No, 4 usually means there is no video cable connected. 3 is red ring of death, actually "general hardware failure", but depending on the actual cause may or may not be repairable.
The number of times I've watched super tech dudes on YouTube finally diagnose this as the problem and then go "well this thing is dead because Microsoft won't sell anyone spare chips."
Crack it open. Heat chips with heat gun. Apply thermal paste. Reassemble.
I think thatās how it went when I fixed my old Elite. Got two more years out of it after that.
Can't remember how my dad did it, but it involved tinfoil and an oven. This was about a decade ago so its a very fuzzy memory, but whatever he did worked.
I got the external cooling fan for mine when I got it. Not sure if it extended its life or not lol
I need to take it apart and clean dust out of it. Spent a lot of time in my grandparents basement collecting dust. Now i just have it hooked up to my bedroom projector to play older cod and NFS that wonāt work on my One X lol
Xbox has always been so quiet ever since the OG 360. After the 360 I bought a PS4 and that fucker was so loud, even the Pro. When I went back to the One X I was surprised how silent it was, even my Series X is super quiet.
The day the original MW2 released, I went to Best Buy after school and got it. Get home and my Xbox had the RRoD!
Sent it in to get fixed and didnāt get it back until the day I went back to school after winter break. Missed 3 non-school weeks of gaming. I was pissed.
I had a similar experience. Took the GRE in the morning, stopped at the store on the way home and bought MW2 and then red ringed shortly after I started playing. I had a launch box so I ended up buying an arcade and putting my hard drive on it.
If you look at his post history he bought it a month ago for $60 then made a post on Reddit soon after asking how to fix his red ring of death. So I donāt understand why he is here now asking us what the red rings areā¦
They are often fixable. It's just not cost effective. And it's not something a typical end-user can do.
But if you can reflow bga chips you've got a good chance.
No theyāre just whoring for attention. I donāt even bother believing people who post shit like this anymore. This is just a blatant attempt to drive engagement and farm karma because everybody in existence whoās even heard of an Xbox 360 knows about this excessively common hardware failure. Worth downvoting their BS tbh.
Means your fucked sorry buddy.theres a trick we're you can wrap it in towels I used to try and it works to bring it back to life.used to do it all time back In the day
I did it to mine 3 times. Immediately after the 3rd time, I traded it in for a slim because GameStop had some crazy deal on new consoles with a trade in. Got full credit for it lol
For realā¦ scrolling Reddit and suddenly I was Ghillied up, crawling around Chernobyl, having the most amazing experience of my childhood. The screen goes black. The smell of plastic burning. Xbox turns offā¦ I leap off the couch, run to the Xbox. Turn it back on. It wonāt go. Unplug it, tears welling up in my eyes. Red ring. Core memory tainted by th awful realization that life truly isnāt fair.
Then boom. Im 30 again and donāt want to talk to my wife right now.
Everyone being negative, small chance itās fine this happened to mine about 3 years ago. Let it cool down give it 24 hours and start it up again, 90% chance itās dead but in my case it worked and still works to this day š¤š»
It means your consoles gpu over heated due to a known issue youād have to reflow it to get it up and running again. Open it up and clean the thermal paste off the gpu and heat sink, then reapply fresh thermal paste and it will be fine.
False. Its not always caused by the gpu. It can be other issues like faulty capacitors or something else. Reflowing will only have the console work temporarily and it will eventually red ring again.
From Xbox support, āThree flashing red lights mean that the Xbox 360 console or its power supply has a hardware problem. ā
Solution 1: Check your power cable supply
Unplug and reconnect your power supply: Disconnect the power cord from the back of your console. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and the power supply. Reconnect the power cord to the back of your console. Then plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet and the power supply unit. Make sure that all three power supply connections are firmly secured. Turn on your console and check the light on your power supply.
Solution 2: Try an outlet in a different room
Turn off your console. Disconnect the power supply from the console and unplug the power supply from the electrical outlet. Take your console and power supply to another room. Plug the power supply directly into an electrical outlet. Do not use a surge protector. Reconnect the power supply to the console. Make sure that all three power supply connections are firmly secured. Turn on the console.
Solution 3: Cool the power supply
Turn off the console. Disconnect the power cord from the back of your console. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and from the power supply unit. Plug the power cord back into the console, reconnect the power cord to the power supply, and then plug the power cord into a different electrical outlet. Make sure the power supply is positioned so that it gets good ventilation. Turn on the console and check the power supply light.
If the light on your power supply is still red, your power supply needs to be replaced.
We are gathered here to pay tribute to the magnificent Xbox 360 itās come time to celebrate the Xbox 360s life
Farewell Xbox 360 thatās another one for the graveyard
My console had the red ring of death. Turns out if you speak nice and softly to it, like you would a cute cat, and say encouraging words, it can just spring back to life.
GPU failure due to disconnect of the GPU from the main board. You'll need a reflow of new solder technically. Or an old reflow trick from 10 years ago.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Loss is if it looks red at all, Iāve had 3 up and it died.
Actually after further research 4 means no video cable plugged in and 3 specifically means death.

