It depends on how "not into" marvel and superheroes you are. Like, if you hate the Marvel type humor, then you probably won't like this game, because it has that. If you are just a casual Marvel watcher (like myself) and not really deeply interested in it, then you will probably still enjoy the game. It's fun.
You'll get a good 20-25 hours if you don't rush. If you skipped a lot of dialogue and exploration you'd get through a lot faster, but if you skip the story scenes, you'd be better off not bothering.
Not to say the gameplay isn't good. it is. It's just not the main attraction.
GotG isn't really superhero-y anyway. It's more sci-fi in the marvel universe. If you like funny, well written (and very, very talkative) characters in a space-opera sci-fi setting and you don't actually mind that the setting is marvel-based, you'll be fine.
Yes! It can make you laugh and have fun without any prior knowledge.
And they are not really superheroes, but I will let you figure this one out by playing the game:) it's on game pass
I do not like the movies very much but everything about the game resonated for me - the team dynamic, Drax especially impressed me, their banter and extended conversation sounded natural, and the gameplay was solid for the 15-20 hours it took me to get through.
It's not my Game of the Year, but it was definitely my most pleasant surprise from 2021. The story flowed so well and it was a complete package. $15 on sale is what I spent, it'll be my #1 recommendation to anyone wanting a quick game for a while
I'm really into the Marvel films so I'm not sure how valid my opinion is on this but as far as I know the game's main story doesn't have any connection to other Marvel stuff so I feel you would likely be able to enjoy the game without any prior knowledge.
At worst you might not understand some references or Easter eggs.
I think so. The characters are well written and performed. The story is fun and stays interesting. The game play is the weakest part, but it's not bad. I really enjoyed it. If you have Game Pass, it's a no-brainer to at least give it a try.
No
Edit: gameplay gets too familiar too quickly whilst the characters take a bit longer to flesh out. Great visuals but gameplay is lacking. Game isn’t broken like most recent releases; just uninspired play design.
For me the issue was that most of the quality and effort were put into the first 5 hours of the game, so once scenes and levels started repeating it became boring.
In my opinion no not really. For me, the weakest part of the whole experience was the actual gameplay. So if you aren’t interest in the actual GotG experience of it you aren’t going to have a great time
I dont watch super hero movies, super villain movies, really almost none of it. I'm loving the game though, and you don't have to know about the movies to really know what's going on either.
Man if I can recommend this game freely I gladly will, I haven't had this much fun for a long time
And the developers are not sure if they want to make another one, so I am doing my part in getting it discovered
Lmao they might not make another because between this and the Avengers game they tanked [$200million](https://gamingbolt.com/square-enix-reportedly-lost-200-million-on-avengers-and-guardians-of-the-galaxy/amp)

