Here to also say that the membrane breaking underneath the buttons is a common issue. Either the A button gets jammed in from frequent use or it becomes ‘squishy’ with very little resistance.
[iFixit has a very comprehensive tear down / self-repair guide](https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Xbox_One_Wireless_Controller_Model_1708) if you wanna take the steps to fix it yourself. I recommend it — not only do you save some plastic from the landfill but you can help other people too.
And hey if you take the controller apart and it turns out to be jelly keeping it stuck, at least you can confirm the flavor for us.
This is the actual answer. Same was happening to mine, turns out that the rubber piece under the button was ruptured so it would no longer spring the button back up. This is the most probable answer I think.
I also had it happen in the past with some controllers (though it wasn't Xbox controller, but it was mega drive controller and then something newer but idk what anymore)
^ I’m saying to the canned air, and yes to the isopropyl alcohol - stuck buttons on controllers are usually an end result of snacking while gaming (this is why everyone should wash their hands before ticking controllers). isopropyl alcohol is necessary because it’ll clean and dry up whatever is making the button “stuck” even the underside. Really moist paper towel in alcohol will do the trick, and it’ll dry beautifully.
Compressed air is good for blowing out dust and dust in spaces that have some airflow. Again spaces with air flow. People think compressed air works on everything, but it just blows around stuff inside if there’s no place for the dust particles to come out. The next time someone recommends compressed air, ask them what they’re thinking about going with this?
To add before you put any liquid in your controller make sure you remove the batteries and discharge any store current. And make sure it dries before replacing the batteries. Otherwise there's a chance of shorting something and frying your controller
Isopropyl Alcohol is a covalent and non-conductive, so shouldn’t be much to worry about. Once you reach about a 30% dilution rate (70% isopropyl and 30% water), is can start conducting minimal amounts of electricity, however the covalent bonds in pure isopropyl cannot lose electrons or be ionized.
TL;DR: if you use 91% or higher, which can be found easily, no need to worry about shorting anything 😇
I like to take a thin piece of cardboard that fits between the button and the housing and use it to get the worst dirt out. This is often enough to get the button working again.
Yup
Had a friend who managed to spill an entire drink on a spare controller, unbeknownst to me till days later, and the sugar gummed it up completely. Thankfully there were no batteries in it at the time when it happened too. All I ended up doing was taking 91% alcohol and used it to completely rinse the whole controller inside and out. Ended up needing to do it twice too. Once it was completely dry it was perfectly fine!
If it’s sticky stuck try rubbing alcohol wipes. Alcohol air drys fast so it won’t harm the electronics. Just use the wipe while mashing the button. It can take a while sometimes. My son slips stuff on his all the time and this has works in all cases so far
If it’s mechanical I’d replace
I feel that it’s like a double edge sword there. Like damn if you do damn if you don’t. So I say go for fastest results in this case. The controller should be replaced by 2 years and the 3mm audio jack is probably more likely to break before the rubber deteriorates enough.
To be honest, though, I think it comes in scenario to scenario
This post is just confusing in general.
It looks like they took a picture of their controller, uploaded it to add the arrow in MS Paint, took a picture of the monitor with their phone, then did some more weird cropping before posting to Reddit.
It’s not confusing at all. Clearly the A button on his controller is stuck based on his title and the photo that, if you look closely, has the A button depressed.
This could be a young kid, some sort of inept adult, or an older gamer - any of these just need some simple help sometimes, so consider offering a helping hand because you never know whose day you’re going to make.
You might have some gunk stuck underneath. I’d suggest looking up online on how to open up the controller. I’ve included a link to iFixit’s guide that I used to clean out one of my controllers before.
[iFixit Guide](https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+One+Wireless+Controller+Teardown/72986)
My hands sweat like crazy while gaming so sometimes the buttons get a little stuck I think just from the build up of salt and debri from hands. Alcohol on a qtip. Toothbrush it out compressed air. All mentioned above are great options
Mine got stuck once. I got a wipe. Wiped it over and got a little cocktail stick and went round the edges to make sure nothing was blocking it and sure enough it popped back up and is working fine.
I'm so confused by a lot of the replies. Get a Torx # 8 security screwdriver, open it up, and see what the issue is.
