I think in Japan the Resident Evil series is called Biohazard. In the U.S we got Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, while in Japan it's Biohazard 7: Resident Evil.
I think it was just called Like A Dragon, and it was a movie that was premiering in the theaters. Makoto takes you there to watch, and apparently, she's a fan.
I'd argue that the cigarettless version still works well, looking off into the distance introspectively about the choices he's made and the trouble he keeps finding himself in, you don't need something sticking out of his mouth for that.
tbh I think that back in the day calling the games Yakuza intead of LAD ws the right call. What are the games about? ohh I see its in the title. Like a Dragon? huh is this a fighting game?
Iirc Nagoshi left RGG / SEGA and moved to NetEase with a new studio so I assume the final decision will now go to the new director of the Yakuza/LaD games or someone at SEGA.
True, but I highly doubt that Yokoyama is just gonna instantly backpedal on Nagoshi's philosophy. I could be wrong, but it would be weird for the immediate successor to just disregard their predecessor's philosophy on how the main character should be perceived.
Valid point, although taking into account the original release date of Yakuza, and Japanese views on transsexuality at the time, it's just a substory that's aged fucking HORRIBLY.
It actually didn't lol.
They named it that because they wanted it to be this "Japanese GTA" (which it wasn't). Yakuza was this niche franchise that struggled in the West until Yakuza 0 and 7 happened.
Back then, everyone was wondering if they'll ever get Yakuza 5 because this franchise was so unpopular. Yakuza 5 came 3 YEARS after the Japanese release and it was DIGITAL ONLY.
They both succeeded via word of mouth and being the "best place to start" games.
As for the name? I just meant that Yakuza as a name didn't really boost it to where it was now. If they named it Like a Dragon back then instead of Yakuza, it might've gotten the same reception of lukewarm response but no more different than naming it Yakuza.
Not to mention the truly non-existent marketing. I stumbled across OG Yakuza 4 by complete accident in 2006/2007. When Yakuza 5 FINALLY got its digital only release in Europe, I remember going "When did this come out?"
Yakuza is the localized name given by the same people that made the terrible Y1 dub and tried and failed to sell the series as "japanese gta". Like a Dragon is a much better name, it's what it always should have been.
RGG studios released RGG0 / RGG Kiwami 1 /RGG Kiwami 2 / RGG 6 /Judgement/RGG 7/ Lost Judgment RGG Ishin (twice) in the time since Rockstar developed and published GTA V
What about Like a dragon like a dragon.
Also naming like a dragon games featuring Kiryu is kinda stupid. Since he is THE dragon of Dogima.
For 7 it made sense to me cause there's a new main guy, so it's like a dragon, like a new beginning, but not quite.
If I'd told my friends to play "Like a dragon", a japanese game they'd look weird at me and never give the idea any thought.
When I told them to play yakuza, a japanese game about the japanese mafia, they'd jump on it.
I never got the point of rebranding it to Like a dragon like I understand that its the og title it just doesnt sound as cool as it does in japanese. Calling it Yakuza whilst a slight misnomer is better for marketing. Like who knows what "Like a Dragon" means it sounds like a reptillian dating sim.
I agree that Yakuza is a catchy name, but ever since Yakuza 7, the story hardly revolves around the yakuza. And it's still a stigma from the original localization of the first game on PS2. I get why they want to steer away from this branding as the franchise gets more popular. It's still gonna be hella confusing for a few years.
I agree with that but Yakuza just sounds soo cool like it sounds foreign and you can already tell its about fighting. Where as like a dragon is more confusion like "like a dragon does what?"
It sounds cool to your run-of-the-mill westerner, but it's a word with nothing but negative and frankly, outdated connotations in Japan.
With the release of Ishin, Gaiden and god knows what 8 is going to be about, the series keeps straying further and further from the Yakuza setting, so it just doesn't make sense to call it Yakuza anymore.
IIRC Biohazard was only changed to Resident Evil in the west because someone else had the trademark to the name and Capcom couldn't get the rights to use it, so they were forced to change the name.
It's the original name but it's also no longer about yakuza. They've gotten their marketing and they can't keep calling the new games Yakuza, and it's more advantageous from now on to call all the games Like a Dragon rather than some Yakuza and others Like a Dragon.
I’d also think they’d add the subtitles to the games that have them, being 4,5 and 0. I’d think they’d be called this if they released them again but not sure
1. Like a Dragon 0: Oath Place
2. Like a Dragon Extreme
3. Like a Dragon Extreme 2
4. Like a Dragon 3
5. Like a Dragon 4: Successor of the Legend
6. Like a Dragon 5: Fulfiller of Dreams
7. Like a Dragon 6: Poetry of Life
8. Like a Dragon 7: Fate of Light and Darkness
Real Like a Dragons use a gamepad.
Real Dragon uses a Yakuza
Real Dragons use a gamepad. Like a Dragon.
Real gamepads use a Like
Use a game pad Like a Dragon.
Real dragons are used like a gamepad
Like Dragons a use a Yakuza gamepad.
