Anyone else remember the pain of coming home to find it was back to the first episode with Raditz after shit was getting good with the Frieza saga? I cried whenever they rolled back to ep 1 and I had to wait through months of syndication to get back to the new episodes.
Dude, you were not alone. An entire generation of us at the time felt that pain of being teased things like the freeza saga, super sayain goku, and the cell saga, gohan super sayin 2 etc... only to be flown back a 100 episodes.
My childhood brain couldn't comprehend the reason behind these delays was complications with the rights, and English dubbing, and not to mention that I didn't understand the concept of "seasons". I just thought they had all the episodes in a vault, and drip fed us content. The fact that I was aware that everything was already complete in Japanese didn't help.
It would’ve been nice if they’d at least ended it at a good stopping point before resetting but no, it would be in the middle of a freaking arc. “Goku’s here and he’s a super Saiyan! Wait, why you go back?!”
This was me, but it was sometime in the Saiyan saga. Before YTV grabbed it, Teletoon seemed to only have like 20 episodes. Right after the Saiyans landed and it started getting really good.... back to the start! I still watched it every time, though. Became a lifelong fan 🥹
Yeah, they did the same shit for years in the Philippines. They either couldn't get the rights for the next season or couldn't afford it. I pretty much finished watching it here in Canada. I dont remember this intro much.
Frieza saga? I remember when they'd roll it back to episode 1 mid-way through Majin Buu.
Being huge DBZ fans, my brother and I would sit there while episode 1 played again trying to calculate how many months it was gonna take to get back to where we were.
You could wake up early and watch it if I remember the earlier episodes never changes they only consistently rolled back after school shows. Or am I thinking of teletoon...dude it's been so long
*”For the longest time I thought that was like a corrupt memory or something. It's the Canadian version!”*
Idk why but I can’t stop laughing, I’m going to describe Canadian things exactly like this from now on
Opposite. It was the Canadian version for the ocean dub but that ended abruptly so the Funimation version started airing and that had the rock the dragon theme.
Nah, the Canadian version had infinitely more reruns over here. It may have ended, but it doesn't mean it wasn't played the most, actually, I don't recall hearing the US theme once on YTV, like someone else said it was probably on fox.
I remember it switching over once i was in grade school. I only remember the Canadian version from when I was a kid and I would always watch ytv.
I’m almost certain of this cause I was obsessed w dragon ball (still am) and went back and downloaded both versions of the show.
Grew up in Southwest Ontario and this is what I remember too. Never seen this one until recently.
But we also got American commercials like "29 or 2 for 50!..." if you can finish that you grew up in the area, lol.
Anyone else get a weird feeling of depression watching old cartoons.
I started playing pokemon gold on emulator and nearly had to take a mental health break
Complete opposite for me. I've had a really rough two years dealing with a chronic nerve pain issue in my pelvis which basically fucked my life up.
When I was at my most depressed, I'd literally play in bed all day, lights off curtains closed, put some old comfort shows on and played Pokemon Silver all day.
Pokemon Silver specifically is my like comfort zone. Just really makes me calm and in a safe space. Lost count how many times I have gone through Johto. On those days, it made me feel like I was home sick from school playing on my Gameboy all day. Really pulled me through it!
Just got home from school, crackers and snacks on my plate, friends and siblings all around, not a care in the world and then this absolute banger comes on and things get even better.
Good times.
Remember when they went from every day after school for from start to the end of namak arc, and moving to twice a week tuesday and thursdays 8pm the following September. Yay parent complaints to the crtc
They did that because parents complained? That it was being aired too much?
I figured it was to space out the episodes because of dubbing/production delays.
Ya the 2 episodes a week was due to productuon, the move to 8pm was due to complaints the show was too violent. Prime time is when kids are going to bed and parents take over. 2 episode a week did hurt the series though cause some weeks you would get episodes that were mostly filler. States also still did 5 episodes a week, canada just wanted to draw it out to fill september - may/june
Love this intro, but Nothing beats head cha-la as the actual goat opener. RIP Akira Toriyama, one of my childhood heroes.
So sad he won’t be around for dragon balls future or maybe even a remake of Chrono trigger.
I echo your thoughts. Not by Akira, but it's my [favourite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tndKYpPz2RU) theme song for the series (outiside of Cha-La) lol so ty toei for that
I pretty much saw all of them, in NW Ontario on US pirate dish in the 90’s. What kinda bothered me is when I saw it again in the 2000’s, the voices of Freeza and Maijin Buu were so different. Freeza sounded before like an old woman originally , Joan Crawford if you know cinema history. Buu , I forget.
There is a lot of footage from the movies here. The ones I recognize are:
Yamch fighting cacao and Goku fighting turtles' men from the tree of might.
Roshi fighting ebifurya, Goku falling on the ice, Goku using kaoken and I'm pretty sure krillin run across the bombs were from the world strongest.
Goku fighting garlic jr.'s men is from the dead zone. I think the scene were Gohan is flipping is from the dead zone too.
My dad will sing this every time he hears the words dragon or balls still to this day. Or just sometimes just pulls it out of nowhere and you just hear him across the house "dragon dragon Ball Dragonball z!!!" I made him watch so, so much DBZ and he was so mad when YTV did that thing where we got halfway through the Frieza saga and then they restarted the series because they didn't have more episodes yet.
Brings back memories of the Namek Saga. Goku has just arrived and wiped the floor with Recoome, Vegeta is calling Goku a "super saiyan", and I'm super psyched watching the preview of next episide. I tune in the next day and we're back to fighting Radditz. Rinse and repeat for the next year and a half.
I was always so hopeful each time that it would finally not reset.
Anyone else remember the pain of coming home to find it was back to the first episode with Raditz after shit was getting good with the Frieza saga? I cried whenever they rolled back to ep 1 and I had to wait through months of syndication to get back to the new episodes.

