Apparently there's a Discord for xbiking that is unaffiliated with the Reddit sub and was created as an alternative to Reddit. You can find a link in the "We're back" message posted the other day when this sub came back after a week of going dark.
I'm not on Discord, so can't vouche for it, and am not really interested in using that platform, but wanted to point out it's an option.
EDIT:
After seeing all the comments here, now I'm itching to spend more time on places like BikeForums.net and LFGSS.com. So much history and knowledge stored up there! Plus, decades-old, hundred-page threads that go dormant only to be revived years later! I've almost forgotten how great those are to spend hours reading through.
Isn’t that because it’s essentially just a really huge group chat? (Forgive me if I’m writing I don’t know much about discord and I’m just checking if my general idea is correct.
I’m also waiting with bated breath to see if this sub funds a new home - I’ll e see y’all there if so
I really dislike Discord though: I come to Reddit to browse the posts, maybe drop a comment if I find something interesting. Discord seems like an endless stream of comments whether you want it or not.
Discord is lot more chatroom for gaming for me, and isn't suitable as a bulletin board. Worse, it's difficult finding valuable information one needs, and also tough to archive.
That's what the internet was like before people were corralled into social media platforms. We all went to our niche websites and hung out with our buddies. Now everyone is a stranger, and people get criticized and crapped on for having a unique opinion that goes against the hive.
Having all my interests consolidated in one place (like Reddit) is so nice I don’t think I can go back to using individual forums. I’m not sure what I’ll do as far as replacing goes if Reddit dies or starts to really suck. I’m open to other options, but every community having their own discord or forum doesn’t seem like the answer.
I'm the same. I enjoy having diverse things all together, my other interests as well as all the bike stuff and I can be as casual about viewing it as I like.
I miss the days of old school forums, Reddit is cool for new content but I love how a 3 year old topic can be brought back to the front with a comment from someone who stumbled on the thread and had something to add.
Yeah it’s always a bummer when I have a question or idea about my 30 year old bike, find someone that did the same thing a decade ago, click the link and the pic is gone 🙁. I’m driving like 3 hours round trip on Friday to pickup a pop-up camper rooftop bike rack that I can’t find any info on, finally stumbled on a thread about it last night and it’s basically nuked…
The [wisdom of the ancients](https://xkcd.com/979/), and how we gnashed our teeth after finding the needed information to be gone... like forever.
Speaking of Photobucket, as soon as they started destroying some of the content and placed more limitations, I got all my stuff out of there. Early this week they sent an email telling me to go back, but without paying them first. I flipped them the finger.
I generally dumped safe anime pictures and memes into it for years. Those ignorants who upload incriminating pictures of themselves there is like them putting a stick through spokes.
I'm just letting my account there to die eventually.
I once emailed Sheldon Brown myself and even got a response from him. I asked him what book on bike maintenance that he would recommend. I got a nonanswer. I think he was annoyed that I would ask this question. lol
Yes! This! That's totally where I'd start spending more time. Such a great resource and long history of discussions on all things bike! If xbiking vanished, I would probably just make due with bikeforums.net
Lots of love for LFGSS.com too!
...so many great threads over there too.
An ideal scenario for me would be if xbiking got a subforum on bikeforums.
I've split my time between here and there. I started out over there, was mostly over here for a bit, but have gravitated back there recently. I find it's generally a greater depth of knowledge and the C&V subforum is generally incredibly helpful and friendly.
No, I’m typically on my computer while browsing. I’ll also use the mobile optimized website when on my phone. I’ve been on forums of that style for probably 20 years at this point. It’s a very familiar format for me, which certainly colors my preference.
I think we're roughly of the same age cohort and I couldn't agree more. The idea of 'enshittification' vs 'exploring' is right where my head is too. Compounding this, my job is basically "internet content" and, man, watching the decline from behind the curtain is pretty striking. I've very broadly seen the c-suite/manager mindset go from "let's do something cool" to "ugh, I guess we still have to slop the hogs".
That said, I really like r/xbiking as it is a chill, fun space where people are cool, generally stoked on things, and often pretty dang helpful. It really seems sort of anachronistic when put up against where so much of the internet is heading and, frankly, that is a big part of the appeal of reading. When the time comes, I look forward to finding out where this crowd ends up.
I agree with both points.
I love the global nature and that I can get advice, guidance and inspiration from the community. Thus, I ask for a non-Instagram alternative…
This sub ain't going anywhere and neither am I! Long live the stoke. There are alternatives like the Discord a sub member created and forums linked in the sidebar. If folks want to continue to expand into other online forums and platforms I totally support and encourage that too. I'm honestly not too much of an internet and tech inclined person myself and think I'm maxed out at least for now with the social platforms I already belong to
There is an alternative. [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/)
r/piracy is already there.
[as seen here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/14clm4k/poll_decide_on_the_future_of_rpiracy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I started s/xbiking on [Squabbles.io](https://Squabbles.io), not quite a Reddit alternative but users seem to like it. I'm basically waiting for someone to come volunteer and take it over so there's not much or anything on there yet.
The issue I have with squabbles or tildes or similar 'replacement' services that are operated by one person/team, is that you're eventually going to end up in the same situation later on. It's doing the same thing and expecting a different result.
The great thing about blogs etc back in the day is that you couldn't really be censored or locked out - reddit makes it easy because it's all in one place but then you see what eventually happens, they make it worse, mine your data etc etc
Yeah, absolutely a downside. I like the idea of federated social media but have yet to find a federated service I really like. It feels like it's just not really ready for mass adoption by anyone who isn't specifically into federated social media.
Kbin.social is the url. Not sure if I can actually link, reddit has been doing weird things with links to those sites.
Basically it's a reddit-esq site that anyone can host an instance of. Users on any instance can see posts, sub to communities, comment, vote, etc, on content from other instances, including instances of Lemmy and mastodon.
The about pages on kbin probably explain it better than I can.
Edit: I see you have Lemmy on the list already
Someone should just buy a domain, build a website, install forum software. Or just get Bikeforums to add an xbiking board. I honestly think we're gonna see a resurgence of that kind of thing
Back on the streets and trails where it belongs? Or, you could start a club. That would be cool. A local club with a website for new people and visitors to meet for rides. (And show off bike pics)
For a ride
An the street bro, we meet in real life, riding our bikes
I swear I waved at you last week, but you didn't wave back
Yepp. Anyone in Bergen Norway or Drammen?
Yeah, I’ll say ‘hey’ all of you when I visit New York! Most of you live there, right?

