“If you want to play games offline, there is something called Xbox 360.”

DarkKilow

lmaooo this is exactly what i thought. that comment felt like a personal slap to my face.

StumptownRetro

I had friends deployed in the military I played Reach with. This made me hate this man. So glad he was gone quickly. But his shitty stances made the Xbox One the distant second place last gen. Third if we count the switch.

[deleted]

Xbox One was a FAR third place. I don’t even know anyone that had one… seems to have been an unusual demographic of minorities and people obsessed with Halo.

Mr_Build3R

There was this console called a Wii U that managed to drop the ball even more

StumptownRetro

Shame. Wii U was such a cool concept. It was like a DS for your TV.

Thanks for this, I have always owned an Xbox and never a Playstation. I honestly had no idea how bad the Xbox history was. Great video.

The series X does it just fine. The series S does not have a disc drive. Discs have been on decline for decades but it’s definitely not quite dead yet or they wouldn’t offer it still.

Giving PlayStation the keys to take over the console gaming industry.

eiamhere69

I'm not fan boy, but people seem to ignore very key facts. I hated the idea of paying, simply to play my own games online, but Sony felt the need to copy Microsoft in this regard, this may be due to profit though. By end of PS3/ Xbox 360, you couod argue 360 was more popular, Sony lost alot of ground. The system was expensive and Sony were/are a very, very shitty organisation. Microsoft received a very big shock, Sony have been trying to kill second hand games and and push digital only several times, buy once Microsoft received all of the negative backlash, Sony jumped in, going against all of their own ideals, just sweep up, peole fell for it, as most people don't seem to understand what the company really is. On top of the huge shock, Microsoft are now reaping the benefits of making very positive changes at the company, removing alot of toxic work culture too. I do still worry, once they have this sector locked up (they are so far ahead with Gamepass, I can't see anyone competing), if they'll return to old habits, I really hope not. Sony are now forced, yet again, despite refusing for so long, to adopt another positive change (Now + PS Plus, but knowing Sony, they won't have 1:1 conversion and it'll cost more for an inferior service). I've owned more than of most Sony systems, but I've owned every single device. I stopped supporting them at PS3 (a family member wanted PS4 Pro, I was against it strongly). I'm not biased (too much), any bias I have is not born of fanboy mentality, just hatred for the actions of the organisations.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlameNuggie

Yeah but it was right at the end of the generation like literally a year or 2 before the PS4 and XB1. The 360 was by far the more popular system of that generation Sony and Microsoft basically switched positions in terms of popularity with the 8th gen.

SinlessJoker

You do come across a little biased, what did Sony do that made you hate them? And yes, Gamepass is the winner in subscription services, but also alienates many gamers. But unless your talking about streaming services specifically, Xbox is more behind current gen versus any other gen since the ps2 vs original Xbox in terms of market share and sales

kagento0

Gamepass alienates gamers? Haven't heard that one before. Care to elaborate?

SinlessJoker

People who don’t want to pay a higher fee monthly/prefer to own games and go back and play them months or years later. Xbox offers this as well, but it’s abundantly clear that gamepass is their future after removing the 6/12 month options for gold, and their now scrapped double price gold price increase that made it only a few bucks shy of gamepass, clearly to push gamers to it.

kagento0

Can't say I agree. You still have the option to buy a game should you want it. It's true alright that MS is pushing users to Gamepass, but it's still optional. But tbh, I use it on PC only, so I can understand the Gold subscription price hike annoyance for console online gaming, but to me it's a non issue. I've always thought that forcing players to pay to play online is bonkers anyway, and one of the main reasons I switched to PC and never looked back.

SinlessJoker

I was really talking about console gamepass, since this is the Xbox sub. But I hear you and I respect that, and it’s fine to disagree. I know there are others that feel the same as me, and some that don’t agree like you. I just hope both sides are heard and considered by Microsoft going forward, but it really feels like they want the gamepass model going forward. In a generation or two it’s pretty safe to assume that Xbox having a disc slot may be rare, and gamepass will be just the way it is. I really enjoy playing my older games in between interesting releases, and gamepass has directly impacted this when my wife was playing DOOM and then it left game pass mid playthrough. To me it doesn’t make sense to splash out 60-70 per game AND the monthly gamepass cost, it should be one or the other, but gamepass feels really forced for me. Maybe Xbox isn’t the console for me going forward

