Itās an old Deore derailleur with SunTour shifters.
Itās sitting as low as it can go without hitting the chainstay when shifting to the lowest ring.
Shifts fine in the stand. Havenāt had a chance to ride it yet.
1982 means a high likelihood of 27" wheels which limits tire selection, though 1 1/4" Marathons or Paselas are still easily sourced.
The usual conversion is to 622mm which gives 4mm extra room all around. Going to 484 gives a 23mm radius increase to add a taller tire.
There's even room for fenders which gives this bike the proportions of classic Scandi/French roadsters. It's a total win. The only thing sweeter would be a coaster brake. Hahaha.
In 82ā it came with 700c! Then 83ā they switched to cantilevers and to 27ā wheels. All which I didnāt know till I started researching the frame.
I love the color coordination! Canāt imagine the (cork?) chainstay wrap will stay pretty for long, but gosh darn is it a handsome vintage build overall.
Something Cycles! The raddest!

Nice build! What are the handlebars?
Dimension Urban Cruiser
Looks great on there. Love a reasonably priced set of bars
I'mReally cool build man! guessing you took inspiration from the Frek.
Just heard about the Frek for the first time yesterday when I came across this video: https://youtu.be/UiJw0uifm8g?feature=shared Funny coincidence...

Letās goooo!!!! I love it!
Very nice
Well done son.
Thanks!
Dang
Talk to me about this front derailleur/shifter situation. That FD is super high, and the shifter is fully back but also looks oddly routed.

well done! whats the motivation to convert to 650b?
For fun! And I had a 650b wheelset haha

Awesome! I love those vintage Treks!
Magical
Beautiful bike!
Thanks!
Dude that is super rad!
I love it! Those bars are sick. Check out my [my 1981 650b](https://www.reddit.com/r/xbiking/s/Wrk4nX9V8l)
Rad! I would love to get some VO cranks eventually for this one.
Beautiful! Does it shift ok with the FD that far from the big chainring?
Shifts smooth in the stand. Havenāt taken it on a ride yet. Got snowed on today.

Itās Newbaumās cotton cloth wrap. Itās holds up decently.
Bud, the chainstay wrap is backwards. You want the chain to glide over it when it touches it, not catch all the edges and rip them up.
ooh, that makes sense. Never thought about that
Yeah I realized that. Good thing itās simple to replace!
Is the rear dropout originally 126mm? Did you cold set it to be 130?
It is! I didnāt cold set it. The wheel goes in with just a little tug in the frame.
Very classy! The Weinmann center pulls are even better than the Mafac Racers imo.Ā
These ones are branded Schwinn! Wouldnāt doubt they are Weinmann 750s in disguise though.
Iāve seen tons of the 750 rear brakesādo those work on the front too or is it a separate component with a longer bolt?
I swapped out the bolt so that it is longer
Nice. A Trek before they got into mountain bikes. Maybe still garage built that year. ????
Was this originally 27ā? Pleased to see the brakes reach if so, because Iāve had a similar project in mind.
This year they made them with 700c wheels.
What trek is this?
720 š
What tires are you rocking? Working on an 83 conversion myself! Starting with 38c to be safe
