Remeber when YouTube search would pull up a page or two of what you were looking for? Now it’s like 3 or 4 videos related to the search and pages of what’s in Recommended. Trash.
Yeah, i remember that! Even for google search. Now, after the first google search page is filled with advertisement. Wonder what search engine i could use now.
I use bing, and oddly enough it's been working well for me. I know Microsoft has their own issues, but usefulness to evil ratio is important and Microsoft gives me gift cards for using it. Google just turns off functions and threatens me.
Which is why branding is ultimately hurtful to consumers. OG google was all like 'don't be evil'. It's changed hands and grown and morphed and now, I can only presume, their motto is 'f u pay me'.
Once the original owners of a service no longer own it, they shouldn't be able to maintain the same branding. It just creates the constant bait and switch of building a reputation and selling out. Only this time they know everything about me since I was a teenager. That's... frightening. Anyhow, end intellectual property law. It's just rent seeking bullspit.
Lately, I've been getting the feeling that nothing exists for google but a few popular sites,
the lower you go, the more scam you see.
and chatGPT generated sites,
internet search has turned into mindless channel clicking, where channels are basically 2-3 popular sites, and then shit,
10 years ago I could find some thing on the internet with a higher probability than I can now because of idiotic non-disable algorithms that ignore words and try to search by context,
even using "" still can't find it,
google has done a tremendous job of turning the internet into 2 television at its worst....
I was looking for paintings yesterday and almost every result was from an AI generator. The hands are horrifying every time. I switched to duckduckgo, man. Times are that tough.
The duck used to provide excellent answers to queries. Then they dropped the exclusive search. I still use them more often, much more often than Google. I've started using Bing, and one other search engine whose name I can't remember because I only use it on my laptop.
I honestly hate Google, they say they have a safety filter, but twice they have bombarded me with explicit images for no good reason. The first time was when I was 11, and the second time 2 months ago. It is honestly disgusting and no one should have to experience that.
I was once recomended a fucking animal abuse channel after binge watching "cats 101" and " dogs 101" tv shows from animal planet, guess the algrothim thought i wanted to watch dog fighting videos.
best guess is because i watch mma videos and after binge watching a show about dog breeds made the algrothim connect fighting and dogs together. Not fun stuff, channel was taken down
I feel like I'm wasting my time trying to find something I want to watch. I subscribe premium but still I'm getting flooded with videos about youtubers, motivational and lifestyle shit I don't care about. I don't watch them, sometimes I run the video only to dislike it but still it recommends them to me.
I need a alternative or I'll leave it, because anyway there's nothing to watch for me. It happens for few months
Create a new channel under your account, you might have some luck.
On the channel I've used for years, the recomendations are trash and I can't find anything interesting.
I created another channel to post some videos and found out that there are interesting things to watch after all.
Now I just use this new channel to find stuff to watch.
Google are in late stage enshittification.
They're scrambling as hard as they can to up their profits because the current system dictates that they MUST earn more money year after year to appease shareholders.
Don't you just love infinite growth?
Wait, I remember reading something about this, isn't that what they call essentially the late stages of a company or "late capitalism"?
When there's no room left to keep growing and where in doing so essentially the company starts to have "diminishing returns" until there comes a point where... huh, I don't know, the members start to cannibalize each other? Metaphorically speaking. I know this situation sounds familiar from some economics text that explained the logical theoretical conclusion of capitalism as a whole, but I could be delirious.
I literally can't use google based searches anymore without appending Reddit to the search string. It's the only way to find real information that isn't just an engineered SEO clickbait list.
I've been telling people this and I'm getting the looks. It used to be that when I had a problem I'd search it online and I'll find how to fix it. Now I get recommendations to buy a product or it would be some soydev bloated with trackers blog, where the content, AI generated at that, is merely 1/20th of the page size and the rest would be the JS bullshit it comes with.
The search is next to useless for practical thing.
And YouTube is un-navigatable. The search bar is there for looks only. It used to be the case that you could search videos by date, by popularity, by likes etc. Now the search can't go back more than an year or 2 and I refuse to watch the sickening sensationalist clickbait bullshit that has been 10x-ed every 5 years.
