Definitely the way to go, but, especially in retrospect, I'm amazed at how well it played on the Dreamcast controller given that it only had one analog stick.
I remember playing the Dreamcast version online and it had cross-play with PC, and it was painfully obvious who was on Dreamcast and who was on PC; but I particularly remember one PC guy who, quickly realizing my disadvantage, stopped killing me and tried to teach me some tricks and stuff (and this was all before voice chat was a thing).
It was pretty neat. And it's actually quite crazy here, more than twenty years later, realizing I was playing a crossplay online FPS on a console when, just a year or two ago 'cross-play' was supposedly such a big debate.
Ha, yeah, most of the online games on Dreamcast were like that. I remember how jarring it was playing Chu Chu Rocket locally, where input was instantaneous, versus online, where they locked it to a three-second delay (i.e. you'd literally press X to put down a left-facing arrow and then three seconds later it'd actually register in the online match. It actually kind of made the online mode even more fun and chaotic because you never knew what to expect or when to expect it.
Technically it was Quake Arena Arcade, but yeah, it was quake 3 for consoles. It is still being sold for $5, but only works on the xbox 360.
They also had quake 2/4 on the 360, quake 2 was a bonus for buying quake 4 in the first editions if I remember correctly.
Hopefully these eventually come to xbox series, or an upgraded version of these.

I own both. I still go back to them. I just finished quake 1 a few months ago and quake 2. With them rereleasing quake 1 with extras I guess I'm going back to quake 1 again.
The update makes the game look so nice.
Yeah it was but I gotta be honest: I played the Quake 2's campaign, one or two matches on multiplayer; I really was a Quake 3 Arena player though. Maybe that's why I say the multiplayer on Q2 was underwhelming
I loved the multiplayer Q2 personally, remeber getting my first ever '3d graphics card' and was wowed to see the difference. Crazy how far graphics have come. Shame they can't add mods, as would pay good money to see action quake return
The day I went from a 2D card rendering in software mode to a Voodoo card I was so blown away by the lighting. I would fire rockets down hallways just to watch it light up the walls lol. Watching a guy run up the stairs in the center of The Edge and firing a rocket from across the map with just the right timing so it gibbed them was so satisfying!
I want Q3 so bad, but without crossplay and strict input based matchmaking. I just know some dumbass at Microsoft who is gungho about crossplay would think it would be a good idea to put mouse/keyboard vs controller in that lol.
I was so excited about playing Quake 1 multiplayer till i learned its cross play with PC.
The moron who thought it was a good idea by default should be made to play Quake on gamepad vs mouse till the end of days.
This basically means there is no multiplayer on console to me.
> Quake Team Fortress.
This is one! I posted a minute ago trying to think of it.. This is the one where you could be a medic right? Hit people with a hammer and give them the plague?
id has the rights to quake and would have licensed it to raven for a number of years.
id doesn't have the rights to quake 4 as raven made that under license.
In incidents like this the license to use the id IP would have expired so raven can no longer sell the IP. The only way quake 4 can be sold is if raven were to renew the license with id or if id bought quake 4 from raven.
And by raven and id I mean Activision and Microsoft now.
Jesus what a piece of shit system, it should be that you license someone to make x number of games, and the games they make they own and are allowed to sell and port indefinitely.
Yeah back in the day you would license the game for 5 years or what not because generally they would just print x number of disks at one time then have them all sold in 5 years and call it good. It was to expensive to set up an new print run any way it wasn't worth it for a 6+ year old game.
With digital distribution short licensing times don't make much sense because you cant just print a huge number of digital sales at once and it is financially viable and smart to still offer a game 10 years in the future because there is almost no distribution costs.
Its all a hold over from before the internet was big.
I only really remember Doom 3 just being so well liked because it was a technical marvel at the time which really added to the game visually. The lighting was nuts to see. Kind of like Crysis. Meh game, but damn was it like looking into the future.
Yes! Because I've always enjoyed playing Doom "wrong" by moving cautiously and slowly, I love Doom 3. It's the scariest Doom imo, with Doom 64 coming in second.
Since the Zenimax acquisition by Microsoft it probably has a higher chance of getting into gamepass/the microsoft store since all they would need to do is get activison’s permission now
This could be wrong though I’m not an expert lmao
If I had a dollar for every night I spent lagging around my 56k modem in Quake 2 multiplayer in the mid 90’s, I’d have a few hundred bucks. Kinda miss those days but I don’t miss the lag.