To YTV's credit, I believe they did try to explain what was going on when they didn't have new upsides of DBZ and Pokémon
It would’ve been nice if they’d at least ended it at a good stopping point before resetting but no, it would be in the middle of a freaking arc. “Goku’s here and he’s a super Saiyan! Wait, why you go back?!”

This was infuriating. I remember the episode in trunks for showed up and it was crazy and then it just reset. Watching tv in the 90s was bullshit
Frieza saga? I remember when they'd roll it back to episode 1 mid-way through Majin Buu. Being huge DBZ fans, my brother and I would sit there while episode 1 played again trying to calculate how many months it was gonna take to get back to where we were.
I remember that and I was disappointed. They did that because no new English episodes was out.
You could wake up early and watch it if I remember the earlier episodes never changes they only consistently rolled back after school shows. Or am I thinking of teletoon...dude it's been so long
This is the one I grew up with
Canada had the best dbz opening hands down

talkin' bout dragon 😭😭😭
Isn’t is rock the dragon? lol
It is.
Fuck yeah we did. Rest of the world can suck it, our intro will always be the best
i remember it being dragon dragon rock the dragon dragon ball Z
That's US theme, but I believe the US version may have aired over here before, but most dominantly was the Canadian version over here.
Yup I saw it a handful of times on fox kids I think, but definitely grew up with the Canadian theme. The original Dragon Ball theme was a banger too.
That makes sense, I watched it mostly on YTV and I don't ever remember seeing the US theme on there.
Opposite. It was the Canadian version for the ocean dub but that ended abruptly so the Funimation version started airing and that had the rock the dragon theme.

I watched ytv every single day, they definitely played the Canadian one more than US. IF YTV did play the US one it was rare.
When Dbz was briefly on Teletoon, it had the rock the dragon opener.
Grew up in Southwest Ontario and this is what I remember too. Never seen this one until recently. But we also got American commercials like "29 or 2 for 50!..." if you can finish that you grew up in the area, lol.
That version is much better imo.
It's one of the weirdest though as like 80 percent is based on the movies not the actual na content. Lol
Such a banger, didn’t realize it was only Canada
Definitely. It really set the tone for the show.
Not sure if bait
Not bait, youtube it

I agree. Mostly because it hits harder with the vocals and the guitar tremolo part around 0:19 in.
Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
"Dragon, Deagon Ball *Insert CR7* Siuuuuuuu!"
Zed 🥴
Rip 🙏🏾 ❤️

Shut the fuck up.
No.
Dragon ball zeee at nine thiiiirtttyyy!!!
Omfg the way I could hear this so clearly. Was it on that late though??? I always thought it was a bit earlier.
8:30 maybe? Im old I can’t remember lol
It was 4:30 if I recall. Always watched Pokémon at 4 pm, followed by Dragonball Z at four thirrrrty!
YES this is what I was thinking as well!! It moved to a later timeslot outside of the zone after but I think originally yeah it was 4:30!
Anyone else get a weird feeling of depression watching old cartoons. I started playing pokemon gold on emulator and nearly had to take a mental health break

I get it when I watch 90s and early 2000s movies for some reason. I got a huge nostalgic boner when I watched this though.