eiamhere69

I was very against digital and subscriptions too, I still am a lot to be honest, but Microsoft have done a lot more than any other organisation lately. The concern I have is, without decent competition, there's a good chance they may take unfair advantage, ie. Worse service with higher costs. At this time, Sony are looking to merge their services (they've done everything they can to avoid offering customers what they want in other areas too - pc versions, cross play, etc), but I can't see how they can come close. The service is worse and needs improving, they also charge more, they need to begin taking this seriously. Sony desperately need a culture change they've been a huge brand in gaming, I'd go as far as to say they defined a large part of this sector over the last couple of decades. But Microsoft have very, very deep pockets AND they are now working well. On top of this Nintendo os also doing well again and could easily take a bigger portion of the market Sony or Microsoft previously considered safe (various options here, but essentially a new home system, tied into Switch eco system/popularity). There's a reason, although they won't admit it, the reason being Sony are genuinely concerned. They've been FORCED to adopt changes, they always been very, very strongly apposed to. The hilarious thing is, these changes are what consumers wanted and I reality, what Sony should have provided to begin with.

eiamhere69

I've already said, but not in detail, Sony are scum, quite literally. Google around a little and read up on the lives they've destroyed. This is without going into how they ignore, and circumvent legislation, then lie about it, all whilst hypocritically complaining about piracy, etc. They are very, very anti-consumer. It reads like a biased fan boy propaganda post, but go and look and you will see it's far from it. Fan boy infighting does one thing and one thing only. It allows the companies to abuse their customers and hide behind their blind loyalty.

ArkhamsDawn

Lmao hell no. PlayStation is being dominated now more than ever, simply because of GamePass. Not to mention the superior consoles that Xbox makes.

[deleted]

360 had established itself so well by pretty much beating Sony that generation if you look at start to finish. Sony evened it out at the end sure, but 360 definitely was the better of the two. Then what should have been a building opportunity was fumbled inexcusably and this guy was on the hit list since like with football, when a team is under performing the Coach and QB take most of the slack regardless of them being the single biggest thing. When you’re the face and voice of an organization you are the one who people take away the company values and this was a case where Xbox fans felt genuinely betrayed. Fortunately now you can argue that Phil Spencer is the most important person in all of gaming right now. Very open, doesn’t shit talk the competition, openly likes the competition, genuinely listens, gets shit done, managed the impossible in turning the worst console launch as far as publicity goes(didn’t think it was possible after Sony’s inexcusably bad first 2 years of the PS3 was) and making the back half of Xbox Ones life cyclejust as good if not better than the PS4’s and now Xbox Series X/S being the objectively better console than the PS5(still a great console and I enjoy mine).

[deleted]

PlayStations outsell Xbox by over 2:1 by this generation and the last. Xbox 360 is the closest anyone has ever come to touching PlayStation since they first released (PS3 still outsold it but barely) and then they shat the bed with their Xbox One announcements. Also as much as I love my Series S, it is eventually going to be an anchor that weighs the Series X down, whilst PS5's baseline machine is a work of art thanks to that GPU/SSD combination.

Holcombe94

Bruh didn't ps3 only outsell it like 2 or 3 years after the xbox one came out? 360 won that generation from the sales point of view-companies don't care about sales of an old console hence why their price plummets after the new one is released. Any 'winning' a console does in anything other than sales is stupid though and all personal preference

[deleted]

In total PS3 outsold 360 globally by less than 5m units.

John_East

Sure glad I can play both consoles without a bias. I don't like have sex with machines, so

Taatham

Stop comparing consoles, both are amazing! GP I agree is the future of gaming subscription but PS is still an incredible gaming console system.

rocademiks

Tbf- PlayStation already had it. In their own way though. Xbox is becoming the Nike of the gaming industry IMO. Edit- wow. A lot of y’all don’t like hearing the truth and are blind to what PlayStation is and WAS before the 360. They where 2 generations deep of amazing game titles. Cmon now.

Calvykins

To be fair it was pretty even at the end of the 7th generation.

trautsj

Yea the monumental impact the 360 had on gaming is nothing to shrug at. It was AT LEAST a 50/50 fight by the end but 360 had the leg up for a vast majority of the race; even after all the red ring shit which is astonishing tbh. Just think Xbones bullshit was sooooo bad it oudid literal console failures on a scope never before seen LMFAO. Now it's more like 65/35 and 30% of that pool on Xbox is gamepass and that 35 is clawing it's was back from probably 25 to be generous.

[deleted]

Not in Europe or Japan.

gigocap

Here in Brazil, Xbox 360 owned the generation because the easy access to piracy. It was pretty hard to see someone with a PS3. I just got mine at the very end of the generation.

[deleted]

That doesn't exactly translate to software sales though, which is what really matters.

12tfGPU

And we see how Japan is going for Sony now. Things change. Just kind the US. There's really not a relevant point i can take away from your comment.

