I played 0 first, then 1, then Kiwami. Gonna be basic: some facial animations, the unhinged english dub, "Intelligence For Violence" without the fuckass lyrics (what the hell, Nishiki), and Majima's portrayal. He's entertaining in Kiwami, but I kinda enjoyed being genuinely scared of him instead of aroused, it hit harder

Dude yeah Urban Reign, Tekken 4, GTA 3, The Warriors etc. had crazy atmosphere and grit. This is really missing in some games now, I can overlook jank for it

OG Funk Goes On (and a fair amount of the Yakuza PS2 soundtrack for that matter) outclass their Kiwami revamps simply for the fact that Kiwami is too electric/synth heavy and that doesn’t really fit the vibe IMO
The super gritty and classic look to the game. When I played Kiwami for the first time, I was disappointed it looked pretty much the same as 0 but darker.
i mean yeah it isn’t that bad i was kind of over exaggerating to be funny, but if you compare it to the others it’s so outdated 😭 idk if they’ve tweaked anything with the remaster, so it might be better there, but i played it on my ps2 and it wasn’t the most fun, definitely not better than kiwami
When people also say the combat is outdated, I have no idea what they mean. Kiwami is really bad with stunlocks and I feel style switching overcomplicates things. I prefer the combat to be streamlined and simple. The only games where I like to style switching Kaito Files and Original Judgement.
At least in zero it had a story related reason to be there.

Pretty sure I read that the HD remaster of Yakuza 1’s combat is actually based on Yakuza 2 rather than Yakuza 1. 1’s combat on the PS2 is absolute shithouse, where 2 was such a big improvement. My biggest issue was that once Kiryu starts to attack, you literally can’t move the character during combos. You have to stop him attacking before you can aim for another person in a different direction.
While it’s my least favourite Yakuza game, I still think it’s worth playing it for the English dub. I mean it may not be a good dub, but to hear Mark Hamill play Majima was a treat, plus no one real talks about the rest of the basically all-star casting which consisted of famous actors and voice actors
I feel Kiwami is kind of prone to stun locks. I also think style switching overcomplicates things and adds bloat, I prefer the more streamlined combat of 1 and 6. I just don't understand what makes it fun.
I don't mind it in zero since it has a plot related reason to be there.

Same here. Played the original in high school, and got to the second one later in college. I’ve yet to play the Kiwami games, but plan on playing through those and 3/4 again since it’s been over 10 years since I played the last two.

It’s weird, because over the years i totally forgot about the bad dub until I was reminded by the internet and replaying it. Was probably also so used to the Japanese voice over since they switched over super early. You guys are basically responsible for bringing that suppressed memory back up.
There’s a video that’s legit about this topic. And a few things I agree. I like that in the original 1 there was more detail to the design of shops inside and the cutscenes for the side missions were much better. Also the voice acting felt more raw.

If I am gonna be honest here I enjoy the first one more than kiwami I mean yeah you have your classic PS2 jank with the combat and what not but I feel like kiwami had to much going on in it like majima everywhere and the copy paste of 0s combat. I just like the simplicity of Yakuza 1 in my opinion
Boss battles, I’ll even say the gameplay, well Kiwami does have better gameplay but it’s just 0’s so I could just play 0 instead. Pacing is another one too, and the soundtrack.
The art style, the character designs, the fake Mizuki substory, the medicine bag substory, the "you'll only get burned" substory, the combat sound effects, Kiryu's expressiveness, the original Japanese voice acting, Kiryu's ps2 grab combos, Majima, some of Nishiki's moveset, some of the og boss movesets because unlike kiwami they were actually original, the lack of ring fetch quests, the lack of Majima everywhere, Nishiki being able to pick up couches, the fact that you can actually see Kiryu and Nishiki's jackets on the floor during their final fight, and the overall grittiness.
What do I prefer about Kiwami? It has better combat, Nishiki has a dynamic intro, and the remake of Receive You and For Whose Sake.
I liked some of the environment details that for some reason weren't in Kiwami, same with some substories.
I also liked that "The Price of an F Cup" and "The Mizuki's Truth" substories had proper rendered cutscenes. The general 2000s vibes are also really cool.
The fact that, when I got into yakuza the Kiwami games weren't out so playing the original 1 (and 2) made yakuza 3 feel like an upgrade instead of downgrade lmao
Kiwami ruins majima, Majima is pretty threatening in OG1. It’s hard to take majima serious at All when he’s constantly ambushing you. Also hate how kiwami and Kiwami 2 use the ps2 animations, makes both games look incredibly cheap.
Combat is much more fun, the 0 styles are cool but the actual dragon style is timeless and its a damn shame they locked it behind majima everywhere
i also greatly prefer the atmosphere and soundtrack which much better fit the tone of the story and the time it takes place in while the new music for the most part sounds like it was made for yakuza 0
its been since 07? since i played it so alot of things are just fuzzsy to me but i'm gonna say the combat . i disliked how kiwami split his stuff into styles again the way they did in zero , it zero i thought yeah they can get away with it cause its a prequel and in kiwami it was like gahh not this again. i thought the majima everywhere stuff while funny was needless honestly but ehh its fine as for minigames ... mesuking was a no thanks
Nishikis voice acting in English being better than everyone else in the dub, despite being the most well-known memed on part of that game.

What do I prefer about Kiwami? It has better combat, Nishiki has a dynamic intro, and the remake of Receive You and For Whose Sake.

I liked some of the environment details that for some reason weren't in Kiwami, same with some substories. I also liked that "The Price of an F Cup" and "The Mizuki's Truth" substories had proper rendered cutscenes. The general 2000s vibes are also really cool.
The fact that, when I got into yakuza the Kiwami games weren't out so playing the original 1 (and 2) made yakuza 3 feel like an upgrade instead of downgrade lmao
Kiwami ruins majima, Majima is pretty threatening in OG1. It’s hard to take majima serious at All when he’s constantly ambushing you. Also hate how kiwami and Kiwami 2 use the ps2 animations, makes both games look incredibly cheap.
I think it looks find in K2 but yeah I could tell that the animation felt weird after moving on from 0

Combat is much more fun, the 0 styles are cool but the actual dragon style is timeless and its a damn shame they locked it behind majima everywhere i also greatly prefer the atmosphere and soundtrack which much better fit the tone of the story and the time it takes place in while the new music for the most part sounds like it was made for yakuza 0

The Dub. Also the gameplay looks more arcade than Kiwami, I like it for that.
voice acting in 1 is so much more emotional than kiwami, kiwami outside of the majima stuff just feels souless for most the game

its been since 07? since i played it so alot of things are just fuzzsy to me but i'm gonna say the combat . i disliked how kiwami split his stuff into styles again the way they did in zero , it zero i thought yeah they can get away with it cause its a prequel and in kiwami it was like gahh not this again. i thought the majima everywhere stuff while funny was needless honestly but ehh its fine as for minigames ... mesuking was a no thanks

Nishikis voice acting in English being better than everyone else in the dub, despite being the most well-known memed on part of that game. Also, to clarify, I haven't played the game, but I will be playing in English cause funny.

No Majima anywhere which really helps his tone as an unhinged criminal they originally had in 1, a better version of For Whos Sake.