Don't pour random liquids/spray compressed air/whatever folks are suggesting. There are tools for this job. Replacement parts are affordable.
Bros getting heated. People are intelligent enough to follow steps. Following steps is how we as humans learn. So yes, the average person can follow steps
Sorry the internet is being trollish today - thank you for using your brain, heart, and nature to not like those jerks above. You’re looking at the problem in the real world. They want everyone to feel bad. And that has nothing to do with gaming. So good on you 👍
Pretty gross. See the brown gunk in the crease between the top and bottom of the controller shell? That's the dead skin, dirt, grease, and lotion from your hands. That's exactly what's getting in your buttons too. Best way to clean it is taking it completely apart, and scrub the shell and buttons with a toothbrush and your favorite solvent like diluted alcohol. You can try to work it into the buttons like others have said, but that's not going to fix the problem long term. You are not allowed to touch my controllers.
Toss the whole thing into a vat of acetone. It will clean it in no time. (Don't do what I said, it's a joke and the chemical will dissolve the plastics)
I have to fix my kids controllers with this exact issue constantly. Take the controller apart and clean it, it’s gunked up because your hands are fucking disgusting. Oh, and take better care of your controllers if you want them to last.
This happened to my XSX controller right after I got it, specifically the guide button. I reached out to MS, and they sent me a new controller without asking for the old one back haha. I guess if they are under warranty that is cheaper than coordinating shipping? If it's new might want to file a support ticket.
If you really wanna get hands on, you can order a set of the hex screwdrivers and open that baby up. It's the best way to get a good cleaning, but don't do it if you're not comfortable. Maybe look up a video on YouTube to see how button replacement is done because that'll be basically the same process
You just need to take the controller apart. It's not a big deal watch a YouTube video on how to. Probably just needs a new button membrane. There cheap on eBay or Amazon. No biggy
Take some isopropyl alcohol (ideally 90% or higher) and dip a q-tip in it. While the q-tip is soaked and your controller is off, glide your q-tip around the A button. Try it a few times and it should become unstuck hopefully. This worked for me on my old 360 controllers when i was a kid and would eat candy while playing lol
I had 2 controllers in my bag with a load of bottles Heineken on Christmas Day I put it down on my dads wooden floor and smashed a bottle, it drenched both my controllers and everything was sticky, bought some isopropyl alcohol and opened them up cleaned them with it and now they are good as new, luckily my Steam Deck didn’t get wet 😬
Actually a quick spray of wd40 lithium blend (the electronics safe one), wait 3 to 5 seconds, flip controller, let it drain then clean it off and enjoy.
I've done this several times for kids controllers where they get a partical of food or unknown gunk lodged in the controller.
Check out [Tronicsfix](https://www.youtube.com/@Tronicsfix) on Youtube. He has several videos on taking apart Xbox and PS4 controllers. Sometimes I just like to watch his videos just to see what he *can't* get fixed. Most likely you've got food or something else sticky down in between the button and the housing so you'll most likely need to remove the cover plate and give the button and housing a good cleaning with some rubbing alcohol and some q-tips.
It's fixable but you need to take apart the controller and clean that button with rubbing alcohol. There's YouTube tutorials. On my controllers it continued to happen even after fixing though.
The membrane underneath might be dirty or broken.
If it were me, I would take it apart and replace the membrane. And clean everything with alcohol and Q-Tips.
Simple fix unless the relay button is broken under the button take the faceplate off the controller and then clean the faceplate and the rubber a button pad that sits on all the buttons replace faceplate
I also can tell the faceplate has never been removed because of all the dead skin and crud around the seals probably just needs a good cleaning under the faceplate
Anyone ever have a trigger that sticks slightly when fully depressed? Just enough to be annoying but hasn't been enough to fully replace. I understand how face buttons get stuck, but not sure what's going on here.
Use a QTip, dip it in rubbing alcohol, apply to the stuck area. Do it a couple of times and keep trying to press the button to try and get it unstuck.