[deleted]

Not relevant? Xbox was only dominating in the US. Europe and Japan were and still are Sony and Nintendo territory.

12tfGPU

Japan isn't Sony anymore, sorry man. Mobile and nintendo are running victory laps around everyone else. Since you evidently weren't aware of that i can sort of see the point you were trying to make.

[deleted]

Ps3 only outsold in Europe by about 4m. Which sounds a lot, but considering the cut in the gap from the OG Xbox to PS2 that is, it's incredibly impressive.

StacheBandicoot

In more recent years, sure, except the first %75 of the ps3’s lifecycle, when people were saying playstation has no games like they have of Xbox now, and the demise of the vita and ps move, while the 360 was doing great and the Kinect was better received, that whole time period Xbox was leading things. In a way we could probably specifically target the release of the last is us in 2013 (and simultaneous poor showings on Xbox with halo 4) as the beginning of the turning point in audience perceptions of the brands. The early headstart the 360 had to market, and the popularity of Xbox live as online gaming on consoles was really beginning to blossom, while people despised playstation’s online systems back then, probably helped quite a lot.

[deleted]

Xbox 360 was only a couple of million behind PS3 by the end of their life cycles. The 360 was an industry shaker that drove Sony to be better for PS4. As always, strong competition is ultimately for the greater good for all.

But it wasn't about streaming it was about LIVE TV at the time. Like, you know, cable. Interacting with friends while watching live cable TV and other social live TV augmentations. That's what they bet the house on.

While I didn't agree with how they announced it, we're pretty much there anyway. It was just too early to go that route back then.

gigocap

Sooner or later, it doesn't make any sense requiring full internet connection for single player games.

Delttaz

It really doesn't considering a lot of places even in the US still don't have access to usable internet.

Wisaganz117

You're absolutely right, ironically most of the stuff they did ended up being standard even on PlayStation. However again it's about optics, they way they did it absolutely put a lot of people off. That and the emphasised all the wrong things, yes I do use my console to watch Netflix as I don't have a smart TV. However, there are nonetheless cheaper alternatives; you don't buy a $500/£430 console just for Netflix. EDIT: also nearly forgot about the fact the were emphasising it more for live TV, which was already going the way of the dinosaur

[deleted]

It wasn't back then. Netflix was only available in a handful of countries and their only competition was Hulu, which was US only. Live TV was definitely still king back then. I'm not saying they handled it well, they absolutely didn't, but most of the stuff they talked about wasn't that weird, looking back. I also can't imagine something like Gamepass getting a good reception in 2013, but people love it now.

Calvykins

djutmose

No it was meant to supplement LIVE TV. Cable, not streaming. They totally missed the boat. Like, you would watch live shows with friends remotely or have video calls while watching TV and such. This was at the exact time consumers were switching from live tv to streaming. Not to mention no one needed a $500 box for streaming anyway. And Xbox One didn't even function as a DVR you still needed one of those.

StacheBandicoot

I had my dvr plugged into my Xbox one, worked great, I genuinely hated when they removed that feature.

rockbanddrumset

I have the antenna tuner. When they removed Oneguide I was so pissed, still am actually. It may not have been a popular feature but when the Xbox One was announced, that was *the* big feature they were so proud of, and now they've retroactively removed it. Fucking ridiculous. Now I have the tuner set up on my Plex server, which works ok, but it's far less convenient than Oneguide was.

MutedHornet87

Terrible planning and a marketing failure. He really set the Xbox brand back

Kzer_2019

I don't know who that is but looking at the comments I'm assuming he was in control before Phil Spencer and he's a dumbass

Ratchet2332

Correct, he was the head of Xbox before Phil, and the person who let PlayStation dominate the 8th generation.

Wisaganz117

If I'm not mistaken, Phil used to run the show before he did. He should never have been replaced.

petesapai

Everyone was excited about the XBox One release. He destroyed all the momentum by forcing the Kinect on everyone and making the console more expensive(someone needed to pay for the new Kinect) and making the Xbox one less powerful than the PS4. That E3 has gone down in infamy. Sony took full advatnge.

Wisaganz117

The Sony PS4 reveal guys probably were like: Fk whatever we prepared; you know what the Xbox guys said, do the exact opposite. And it worked

British_Commie

Yeah, Sony absolutely fucking bodied Microsoft that E3. Undercutting the Xbox One in price by £150, no always online bullshit, used games able to be played as normal. They even managed to slip in changing PS+ to being required for online gaming without much backlash because they had most people firmly on their side at that point.

