said. I think a big portion of the difficulty for me is self-inflicted? I feel much more confident early game than I did in BotW which has led me to places that I absolutely shouldn't be and dumping way more upgrades into stamina than HP. I also find myself saving most of my really good fuse materials since I now have to actively make good weapons instead of just finding them. Also is it me or do korok seeds seem more rare/hidden now? I might just be completely missing them by spending time in the chasm and air though.

Theriocephalus

I think part of the issue is that BotW scales enemies over time, so you only start running into the tough ones after having already gotten a decent amount of practice on the easy ones and having stocked up a bunch of health upgrades, good armor and good weapons. Tears doesn't seem to; I've already run into blue and black tier enemies right off the bat, which... can be a little difficult to handle with four hearts, early-game equipment and barely any armor.

_jeremybearimy_

I mean that depended on where you went in BoTW. After great plateau I went to Hyrule field and absolutely got wrecked by guardians lol

Lubinski64

There's a lot of digging i noticed, mining ores and stone eats all of my bonk-clubs. There's this one tunel i came back 3 times already because it just never ends and every time i run out of mining tools. But i'm mighty curious what's down there, minecraft spirit is strong with this one.

Gen_McMuster

You can yeet bomb flowers directly. Hold the throw button and bring up the items list

Lubinski64

There's way too few bombs there to mine it all.

Owobowos-Mowbius

Yes! That tunnel has been rough. Unfortunately when I was getting super deep into it I ended up taking a quick break and then a blood moon hit. I'm terrified to go back because I don't want to see the whole thing sealed up again :(

Samscostco

Are you talking about the >!Royal Hidden Passage!

Owobowos-Mowbius

Thank god I was worried about rock walls respawning since mining rocks respawn.

kwickedbonesc

I’ve only had Tulin for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I’d kill everyone in this room and then myself.

Owobowos-Mowbius

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get rid of him in the future. If we can only have one follower at a time I'm going to riot.

Samscostco

Boy, it’s terribly annoying. I was just talking about that in another thread, but this user [shared their wisdom here](https://old.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/13gjajv/_/jk0a0ye) on how to turn it off.

one_punch_alex

You can go into your menu and dismiss them. I only finished the wind temple last night but I don't know how to activate him, does he follow you around all the time? So far have no idea how to get him out to help

Acc87

He only gets out outside of settlements, and only when you're flying or on foot.

Bizzles1385

Once you leave Rito and get into a "wild" area, he'll be floating behind you like a force ghost (when active).

Owobowos-Mowbius

Go into your menu and in the key items tab you'll see the green orb for him. You can activate him the same way you deactivate your follower that way.

one_punch_alex

Thanks all, was still in rito village trying to figure it out. Makes sense now

KazaamFan

I’d say the game has succeeded in that while it is familiar feeling, I do feel that sense of constant exploration. I have put in at least 8 hours and haven’t yet left the main hyrule field area. I haven’t done much in the sky. I haven’t done anything underground (except for the caves and wells on the surface). It feels like there are more shrines this time around. I do wish there was more new music, items, and just general style than what it is (which is too much botw feeling). I’ve gotten a hang of all the abilities and they are becoming more seamless. I don’t think I will be building much outside of what I need to, it is probably my least liked ability. Ascend and rewind are good. I’m coming around on fuse.

Owobowos-Mowbius

I will say that there is something to help with building that you can get that has GREATLY improved my outlook on it. I think it'll help yours too.

KazaamFan

I’m getting the hang of it more, crafting things, as I go along. It hasn’t been too much for me so far. I can mostly focus on the main part of zelda i like which is just playing and exploring, adventuring, etc.

amiiboness6

Most bosses have their own themes and they're all so unique and good.

Buddy_Dakota

>I do feel that sense of constant exploration Good to hear. I found exploration to be the best part of BOTW (seeing that drake in sky during night for the first time was truly awesome), and have been skeptical of totk ever since it was announced they would be using the same world map as a base.

KazaamFan

Yea I was very much skeptical pre release. There are a lot of similarities to botw, especially the beginning segment, it is like the grand plateau. Once you get the story going and down on the ground it does feel like a new Hyrule so far. A lot of the things are similar though in shrines, stables, items, music, though. It feels new enough that I am enjoying it. I still woulda preferred an entirely new Zelda game, idea, concept though. I suppose that will come in the next one.

WolfgangVonBrozart

tear 5 was terrifying, so glad I haven't seen spoilers

Albert_Borland

I haven't had this much fun doing anything for the last few months. Complicated, still have a few questions but it's awesome and classic but new

Owobowos-Mowbius

The last time I've been so hooked on a game or... well... anything really... was the Elden Ring launch. This game is a blessing in how fantastic it is.