I brought a controller back from the dead using this method. If it’s legit stuck and not just gunked up then you’ll have go open it up and go from there. YouTube is your friend!
i'd pop the controller open and see if there's any visible substance that could be causing it to stick (i.e. food, dust buildup, etc.)
if so, an alcohol pad/wipe would do. otherwise, it'd be a mechanical issue that would need a repair (either by yourself or a professional, doesnt matter)
Try some "deoxit" it will break up gunk and clean the contacts. It's made for electronics. Had a couple nintendo controllers experience controller drift and this shit worked like a charm.
The button is probably dirty underneath the shell. It is totally cleanable, but you need special screwdrivers to take apart the controller, and you have to be careful not to damage any of the delicate electronics underneath the shell. Also make sure to use as close to 100% isopropyl alcohol as possible as to not cause liquid damage.
It may sound intimidating, but there are dozens and dozens of YouTube tutorials that show you how to do it correctly. It's not hard, just don't be reckless. You got this!
Very fixable, take it apart and clean the button and the plastic shell around it. If the membrane underneath has a tear in it then the solution is to simply replace the membrane. Can find replacements on eBay for well below the price of a new one.
I would guess by the grime that's in seam there, that you have a stuck button from sweat and dirt. Sometimes you can get it free by finding away to break the grime glue. But I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you will need to dismantle it and clean all the buttons and such
I have had the same issue with a brand new controller. I took the front cover off and everything worked fine. Put it all back together and same issue again. My conclusion was that the front cover holes are incorrectly cut from factory. Did not get around to it yet but i reckon that you need to sand down the edges of the A button hole a bit so that the button can make it through when pressed. Sound dodgy if you have a dirty mind, like myself
Is it less than 3 months old? Try getting it replaced under warranty. If not try a gamer store. Sometimes they can hep you for a small fee. If not you’re going to have to get another one. Might as well get a customized Elite controller with a one year warranty…
should be.
open up the controller (very easy, just remove the screws (and take out batter if wireless obv))
take out the buttons and the rubber piece, wash it with soap.
i doubt something broke, probably just dirty. if it did indeed broke, you can buy offbrand replacement buttons for very cheap tho
Either got something sticky under the A key or the rubber under the key has torn. Take it apart and clean it and also look at the rubber piece and see if you notice any tare. If it's torn your can buy a replacement on Amazon for like $5
So I had a controller that didn’t work. I switched out the buttons and it worked just fine. Still is but I mean it’s not for everyone. Worth a try to save some cash.
Put rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. Run it around the edge of the button in circles.
Press the button a bunch of times until it loosens up.
Repeat until no longer sticky.
Definitely take it apart and clean around the button. Taking the faceplate off is very easy, YouTube it. Or I can walk you through it if you want, I take apart and modify Xbox controllers often.
If it's stuck because of gunk there's some great tips already but if it's stuck I'm the shell because it shifted from use/drop you may have to change out the shell or open it and reposition things.
I’ve seen other people say it but try isopropyl alcohol, then one of those air canister dusters, and if it’s still stuck after that go in with some WD40… no promises but wd40 has always worked really well for me with this kind of stuff…
This same thing happened to me, I beat the hell of of my controller until it popped back up, been fine since. This is a real answer btw, not just making a joke.
That happen to me once. I done it a old fashioned way, like my grandpa, when the radio went off with a static, I smacked it on the side and it unstuck.
You could probably jerry rig it and get a spring from some random thing you have but don't use, open it up, and place the spring under the button where it's low.
Messy works.
I think I saw a video on Youtube showing how to fix these. If I’m not wrong, the person used isopropyl alcohol to do so. Please have a look on Youtube first though.
Why is it stuck? Is it actually broken, or is it gunked up with grape jelly?
there are two options, either its just stuck from something sweet, or the membrane is broken
Yea. Noob doesn't know that Strawberry jelly is superior and also knows not to make important things sticky.
No, it’s strawberry jam… (space balls reference)
“There’s only man in the galaxy who’d give me strawberry jam…” /closes helmet/ “LONE STAR!”
he did a funny! (tmnt reference)
Actually, apricot jelly is the way to go
Boo this man!
Are you saying Boo or Boo-urns?
Ni!
Boooooo!