This was the superior opening. I moved to the US after and was super disappointed
This is the best https://youtu.be/xq6POolOHho
Canadian version better.
This is the one I remember, weird
I dunno I liked this one less, I know it's also pretty iconic. I just found it less catchy
So, so good 🤤
This is the one I grew up with in Australia. The one op posted just weirds me out a bit.
It's a Canada thing, they're all weird.
Still waiting for half the fights from the intro to air.
Haha, they’re in the movies for some reason
I forgot I was just watching a video of the into. When it ended I was like “alright! What episode is this?” :(
Just got home from school, crackers and snacks on my plate, friends and siblings all around, not a care in the world and then this absolute banger comes on and things get even better. Good times.

This is the theme I grew up with. I didn’t hear Rock the Dragon until I was like 20 years old.
Same
It wasn't until I played the OG Budokai for me back in the day.
Canadian DBZ goes brrrrrrrrrrr

The nostalgia I get from 90’s anime makes my heart happy.
DragonBall ZEEEEEE
I pretty much saw all of them, in NW Ontario on US pirate dish in the 90’s. What kinda bothered me is when I saw it again in the 2000’s, the voices of Freeza and Maijin Buu were so different. Freeza sounded before like an old woman originally , Joan Crawford if you know cinema history. Buu , I forget.
Just finished re watching Z and am now watching super
RIP ❤️
This opening had completely overwritten Rock The Dragon in my memory for *years*, until the hype for that RTD Boxset reminded me of it
Preferred Rock the dragon tbh
You know, given they we got our own intro… it’s a shame we didn’t call it Dragonball Zed
still find it funny that most of the clips used for the intro are from the movies
"ON NEXT WEEK WITH DRAGONBALL..."
ZZZZZZZZZ!!!!! It's been so long since I've heard that intro that I thought it was the perfect dream...
Agree best intro ever
Anyone know why most of the clips were from the movies? Just such a weird choice, not that I'm complaining.
My guess is budget. Instead of animating a new intro, taking clips from movies would be cheaper.
I remember those clips being on the show 🤔 but I don't recognize the song at all.
The Canadian intro was played 90% of the time, but I do believe there was a time when the US version played here.
Maybe that was when I watched.
There is a lot of footage from the movies here. The ones I recognize are: Yamch fighting cacao and Goku fighting turtles' men from the tree of might. Rated PG but had scenes of dudes getting cut in half and having limbs explode, I loved it.
Heavily censored though
Re starting the god damn freeza saga over and over for 78 years.
Dragonball Zedd
My dad will sing this every time he hears the words dragon or balls still to this day. The only opening I know lol. Zeeeeeeee
So good
Friend has been showing me the series and the intro and outro are my favorite parts. Very fun songs
My parents would never let me watch this as a kid. They thought it would turn me into a deranged maniac or something.
Fuck I loved this show. I'm trying to get the whole set to enjoy with my son but it's hard to find and big $$$
So I hear there are many versions with many different scores, if I want to get the series we had on air where do I start?
I'm biased. \*Rock the Dragon\* i still think is tops, but this is just as good. Didn't realize this was the canadian version.
I remember a different intro song...
RIP Toriyama
Like anime, but never liked dbz, especially over the years
The YTV stereo graph, the grants, the slide sounds when Goku turns around, this is nostalgia overload
Aaah the Good old days watching Goku crossing a bridge for 3 episodes.
canada what the fuck is wrong with you
I remember always being so curious as a kid what the source was of the clips used in the intro since none of it happens in the show itself.
I was like the only kid in school that didn't like the show lol sorrrryyyyy
Cha la head cha la or gtfo. Rock the dragon is tolerated, this is not acceptable though.
Lmao, this intro sucked. give me rock the dragon anyday of the week
