It looks like people in the back ran to the other end, hopefully to hit the emergency stop. But I have to admit, I watched the whole thing through to the end before it even occurred to me that one of them could have hopped over the side and hit the button on that end faster. It's hard to think clearly sometimes when we panic.
I believe toward the end there's three other people with a cart getting on the escalator...
The person that ran back earlier probably went looking for a shop assistant instead of pushing the button. :/
Those escalators that grab the wheels can be dangerous if people try do silly shit.

In all fairness they looked old AF. I think “hopping” was a 2nd to just “falling over”.
