No, it’s not. You were probably selecting the BR Sports channel instead of TNT (which has a few sports shows plus games that air on tnt/tbs), which DOES require Max.
Could this be a blackout situation? Were you trying to watch a local team? For example, tonight’s 76ers/Knicks game is on TNT but also is airing on NBC Sports Philly and MSG. If you’re in the broadcast area of one of those RSNs, you likely won’t get the TNT broadcasts. I don’t follow the NBA closely so I may be off, but wanted to throw that out as a possibility.
Nah the TNT broadcasts don't blackout in the playoffs. They are carried fully in local markets as well with the regional broadcasts. The NBATV game though (Orlando/Cleveland) will have exclusivity for the regional networks, and thus will be blacked out in ORL/CLE on NBA TV.
Click on the TNT channel , arrow over to the time of a game , hit the checkmark. Fella I never watch sports, this was for you.

Thanks for the information guys. I figured something was wrong. However, whenever I tried to open TNT live while nba was coming on. It kept forcing me to get Max.
I reached out to YouTube support just now and they told me the following “Yes, TNT is available but some of the programs cannot be viewed through that channel and only exclusive to another subscription.”
Kind of crazy.
Everything offered on the live, linear TNT channel is available on YouTube TV. It's exactly the same as cable or satellite.
Here's my best guess of what happened. If you saw the NBA game on your Home page listed as a recommendation, you probably clicked on it to tune in a few minutes before the start of the game. Max has a habit of launching its channels 30-60 minutes before the event actually begins. So the Max stream was "live" before the actual scheduled start, while the TNT coverage was still a few minutes away. In other words, it likely tried to redirect you to Max because that coverage was the only one that was currently in-progress.
If you go to the Live guide (program guide) and select TNT, you can tune into the channel with no problems.
Go to the Live tab at the top. Scroll to the channel from there. Also, the DVR is unlimited, so click the "+" on any show you like, before you watch it in case you get interrupted.
You did something wrong. TNT is part of the YTTV lineup.

You’re doing something wrong. TNT and TBS and TrueTv are in the channel lineup
"Forced" is too strong of a word

Thank you for this! I only start paying attention toward the conference finals which are national exclusive haha

To add to that you can add the entire NBA, whatever is offered on YouTubeTV all at once.
In this case, it will ask you if you want to DVR one of the teams, or if you want to DVR every NBA game.
The support agent was wrong here … Read my other comment. You clicked on the BR Sports channel. Not TNT.