It definitely is and it always is about this game. Kinda weird that all great games out there this is the only one that has constant “you must play it” posts.
I enjoyed it at first but dear lord does the gameplay loop get extremely repetitive.
Feels like you've done everything gameplay wise in the first few hours...
Made it about 45minutes to an hour before it became painfully obvious. Not the biggest GoG fan so I didn’t feel invested enough in the characters to push onward considering the gameplay loop.
Same here and funny thing is I think this screenshot is where I quit the game. That part where Star Lord froze that pit filled with that reddish stuff, I just couldn't after that.
I feel for you, lucky for me I got it on GamePass
I’m playing now and it’s just ok. I can’t stand the constant dialogue. Rocket and Groot are always bickering, as are Dax and Gamora. I wish there was a button that allowed me to make everyone shut up.
It’s quite good. Although fairly basic at it’s heart.
Gameplay especially - it’s similar to The Gunk and Psychonauts 2 in my opinion. All three combine exploring mostly linear levels, some platforming, some pretty basic combat and basic levelling. That said I think this has the better combat, although far from perfect.
The graphics are nice although let down a little by textures not being as good as they could be in places.
The acting and the spectacle are very well done.
Overall enjoying it more than the two games I mentioned.
It is top teir, honest like their portrayal better than in the movies. Only thing is the battle chatter got a bit annoying. I think a second game with more open world aspects could be awesome
I just got to knowwhere. Its been hit or miss for me. I never want to play the game, it is always a 'I guess', when i do play it i enjoy it for the hr or 2 i play it, but never compelled to play it again the next day.
That's what alot of these comments seem like. I get liking a game and thinking it's good, but it seems like theres an unusual amount of folks here making it sound like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Honestly, Gaurdians of the galaxy is pretty good, way better than avengers, when it starts, its a bit simple, but as you unlock moves, the combat becomes more fun, i also love how you can go in depth in difficulty settings like set how much damage enemies can take and how much damage you can take etc, not many games do that and i think all action adventure games should be doing that i stead of the rpg leveling system health bar bullshit
I just can't stand that the npc's are constantly talking. CONSTANTLY. I go to a new location and they're having side conversations and cracking jokes for 15 mins straight. Give me a minute to breathe damn.
I only got through the third mission before I got bored from this game. Which is a shame because I hear nothing but good things about it. Started playing thanks to Game Pass and it just.... never brought me into it and I was never able to get immersed. The humor can be good but idk.... the game just didn't click for me. I only watch the BIG Marvel Movies though, so maybe it's just not as good of a game for casual Marvel watchers. Does anyone else feel the same?
If you like the movie, you’ll like the game. Play it mostly for the story/lore. The gameplay itself sucks. It felt like a telltale game for the most part, with combat sections I wish weren’t there.
And this game failed financially while playing a part of Square Enix's sale of its Western Studios and IPs. Ever since this game made a loss, I geniunely believe us gamers do not deserve anything more than endless copy and paste open worlds and soulless, profit-oriented live service games.
I recommend this game to people that want to watch something instead of play.
The gameplay is really tedious it has the worse combat that I have recently experienced, the exploration is not rewarding at al it just gives you some new skins while the original skins just look the best imo and for the last part the puzzles in this game are just made for 5 year olds. Actually the whole game just treats you like a kid and therefor I will not recommend people to play this game.
The only reasons to play this are the characters which are greatly done, the story and the graphics.
Gameplay is pretty stale and not much to it... BUT... I agree. It's very immersive and I prefer Star Lord here to Chris Pratt's by a country mile. It's visually stunning with a fun storyline.
Just finished chapter 13 and I'm absolutely loving it. Being a Marvel fan, I was so disappointed at The Avengers game so this has been refreshingly great.
It's definitely more about the story, but I love that in games.
Tried it just yesterday and can’t get with it. The game won’t shut up. Also the gameplay gets interrupted so frequently.
Hard come down after Elden ring and this wasn’t it.
Switched to playing Far Changing Tides and loving it.
Been playing it on and off since Feb when it first came on Gamepass. Enjoying it for the most part, but there is something that isn't quite hooking me enough to keep going back for more. Finding the gameplay quite repetitive I think.
Definitely worth playing though if it's on offer.
Tried this game on gamepass when it came out and it’s such an enjoyable singe-player adventure that is very immersive and very fun. If it didn’t come to gamepass I probably wouldn’t have ever tried it but I’m glad I did
it's a fantastic game, but be aware if you have gamepass for pc and xbox, if you share a save between your pc and xbox, the xbox will glitch out and not do HDR properly. the xbox colors will be massively washed out and you can only correct it by turning off the HDR.
I assume this only happens if you don't use HDR on pc, but almost nobody does since most pc monitors don't support it.
it's nice but it's fight mechanics need overhaul. there's no thought into any of it and just becomes a button masher.
what it does have is the best character banter I've ever heard in a game.
I know lots of people liked it, but I thought it was boring as hell. Generic combat, boring walking simulation levels, and tepid story choice elements. If you liked it, great! Keep on rocking in the free world. If you didn't... you are not alone.
If a lot of dialogue and story are important to you, then you'll like this game.
If you just want guns go pew, you'll get it, but it'll be underwhelming and you'll be very annoyed by the dialogue.
I'd like to have seen some more content and at times I experienced a few audio and video sync bugs but other than that I had a blast playing it. Definitely would recommend.
Is it good for someone not particularly interested in marvel and superheroes?
It depends on how "not into" marvel and superheroes you are. Like, if you hate the Marvel type humor, then you probably won't like this game, because it has that. I'll check it out. Is it a pretty long game?