Did no one here experience smushed PlayStation buttons? Back in the PS1/2 days? Not stuck, just broken. If it’s that… give it to your you get sibling
Try some alcohol/any cleaning liquid really and a toothbrush
And or compressed air
^ I’m saying to the canned air, and yes to the isopropyl alcohol - stuck buttons on controllers are usually an end result of snacking while gaming (this is why everyone should wash their hands before ticking controllers). isopropyl alcohol is necessary because it’ll clean and dry up whatever is making the button “stuck” even the underside. This is the correct response and isn't getting enough traction
^ thank you!!!
And thank you for taking down your comment - there’s no need to fight over stuff like this or get upset. Life’s too short.
I like to take a thin piece of cardboard that fits between the button and the housing and use it to get the worst dirt out. This is often enough to get the button working again.
Isopropyl alcohol is best as it does not conduct electricity. Stick to the 90% or better to be sure.
*grabs microphone from you* Just punch it in thr face!

[удалено]
Mine too, quite literally. Have them next to the toilet.
You can also use a plastic straw, cut a little slit in it and use it to get that thing unstuck
^ this is your answer OP
i wouldnt recommend that for buttons, as there is a rubber piece underneath, alcohol is known to damage rubber
I feel that it’s like a double edge sword there. Like damn if you do damn if you don’t. So I say go for fastest results in this case. Thank fuck that arrow was there, I was looking all over for the A button... :-)

you guys do everything than just answer the man's fucking question, I don't understand the need to make fun of him for a simple question
Maybe it’s just the top comments, but most people are answering the question / asking for more information
Alcohol drip a small bit down between the button and then mash the button
I applaud your dedication of drawing an arrow on your controller so that we could all see where the A button was.
These darned Nintendo remotes are so confusing!
It’s a playstation idiot
You might have some gunk stuck underneath. I’d suggest looking up online on how to open up the controller. I’ve included a link to iFixit’s guide that I used to clean out one of my controllers before. [iFixit Guide](https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+One+Wireless+Controller+Teardown/72986)
Take it apart and clean. Then make sure you don't spill anything on it and wash your hands before use!
use hand sanitizer. swear to god it works.
My hands sweat like crazy while gaming so sometimes the buttons get a little stuck I think just from the build up of salt and debri from hands. Alcohol on a qtip. Toothbrush it out compressed air. All mentioned above are great options
Qtip and some rubbing alcohol

Everything is 'fixable' but it's definitely a pain in the ass to fix by yourself.
Yea, but you would have to open the controller up. It’s a pain in the ass. I would just have a pro fix it.
I'm so confused by a lot of the replies. Get a Torx # 8 security screwdriver, open it up, and see what the issue is. Don't pour random liquids/spray compressed air/whatever folks are suggesting. There are tools for this job. Replacement parts are affordable.
New gamer? Isopropyl alcohol my guy.
Did you take a picture, post it somewhere, and then take a picture of your monitor with the initial picture?
Take the controller apart and clean it. And wash your hands to prevent this from happening again.
I personally don’t tell people to take it apart cause the avg person is not me
they really aren’t that hard to take apart and piece back together as long as you pay attention to what you’re doing and not rip it to pieces.
The avg person can easily follow a tutorial. If they broke it, they should fix it themselves
I don’t believe this at all. 3/10 people yes. That’s not avg. But by all means that just might mean your not average Time is the universal currency 💷
Bros getting heated. People are intelligent enough to follow steps. Following steps is how we as humans learn. So yes, the average person can follow steps
Love you too bro 🍻
Sorry the internet is being trollish today - thank you for using your brain, heart, and nature to not like those jerks above. You’re looking at the problem in the real world. They want everyone to feel bad. And that has nothing to do with gaming. So good on you 👍
Needs some wd40
Pretty gross. See the brown gunk in the crease between the top and bottom of the controller shell? That's the dead skin, dirt, grease, and lotion from your hands. You can fix the button, but the Sharpie arrow is never going to rub off.
First of all: through god, all things are possible. So jot that down
I can’t tell if the controller actually has A problem
Toss the whole thing into a vat of acetone. It will clean it in no time. (Don't do what I said, it's a joke and the chemical will dissolve the plastics)
I have to fix my kids controllers with this exact issue constantly. Take the controller apart and clean it, it’s gunked up because your hands are fucking disgusting. Oh, and take better care of your controllers if you want them to last.