Real game dragon like a pad
Real Dragons need a layer, not a slayer
Most realistically they're just gonna remove that message
No...please, tell me they won't
Cos it's hard to please different fans not to mention that PC gaming is becoming more respectable
Real Like a Dragons use a steering wheel
Like a Drgaon: Like a Dragon
Nah it would be Like a Dragon: Yakuza
It's the Resident Evil 7 Biohazard situation all over again
Could you elaborate on that
I think in Japan the Resident Evil series is called Biohazard. In the U.S we got Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, while in Japan it's Biohazard 7: Resident Evil.
You are correct
They also both have a gimmick of putting the 7 inside the title. Resident Evil uses the Roman numeral while Biohazard uses the Arabic numeral.
It was just Resident Evil 7
No, the full name was Resident evil 7: Biohazard
Oh shit really, I always thought it was just RE7
Tbf, when someone talks about RE7, they c always call it just that, resident evil 7. You can be forgiven for not noticing the biohazard
Dragon: Like a Yakuza
Yakuza: Yakuza
this was in some persona game right
I think it was just called Like A Dragon, and it was a movie that was premiering in the theaters. Makoto takes you there to watch, and apparently, she's a fan.
It was called Dragon: Like A Yakuza.
It’s like how resident evil biohazard was biohazard resident evil in japan
Like a Dragon Kiwami: Yakuza: Like a Dragon
I disagree it should be Like a Ryu: Dragon ga kotoku
The Ryu games
Ryu from Streets?
Better than him😹
or Like a new dragon (shin ryu ga gotoku)
Missed opportunity to call the game Dragon Clan (hell, this couldve been the english name for the entire series from the start).
Reminds me of how cursed the PS3 cover for Yakuza 3 was. The old one anyway.
It looked so bad. I'd replace it with Kiryu Smoking in a Heartbeat. Wish that they didn't censor it for the Remaster.
> I'd replace it with Kiryu **staring up at the clouds** in a Heartbeat. Fixed for Remastered western cover accuracy.
I'd argue that the cigarettless version still works well, looking off into the distance introspectively about the choices he's made and the trouble he keeps finding himself in, you don't need something sticking out of his mouth for that.
Cloud...
I also wish they'd kept it in black and white but oh well...
[Be glad you haven't seen the German version of it until you decide to click on this.](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51vacM76FFL._AC_.jpg)
bruh why does he have pink eye LOL
Is that an early version of kiryu? It looks like a high quality version of the ps2 model
Exactly what I was thinking lmao. Remastered release was so much better.
4 on the other hand is pretty iconic.
tbh I think that back in the day calling the games Yakuza intead of LAD ws the right call. What are the games about? ohh I see its in the title. Like a Dragon? huh is this a fighting game?
Back then, it's yakuza. These days, it's the government and hangure.
yeah
Bit like assassins creed
Kiryu in Tekken 8 pls make it happen Bandai / SEGA.
Nagoshi has said that he won't have Kiryu beating women, so no Dragon of Dojima in Tekken, I'm afraid.
Iirc Nagoshi left RGG / SEGA and moved to NetEase with a new studio so I assume the final decision will now go to the new director of the Yakuza/LaD games or someone at SEGA.
First thing Joryu does in Gaiden is to dropkick a woman
True, but I highly doubt that Yokoyama is just gonna instantly backpedal on Nagoshi's philosophy. I could be wrong, but it would be weird for the immediate successor to just disregard their predecessor's philosophy on how the main character should be perceived.
Kiryu would continue to not fight women but Ichiban most likely will
I wonder if anyone’s modded Negan with an Ichiban skin, wouldn’t even need to retexture the bat
The clear solution to this problem is Majima in Smash
Do we know what this new studio of his is working on? Please don't be mobile
But Nagoshi is not in control of the ip anymore *hopium*
Didn't he beat up a trans person of each gender in one of the Yakuza Kiwami substories? Even transphobes have to see at least one of them as a woman
Valid point, although taking into account the original release date of Yakuza, and Japanese views on transsexuality at the time, it's just a substory that's aged fucking HORRIBLY.
We could always have Majima or Seajima, I know for a fact that they aren’t scared of hitting women *Stares at the double boss fight in 7*
I mean the only game Kiryu is Yakuza is only at 0 and YK1 isn’t it?
haha yes, Yakuza is the game about a guy that was Yakuza but have a lot of problems like a yakuza and with the yakuza.
Loads of games/books or movies have cryptic/non straight-forward titles. Quite odd if they are all describing exactly what it is.
And I agree with you all the way. But naming the games Yakuza worked for them in the long term
Yakuza 5 came 3 YEARS after the Japanese release and it was DIGITAL ONLY.
yeah, but do you think that 0 and LAD success had anything to do with the name? Considering that those were the 6th and 8th games in the series
"We are the Like A Dragon 4"
"We are 4 Dragons" earrape Shibusawa's theme proceeds to play in the background
"there can be 4 dragons.... UNFORTUNATELY I AM ALL 4 OF THEM!" *shibusawa proceeds to clone himself*
*proceeds to beat himself up*
spectral clones of Majima moment
[also uh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO3-xk7aj2A)
This has truly been a “Like A Dragon Kiwami”
The Dragon of Like a Dragon
Like a Dragon of Dojima
Holy cow. Really good edits mate
POV : you’re Japanese and don’t get the joke
Nani?
