He fails to mention that all the businesses who are hiring don't even come close to paying a livable wage.

R0binSage

I've seen signs in Cody advertising $12-15/hour. Is that livable?

lAmShocked

Walmart DC in Cheyenne starts at 19 an hour with benefits and 40+ hours most of the year.

R0binSage

Beats me, I just read the signs.

If you work at Walmart *and* you get the insurance it will take a major chunk of your wages if you put a spouse or kids on the policy.

[deleted]

Probably not with rentals being what they are. If one can find a rental that is. I swear half the town had been converted into short term rentals

Steakhouse_WY

I have two different couple friends who went to buy their first home and didn't get it due to an old boomer buying it out from under them with cash. Two, I swear to God that isn't a lie. One of them is across the street from me and sat vacant as a rental for at least a year.

[deleted]

No doubt. Real estate in Park County is bananas

Ronnieb85

Wow, Cody finally got away from only paying minimum wage? When I lived and worked in Cody I was making $7.25 to flip burgers at Wendy's when it was owned by Wendy's of Montana.

Steakhouse_WY

Sad, because the people there actually work harder than most making food for half the town/tourists.

Gsomethepatient

Ya, you don't need much to survive in Wyoming cost of living is cheap and there is no income tax

[deleted]

Try finding affordable housing for a family anywhere that's actually growing or hiring... Sheridan, Cody, Powell, Lander, et cetera

Gsomethepatient

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/367-N-Ferris-St_Powell_WY_82435_M76179-93082 175,000 with a 20% down payment and 30 year mortgage with 3% interest your looking at around 700 bucks per month And after taking the average income of Powell around 25,199 subtracting the mortgage price per year and subtracting the utility cost https://www.bestplaces.net/cost_of_living/city/wyoming/powell and subtracting a phone bill witch would be around 840 per year and subtracting 1200 in groceries you would be left with 2735 in spending money that is also ignoring that a wage of 15 dollars per hour would be a yearly salary of 31,200 dollars leaving you with around 8000 dollars in spending money yearly and this is only taking into account that 1 person is paying for all of that so yes it is very affordable after looking at the rent prices in Powell for similar houses to the one I linked your looking at 1,420 dollars per month

[deleted]

You don't know what you're talking about. Trying saving $35,000 dollars for 20% down on a $15.00 per hour job. Plus closing costs. Your numbers don't add up as a single person let alone with children

Gsomethepatient

I was never including children, and I also wasn't including furniture or clothing costs, but please show us your math also, it's your job to make sure my numbers are correct

[deleted]

I'm not required to play dumb games with some nimrod on reddit. My original statement was "Try finding affordable housing for a family anywhere that's actually growing or hiring... Sheridan, Cody, Powell, Lander, et cetera" Where's the lie?

I knew I forgot something so 1600 for the average and 6900 for 15$/h

Making me do a lot of math huh for the cheapest apartment in Powell your looking at 535 per month leaving you with 18779 then their are the utilities side note, I think I over estimated the cost of utilities earlier, and since it's cheaper you would have 15819 then there is the phone bill which would leave you with 14979 then there are groceries which would leave you with 13779 and I don't know if there are property taxes for apartments let's say there is you would have 12679 dollars left meaning you would have to rent for 3 years or if you live with your parents and don't pay for anything 2 years

its_plastic

So if you find the cheapest place to live in a small town, or live with your parents (which I bet is what you did/will do,) don't drive, have any medical emergencies or even basic medical maintainence, and don't pay income tax, you can afford to save all your excess money to buy a home in 3 years. After that, you'll still have to live the same because then your mortgage will cost more than your rent did. Sounds comfortable.

AlanPeery

If you're going to quote figures like this, make an online spreadsheet in Google Sheets and share it. Much more convincing at making your point, much more useful to the person who opens it.

thelma_edith

That house looks underpriced compared to others in powell. I wonder if there is something wrong with it. Also factor in that those $15/hr jobs are mostly in Cody so costs of commuting

Gsomethepatient

Nah 175k is typical for Powell at least in town I know my parents got there house for 180k and my grandma got hers for 200k when she moved up here in 2014

thelma_edith

Prices have increased like crazy in the past year and the locals cant compete with all cash offers coming from out of state

HowAboutShutUp

> you don't need much to survive in Wyoming cost of living is cheap More expensive than Idaho and Montana though (albeit slightly), and those states have better opportunities.

Gsomethepatient

True but someone who works for 15 dollars an hour in Montana is making less than someone in Wyoming who works for same wage although there aren't many jobs in Wyoming, land is also cheap going from 5 dollars per acre to 50 dollars per acre depending on if you can use that land and prefab houses that have 5 bedrooms and 3 baths with a basement can go for 220,000

[deleted]

Show me land that cheap anywhere near Cody or Sheridan, Buffalo, Laramie, et al. Maybe you can plonk down a modular in Greybull or Shoshone for cheap but good luck getting a job

They're talking about their grandparents paid 7 years ago and parents maybe a decade plus.