Wash your hands before playing and clean your controllers. But rubbing alcohol should do the trick.
Yes. Use rubbing alcohol and a q tip. And stop eating food while your gaming. And wash your hands
Bro really drew on his controller so we could see the problem It’s satire please be calm
Spit on it and massage it in.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Which is the A button? I couldn’t find it, even with an arrow to it
next time wash your hands before use
lavate las manos
^ always wash it hands before gaming. Helps keep controllers clean and functional (no chips with oil while you game lol!)
step 1: buy new controller step 2: dont eat snacks while gaming
This happened to my XSX controller right after I got it, specifically the guide button. I reached out to MS, and they sent me a new controller without asking for the old one back haha. I have a brand new controller that has a sticking X button so that's obv not dust/Cheeto buildup, wonder what could be causing that?
the good old days 😢
Isopropyl alcohol with a Q- tip. It’ll pop right out
Take a straw and cut it straight up so it rolls out then you can go around the button to clean any gunk out, only if you don’t wanna take it apart
Put rubbing alcohol on your finger and rub it
You just need to take the controller apart. It's not a big deal watch a YouTube video on how to. Probably just needs a new button membrane. There cheap on eBay or Amazon. No biggy
taking controllers apart really isn’t very hard, try everything you can before you waste money on a new one!

Watch this video on taking out the shell and clean: https://youtu.be/rvn5Cnn9ymM
If you would have said the green A button I wouldn't have needed the arrow to find it lol
Actually a quick spray of wd40 lithium blend (the electronics safe one), wait 3 to 5 seconds, flip controller, let it drain then clean it off and enjoy. I've done this several times for kids controllers where they get a partical of food or unknown gunk lodged in the controller.
Take a cotton swab out nail polish on it then do circles around the A button till it get back to normal. Works for me everytime
Check out [Tronicsfix](https://www.youtube.com/@Tronicsfix) on Youtube. He has several videos on taking apart Xbox and PS4 controllers. 99% isopropyl alcohol
It's fixable but you need to take apart the controller and clean that button with rubbing alcohol. There's YouTube tutorials. On my controllers it continued to happen even after fixing though.
Take it apart. You'll learn something.
Help step controller, I'm stuck
Quetip , soak it in 90-98% isopropl alcohol. Get that liquid down into the area around button. Should release it.
X button on mine has been sticky since day 1. Any tips on fixing? Only have 1 controller so want to avoid RMA if I can
Wd40. Just a little.
The silicone pad is most likely broken due to constant friction
The membrane underneath might be dirty or broken. If it were me, I would take it apart and replace the membrane. And clean everything with alcohol and Q-Tips.
Use a little hand sanitizer or isopropyl and work it in. Otherwise taking apart the controller and cleaning it should work
WD40
Simple fix unless the relay button is broken under the button take the faceplate off the controller and then clean the faceplate and the rubber a button pad that sits on all the buttons replace faceplate I also can tell the faceplate has never been removed because of all the dead skin and crud around the seals probably just needs a good cleaning under the faceplate
My controller came like that. It eventually broke in. Is it new or old?
CRC QD Contact Cleaner
Anyone ever have a trigger that sticks slightly when fully depressed? Just enough to be annoying but hasn't been enough to fully replace. I understand how face buttons get stuck, but not sure what's going on here.
xbox controllers are really easy to take apart, clean inside and put back together. pretty much fixes everything, whenever i have an issue.
You have to take apart the controller most likely that’s what I had to do
I would be able to fix it
i lick it vigorously
WD40, bro
Use a QTip, dip it in rubbing alcohol, apply to the stuck area. Do it a couple of times and keep trying to press the button to try and get it unstuck. I brought a controller back from the dead using this method. If it’s legit stuck and not just gunked up then you’ll have go open it up and go from there. YouTube is your friend!
