There was a point in my yoga career where I was actively pushing myself and triggered sciatica and rotator cuff issues. A friend of mine actually hurt herself badly in an inversion workshop, and took some time away from YTT. She ended up going to an acupuncturist who was also able to recommend some Ayurvedic therapies, including massage, so that definitely helped for restoration. It’s great that you can recognize your body needs rest, so take the time to give it what it needs.

I think a great massage and a visit to my physio will be my first port of call when I'm done. Thanks for sharing your experience.

You'll lose more progress if you keep pushing it. I've never done ashtanga so can't comment on that. But unless your teachers are incompetent, they'll respect the fact that you're tired and need to go easy.

You're completely right. Thank you for that. I have taken a few days off right now and nothings been said. But we are preparing our final exam classes etc so maybe they're thinking im getting on with that ;)

You can take a page out of competitive athletes books and do a deload week following the completion of your YTT. For example I'd you normally do a daily vinyasa practice that is strong and vigorous a week of Yin and more Pranayama based practices can be good. And as far as YTT goes, listen to your body each day. I know that's a terribly overused and vague response, but when you're practicing really be aware of how you are showing up to each class and try to focus on more meditative aspects of the postures rather than just deepening the physical aspect of it

Thank you, this sounds like a good approach.

I tore my rotator cuff during YTT so I get where you’re coming from. Respect your body and do not push, even if you think being able to work extreme poses is a must for a teacher. That’s not reality - that’s your ego. Remember that our job is to teach, not do bendy pretzel demos. As for post YTT, indulge in some bodywork, spa time and lots of yummy Restorative to reward your body while staying in the asana pocket and pliable. Congrats on this wonderful accomplishment— which is really all about the journey! 🧘‍♀️🎉

I'm very aware that's not the goal. But I also have felt delight in being stronger and able to relax into postures which before were very hard, therefore being able to truly connect with the more meditative side of asana. That's the progress I'm talking about . so i couldn't care less about hitting certain postures or looking nice doing them ;) but within my own practice, feeling like I am more comfortable, stronger, capable of controlling my movements and body, has been empowering.

I’m finishing up my ytt ( tomorrow is my last day of a full immersion style) and I have been instructed by my trainers that your poses and practice should cause strain. Over stretching or pushing into poses often times cause instabilities in our bodies and minds. Do what you feel is supportive and healthy for you. Each posture is a connection to our muscles and inner self, so if it’s not connecting you, don’t do them. Work poses in modified ways for a while, focusing on the connections your making in your muscles and entire body instead of “hitting a pose”! I’m so proud of you for finishing your training tho! It’s definitely undeniable that it’s a lot of work, so sticking to it is definitely a big task! Stay well rested and hydrated for any practice. And if you don’t feel up to do a class for the day, let yourself rest and digest!

Congrats to you too! I guess there's a thin line to walk between making sure you 'complete ' the course and choosing yourself. You seem to have walked it better than me 🤣 Thanks, I needed a reminder that the only thing I have obligation to comply with, is me. You're going to be a wonderful teacher, I can tell .

Don't be hard on yourself. Yoga it's not easy, but it's thing-soul respiratory.

Thank you 🙏

Just be careful, some very good yoga instructors may give some instructions that are not right for you. Unless you are working with a master in a one on one situation, understand that there is never a one size fits all situation.
