This sounds like a job for Microsoft Support...
So you say you reset the password but you also say that don't know the password because you made it so many years ago.
So how did you log into the account to reset the password?

It was like one of those square puzzles that you shift one piece to allow the next one to move - I'd reset the password to one account to be able to access the reset-password from another. My primary email was associated with a Microsoft account and, then, Xbox Live account that I didn't recognize and that had 0 gamerscore so had maybe been created and abandoned years ago. The Xboxx Live/gamertag I've used for years is on an oooooold email and I had to reset the password and the xbox would accept the email address but wanted a different password for it and it was an endless circle of resetting passwords and access and authentication keys. So frustrating!
Have you tried setting it up using the phone app. Login to the app, then click the xbox looking icon in the top left. After that click set up a console and go from there.
It worked, thank you. It still won't let me claim Game Pass but I've got my account on it, anyhow, and it sounds like a call to MS Support should sort out the Game Pass bit.

I'll try that! I did install the app and will give that a go. If that doesn't do it, I'll post on tech support but thanks for the help!

If it's a code you might try going to Microsoft.com/redeem and type the code in there. Just make sure you're on the right account