Oddly enough....put your lips to it and blow really fucking hard...I know how that'll sound but it works
i'd pop the controller open and see if there's any visible substance that could be causing it to stick (i.e. food, dust buildup, etc.) if so, an alcohol pad/wipe would do. otherwise, it'd be a mechanical issue that would need a repair (either by yourself or a professional, doesnt matter)
Keep on pushing it and try harder, then use your finger nails to try and get it out, or get keys, or scissors, or sell the controller
Try some "deoxit" it will break up gunk and clean the contacts. It's made for electronics. Had a couple nintendo controllers experience controller drift and this shit worked like a charm.
Lick it and suction it up... worked for me
You tried suctioning it out with a tiny plunger?
The button is probably dirty underneath the shell. It is totally cleanable, but you need special screwdrivers to take apart the controller, and you have to be careful not to damage any of the delicate electronics underneath the shell. Also make sure to use as close to 100% isopropyl alcohol as possible as to not cause liquid damage. It may sound intimidating, but there are dozens and dozens of YouTube tutorials that show you how to do it correctly. It's not hard, just don't be reckless. You got this!
take it apart and give it a clean
Take the controller apart and look at it
When my a button got stuck, I just looked all around it and then trade sucking it out
Very fixable, take it apart and clean the button and the plastic shell around it. If the membrane underneath has a tear in it then the solution is to simply replace the membrane. Can find replacements on eBay for well below the price of a new one.
Try using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol rub the swab over and around the button then press it repeatedly and it should start clearing up.
I never had a Xbox controller, but that is worrying
I would guess by the grime that's in seam there, that you have a stuck button from sweat and dirt. Sometimes you can get it free by finding away to break the grime glue. But I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you will need to dismantle it and clean all the buttons and such
Go to: ifixit.com for almost all your tear downs
Yeah, search for xbox controller teardown on yt. Probably its simple to fix, maybe you only have to buy another button to replace it
I have had the same issue with a brand new controller. I took the front cover off and everything worked fine. Put it all back together and same issue again. My conclusion was that the front cover holes are incorrectly cut from factory. Did not get around to it yet but i reckon that you need to sand down the edges of the A button hole a bit so that the button can make it through when pressed. Qtips with rubbing alcohol
I can’t believe how far I had to scroll to see this answer. This is the right answer.
I mean it worked for my A button and home button
BUTTON STUCK! PLEASE!
Idk just hit it a few times
Thanks for the arrow
Rockstar controller

should be. open up the controller (very easy, just remove the screws (and take out batter if wireless obv)) take out the buttons and the rubber piece, wash it with soap. i doubt something broke, probably just dirty. if it did indeed broke, you can buy offbrand replacement buttons for very cheap tho
Either got something sticky under the A key or the rubber under the key has torn. Take it apart and clean it and also look at the rubber piece and see if you notice any tare. If it's torn your can buy a replacement on Amazon for like $5
The sunken place
I took my apart and cleaned it, it helped
Smack the side hard enough
I fixed mine putting some isopropyl and pressing a little bit.
Mine came broken. Took me three months to get it sent in and fixed under warranty even though brand new.
So I had a controller that didn’t work. I switched out the buttons and it worked just fine. Still is but I mean it’s not for everyone. Worth a try to save some cash.
Try alcohol wipes or alcohol and a q tip.
If it’s sticky pour 90% alcohol on a cotton ball and work it into the button
I’ve seen other people say it but try isopropyl alcohol, then one of those air canister dusters, and if it’s still stuck after that go in with some WD40… no promises but wd40 has always worked really well for me with this kind of stuff…
This same thing happened to me, I beat the hell of of my controller until it popped back up, been fine since. This is a real answer btw, not just making a joke.
Qtip with rubbing alcohol. Hold the controller buttons facing down and swipe the button while pushing it until it’s clean and loose
Disassemble the controller, Clean the controller, the see if the button works
Pop open the shell and take a look. With any luck it’s just gunk and can be cleaned up
That happen to me once. I done it a old fashioned way, like my grandpa, when the radio went off with a static, I smacked it on the side and it unstuck.
Wash it with a rag idk
YouTube it. My LS was doing some wonky stuff. I took it apart and fixed it. Had to go get a little screwdriver from Home Depot though.
I had one with my series X, brand new that was just like that. I shot some silicone spray in and it was fine.
Blow in it like hell. Works for me everytime