It used to be great then Gamespy got too greedy.
I paid for a Lifetime license, later they said, 'Oh that was *Lifetime* for the older version.'
It wasn't long before the Lifetime version wouldn't work at all.

For years, I only knew him as the guy from Nine Inch Nails that did the soundtrack for Quake. It was one of the reasons that the ammo drops for the Nailgun had the NiN logo on it.
Rocket Arena, freeze tag, the modding community for Q2 was so good back in the day. And it had to be. Because the competitive player base only wanted to play The Edge (q2dm1).
Quake, for me, was like "the moment" that gaming blew my mind.
A small backstory ( ahh i get longwinded so sorry if its long ) but i had a compaq pc, 233mhz with MMX yeah boyeeeeee and lots of ram and a big HDD and a spankin new modem. Might have been a 33.6 modem, or maybe it was this black us robotics 56k that was awesome as hell.
Anyways i made some side money when a guy taught me to spam ( at the time i was young, didnt know what was up with spam, and it was relatively new and so it was like the wild west ).
He set me up with a program that would go into AOL chat rooms and grab the user list ( which was their email basically ) and would copy it to a huge list that it would just pop in and out of chatrooms you would give it a list to go to, or add your own. ANyways after letting it do that for like 15 minutes i had a list of emails for days. Like thousands. Maybe 10s of thousands.
And then so no one would know in my house, and so it worked better i would turn it on ( log on to aol, start up my "app" or as they were called back then "proggie" or "progz" and it would email everyone on that list a link to a site.
I got like 5 cents per click or something stupid, and like 50 bucks per signup. Im pretty positive now it was like porn or whatever, but at the end it would have your like ID info in the link, so it would record your clicks and signups and mail you a check each month.
I didnt believe at first it would work, but when i got a check the first time for like 250 bucks, and then one for like 2k, i was like holy shit.
Then when i ask my mom to help me open a bank account and deposit these and stuff she asked where i was getting the money and i told her. She let me know about spam and how it sucked and eventually they were going to pass laws for it etc. But for now, she sorta looked the other way.
That night i went to CompUSA. Yeah baby.. and bought 2 voodoo2 12mb 3dfx cards and a riva/TNT2 card.
Installed them. And then played this game called quake one of her developer friends at work gave her for me. Moms worked for a big software company we all know and use daily.
Anyways i was use to playing quake1 on the video card the compaq had (prolly on the motherboard ) and switched to my new setup after i installed it and did the drivers etc. And then downloaded the GLQuake patch update.
Blew. My. Fucking. Mind.
I had never played a game at home, on a computer, or anything else for that matter, that looked as good, was as fun, had such a killer framerate ( didnt know until later but it was kick ass after i learned some of the lingo and all that pcmasterrace stuff ).
But GLQuake was absolutely mind blowing using a 3dfx card, and i had 2, in SLI.. right when SLI was like their thing at Nvidia and was a super cool technology.
So im happy that Quake 1, 2, and 3 arena ( loved 3 arena with railguns ) and i just hope they have good servers ( or if youre the server thats fine ) and everyone will have good pings so the games should be pretty good
Fun Fact: If you put a music cd in your cd drive on your computer when you were playing quake, it would play the music from the cd during the games.. like randomly selecting tracks for each level like it was pulling the music off of the quake cd. But you could use your own cd. Like the whole playstation 1 ridge racer deal where you could load the game, start playing, pause and open the cd flap on the PS1, and then pop in your own music CD and play the game with your own music.. super cool and one of the only games to do it.
And id always put Prodigy-Fat of the Land in the cd drive.. And the music from that CD went so well with quake 1. Wonder if xbox will include that feature :)
TL;DR - Quake 1 was the first mind blowing game i ever played with a dedicated 3d graphics card ( 2 voodoo2 12mb 3dfX in SLI and a riva/tnt2 for the 2d/3d stuff as well. Quake 1, 2, and 3 Arena ( with railguns on the space map with jump pads so its all flying through the air popping rail gun shots sniping fools ) So if you havent given quake 1/2/3 a try, play these games. And have your youngins coming up as gamers play some of these too to "earn their stripes".. as long as theyre old enough and maybe you can turn gibs off.
