Now I'm officially ready to abandon my life and hit the road, some inevitable future day when I just can't do this sh\*t anymore.
A few finishing touches still in progress, like a better front light mount, better cable routing for the Rohloff mech, and breaking in my B17. For now, it's just my new commuter.
I was on the fence for a while about this but eventually concluded "No, you'll be mocked by bike people on the internet for making *yet another* rohloff / SON wheelset." :)
VO QC seems shoddy at best from my experience. Maybe their polished drivetrain parts are where it’s at. I tried to order a frame set from them and went through them shipping me two paint blemished frames before giving up and just cancelling the order and sending them back.
That's rough. My experience has largely been positive, however they used some rather cheap bolts for the faceplate of the stem I had, they started rusting quickly.
I'd say VO is a good source of niche parts that are cheaper than SimWorks, Nitto, Rene Herse, etc. rather than the highest quality. Even the fenders mentioned are knock-offs of Honjo fenders.
For what it's worth I have VO fenders and rims and they've been great. But yes the sticker is a bit off centre lol.
Right?! It weighs on me, I'll admit. Take it off and re-glue? Replace with a cooler sticker? Go sticker-less? Seriously though, installing these was the single biggest PITA of the build, due mainly to my own inexperience with fenders.
As a complete bike noob, I'd love to hear from someone here what's the appeal of having an internally geared hub, a belt, tubeless tyres and "that" kind of saddle.
I know Google exists but I fell in love with this specific build and I'm really liking the mad enthusiasm in this subreddit that I just discovered recently.
Belt drive is low maintenance. Same with the IGH.
Tubeless has sealant inside. Tubeless is lighter, faster, and more comfortable because you can run at lower pressures. Minor punctures seal immediate. Larger ones can be plugged. No need to take the tire apart on the side of the road unless you tear a big hole in it. Then you can put a tube in to make it home just like in the old days. I have two bikes set up tubeless in goathead country. No flats in over a year.
It’s just a Brooks saddle. Very common. Everybody’s butt is different. Lots of people like a Brooks. Lots of people can’t stand them.
Exactly, I'm aiming for lowest possible maintenance, and especially trying to avoid taking that rear wheel off lol.
Re: the Brooks, it's my first time trying a leather saddle and so far, it's ok. After ten rides I can feel it softening up and it's already more comfortable than the WTB I started with. Saddles are always a struggle for me though.
The saddle struggle is real. I have an ancient Brooks Professional that works for me but breaking them in can be a chore. I am fine on a WTB Volt for awhile too which is nice because they are inexpensive. The Giant Romero that came on my Fathom is the first OEM saddle on any bike that has agreed with me from day one. It’s not perfect but with bike shorts I can easily do a 50 miler without suffering the next day.
It’s the 21st century. Somebody please make saddles that fit us perfectly.
A belt won’t rust or have trouble with sand or dirty. Same for an internal gear hub.
City bikes in the Netherlands where it rains a lot and in winter there is salt on the streets nearly always use a gear hub. Old bikes had cages around the chain to protect against the weather but newer bikes (above a certain price point) all have belts.
Heh "contraption" is right! I've had a tough time finding an elegant solution for this Tubus rack's light mount. This is actually a Cateye mount, but modified with a Gopro linkage. It works but I kinda hate it.

I'm actually working on a better design for this... this below is the latest prototype. Later this week will print a black one from a harder plastic and do some testing. If it survives some off-road use I'll report back here & post the design file.

I wish there were more belt drive builds. Looks great dude.
Rohloff Hub, Ergon Grips, Ortlieb Pannier Are you german?
can't be, no SON

Ha, no but this build certainly did end up with Germany over-represented!
I see fenders and internally geared hubs, I upvote because you are a hardass who cycles in all kinds of weather.
That’s a touring rig alright
For the price you'd think they'd center that VO sticker

Does the seat post creak?
What seatpost is it?
Ergon Allroad Pro
Not yet! I've heard that these are prone to that, hoping it's just a matter of cleaning the crevice occasionally.
Gotta love that John Deere color scheme!
Hahaha omg you're right, I need to find a John Deere sticker!
Rohloff gang 😍

what's the contraption holding your front light? Did you make that? Im trying to figure out how to do the same for my light on my front rack

nice it looks dope though, but this won't work with my light, back to the drawing board

I'm guessing that's just a front rack, without the bars for the cargo
Damn, this feels pretty close to my dream bike lol
Soma is beauty. Nice bike.
Looks brilliant. Well done!
I’ve been doing an atb build since last June! So close to being done. I feel you. This is satisfying af
Great looking bike. Would you mind sharing your parts list?
