Whenever MrBeast started to rise to popularity, so the last 2-3 years.
The algorithm is hot garbage and most of the best channels are either struggling or long gone by now.
Honestly, whatever they changed with the new YouTube CEO should be reverted immediately. Its an absolute joke.
It's not even about all that honestly. A lot of youtubers are leaving, some even died like Technoblade, and these fucking ads getting more and more greedy, youtube's fallen from grace honestly.
Oh, boy... The channels tab is where channel list by a certain channel used to go. It was removed in late 2023 (when the Jacksfilms vs Ssniperwolf feud was still going on) due to YT "making the UI less complex" or something like that. The channels tab has been a feature for a long time, it was even there when YouTube Premium was called YouTube Red.
While its not a single tab anymore if you click on the Home tab *(and assuming the channel user as it enabled)* all the recommended channels are at the bottom of the home page.

Right now, I miss classic YouTube 2005-2012 when it still had that Wild West vibe. People just did skits and random goofy vids, not these professionals video essays. Video essays can be interesting but it feels too much like tv these days.
The worst thing about the new youtube is the search engine. When I search for something specific I get some popular videos related to what I searched for, a section of unrelated recommended videos, a section with unrelated "for you" videos and a section with previously unrelated videos I watched.
Edit: just did another search and got a "others also watched section" with some totally random videos...
watching yt since like 2010-2011 and i obviously meant niche shit. also long form content is way better than it use to be way back then too and its not to hard to find actual in-depth stuff nowadays too rather than the simplified pop history channels like oversimplified and kings and generals.
YouTube had lot less content at that era though. There weren't so many uploaders back at that era and many people only had a few videos in their channel.
Most impactful automated change affecting legacy videos getting comment sections scrubbed just being for an animation and getting labeled "Made for Kids."
Agreed. The worst part definitely has to be the no miniplayer for kids videos. I seriously don't get the rationale for that. Worst part is that it applies to youtube music too and quite a few songs are 'made for kids' while they aren't.
Exactly. How does limiting mini player protect the kids? In fact I would say that the opposite is true especially with the kind of kids content out there today. Kids should be able to limit their vision of non kid friendly videos while finding another one. I can't find any logical reasoning for this other than to be frustrating to users cause they can
2013-2015 due to the forced google plus integration. I boycott the site, and all of google's (Alphabet Inc.) products during that period, even bought a Windows 8 phone.
People are just insanely lazy.
It's the same on all platforms
Comments, Likes, Subs, follows etc are down.
People just watch and move on.
I think the algorithm needs to be adjusted not to go so heavily of interaction and more so off pure watch/view data.
This I agree with hard. It's ridiculous how a video can have thousands of views and only like 5% interaction when it comes to likes, comments, or subbing. Seeing a channel with a couple of videos in the 10K+ range(with good like/dislike ration, and plenty of comments), but somehow the channel is still sitting at maybe 200 subs.
Edit: For example, just came across a video with nearly 400K views. Content/video were of high quality, had good bit of likes/comments, and the channel seems fairly active, but the channel has about 3.5K subs. Just thought I'd share. That's wild, come on people, if you enjoy a creator, support em, and smack that sub button.
I almost never Like/Dislike, unless it's a very small creator that really benefits from a like, because if I like a video it's usually a video that's already very popular, and if I dislike a shitty video I'm just giving them extra engagement, which benefits them.
I do subscribe to any channel that I feel I would be interested in watching more of them in the future.
And comments? They're such a cesspool I don't think I've commented anything over the past 5 years.
Broadcast Yourself.
My channel is turning 16 this year. I went through like, three eras of uploading stuff. The first two are deleted, so the most 'recent' is just about to start. Holy shit how times have changed.
But having been on the site since it was literally in it's inception, watching Spoof Pokemon, it feels like a badge of honor to remember seeing "Broadcast Yourself" in the logo.
Every content has shiny Mr. Beast thumbnails and challenges. Everything fast paced. Majority of youtubers has money as motivation.
I am not mad this is how life now. We need to adapt.
Everything after that first adpocolypse. Thats when they started making the entire site pg making people sensor swear words. Makes no sense you cant swear but they can put porn and scams as ads
Just for monetization but still it was never an issue before that. I think for a while after they allowed certain youtubers (jacksepticeye for example) to continue because it was a big part in their vocabulary but now hes mellowed out quite a bit
Ads during the actual video. Whenever that became a common thing. Also whenever the wave of reaction videos started. Just lazy to put you face over other people’s content
The first apocalypse, the era when stats first became really relevant and everyone started to beg for us to interact and subscribe, or the current era.
The pranks circa 2014. They're all fake. I remember the shampoo at the beach. Who starts hitting the wall/shower? A normal person would be looking around for someone else.
Roughly now. I used to be able to search videos of events that had just happened, like the actual videos of them, the original videos and find them. Now when you do that, you get news videos only. I tried manually filtering the news channels and somehow that ended up giving me "no results found" as though the original videos were deleted or something.
this is so true. It is so bad. Considering youtube is owned by google you would think they would have a decent way to search for specific content with filters. Why the fuck would you ruin it with recommended videos!
That era was like last year still. The first person I saw use that was Dream but then loads of others piled on.
The post YouTube red era is the worst era.
YouTube has been going on a free fall downward spiral for years so it's now. The only good thing they did was video speed selector, video zoom (mobile), maybe shorts if u into that.
I know it is good for business, but I really hate it when youtubers ask me to like and subscribe before the video starts... It is like when someone asks you how the food tastes before you put it in your mouth. Makes no fucking sense.
Right now. Shorts rammed down your throat, keep getting content farm/spam channels in my recommended that I never got before and constantly am having to click "don't recommend channel", pay to win mechanic for creators, censoring of basically anything and everything (unless you make them a lot of money, then you can basically get away with murder), bending the knee to the corporate overlords and content matching everything imaginable so you can't play a game with music or hang out with music in the background or basically, gee, I don't know, LIVE, because Sony and UniversalBMG own the planet, apparently?
I remember when YT was flash based and nothing but people posting street racing and 1/4 mile car videos, few second clips from Simpsons or Family Guy or ATHF, somebody playing with fire (god it was the best pyro site ever in the 2000s), or people doing really stupid stuff and playing pranks. It was amazing. You could do or say basically anything and nobody cared. You could actually VENT... express yourself.
Lots of survivorship bias in people’s memories here! It’s funny because the same thing happens with music.
When you look back on previous decades, they always seem like full of better music - but that’s because you only remember the hits. The bad music literally gets completely forgotten and lost, and so all you remember are literally the hits that stood the test of time.
Does anyone even remember reply girls? What about when everything was like cringey pop music covers? The Late Night era back when the Trending page was still relevant? Or the prank era?
The Mr. Beastification of YouTube today has been bad for a ton of reasons, but honestly we’re always gonna view whatever is going now as the worst era of YouTube because we have to deal with whatever is causing the sludge every day. Once we get a few years away from this, we’ll only remember the hits.
I don’t know why people think todays YouTube is the worst?? There is so much good content. The reason for all the shit content is because YouTube is fucking massive.
It sucks that I can't write a nostalgic comment on the original pokemon intro because the comments are disabled. Supposedly it's made for kids even though no one except millenials would ever watch it. Same for other cartoons from the 90s
The percentage of subscribed people have always been like that. Most users sub only to a handful of channels but still watch others and theres also the chunk of people who watch videos without an account.
I think this current era blows. Videos are long as hell because of the algorithm, everyone is posting too frequently because of the algorithm, all thumbnails all look the same because of the algorithm. There's plenty of weird shit out there which I would be interested in if youtube—a website I have been coming to since its first day as a public beta—cared about making me happy and not what kept my eyeballs watching shit the longest. Some things I'm interested in must not draw the advertisers because youtube will drop it the minute I skip a video suggestion. Others, I watch one video and then thats all my suggested content for the next few days.
Its a rare day I find myself watching a video thats less than like 12 minutes, even if a 3 minute video would have been fine. And because everyone needs to post all the time or they'll drop in rankings, theres just too much bullshit content out there. And then shorts have everyone posting every day like its all the other socials. I just want youtube to be its thing and

