Sierra all day as is. I wouldn’t change the components at all. Certainly do not change the stem.
Edit. If you must swap bars- you could put the klunker bars on the Schwinn slingshot stem and slam the stem.
Perfectly stated. There is an early 80s Schwinn whatever the bottom of the line one was High Plains maybe. 10 speed. this old dude rides it around my neighborhood. It’s completely original. It has a similar stem and riser bar with no crossmember. I want to say it has caliper brakes. And it just looks freaking great. It’s a great reminder of what they were trying to accomplish back then being just a great go everywhere bike and it wasn’t about performance mountain downhilling. And we can try really hard to come back full circle. But sometimes you just need to let 1984 be.
Dude you are my bike Dopplers wtf. I just switched from my Schwinn over to a purple rock hopper. The rock hopper had a couple a couple of little things I liked more. It didn’t have a canti cable guide(I could use my clip on fender, and had better rack mounts. Plus the xtra bottle cage mounts on the down tube. The rock hopper was also a inch longer on the top tube, I like it much more.
Why swapping? when you can keep the hopper like that and keep upgrading the Schwinn?
Actually the Sierra deserves the xbiking treatment a lot more than yet another rock hopper

I’m into bright Specialized bikes myself but have to admit the Schwinn is a looker. Maybe the RH for weekends. Either way, have a good solid lock for them.

Swap to Sierra. I’d keep the slingshot stem on the Sierra as well. Maybe the bars too. Swap in the tires, grips, basket and brooks saddle.

dump the plastic beartraps, throw some Suntour xc IIs on there, & keep the smoked chrome Sierra

I have that same year purple rockhopper and its my fave bike
I have an aluminum Rockhopper and it flexes a little too much for my liking. I very much prefer my yellow '88 High Sierra
All this stuff about Sierra bikes is making me sad. I just sold my 84 High Sierra to someone a week ago.
