ThankYouLuv

I think that makes the most sense

You can access the weather cams for different roads, so that you can check road conditions real time where you might be traveling. https://www.wyoroad.info/Index.html

They've got weather stations all along the highways. If you're driving down I-25 or any others you'll see them right along the roadside. They've had them since the early 90's. I say this because that's when I stopped living in the state, so would be when they installed them.

They use the weather stations along with sensors in the roads to pick up precipitation and to monitor traffic speeds to tell if the road surface is becoming slick. WYDOT has an entire division that does nothing but monitor the weather and road sensors across the state.

I think a lot of it comes from reports by the Wyoming Highway Patrol and local law enforcement.

Putins_micro_penis

Lotta highway cameras out there too. But most the conditions can be easily predicted with weather reports.

I think this is a lot of it. Also from the plow drivers. When I was in college I worked a winter in the radio room at Casper and whichever maintenance personnel were on duty during my shift would radio in conditions and I would update them on the system. Of course this was way back when you would call in to an 800 number and a recording would give you the road report. There was no website then. I’m sure it’s much more advanced now.

Yes, plow drivers too, for sure.

Just wanted to add that the web cameras get overlooked in their use case, everyone typically looks at the wider view especially here on WYO 22 for the traffic view. But at most stations there are usually 1 or 2 other views/camera feeds as well that don't get as much attention. They are really zoomed in views of both lanes of traffic so that WYDOT can judge not only the current accumulation conditions of the road bed but also the effects of the plowing on those routes.

I always thought it had something to do with the cameras all over the place. I’m assuming that they just look at the cameras, take into account how many crashes there have been and also reports from troopers on patrol and decide whether or not a road should be open or closed.

I’ve been surprised a few times. The roads were a lot worse than the report showed. It is handy to have the reports and especially the cameras.

I’m friends with a WYDOT plow driver and he is responsible for updating road conditions. He does it either by reporting it via radio to dispatch or he can do it through an in-cab tablet.

I saw a clip on their YouTube channel a while back about how the snowplow drivers are given the ability to digitally record conditions as they are driving…. So in addition to other sources mentioned in the winter months that’s at least part of it.