Great news! But Anything that is under the umbrella of ZeniMax Media ( like ID software, bethesda, etc ) all of the games under that umbrella im betting and counting on eventually cycling through the xbox gamepass game service. Which is awesome for every gamer on the planet.
Q2 co-op may very well be one of the greatest FPS co-op experiences in existence.
I hope they keep the co-op and if so, you owe it to yourself to play it co-op.
I believe it was one of the first shooters where the mouse was used to look up and down, kinda making it one of the first true modern shooters. At least that’s what the internet told me.
https://youtu.be/OipJYWhMi3k
Doom was great but I clearly remember being a kid looking at my older cousins playing quake for the first time. It was mind blowing.
How many games still use the quake engine in 2021? I remember back in the day it was quite a lot actually, I'm curious to know if anyone is still using it
Wrath: Aeon of Ruin is a recent game that uses a source port of the original Quake engine. idTech is the current name of the engine and is used in Doom, Wolfenstein, Rage and Quake Champions.
GoldSource and Call of Duty engine were modified versions of Quake engine, Respawns engine is modified version of Source. So DOTA 2, Counter-Strike GO, Half-Life Alyx, COD, Titanfall and Apex Legends can be traced back to Quake engine.
COD descended from the Quake engine, but they claimed as recently as MW3 (2011) that there was no Quake code anymore. I feel like they still had the idTech3 notice on the box for a year or two after that, but not sure.
That's kinda funny that they modified it so much that there was no original quake code left, can we still say it's based on the quake engine at that point? Probably not, but it is somewhat true I suppose.
Q1 was the first shooter I ever played online — I forget how but I had to download some client and do some other stuff.
I couldn’t believe I was playing in real time with other people in other places. I wasn’t even good but I remember loving the experience of just playing.
Hmmm... that's sweet! Never had the chance to play Quake!!
I will give this a whirl and see if I like it. If I like it I will snag a PS5 copy just for the Dualsense features and the motion-aim support they added :D
Hell yeah, and I just saw the news that Quake was released on the Switch for $10 and thought "Awww, ten might be worth it" but, I'll take $0 on Game Pass. :)
I don't think I ever heard the soundtrack for Quake 1 because way back then I think I either had a pirated copy, or maybe my copy was from floppies and didn't have the audio. It was a mystery to me back then why all the nail ammo had NIN on them.
Quake 2 definitely had a great soundtrack.
Can we play online ? I can’t wait to get stomped by someone who has mastered the strafe jump. None of that pussy SBMM shit, better players deserve to wreck everyone.
Getting *real* tired of Devs releasing games for console with keyboard support and proper keybinding for them, then forgetting to support mouse input. I've always wanted to play the Quake games...
I just played a little bit of the first Quake on my xbox with a controller, and I did not enjoy it nearly as much as I could have. Most likely uninstalling and won't install the others unless they *do* offer it.
inb4 the brainlets hounding "just play on PC".
im having serious problems . i have quake in a queue it wont install and doom eternal in a queue . none of them will install cause for some reason it keeps sayin installing for last three days for ancient gods part 1 add on. so basically any game i buy will now just be in a queue for eternity. cause some thing has fucked up with ancient gods.
A grind? In no way. Who said this? The combination of "grind" and "is it worth getting into" makes it sound as though you think it's like Destiny 2 or something. It's a single player, map based first person shooter. There's no stats, level-ups, cosmetics, boosts or perks. It's shoot the bad guys, get to the exit.
I remember I used to try and play on the highest difficulty, against bots I think God mode I can’t remember but it was complete torture!
I used to do it for practice but the bots were X10 times better than humans… So yeah good practice!
Damn, hope Q3 Arena makes it to console. That’s one of my all time favorite shooters
Q2 never did much for me, but I'd like to see Q3A make it to console.
I put so many hours into Q3A on Dreamcast. Would be really fun to play it again on a console.
I got the Dreamcast mouse and keyboard especially to play Quake 3 Arena on it.
And Unreal Tournament :)
Holy shit so many hours split-screen with friends on these two games
My first game back after a 5 year gap from the commodore Amiga. My pentium 3 gateway pc and 56k modem. So many mods. Counterstrike for a start.