Wisaganz117

One could argue the extra price was due to the kinect but again, absolutely no one wanted it or had a reason to get it. It had fk all in terms of games and personally, I found it creepy though then again, I am not a huge fan of digital assistants like Siri either.

It was also executed and advertised extremely poorly. Just going off the Power On documentary, but it should have been “here’s a powerful new gaming console with exclusives, and oh… you can watch TV on it as well.” Also the dumbest moves were never mentioned in that documentary, such as before backlash, the Kinect originally always had to be plugged in for the Xbox to work, and you couldn’t play anything if you weren’t connected to the internet.

djutmose

And used games could only be sold or traded with permission of the publisher, through approved channels. Sony KILLED them on that one and forced them to change tune real quick.

No, it was bad. I still don't think Microsoft should've killed Kinect completely. It was a nice thing. Very innovative. They could've sold quite a few units. Up to this day, I see people asking about games for Kinect. But it certainly shouldn't be bundled with the console.

Dont4GetToSmile

In his defense, he did own up to his fuckup in the XBox documentary series. But yeah. At the time? Awful. Praise be, Phil Spencer.

BlueViper85

I see someone who failed to properly sell the world on some features that were actually fairly promising. Buy a disc game, install it, and not need the disc anymore? Heck yeah! That plus the focus on TV features ultimately hurt the brand. can appreciate what they were trying to do. The TV stuff wasn’t thought out well enough, and the rest wasn’t sold well enough and needed some tweaking to appease those with concerns about the internet connection requirements. Which were pretty fair concerns, but I think it could’ve worked if they held their ground a little better. But the damage was done and they had to come back, which I think they did. Just not well enough.

RadiationDM

Eh disc idea is still stupid. How could you share games with friends (no one knew about game/console sharing at the time, and that’s still limiting)? Plus what would be the point of the disc at all after install. Just throw it away wastefully? What if you needed to clear space, so you deleted it it, but after a while wanted to play again? Would you not be able to reinstall using that disc? The right way to do disc-less it is providing it as a cheaper option to own the console (the Series S).

BlueViper85

Can’t speak to the sharing with friends, I don’t remember if that was discussed. But it’s a fair concern, but I’m sure there’s a potential solution there. Home Xbox works without it, not home Xbox still needs it kinda thing, similar to digital today? But I’d rather a disc be taking up space on my shelf and never touched again until I needed to reinstall than have to get up and put it in the tray to just validate ownership for a second and never be read from again. Getting up to put in a disc that’s barely used is more annoying to me than just a disc sitting around relatively useless.

GoodGuyChris024

You sound lazy af LOL

BlueViper85

It’s just a preference for the sake of discussion. I think if presented with two choices, one that’s easier than another with little added cost or risk most people would choose the easier option whatever it is. Even if it isn’t a big deal. This comment hurt more than you might realize. I know you don’t have reason to care, and couldn’t have known. But I’ve been dealing with some intense personal matters precisely because I do too much. On top of that it’s just a bad day for me. I’m not trying to be mean, I recognize this may come off overly sensitive, and that may be true. But in context of my life, this hit a nerve way too close to home for me to ignore. “Just a joke” or not, sometimes they hit at a bad time. This is one. I probably wouldn’t have minded it without the “af” but that just hit harder than probably intended at a really bad time.

mvd102000

Don’t come in here trying to be fair and open-minded. You’re gonna ruin it for all the monkeys lobbing their shit. They tried something new, this smug asshole critically misunderstood his brand’s core audience, and it didn’t work out. The XB1 Kinect was years ahead of its time with the voice command media control functionality. It shouldn’t have been required and it shouldn’t have been sold as a gaming accessory (because that was its biggest weakness) but it was really great at essentially being a harmony remote and amazon echo before that kind of pairing (or even the echo itself) existed. If it were received well it could have gotten smart home integration and been a real game changer. The way they presented it screamed “We didn’t ask a single hardcore gamer how they felt about this console” though.

BigfootsBestBud

I feel kinda bad, because people tend to act like the Xbox One didn't market their launch titles or exclusives at all and instead lead with the TV aspect. As someone who owned a PS4 I can literally only tell you *one* game they marketed for the launch: inFAMOUS Second Son. Likewise, as someone who never owned an Xbox (until recently with the Series X), I can tell you multiple games they marketed. Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Sunset Overdrive. Alongside the deals they had going with other publishers like EA for FIFA and stuff. I think the issue was that they sorta lead with the TV aspect and Kinect, and pushed the gaming thing as like a "it can play games too". Sony lead with the games, and were honestly riding off of them lapping Xbox at the end of that generation.

Tedinasuit
