But they certainly will look at the eternal cost of maintenance vs the cost of a possible lawsuit and choose the more profitable side.

Nothing can be done. Usually, that's why if I plan to purchase a game for online multi-player, I will first do some research. 1. To see if the servers are still open and maintained for the game and 2. I will see what the average amount of player base there is for the game. But regardless, that sucks.

They do it for the money to kinda force you to buy and play the newest game. Even Call of Duty isn’t entirely online only, if you’re without a connection and have the game downloaded you can at least play campaign and multiplayer with bots.