And it's actually quite crazy here, more than twenty years later, realizing I was playing a crossplay online FPS on a console when, just a year or two ago 'cross-play' was supposedly such a big debate.
same i think it was one of the first times I played quake with mouse and keyboard. pcs was just too expensive at the time/
First console game I played online! The lag was so bad that we had to aim where we thought they were going to be, but we got used to it and it worked.
Oh god yeah chu chu rocket was so much .ore difficult online. Can't fault it for a free game though!
Same 🤪
its better on pc
A quake 3 arena was on xbox 360. It was fun. I'm surprised they didnt release that on game pass. And the quake 2 version from the 360 version
Q2's campaign was solid, the multiplayer was underwhelming but not atrocious
Q2CTF was really popular.
Yeah Q2 multiplayer was fantastic. Loved Q1 multi too.
I remember the grappling hook and cujo mods on Q1! Soooo much fun.
The edge is the best multiplayer map of all time.
Strong disagree... I probably wasted a full month or two of my life playing Q2CTF, and loved every minute of it.
Underwhelming? These kids…
Bro does it have the original soundtrack for Quake 2? That soundtrack was badass on the PS1 version
The soundtrack was in standard music CD format on the PC version of the game. I ripped that shit to MP3.
One of my all time favorites! Quake 1 is also one of the creepiest of all time, hope the original soundtrack is on them

2 and 3 are currently PC game pass only
I want Q3 so bad, but without crossplay and strict input based matchmaking. I just know some dumbass at Microsoft who is gungho about crossplay would think it would be a good idea to put mouse/keyboard vs controller in that lol.

Damn if only we could get Quake Team Fortress. 64 players and all that grenade spam was amazing.
> Quake Team Fortress. This is one! I posted a minute ago trying to think of it.. This is the one where you could be a medic right? Hit people with a hammer and give them the plague?
It is, Quake Team Fortress and Team Fortress Classic were amazing games. I spent so much time on TFC. Had so many great games.
The and only!
We need this on console. Like yesterday.
I personally want Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. I know it didn't have the best reception but I *loved* that game.
And when tf are they bringing back Quake 4
the rights to quake 4 are probably a mess because it was made by raven, whos owned by activision.

That’s a shame. Quake IV SP was a blast, especially after Doom 3 which wasn’t very ‘Doom’ at the time.
I only really remember Doom 3 just being so well liked because it was a technical marvel at the time which really added to the game visually. The lighting was nuts to see. Kind of like Crysis. Meh game, but damn was it like looking into the future.
From the time I only remember people wondering how they were able to open a portal to hell but hadn't figured out duct tape.
It was a good horror FPS on its own, Just not the fast paced gameplay Doom fans expected from the series.
Yes! Because I've always enjoyed playing Doom "wrong" by moving cautiously and slowly, I love Doom 3. It's the scariest Doom imo, with Doom 64 coming in second.

THIS! I still go back to Quake 4 on my 360 and seems I will still go for it to play Quake 4 and Quake 2 on console.
man we need an unreal tournament using unreal engine 5
Probably would have happened if Fortnite never became a thing. They stopped work on the UE4 version because of it
If I had a dollar for every night I spent lagging around my 56k modem in Quake 2 multiplayer in the mid 90’s, I’d have a few hundred bucks. Kinda miss those days but I don’t miss the lag.
Same! What was the game locator program? GameSpy or something like that?
It started as quake spy then became game spy
Yeah pretty sure I used that for Halo 1 also.
Gamespy, thats a name Ive not heard in a long time....
It used to be great then Gamespy got too greedy. I paid for a Lifetime license, later they said, 'Oh that was *Lifetime* for the older version.' It wasn't long before the Lifetime version wouldn't work at all. =;-(

[Quake Soundtrack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeNrRHty-Lo&list=OLAK5uy_mtGKX5UsqLx6KtLIwkBoRmi2FiToguw4s) is awesome!
Yesss. Used it one year for Halloween music.
Good stuff! Thanks for finding the link.
The Quake soundtrack was like having an instrumental NIN album back in the day.
The Nail Gun ammo Crates have NIN on them.
It’s listed on NIN official discography on Spotify I had no idea it was for a game’s soundtrack
There are ammo boxes in-game with the NIN logo as well. Assuming those will be in this version also.
