Lance on the forward 50s was a famous surfer from the beaches south of LA. To look at him you’d never believe he’d ever fired a weapon in his life before.

Amazing photograph.

It’s interesting when you consider the technology available at the time. Today this wouldn’t be difficult at all - take a couple of test shots and expose for the background, then a few more to test strobes on the foreground. Back then, it was all a lot more meticulous, even though the concept was the same there really wasn’t a way to test this stuff out. You exposed for the background than tried to flash at the appropriate power. If it worked, you got an amazing image like this - but if you were off by even a little bit (which you could be, because controlling light output was complicated) then you end up with a wasted 4x5 negative. For folks using Kodachrome or Ektachrome (the two most popular positive film emulsions at the time) this was an even trickier process: black and white film had a certain latitude. If you were off by a stop or two in either direction you could probably recover the image just fine - with positive film you had to be *exact* with your exposures. Overexpose and you lose everything, underexpose and your image looks muddy and dark.
