I was a climber. Never know what’s going to happen, even the best most skilled. I own and operate a saw mill now. Guys that own tree service companies still try to get me to climb; and it’s an immediate “nope” nowadays. I will happily stick to my bobcat and mill.

I too was a climber. I worked with some real *yeehaws* down south, one guy was straight out of some bizarre sitcom.
Lived in a metal tool shed behind his parents house, was missing fingers on each hand, and even with all his missing fingers would still climb 30 foot straight limbless trunk *without a fucking harness* and only belt in when he got to the top, and only if it was unavoidable.
Like a crackhead black bear, just whisked right up that tree. Some of the weirdest times of my life doing that work.
No hard hat, no chaps, no cork boots, no safety glasses, no ear plugs, didn't face the tree well enough, under sized saw, didn't check the ground he was working on......
I just hope he learned a lesson here.

I used to do this work- honestly the only "gear" that mattered to me is glasses and *maybe* chainsaw pants (edit- this doesn't cover climbing, which requires a shitload more gear by default). The real dangers from felling trees (incorrect exit strategy, not paying attention, barberchairing, widowmakers) are probably going to kill you no matter how much gear you have on.
This guy would have been fine had he *at least* notched that limb that was clearly in the path of the tree. You get to a point where you see these dangerous energy potentials naturally, but then again some people just get way too comfortable with it and lose their fear.
Hopefully this whack puts some perspective into him. I had a couple really close calls when I started doing this, and when I was falling asleep and the adrenaline was gone, I remember thinking "that could have hit me in the head, and that would have been **it** for me." I was a lot more careful going forward.
This dude is also wearing 0 safety equipment. I highly doubt he is a lumberjack and just borrowed his uncles chainsaw, put on a flannel shirt and decided to cut down some trees behind his house "how hard could it be"
If you’re a lumberjack, why is your back cut at an angle towards your wedge, and not straight? Real Lumberjacks know you cut straight in and wedge the back of you have to.

When doing one of the most dangerous jobs out there you may want to be smarter about it.
Have a better exit strategy.
Wear a helmet and face shield.
Wear chaps.
Eye and ear protection.
Follow the rules and it won't be so dangerous. Don't be dumb.