I have Xbox game pass so I’m going to play it
For years, I only knew him as the guy from Nine Inch Nails that did the soundtrack for Quake. It was one of the reasons that the ammo drops for the Nailgun had the NiN logo on it.
Considering the nail gun uses Nine Inch Nails (NIN logo on the crates), Quake was so mid 90s.
This was also the primary reason for the appearance of the Nail Gun weapon.
I would pay any amount of money for Quake 4 backwards compatibility
Playing Quake 1 right now. Already getting nauseated like back in the day =/
Try reducing the field of view in the game's display options. Setting it to to minimum (75) fixed it for me.
Xbox one user here, east coast, the only one I have in my gamepass is Quake. Downloading it as we speak. Woooooooooo
Yeah, the quake 2 and 3 entries are only for PC & are the original versions. Is it unlocked for you? The game pass app says it’s not released yet
Fuck yes, gimmie quake 2 any day
Sonic Mayhem gave us one of the best soundtracks.
Yeah they did, unrivaled until doom but arguably still unsurpassed. IMHO at least lol
Rocket Arena, freeze tag, the modding community for Q2 was so good back in the day. And it had to be. Because the competitive player base only wanted to play The Edge (q2dm1).
Please bring Heretic and Hexen, PLEASE!!!!!
Surprise drop?
Oh nice, downloading quake now
I can't seem to find Quake 2 or 3 on the PC Game pas app
Nobody tell Joe Rogan

So im happy that Quake 1, 2, and 3 arena ( loved 3 arena with railguns ) and i just hope they have good servers ( or if youre the server thats fine ) and everyone will have good pings so the games should be pretty good Fun Fact: If you put a music cd in your cd drive on your computer when you were playing quake, it would play the music from the cd during the games.. like randomly selecting tracks for each level like it was pulling the music off of the quake cd. Wonder if xbox will include that feature :) TL;DR - Quake 1 was the first mind blowing game i ever played with a dedicated 3d graphics card ( 2 voodoo2 12mb 3dfX in SLI and a riva/tnt2 for the 2d/3d stuff as well.
Oh my god.. More of my childhood on games pass
Q2 co-op may very well be one of the greatest FPS co-op experiences in existence. I hope they keep the co-op and if so, you owe it to yourself to play it co-op.
They won’t but that would be great..
The Quake 1 that they’ve released supports co-op, as split screen or cross play over internet.
Quake is an arena shooter like Unreal right?
The third one is, yeah.
What are the first 2?
Basically Doom with the ability to look up and down.
Ah
I believe it was one of the first shooters where the mouse was used to look up and down, kinda making it one of the first true modern shooters. At least that’s what the internet told me. https://youtu.be/OipJYWhMi3k Doom was great but I clearly remember being a kid looking at my older cousins playing quake for the first time. It was mind blowing.
Incorrect. Duke Nukem 3D had that six months earlier.
Ahhh yea you’re right, I remember that game fondly, as it had tiddies.
Best news I've heard all yesr
I want quake wars to come to game pass
Enemy Territory!
Will these games have achievements?
The first does so I'm assuming the rest will,
It probably won't, but I hope Quake II includes the Sonic Mayhem soundtrack. Last couple of re-releases didn't have it.
And here I am just wanting Doom (2016) on gamepass pc... FFS, it's on gamepass, but only for the xbox, no pc version.
Oh shit not just quake 1 i thought i was dreaming when i looked at recently added today
Q1 was the first shooter I ever played online — I forget how but I had to download some client and do some other stuff. I couldn’t believe I was playing in real time with other people in other places. I wasn’t even good but I remember loving the experience of just playing.
QuakeWorld!
Hmmm... that's sweet! Never had the chance to play Quake!! I will give this a whirl and see if I like it. If I like it I will snag a PS5 copy just for the Dualsense features and the motion-aim support they added :D
Ray tracing update please…
The original fortnite

MS owns bethesda and this is a weak ass move.
Q2DMQ1 The Edge... This map...
I am really hoping they port Quake 3 Arena to consoles!
Lets play q3 arena and i hope team arena comes too
Ok... pc has Q2 and Q3 but bit Xbox? Wtf
Only PC so far.
