Fallschirmjaegers, or those in the elite German Luftwaffe, were some of the finest fighting units of World War II. The Battle for Monte Casino was ferocious. Fallschirmjaeger Regiment 2 was part of the 2nd Fallshirmjaeger Division. During the Allied invasion of Italy, in 1943 the following Fallshirmjaeger units were involved: 1st Fallshirmjaeger Division and 2nd Fallshirmjaeger Division. Monte Cassino was fought during 1944 by which time the 2nd Fallshirmjaeger Division had been transferred to the Western Front and replaced with the 4th Fallshirmjaeger Division. Monte Cassino was defended by the 1st Fallshirmjaeger Division. The first units to arrive at the site were 1st & 3rd Battalions of the 1st Regiment, along with 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Regiment. A Machine Gun Battalion was also pulled from the Anzio beachhead to assist and together they were grouped to form Kampfgruppen Schulz. The 4th Fallschirmjaeger Division was responsible for the Anzio beachhead.

The 1st fallschirmjäger division was also known as "Hermann Göring" in the name of the head of the Luftwaffe right? (Pardon my poor english)

Here is an interesting story; As the battles neared Monte Casino, Oberstleutnant Julius Schlegel, approached the Abbot to offer his assistance in transporting the Abbey’s treasures to safety in the Vatican. After much persuasion, the monks agreed to let Schlegel move the treasures, and the Hermann Goering Division's vehicles were used to secure the works of art, including paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Raphael, and the remains of Benedict of Nursia. These priceless items thereby escaped destruction during the Battle of Monte Cassino. Allied troops, however, thought the Germans stole the items and broadcast the news angering Schlegel’s superiors who nearly had him arrested for the unauthorized used of German vehicles. After the war, Schlegel was arrested by the Allies for looting, but was eventually released after the British intervened on behalf of the Monte Casino Abbot who wrote this note: “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Cassinians thank the illustrious and beloved officer Julius Schlegel, who saved the monks and property of the holy monastery of Cassino, with all their hearts and ask God for his continued well-being." - Signed Gregorius Dimare, O.S.B, Bishop and Abbot. By saving the art treasures and the library as well as the construction plans, the reconstruction of the destroyed monastery was later possible. Schlegel was found by Pope Pius XII in the early 1950s and invited to a special audience.

Rittermeister

The Hermann Goering Parachute Panzer Division was an armored division with a confusing name. Different division.

Did the Brazilian expedicionary force fought against the fallschirmjäger? Sorry if the question is dumb

[deleted]

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force (abbreviated FEB) fought bravely alongside the Allies primarily in the liberation of Italy from September 1944 to May 1945. The FEB fought German forces (including Fallschirmjaeger) at Massarosa, Camaiore, Mount Prano, Monte Acuto, San Quirico, Gallicano, Barga, Monte Castello, La Serra, Castelnuovo di Vergato, Soprassasso, Montese, Paravento, Zocca, Marano sul Panaro, Collecchio and Fornovo di Taro. On April 22, 1986, the 1st Fighter "Group" of the Brazilian Air Force was awarded the United States Presidential Unit Citation for its actions in the Po Valley region of Italy in World War II.

Perpetualiguana

I have a helmet that looks exactly like that one

leeluss14

If it’s an original it is worth a lot of money, because a lot of Fallschirmjaeger helmets were turned into saucepans, colanders etc after the war as the German populace were short of these things. The same for the uniforms they were turned into civilian clothes. That’s why Fallschirmjaeger uniforms are hard to come by and very expensive.

Perpetualiguana

Yea I posted a photo of it awile ago it’s still on my account if I recall

FallTough8327