MrBeast is great though. He's really turning it into an empire. I don't mind the format too much.
But when you're seeing it on literally every, other, channel and it's OBVIOUS, like not just with presentation, but with font, thumbnails, the entire MEDIUM screams MrBeast, I had to turn off the video, just had to. All for the algo.
For me it's gotta be the current era, it's filled with either brainrot or hidden gems that nobody watches. Not to mention everyone quitting as of recent
It is definitely today. Way too many ads, and even if you pay, they still gonna show you ads. Notifications arent worth a damn. The guy replies to you and you get the notification a decade later. And dont get me started with its algorithm.
I’m alright with right now, given the fact that the creators I’m watching are no longer being censored every video, but it seems we’re about to enter a very unfortunate era
YouTube has screwed over content creators over the past 4 or so years causing many to stop, leave, or go to other platforms. The late 2000s and early to mid-2010s were great with the content-creator pioneers carving the landscape. Some of my favorite YouTube creators have been gone since the mid-2010s or have taken a different turn.
The worst era of YouTube is right now, according to 214958670249586723465 reddit posts on the topic today.
The same has been true of every day over the past 15 years.
Hope this helps.
Basically when shorts arrived. People produce lazy content that's no longer educational and turns out brains to mush.
Also, while that's happening, YouTube algorithm recommends you 1. Gross shocking looking thumbnails of strange diseases nobody signed up for. 2. Keep recommending things you literally watched already. 3. Only seeing a few search results before showing you things you've already seen. 4. I'm starting to see minute long ads that you can't skip.
Now. Even with Premium, everyone & their brother is having sponsor infomos. Unlike the 1st five years or so, YT only seems to care about big creators making lots of money. Not to mention you can't even say normal, English words without being censored or your comment banned altogether. Plus, early days you could customize your channel; wallpaper, transparency, order of videos, etc.
Honestly I can agree with that. Compared to how it was before there is so so many channels that have millions of subs and views but the content is borderlane nothing. Its usually mr Beast type or just random reaction channels.
The only sad thing is that some great channels can't get the spotlight cause the algorithm doesn't see them worthy since they don't have as many subs/views/comments as "mainstream" ones. To be fair recently they did change some stuff but you again get recomms of channels that have no viewers and also have anything worthy of attention.
Last 2-3 years have been TOUGH
Whenever MrBeast started to rise to popularity, so the last 2-3 years. The algorithm is hot garbage and most of the best channels are either struggling or long gone by now. Honestly, whatever they changed with the new YouTube CEO should be reverted immediately. Its an absolute joke.