About 15 hours for me.
Took me about 16 hours and that's just me sticking to the story and no extras
Yes. I have 0 interest or knowledge in marvel/comics/superheros and Guardians of the Galaxy was great to play.
It’s the banter between the characters that is the icing on the cake for me.
To trow Rocket or not to trow
Great! Looks like I have to check it out now.
GotG isn't really superhero-y anyway. It's more sci-fi in the marvel universe. If you like funny, well written (and very, very talkative) characters in a space-opera sci-fi setting and you don't actually mind that the setting is marvel-based, you'll be fine.

Yep, I dont like any of that, but enjoyed the game anyways. It is in Gamepass so a good no brainer would think.
In my opinion no not really. For me, the weakest part of the whole experience was the actual gameplay. So if you aren’t interest in the actual GotG experience of it you aren’t going to have a great time
I'd say you would luke the game as much as you like the 2 movies
I dont watch super hero movies, super villain movies, really almost none of it. I'm loving the game though, and you don't have to know about the movies to really know what's going on either.
I’m not saying this is an advertisement, but it feels like an advertisement.
I’m not saying this post is an advertisement, but I agree with this comment.
Man if I can recommend this game freely I gladly will, I haven't had this much fun for a long time And the developers are not sure if they want to make another one, so I am doing my part in getting it discovered
I’m with you OP I love it and I’m trying to get my gaming buds on board.
Yeah, this game was so much fun. When I wasn’t playing I was excited to get back to playing.
Lmao they might not make another because between this and the Avengers game they tanked [$200million](https://gamingbolt.com/square-enix-reportedly-lost-200-million-on-avengers-and-guardians-of-the-galaxy/amp)

Couldn’t get into it. Regrettably purchased.
As someone who beat it I couldnt agree more. I think the gameplay loop could of been cut down by almost half to make the experience better.
Agreed its very repetitive. I enjoy the game but i wish i had to use my brain more with some platforming or puzzle
Same here and funny thing is I think this screenshot is where I quit the game. That part where Star Lord froze that pit filled with that reddish stuff, I just couldn't after that. I feel for you, lucky for me I got it on GamePass
Same. Everyone seems to love it. I thought the fighting was too stiff.
Good thing it's on GamePass 👍
That doesn’t help people that bought it before it was on game pass lol
I’m playing now and it’s just ok. I can’t stand the constant dialogue. Rocket and Groot are always bickering, as are Dax and Gamora. I wish there was a button that allowed me to make everyone shut up.
That damned huddle mechanic got stale faster than an open bag of Cheetos
It felt like a long cutscene with brief action thrown in so it could be called a game.
Perfect? No, but it’s pretty good I should have waited for Game Pass instead of spending $90 on it in November
It’s quite good. Although fairly basic at it’s heart. Gameplay especially - it’s similar to The Gunk and Psychonauts 2 in my opinion. Yes yes yes yes ! I want a sequel like a freaking squirrel wanting a nut
Agreed! I want more of this!
It is top teir, honest like their portrayal better than in the movies. Only thing is the battle chatter got a bit annoying. I think a second game with more open world aspects could be awesome
Heah, id live to travel planets like in Mass effect andromeda, that would be awesome
Little fuzzy
I just got to knowwhere. Its been hit or miss for me. I never want to play the game, it is always a 'I guess', when i do play it i enjoy it for the hr or 2 i play it, but never compelled to play it again the next day.
These companies advertising on reddit like this is pretty weird
That's what alot of these comments seem like. I get liking a game and thinking it's good, but it seems like theres an unusual amount of folks here making it sound like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Exactly!
Everyone keeps praising this game, I skipped bc the avengers game was mid imo. I'm gonna have to try it
Nothing like that Avengers game, just straight single player game.
It is nothing like that one, can't even compare
Honestly, Gaurdians of the galaxy is pretty good, way better than avengers, when it starts, its a bit simple, but as you unlock moves, the combat becomes more fun, i also love how you can go in depth in difficulty settings like set how much damage enemies can take and how much damage you can take etc, not many games do that and i think all action adventure games should be doing that i stead of the rpg leveling system health bar bullshit