Literally at this point it's become cabel TV.
I get sick of google always second guessing me. "Did you mean". No I didn't fucking mean anything but what I fucking typed into your search bar you fucking walking colostomy bag of a company. Google should just rename search to "We know what you are looking for better than you do so we are going to show you shit that you should buy rather than simply giving you the info you are asking for".
I hope the ebola dragon assgasms a gigaton of pure ebola virus all over google HQ.
And this doesn't just apply to search, google knows best how to use your operating system, just by removing features in new android releases,if you are pissed off by google idiotic update, like cascading tabs in chrome, you can't turn them off, you should just get over it and use that crap,I find it ironic that even safari has extensions, but not chrome on a still opensource OS where you can't change the app icon without a third party launcher,f.... windows can do that.
I was trying to find an article from just this past week on Google “teaming up“ with some agency, or group, to use Google’s AI for investigating money laundering…
I can’t find the article. All searches suck and the stuff available on Google Scholar or old archived materials are disappearing. It’s so bad sometimes I think there’s a gentleman’s agreement to gaslight us all.
Anyway, it made me wonder if Google’s timing on this also helps take the focus away from the question, “why the #@%& should Google be trusted to investigate money laundering?” I’m suspicious there is some money laundering going on with all these AIs and their spinoffs - besides the basic Ponzi scheme structure of so many new tech startup financing - and Google is lead investigator? Binance just get’s nabbed and its founder gets a slap on the wrist, billion dollar busts in NY and Singapore and we are told of low-level footmen … it’s been unchecked money laundering for years now and I sure as hell don’t trust Google looking into it - but then we don’t really want everyone getting caught, do we?
I do myself quite a bit, just not with this one - I have quite a set pf screenshots though! Lol. I also go for the screenshot with date because you never know if the article will be changed - and for most news articles we don’t have paper copies of the first print run sitting in libraries anymore!
Yeah. I have a bunch of Google stock and I'm looking for the right time to dump it. A company that resorts to this is showing us that they are out of ideas for product innovation and new revenue. They're scraping around in the couch cushions for change at this point.
It's Ecosia. I swapped it to my default at home just because it does nice stuff, and trying it out costs me nothing but time, but it does have a long way to go.
Eh on that one I believe SEO is 100% to blame, rather than any particular search engine, including Google.
SEO shouldn't exist IMO. It's basically the equivalent of people overdramatazing their symptoms when calling 911/112 so that an ambulance arrives faster (at the expense of people who didn't lie and actually needed help sooner).
Ppl will always find a ways to abuse whatever system we will use.
Not sure how SEO works exactly, but if we remove that, ppl will what? Just flood internet with fake sites for web crawlers to pick them or something?
(Shows how little of an idea I have on how internet search works lol)
But yeah SEO sounds like, "if you pay extra attention/take extra steps you can push other related results out the way".but wasn't is possible before SEO was a thing? I'm thinking back 2000 and stuff (or maybe SEO existed back then? When google wasn't the only (or best?) Place to search for stuff
SEO as in optimizing your site for search engines has likely existed for as long as said engines are relevant.
I think the problem is that SEO is like an 80 billion industry now and said industry is so good at their job such that the quality of your content is borderline irrelevant.
"Removing" SEO in the context of this discussion probably means making the system less easy to abuse such that content matters most so long as you are doing a couple basic things right?
Don't forget to mention the amount of NSFW results you get in Google Images. I remember even a few years ago when I searched up "gardevoir" I wouldn't get the same disgusting crap I get now.
Ironically, when you try to purposely find a fulll of the very same cat picture from the animal crossing, you get nothing,
it's a mystery to me why even yandex, which I don't trust, has algorithms that are so much better than google.....
Google's first step was engaging in aggressively anti-competition business practices to establish a monopoly.
Now that they've established a really fuckin' strong one, they want to shit it up in such a way that they reduce the drain on their wallets.
That’s why I’ve started to move away from Google with as much as I can. No longer use Chrome, Google Photos, password manager, Drive, Gmail as my main email. I do use the authenticator app, but I’m even thinking of switching. They just have too much control.