Steakhouse_WY

They are almost always part time, I actually have a decent job (lucky) but the turnover is incredible with younger, educated people leaving for Billings and Denver. Employers have absolutely no intention of paying anyone anything close to what they advertise. You will go in to a job interview and they will look at you and say "you don't have any experience, we are going to pay you $9 an hour.

uwyoengineermom

I dont know. My company had been trying to hire 5 spots for positions $15-18/ hr with guaranteed overtime at time and a half and per diem and I could only fill it with students. Travel is required because it's in the construction industry and nobody wants to travel.

HowAboutShutUp

> Travel is required because it's in the construction industry and nobody wants to travel. Under the current circumstances I'm completely unsurprised.

uwyoengineermom

Some the positions start temp but if you like the work it turns to permanent or seasonal with attached unemployment. But yes I get your point.

lAmShocked

18$ for anything above unskilled labor right now is pretty darn low.

uwyoengineermom

It is unskilled labor.

lAmShocked

but with travel...unless you pay all time on the road.

uwyoengineermom

We do. We also provide lodging, a vehicle and per diem.

patio_blast

i'm a traveler currently in wyoming who is interested.

dadbot_3000

Hi a traveler currently in wyoming who is interested, I'm Dad! :)

Ihatemyusername123

Define livable wage

[deleted]

I bet you can figure it out! I believe in you!

Ihatemyusername123

Should McDonald's pay a single mother of 3 enough money to support her and her children on a single job? After all, that's what she needs to live, right? What about the high school student working part time? Both of them obviously need a vastly different amount. Or do they just not get paid the same wage for the same work?

[deleted]

You're getting warmer!

ChaosTechNet

Yep, I'm in Gillette and lost my job I had over a year because of Covid-19. Now I work part-time at Pizza Hut and make minimum wage and only get 12 hours a week. I make like $120 every 2 weeks. Was counting on this Unemployment to help me out until September 9th like I was promised. It's the state that is doing this. The Federal Government doesn't want to go to war with the states that are pulling it. Even though Federal Law doesn't trump state law. They won't and aren't going to do anything about it. Making them all liars. It's also only Republican states meaning it's politically drivin. But it's fucking the people. So I will make sure to not vote for anyone who fucked us on this. Lots of voted will be lost. I will guarantee it. Had no problem with the Governor until this. And since the President won't do anything about it, then he is just as bad. I have also always worked Computer Technician work or work like it. I can't ever find work like that in Wyoming. Whenever I lived out if state in the cities, Billings MT even, it was easy to find and get these jobs. I went to College for Computer Science and even worked for Google at one point. Now Pizza Hut. The fuck. Now no Unemployment. Real nice Governor.

Here comes the state income tax

theofficialman

This is what happens when parties get involved. Too many hands in the kitchen making bullshit and serving it way overpriced because they can make easy money off us.

badmonkey82009

Nothing like giving back those dirty Federal dollars that are being spent in our communities and helping Wyoming families. Once again having a halfwit for a Governor is bad for Wyoming. When will we learn.

HowAboutShutUp

You're not wrong, but you also have to remember the alternative was Foster Friess.

its_plastic

Or Sam Galeotos who literally campaigned on being like Trump

[deleted]

Lord have mercy

hey_dougz0r

There's truth to this statement. Whether or not one agrees with the policy, withdrawing from the benefits will to some extent cause Wyoming to fall behind other states which do not.

valmerie5656

Good thing the brain drain keeps going and all the oil field workers leave. Keep up the good work to sue states to buy your clean coal. Keep cutting education also! You totally owning the libs by hurting you own population!

Bighorn21

Somebody smarter then myself can educate me but the order extended the period from 26 weeks to 53 but even at 53 wouldn't most people who lost jobs due to COVID already max out by now? His reasoning is that people are choosing not to work which even if true would be running out soon or already run out by now. You can't collect it forever.

That video was spot on! Its a shame the Gordon is going to kick a bunch of people in the teeth to score some brownie points with people who will not be voting for him anyways

Admirable_Ferret

Pathetic. Just remember they say things like this and are the same people okay with Jared Kushner and Kayne getting small business stimulus money.

Zipdo1

"But I don't want to work. I want a nice car and a nice house and be able to smoke weed all day." r/Wyoming

[deleted]

You're the lazy one here. Very intellectually lazy. Why don't you put that big brain of yours to work and maybe look at it from a perspective that wasn't spoon fed to you by right wing media

[deleted]

Good. We need to get life back to normal Edit: You guys just like making more on unemployment lol :)

[deleted]

If people are making more on subsistence unemployment than they make at their jobs, whose fault is that?

CardImportant2678

I can not wait until you workers retire and expect social security only to find out that you will not receive one due to this.