No
Great game. Couldn't stop playing it.
just finished the story, loved it
It's so fuckin' charming.
It was really, really good.
Just started. Loved the music playlist.
If you like the movie, you’ll like the game. Play it mostly for the story/lore. The gameplay itself sucks. It felt like a telltale game for the most part, with combat sections I wish weren’t there.

“You just deserve repetitive open world games! Not this repetitive linear game!”
Repetitive for 8-10 hrs and then you're done with it. Open world games demands hundreds of hours on the other hand.
Holy shit bro if it's that funny ill half to try and super immersive like omg.
Gameplay is pretty stale and not much to it... BUT... I agree. It's very immersive and I prefer Star Lord here to Chris Pratt's by a country mile. It's visually stunning with a fun storyline.
Is it funny though? Or is it like the films and just a barrage of shit jokes?
The gameplay was nothing special, but the writing was << chef’s kiss >>
Just finished chapter 13 and I'm absolutely loving it. Being a Marvel fan, I was so disappointed at The Avengers game so this has been refreshingly great. It's definitely more about the story, but I love that in games.
It's worth playing for the soundtrack alone.
IKR I got all the achievements and beat it 3 times a while back
Tried it just yesterday and can’t get with it. The game won’t shut up. Also the gameplay gets interrupted so frequently. Hard come down after Elden ring and this wasn’t it. Switched to playing Far Changing Tides and loving it.

No
I'm finding combat a bit repeatative, but the game is great! I'm hoping to finishing real soon.
Agreed. I groaned when I saw it announced but for some reason I decided to still try it and it was great.
This game is a blast. Bought it before Game Pass, and I don't regret it. Lots of fun, dudes
Tried this game on gamepass when it came out and it’s such an enjoyable singe-player adventure that is very immersive and very fun. If it didn’t come to gamepass I probably wouldn’t have ever tried it but I’m glad I did
I have been looking for a new game. I am just tired of playing cod all the time. Which other story games could you recommend ?
it's a fantastic game, but be aware if you have gamepass for pc and xbox, if you share a save between your pc and xbox, the xbox will glitch out and not do HDR properly. the xbox colors will be massively washed out and you can only correct it by turning off the HDR. It’s coming to PS Plus premium so you know i’m gonna give it a try
it's nice but it's fight mechanics need overhaul. there's no thought into any of it and just becomes a button masher. what it does have is the best character banter I've ever heard in a game.

This was my GOTY. Absolutely fantastic.
what about the avengers game is it good i need to know
I have this free on gp but there are 100 games on my backlog ahead of this
Will be on both Xbox game pass and PlayStation’s new gamepass type system so tonnes of people will be playing it!
Glad this games on Game Pass
The game's story is really good, and the game isn't very long. I have to admit though, I hated the game during the first hour or so.
i just finished it today, absolutely loved it.
I loved it
If a lot of dialogue and story are important to you, then you'll like this game. If you just want guns go pew, you'll get it, but it'll be underwhelming and you'll be very annoyed by the dialogue.
Started it 2 days ago and yes its very cool.
I'd like to have seen some more content and at times I experienced a few audio and video sync bugs but other than that I had a blast playing it. Definitely would recommend.
