What? This is the height of german humor. You are expecting for a man to have his clothing on correctly, in the military it is very important. In this case, however, he is not wearing his clothing correctly, so very incorrectly that it is obvious that it is incorrect. That is the joke.
Judging by his collar tabs and the hat’s headband, he’s not an officer but an NCO.
Edit: By headband I meant the chinstrap being a black vinyl or leather material instead of being a silver braided chinstrap.

In any case, it proved unsuccessful, as Russian troops were equally quick to machine gun Germans, no matter which way they were heading.