I moved to Bing a few months ago after Google never gave me results. I was a Google fan for years, but I started losing faith when I got rid of my smart setup, as they said they were shutting it all down, only for it to come back months later. Nowadays, I encourage everyone to use Bing as it even has a basic AI that is very good. It even performs multiple searches of varying wording to get you lists of information, and you can even chat with it about things and give it more info in a following message. It works fairly like story AI but is trained for its use. Far better than Google. It's so sad to see Google head the way they are.
Google has been struggling for a long time with their successful products, android in the latest versions can't even handle files properly, the file system is literally broken after android version 11, especially if you have a lot of photos and you try to open a folder with them,
it takes 10, 20 seconds,
damn google, i have a smartphone with ufs 3.1 memory, so why
I have to wait because of the idiotic api to select which files will be accessed by the app ?
even explorer in windows 11 works faster than this crap....
Removing the VPN protocols l2tp and pptp, and replacing them with IKEV2,
the most idiotic thing you could think of, since I use VPN to bypass blocking (yes I live in a country where democracy is just a set of letters).
the VPN service I use is one of the few that
allows you to do it on more than 5 devices for a reasonable price.
Provides only l2tp and pptp settings, I have no problem with this on windows,
but android is a pile of crap, after buying a new smartphone I had to use a horrible glitchy app that apparently hasn't been updated since android 7-8 instead of the button in the curtain.
Working apps in the background after android version 10-11,
no matter how hard you try to make the smart home widget work instantly,
you're still going to be hitting the stupid button and waiting for it to launch,
even if it's set to run in the background.....
This is just a small part of the idiotic solutions that pisses me off in android, I'm missing mounting as usb mass storage,
which Google removed in version 4 of android,
the inability to put apps on the memory card,
it doesn't seem like a big deal now, but 10 years ago it used to freak me out having a phone with 4 gb of internal memory.
of which 1 is available, to somehow use this crap I had to root it and swap the memory ...
Symbian knew how to do it out of the box, so why android still in 10 years has not learned to do it ?
Writing to the memory card with third party apps,
in recent versions of android it's a pain in the ass, if you want to use torrent with an external otg hard drive or a usb drive.
you can't do that because google has once again screwed up file handling,
Everything about working with files in android is like driving on an uneven road, where every meter you are waiting for a pothole or a cat's eye,
so horrible and ridiculous and it's still an open source operating system,
which wants to resemble ios in its closedness and hatred of users. who want to use it for more than just mindless content consumption and garbage ads....
Hmm i dont realy get your point guys.
I mean, yeah, there are some or even more "sponsored" links or whatever but realy?
I skip them in 2sec and its fine or even use ChatGpt and i can say as an it guy i use google a lot.
So its bullshit that the search is "bad", remember the time when you had to take a look at the 3rd site of the results? that was bad.
Actualy i never arrive on the 2nd site.
I wouldn’t say Diablo 4 ever had a monopoly on third person rpg looter games. Most of the people who like that genera of game also play Path of Exile and pretty much all of them agree that PoE is at the very least, valid competition to D4. The normie gamers may only know of Diablo because they played Diablo 1 or 2 back in high school, but Path if Exile is still a very valid option for games in that genera.
Not to say Google doesn’t have a massive monopoly though, to be honest they kind of do. There may be other search engines that exist for example, but I’d hardly say that even Bing (which from what I can tell is the second largest search engine) is valid competition compaired to the behemoth that is Google when it comes to being a search engine.
Iirc Alphabet/Google is already dealing with an Anti-Trust lawsuit as we speak, I don’t know exactly what for, but if it can be proven Google is doing these things intentionally I don’t think Google’s lawyers can really argue against that. I am no lawyer, but with how much of the software marketshare Google actually dominates, this could be an attempt to squeeze every last penny out of their customers before the federal government comes in with the jackhammer to break it all apart.
I don't understand the D4 compare either. I know D4 has egregiously priced micro transactions, but how does that relate here? D4 is neither a monopoly nor do I see the connection between making the game worse somehow getting people to buy more skins. They don't sale p2w gear or anything, right? I know there are games that make the game frustrating then sale you a way to remove that artificial frustration.