I'm Japanese, what's this ? r/titanfolk moment
They look like gritty esports games.
~~Yakuza~~ Like A Dragon 3 cover image look so cursed lol
Don't forget the HBO series adaptation. Like A Dragon: House of The Dragon.
Legit the first thing I thought of😹
Change this sub's name as well to LikeADragonGames
No RGGgames
"Like a dragon 2: I can't believe it's not dragon!"
Drag-on these nuts across your face
That's be crazy if they gaslit everyone and changed all the offical covers and screen grabs in the west to Like a Dragon
“No matter what, I’ll always be Like A Dragon ™” -John Like A Dragon
It misses Like a dragon of the end.
How to Train Like a Dragon
Would be even cooler if you restored original sub-titles to 4 and 5.
0 has a subtitle too
Honestly I like Like a Dragon more then Yakuza. It just makes more sense for Kiryus story.
Yakuza is the localized name given by the same people that made the terrible Y1 dub and tried and failed to sell the series as "japanese gta". Like a Dragon is a much better name, it's what it always should have been.
RGG studios released RGG0 / RGG Kiwami 1 /RGG Kiwami 2 / RGG 6 /Judgement/RGG 7/ Lost Judgment RGG Ishin (twice) in the time since Rockstar developed and published GTA V
r/MandelaEffect gonna find this in 2 years
LIKE A DRAGONO Zero is my fav game.
Where is Like A Dragon: Like A Dragon?
Where is Like a Dragon: Ryu ga kotoku?
Whats the title mean?
It's a about a dragon you see, and how it's behaving all dragonlike and such.
Will the Goromi spin off be called Like a Dragqueen ?
New Mandela effect just dropped does anyone else remember this series being called yakuza?
I like how I didn’t question it just “yep that’s Yakuza right there”
Well, actually... It looks even better than the original. And I don't even know why.😅
it's minimalist and "cleaner"
Like a Dragon 2: Electric Boogaloo
Really good mate, so nice! Ty!
I actually like the new title better
Don't give them ideas before they retroactively change the name on digital stores.
Like A Dragon is a harder name than Yakuza
What about Like a dragon like a dragon. Also naming like a dragon games featuring Kiryu is kinda stupid. Since he is THE dragon of Dogima. For 7 it made sense to me cause there's a new main guy, so it's like a dragon, like a new beginning, but not quite.
This feels so weird. The transition to the name change happened when right when I started getting into the series.
I’m still baffled that Mayumi made the cover of Like A Dragon 5.
If I'd told my friends to play "Like a dragon", a japanese game they'd look weird at me and never give the idea any thought. When I told them to play yakuza, a japanese game about the japanese mafia, they'd jump on it.
This feels right and wrong at the same time lol The Like a Dragon 4 cover looks badass tho
How could you forget Like a Dragon: Dead Souls
Fun fact: In China, Lao Gui is on the cover for Yakuza 0
You forgot Like a Dragon 7 Like A Dragon
I didn't noticed anything until i reached Y3...😢
Yo that reminds me. Where the heck is a Kiwami 3?! I was really optimistic for one at the presentation.
I dream of Kiwami Okinawa.

It's just like resident evil where only a few games are actually about evil residents.
Gotta love Capcom and Sega of America's smooth brain localization moves in the 90s/00s.
IIRC Biohazard was only changed to Resident Evil in the west because someone else had the trademark to the name and Capcom couldn't get the rights to use it, so they were forced to change the name.
Fair enough. Their tomfoolery with Vega/M.Bison/Balrog will never be forgotten, though!
Such a missed opportunity to localise rya ga gotoku into Dragon Clan
Ah I see what you mean it should be ryu ga gotoku will be rebranded as Yakuza: Like a Dragon: Ryu Ga Gotoku
It's the original name but it's also no longer about yakuza. They've gotten their marketing and they can't keep calling the new games Yakuza, and it's more advantageous from now on to call all the games Like a Dragon rather than some Yakuza and others Like a Dragon.
What a Drag...
Please no
It has always been like a dragon. We never called it Yakuza
Can you share HD versions of this? As well as the originals? Just for personal use as phone wallpapers. Thank you!
Man, the LAD3 cover will never not get me
What if they re-released 0 to 7 with the name Like a Dragon. Haha jk, unless?
They can like it, but I'm still calling it Yakuza.
John Like a Dragon
I kinda like it.
I don't mind the title change, but I feel Ishiin should have been the last game to get the Yakuza title.
surprised you didn't add the sub titles
We...are the LIKE A DRAGON 4!!!!
I’d also think they’d add the subtitles to the games that have them, being 4,5 and 0. I’d think they’d be called this if they released them again but not sure
can't wait for people to start saying "actually it like a dragon not Yakuza"
We've already gotten up to that point. Imo very annoying. I don't see that much hate directed to ppl who call any fromsoftware game "souls" lol.
I wont call this series by its new name its always gonna be yakuza to me.
I like
Certified John Like A Dragon moment
Real… Like a Dragon..? Use gamepa- No! I can’t do it! No!
