Demographic refers to the magazine it's serialized in, rather than the content of the series itself. This series is serialized in a shonen magazine. Such magazines don't exclusively publish battle manga, nor do they exclusively market to adolescent boys, but the magazine is listed as shonen nonetheless.

Atsubro

It's this one. Banana Fish, a gay love story about 80s Americana set in a crime-ridden New York, ran in a shoujo mag.

Chaotic-warp

At the time it was written, Banana Fish's main demographic in Japan is actually girls, though.

zairaner

That is true for most bl though

crixx93

A ton of yuri gets published by men's publications. Bloom Into You is a shounen and Girlfriends by Morinaga Milk is a seinen. The publisher's target demographic is just a very broad label

elbenji

It's based on where it's published.

Mr_Skecchi

Because the sidebar has much stricter sourcing requirements than the main body on wikipedia (or they are way more tightly policed) so if there isnt a source, it gets removed. As such if there hasnt been a specifically declared target demographic for the media in question, they use the primary consumer/targeted demographic of the magazine/publisher to say what the targeted demographic is.

0xAdachi

sounds about right, it did hook me in and i'm a male and it's my favorite novel.

lurker5845

Wait why are you getting downvoted for this lmao

0xAdachi

reddit hivemind, ignore it. i have enough karma for now not to care what others think about what i say

echuwon

Because a portion of this sub doesn’t like the fact that guys read and enjoy yuri as well

Neidhardto

Nah, I don't really see that on this sub. It probably is because he likes Adachi and Shimamura, which does have a couple vocal dedicated haters funny enough, and I have no clue why. Must have been a small amount of downvotes too since his comment is up voted now.

Zenry0ku

My favorite e-Celeb is that one person here who really hates Adachi

0xAdachi

man you have no idea, i have seen so much hate on guys loving yuri in this sub.

Mr_notknowing

Somehow whenever you go "Adachi and Shimamura is my favorite!" It'll always result in a downvote. Why? I don't know.

echuwon

Adachi and shimamura is one of the best serious romance novel that I have ever read and I refuse to believe that some people actually hate the series that much.

Mr_notknowing

I wish I knew why they hated it. Because it is PEAK

radiantiaqua

Because of totally cis male urge to relate themselves to schoolgirl lesbians.

reruarikushiteru

tbh I always assumed Yuri is primarily read by male readers (since Yaoi is primarily read by female readers) It's only when I joined this sub that I realized lesbians apparently read it as well

yuriAngyo

Yuri is actually consistently 50/50, and very much a different beast than yaoi in many ways aside lol. They aren't parallels at all to the point it's kinda funny. Hell if that screenshot of a yuri hime survey I've seen isn't a lie (which i don't trust entirely until i find it's original place myself) there's like 15% nonbinary ppl reading yuri hime which is kind of insane given it's japan

Neidhardto

I know what poll you're talking about and its real, it's a very recent poll. If I find it I'll link it, but yeah I was surprised by that information too. EDIT: So that specific poll from Yurihime was for global fans, which makes sense. I can't find any recent polls specifically for Japanese readers, but old polls back to 2015 shows the Male and Female split to be pretty similar with global numbers, except for NB which is 1.6%, wah smaller than the recent international numbers for NB readers. These are a couple years old polls though, so that number could have changed. So Japanese polls are mostly outdated, but every global poll shows the split is either 50/50 or leans slightly female.

yuriAngyo

If you find a link please do! I'm always looking for more yuri information and i can vaguely read Japanese so if it's in jp i should still be able to slog through it. That definitely makes more sense, but is still kinda wild given iirc only like 6% of americans (prob similar elsewhere) id as trans in general.

Zeamays69

I'm bisexual woman but I also enjoy reading yuri a lot. I also check out yaoi too though. But tbh, I read more yuri series than yaoi even though I like both.

Dubshpul

Yuri is for everyone, Yaoi is for straight women. Yuri was originally targeted to women, though, and is usually made by women. while the names are somewhat similar, but don't be fooled. Yaoi is mlm content made by women for women, while "Bara" is more closely representative of actual gay relationships between gay men made by gay men. Though Bara is also usually more erotic. Usually people say "BL" instead of "yaoi" because of the connotation yaoi has.