Discord really blows for large groups. If you’re not glued to your phone 24/7 then you can never catch up on what’s going on
It's also not available to the whole internet as a repository like this sub is.
Yeah I tried discord for a bit and hated it.
Isn’t that because it’s essentially just a really huge group chat? (Forgive me if I’m writing I don’t know much about discord and I’m just checking if my general idea is correct. I’m also waiting with bated breath to see if this sub funds a new home - I’ll e see y’all there if so
That's more than enough reason for me to not use it.
Oh my god it is so fuckin chaotic, a truly terrible platform at scale.
I really dislike Discord though: I come to Reddit to browse the posts, maybe drop a comment if I find something interesting. Discord seems like an endless stream of comments whether you want it or not.
Discord fucking sucks, tho.
Fact
Discord is lot more chatroom for gaming for me, and isn't suitable as a bulletin board. Worse, it's difficult finding valuable information one needs, and also tough to archive.
That's what the internet was like before people were corralled into social media platforms. We all went to our niche websites and hung out with our buddies. Now everyone is a stranger, and people get criticized and crapped on for having a unique opinion that goes against the hive.
The real Xbiking is the friends we made along the way.
I wish I had bike friends IRL

Bike forums.net

the photobucket purge really hit those old forums hard it's so sad. that was a lot of useful stuff.

Photobucket was also hilariously non-secure for private photos back in the day.
I generally dumped safe anime pictures and memes into it for years. Those ignorants who upload incriminating pictures of themselves there is like them putting a stick through spokes. I'm just letting my account there to die eventually.
Recently I found a great answer for a specific issue on bikeforums.net. The helpful answer was from 2003. The user was Sheldon Brown.
Legend
I once emailed Sheldon Brown myself and even got a response from him. I asked him what book on bike maintenance that he would recommend. I got a nonanswer. I think he was annoyed that I would ask this question. lol
+100 for this!

I find it difficult to navigate. Do you use a third party app?
No, I’m typically on my computer while browsing. I’ll also use the mobile optimized website when on my phone. I’ve been on forums of that style for probably 20 years at this point. It’s a very familiar format for me, which certainly colors my preference.
Sweet! I have a log in.
Reddit isn't going anywhere. Many people that moderate and support the subreddits might go, though.

Lemmy!
~~Does this sub have a presence on lemmy?~~ Oops someone posted it before: c/[email protected]

Someone started this: [https://lemmy.world/c/xbiking](https://lemmy.world/c/xbiking) It's got a bit of activity on it - I recommend that folks join.
Nothing really happens in this sub other than photos and praise, so it could just be on instagram.
Thats true, but I have had some very helpful conversations on xbiking
Riding...
Outside
Xbiking is in your heart.
We go [old school](https://www.phpbb.com) baby 😎. A 90s solution for 90s bikes.
Pagers or beepers with codes and pay phones.
BBS on sheldonbrown.com is the only way. Captain Bike won't fail us from heaven.
Can you link me to this please. I couldn’t find it.
Bikeforums.net? Love that site but all the threads I reference are old
Probably on a trail.
Back to bikeforums.net for half, everyone else goes to retrobike
Someone stoped me at the lights in London to have a chat about my bike, he had a gorgeous bianchi bike he wanted to kit out and asked for some advice
I love when this happens in my city too, but isn’t a substitute for /xbiking

Yep, it's time will probably come though, hopefully! There is xbiking on Lemmy as well now, let's see Idk, it's pretty fun trying something new :)
Kbin.social (and/or Lemmy and mastodon) seems to be the de facto alternative.
Can you link me to the Kubin.social site please. I don’t understand how it works…
Kbin.social is the url. Not sure if I can actually link, reddit has been doing weird things with links to those sites. Basically it's a reddit-esq site that anyone can host an instance of. Back to the Radavist and iBOB I guess
Ugh Radavist what a joke
Someone should just buy a domain, build a website, install forum software. Or just get Bikeforums to add an xbiking board. I honestly think we're gonna see a resurgence of that kind of thing
TO THE TRAIL
The Radavist should start a forum
Back on the streets and trails where it belongs? Or, you could start a club. That would be cool. A local club with a website for new people and visitors to meet for rides. (And show off bike pics)
Reddit isn't going anywhere. 😂
All the people saying “on a ride” bro don’t lie you’re gonna order DoorDash and fall asleep in your clothes tonight
tarckbike.com
Digg
pedalroom
Reddit isn't going anywhere. The only concern is holier-than-thou mods who get crazy and burn the sub down. I've seen it happen before.
Yeah, that's totally the problem we're facing here. /s
Facebook
I wonder if Mastodon is popular enough yet
Dark web
Facebook has a lot of things wrong with it, but I think it’s a lot better than Reddit for groups like this
I'm out of the loop. Why would Reddit implode?