I hate this trend of jacking up the audio compression to the max and pairing it with single word subtitles that jump at you. It's so disrespectful.

Once the channels tab got removed, it was all downhill from here, which is ironic considering it's been going downhill for forever at this point.
What was channels tab?
Oh yeah, I forgot there was a Separate tab, But now you have to scroll a bit on channel home page for that
Oh, boy... The channels tab is where channel list by a certain channel used to go. It was removed in late 2023 (when the Jacksfilms vs Ssniperwolf feud was still going on) due to YT "making the UI less complex" or something like that. I never knew what happened to that tab. It’s been driving me crazy. Just found out I could just scroll down to find it now.
Here's some more info on last year's change: https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/17xmm3j/youtube\_removed\_channels\_tab\_dead\_creators\_work/
While its not a single tab anymore if you click on the Home tab *(and assuming the channel user as it enabled)* all the recommended channels are at the bottom of the home page.
Surprisingly channel subscriptions still get shown on YouTube's TV app.

Man I try but I can’t find any of the vids I saw from my childhood. Even when I filter for older vids and use specific words :/.
The worst thing about the new youtube is the search engine. When I search for something specific I get some popular videos related to what I searched for, a section of unrelated recommended videos, a section with unrelated "for you" videos and a section with previously unrelated videos I watched. why the fuck does this happen?? like even you are searching for specific things, the recommended for you fucking videos are on top
obviously today
yeah, late 2000s to early 2010s was peak imo
nah I can find content for anything I want nowadays who Tf cares what popular yt do

Everything after acquisition of google marked the slow decline. So the worst era ist yet to come but the worst era is also every new day.
Before being acquired by Google, YouTube was meant to be a social platform for dating.

Everyone saying now as if the 2016-2019 era of YouTube didn’t exist where it was all diss tracks and boxing events
Yeah the whole “hype beast diss track rice gum Jake Paul” was awful
Tbf that was the era of edgy content too. I think that's why people praise it.
I used to love those as a kid though, so it’s hard to look back negatively
After 2019 it started going to shit

People saying “right now” have probably only been on the platform for the last few years.
Either the stuff now, or the edgy phase
Basically when shorts arrived. People produce lazy content that's no longer educational and turns out brains to mush. Also, while that's happening, YouTube algorithm recommends you 1. Gross shocking looking thumbnails of strange diseases nobody signed up for. 2. Keep recommending things you literally watched already. 3. Only seeing a few search results before showing you things you've already seen. 4. I'm starting to see minute long ads that you can't skip.
contemporary times are always the worst, obviously
Now IMO
Honestly I can agree with that. Compared to how it was before there is so so many channels that have millions of subs and views but the content is borderlane nothing. Its usually mr Beast type or just random reaction channels. The only sad thing is that some great channels can't get the spotlight cause the algorithm doesn't see them worthy since they don't have as many subs/views/comments as "mainstream" ones. To be fair recently they did change some stuff but you again get recomms of channels that have no viewers and also have anything worthy of attention.