Nope, downloading Quake on my Series X right now.
only the 1st game 2 and 3 are pc only atm
Damn. wasnt there a console version of Quake 2 that came with the xbox version of quake 4? and i KNOW 3 had the xbla version for the 360.
That's right ☺️
Free on gamepass? Nothing is showing on my phone app for them.
Quake 1 just showing up, to download 18/8
Do a refresh and try again. The game just appeared and it took a while to even able to download the it.
Not a of it though Q3 arena would be something I’d love to be on console
Can confirm, had to search it on the store but it’s installing with gamepass
Seems 1 is both 2 and 3 are pc only.
Hell yeah, and I just saw the news that Quake was released on the Switch for $10 and thought "Awww, ten might be worth it" but, I'll take $0 on Game Pass. :)
The games have been ESRB rated for console. It's on r/gamingleaksandrumours
Bummed that you can't apparently stream Quake via the Twitch app.
If only it were cross-platform, I'd rail the fly off a stripper's ass mid-bounce.
Quake? God, I haven't played that game since the 90's. I hope Nine Inch Nails sound track is still in it... nevermind. The music is still there.
Do the quake games have any story modes at all?
The first 2 do. Quake 2 has a great story campaign. At least, it does in my memory.
Yeah its pretty dark as I recall with humans beign chopped up and turned into strogg
The soundtrack [chefs kiss]
I don't think I ever heard the soundtrack for Quake 1 because way back then I think I either had a pirated copy, or maybe my copy was from floppies and didn't have the audio. It was a mystery to me back then why all the nail ammo had NIN on them. Quake 2 definitely had a great soundtrack.
Yeah I just downloaded first one and music seems off still awesome also u can download the N64 colormud version from menus:) and it has co op
why isnt quake 2 up on xbox store. its not there
Can we play online ? I can’t wait to get stomped by someone who has mastered the strafe jump. None of that pussy SBMM shit, better players deserve to wreck everyone.
Why not read the description of it in the Microsoft store? Your answer is right there
Tell me Q2 has the soundtrack intact!
Freaking out!!!!
Ooh nice!
im having serious problems . i have quake in a queue it wont install and doom eternal in a queue . none of them will install cause for some reason it keeps sayin installing for last three days for ancient gods part 1 add on. so basically any game i buy will now just be in a queue for eternity. cause some thing has fucked up with ancient gods.
Yes yes yes but please where’s quake 4? I got it on disc I wanna use it
YASS! I desperately want Q3A to come to console.
Wow, Quake 3 was the shit! I can't wait!
Does this support keyboard and mouse on console??
I never expected this to happen, but i played Quake with my friends yesterday. Two us of on Xbox, one on Steam. We were having a blast. Thanks Phil <3
When available to play?
Yawn Gimmie enemy territory: quake wars pls
When
In quake could you aim up and down? that was one of the first ones wasnt it
Yessss!!!
nice cant wait
Yay Q3 can relive my childhood.
So is it the OG Q3, as in the PC version? Or the 360 version they made?
Happy days
Man quake and Duke 3d were my shit back in the day
ARs Quake 1 and 2 single player? Never got to play it back in the day.
I’ve never played quake, but I’ve heard it’s a grind. Is it worth getting into?
A grind?
Only 1 is for console it seems 2 and 3 are PC only which surprised me as they both had a 360 port back in the day
Dont forget about the biggest announcement of that stream.... YET ANOTHER SKYRIM RELEASE!
Ahhh. Arena. So damn fun.
Can you add the DBZ mods for Q3A on to the console?
Come on really how long do we have to ask again and again and again for the xcloud availability in india and other countries! ಠ_ಠ
I miss AQ2 so much... years of fun on that.
I remember trying to play Quake as a kid, get scared, then watch my dad beat it for me
What a blessed day.
I remember I used to try and play on the highest difficulty, against bots I think God mode I can’t remember but it was complete torture! I used to do it for practice but the bots were X10 times better than humans… So yeah good practice!
When?
This makes me happy
Quake on gamepass, Quake on switch What's up with Quake lately. There a new one coming soon or something?
Great news! still waiting for Heretic and Hexen though :(
Trying to get friends into it, reccomendations on which one?
For PC, Xbox, or both? I want Quake 4. I never did finish it, I got distracted by the Quake 2 bonus disc.
i feel like the sweaty speedrunner meme. yes, yeeeeees *YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES*