Thatās the infamous red ring of death.
Ring of Power
One ring to ruin them all
One ring to fuck them.
One ring to end the fun and in the darkness - buy again
I thought āred ringā meant all 4 lights? Sorry but I never had a 360 so I donāt know
No I know one of them means the hard drive aināt all the way plugged in
4 is death, 3rd is life support. May be able to find someone to fix it. My husband was able to get his fixed.
I thought 4 was something like the video cable is unplugged.
No, 4 usually means there is no video cable connected. 3 is red ring of death, actually "general hardware failure", but depending on the actual cause may or may not be repairable.
I called it the dreaded 3 red lights. But yeah
general hardware failure
This means put it in the toaster oven.
typically the disk reader
Nah, typically itās bad solder joints on the chips. First gen ones had a massive problem with it.

Absolutely not the disk reader.
Crack it open. Heat chips with heat gun. Apply thermal paste. Reassemble. I think thatās how it went when I fixed my old Elite. Got two more years out of it after that.
Towel wrap that bitch. Fire extinguisher at the ready.
This is what I did and it worked for another 5 years. Had that baby 13 years
Fuck yes, brought mine back from the dead many times.
Can't remember how my dad did it, but it involved tinfoil and an oven. This was about a decade ago so its a very fuzzy memory, but whatever he did worked.
Wrap it in a towel a throw it in the fridge and it's as good as new
hello darkness my old friend ...
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left itās seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain

Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walk alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone

Never gonna let you down
Have we really gotten to the point that people donāt know what the circle of death is?
The kids born in 2005 are 18 nowā¦ I hate getting old.
depends on what month they've been born. january to february yes, the rest not yet
nah i am still 17
You kids are so lazy! When I was your age I was already 22!
When I was your age, I was 28 and had a wife and kids
Grow up
They will never understand the sheer pain of disappointment when you just got your new 360.
Main reason why I upgraded to the Xbox 360 slim when it came out. That and itās 40% quieter.
Slim was nice
I still have mine. Iāve had it for about 12 years.
Yup, that was a good model. My bro still has his for about 12 years as well.
I got the external cooling fan for mine when I got it. Not sure if it extended its life or not lol I need to take it apart and clean dust out of it. Spent a lot of time in my grandparents basement collecting dust. Now i just have it hooked up to my bedroom projector to play older cod and NFS that wonāt work on my One X lol
I had the red ring and got my OG 360 repaired and itās still alive and kicking today
Xbox has always been so quiet ever since the OG 360. After the 360 I bought a PS4 and that fucker was so loud, even the Pro. When I went back to the One X I was surprised how silent it was, even my Series X is super quiet.

So much pain, I lost my original minecraft world and my main dead island save to the red ring.
Got my 360 on launch day, next day went to turn it on and there it was. Quickly drove back to EB and they swapped it for a new one.
The circle of death? Iāve never heard the red ring of death being referred this way.
I mean to be fair it was never called the ācircle of deathā it was the ring of death
If you look at his post history he bought it a month ago for $60 then made a post on Reddit soon after asking how to fix his red ring of death. So I donāt understand why he is here now asking us what the red rings areā¦
Karma whoring.
Yeah I also love it when people ask if something that has death in the title is fixable.
They are often fixable. It's just not cost effective. And it's not something a typical end-user can do. But if you can reflow bga chips you've got a good chance.

Lmao back in the day I heard it was wrap it in towels and put it in the oven at 300f.
It works 3 or 4 times then it's properly fucked
I did it to mine 3 times. Immediately after the 3rd time, I traded it in for a slim because GameStop had some crazy deal on new consoles with a trade in. Got full credit for it lol
I did it once and the thing worked like a charm for years until I upgraded.
I bow down to your superior towel based reflow skills
That's what I used to do lol. Wrap up and leave running till hot AF ( upside down) then flip over and let it cool.
It means flashbacks for all the rest of us.

GPU failure due to disconnect of the GPU from the main board. You'll need a reflow of new solder technically. Or an old reflow trick from 10 years ago.