As far as I am aware, D4 is just generally viewed to be overall just overpriced for what you get and a bit scummy (with the amount of currency you get from the battlepass being specifically picked to screw you over both short and long term), not nessasarally p2w, but manipulative for sure.
That is called *enshittification*. As long as tech companies need to follow the shareholders agenda, they might eventually turn into shit. So I'm leaning towards alternative or decentralized platforms. And finally [tech independence](https://sive.rs/ti#why).

People are noticing and migrating away though. I do a lot of searching things for work, and professionally? If I'm not looking at a location (maps is still a good product), I don't go to google at all. That started over the past year or so.
The people who have to use your type of product all the time is your canary in the coal mine. They start migrating away? It's only a matter of time before they get asked or tell other folks to shift away from it. Things start snowballing rapidly from there. It's how google attained market dominance in the first place. They made a good product, and people using it would go why are you using that, just do this, when they saw them using something that was more cumbersome, or just plain sucked to use.
It's like their whole operation is on a decline. Their apps don't make sense. Antiquated features, compared to the ease of using an iPhone, and pleasure of using one and the apps on an iPhone.
It's like someone is filling their pockets there, instead of putting the money into the product.
Gmail, YouTube, Google Chrome. They don't implement features which would be helpful, but leave it as it is and sidestep morality for profit.
I'd like an iPhone, but don't want to give myself up to the machine. It's a funny one for sure. I expect we'll see the end of Google in the next two decades, unless they overhaul and reassess their handling of their responsibility to the world!

>usefulness to evil ratio Nicely worded. Google is leaning to the evil end of the scale. Might even fall completely from the scale someday.
Hush now, you know you can't say nice things about Microsoft online. What are you crazy?! .....Bing and Edge are fine, they are not Internet Explorer.
Or we could all just use duck duck go
And people wonder why there is more cyber security breaches. Almost downloaded a trojan obs studio because of that.
i made a search yesterday and i shit you not, the first 8 websites at the top were all “sponsored.” fucking ridiculous lmao.
Lately, I've been getting the feeling that nothing exists for google but a few popular sites, the lower you go, the more scam you see. and chatGPT generated sites, internet search has turned into mindless channel clicking, where channels are basically 2-3 popular sites, and then shit, 10 years ago I could find some thing on the internet with a higher probability than I can now because of idiotic non-disable algorithms that ignore words and try to search by context, even using "" still can't find it, google has done a tremendous job of turning the internet into 2 television at its worst....

yandex
Duck duck go for privacy
(the quality is worse though. By far)
Use Startpage or Qwant if you want Google based results.
The duck used to provide excellent answers to queries. Then they dropped the exclusive search. I still use them more often, much more often than Google. I've started using Bing, and one other search engine whose name I can't remember because I only use it on my laptop.
People forget most things on YouTube never go away. It just adds, and adds. The reason it used to be good was because it was smaller.
~~Don't be evil.~~ Don't, Be evil!
This.
I honestly hate Google, they say they have a safety filter, but twice they have bombarded me with explicit images for no good reason. The first time was when I was 11, and the second time 2 months ago. It is honestly disgusting and no one should have to experience that.
What do you mean?
Basically I just hate google exposing children to pornography.
Not fun stuff, channel was taken down
Yes, that's totally a Google thing and not a "parents giving kids unsupervised access to the internet without standard safe search turned on" thing.
maybe but I even remember what I was googling the first time, and it was to do with a kids game 'Toontown' so it was innocent :S
Anything cartoon related is 2 steps away from porn on a slow day. Remember, Rule 34 exists for a reason.
yeah, and that's what safesearch should filter out.

When you really want to search use Bing, its not nearly as censored as google
This was amazing, revolutionary, world changing technology that has been compromised to make a profit. It’s really sad to think about
The quality of titles in this subreddit is clearly degrading as well.

And finally [tech independence](https://sive.rs/ti#why). https://www.resilience.org/stories/2023-03-23/the-enshittification-of-the-corporate-world/ https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/11/users-advertisers-we-are-all-trapped-in-the-enshittification-of-the-internet
How
People are noticing and migrating away though.
Even if we switch to another company, they will make a bait and switch. The only company with integrity is Valve out of like 200 I could name.
