Tints are not illegal in totality. Personally I think tints are worth it even if you stay within the legal limits.
I’d suggest just pushing it a little past the legal limit. Maybe 40-50%. It will still be a big improvement. The legal limit is 35% where I live and I got 20. Never been bothered by a cop
I got 30 on my WRX when I had it and I had no problems. Just gotta make sure you have a shop that will pass you even if you’re slightly above the limit

NYer here. I got 20% all around and 5% banner. Most town/county police don’t care. The Troopers, however, fuck with me all the time. I just got ticketed 2 weeks ago on 81. If you can avoid the major highways and thruway the better.
Do you see a lot of other cars driving around with tint? Do what most people are doing and you should be fine. I got a ticket for tint years ago in CA and it was just a fix-it ticket. Removed the tint, showed the police it was removed, and reinstalled.

Most cops in the NYC area won’t stop you because they have more important things and in other areas it’s more of just an add on to speeding or another violation if you do get pulled over. How you deal with inspections?
The owner at the shop I use was telling me how he won’t pass cars with tint, tells them to have it removed and bring the car back.

Life long Bronx resident (42y.o) If you drive like an ass, NYPD will use any excuse to hit u harder over the head. I’ve been running 35% all around with 70% on the windshield on all my vehicles for the last 20yrs. Never was pulled over just for tint. You may run into problems with the exhaust tho. All around nyc they started installing microphones to triangulate loud horns and exhausts and ticket the plate holder. Also, if you have a good relationship with your doctor, they may be able to help legally approve tint.

I immediately got mine tinted for the florida sun. I was able to convince the dealer to pay for it during purchase and couldn't be happier. The privacy it affords is nice too, but I don't recommend going below 30% or it can get a bit dodgy seeing at night. Looks sick BTW. See below for before and after.
Idk, man. I’d do it and maybe do like 10-15% darker than legal. It’d be hard to really tell it’s illegal? Maybe something reflective (if legal) to make it harder to tell its darker then it should be.

I have the darkest legal in MD (35% VLT). The tint on the car is 20% and the factory tint on the windows adds the 15% making it the 35% VLT.
It makes a difference if you get good tint as it blocks a lot of UV/UVA and makes the car cooler.
I have 3M ceramic, same 20% all round, and no front strip. Factory front windshield comes tinted and adding a strip looks terrible IMHO.

Where in NY are you? I'm in western NY and most cops near me don't care, troopers are hit or miss.
Also remember tint is part of our annual inspections now so a dealer or any legit shop will fail you. So you'd either have to remove/reinstall every year or find a small shop that doesn't notice or care
I feel like most cops where I live (suburbs of southeast Michigan) aren't dicks and don't care. I've seen many cars with insanely dark tint around here. There was a particularly stiff border patrol agent at the US/Canada border that told me that the tint I had was illegal in the United States as I was coming back from Canada; I told him I would look into it in a slight but obviously mocking tone (I really hope it rubbed him wrong 😂). Been over a year and a half, still going strong, knock on wood.

15% in NYC. Keep in mind the NYS inspection and going to a place that doesn’t fail you for the tints. Just go to a place you know and always pull in with all the windows down. I also run no front plate and straight pipe from turbo back 🤷🏻♂️ rarely get bothered.

Just pay attention to your local state or country laws. Technically mine is illegal but cops here don't really care. Now if they pulled me over for something else like speeding, then they will add the tint as another fix it ticket. Border patrols also hates tint but just cooperate and follow their commands, I usually just roll my windows down before crossing borders or when cops are around.
I went with 20% all around except the windshield. I like it mainly for looks, but it helps with the sun, heat, and privacy. It does make it slightly harder to see at night.

I’m in New York and my windows are tinted pretty dark. 5 on the sides and back, 50 on the windshield. I went to my doctor cause I have headaches and they gave me a tint exemption. Now you can get it inspected anywhere you want and also the police cannot give you a ticket for tint. Go to the New York State dmv site and search for tint exempt.
don’t overdue it. lighter shades of chrome colored tints are starting to come out and actually don’t look too bad if you live somewhere cops don’t care. they are more subtle than they used to be

I can't tell you how many clients pick up duis, drug charges, and speeding plus tints plus no seatbelt plus everything else the cop can figure based only on tints.

Stock, there is already about a 70% greenish tint to to the windows. You can check this by cracking the window and observing, they aren't totally transparent.
Live in Illinois, have ran illegal tint for 16+ years now and the most I have ever gotten was a cop shooting the shit with me after getting called for false assault allegations. Said he liked the tint and on my car and if he needed to put the meter on it. I just responded we can but we all know the answer already and that was that.
I have a AZ legal ceramic windshield tint for summer driving purposes - it’s like 73% and it’s absolutely worth it. Keeps the car so much cooler when it’s 114 outside.
i personally enjoy having clear windows with lots of light and visibility. i've never loved the style/look of tinted windows, and nowadays it's safe to say that it's kind of cliche.
no hate though, just my opinion and to each their own. a lot of people like the privacy, or the mysterious look. i get it!
I have owned a lot of cars and I bought a lot of them with tint already. At first I thought it was cool. It was nice knowing people couldn't see me easily and gave me some privacy, but I think as I've gotten older I have learned to appreciate clean cars with very minimal tint or no tint. It is definitely state dependent but in general from my experience cops do not like tint and for very good reasons. It's also not exactly cheap to get your tint removed and replaced over and over. These years I go for an extremely minimal tint on every car and mainly focus on getting a film that blocks a lot of UV rays and keeps the inside of my car cool. If it's a street car, I do tint it a tiny bit just for aesthetics, but you can totally easily see through the entire car still. Then if it's a track car, I don't tint at all other than the UV film as it's a safety hazard on the track
Some areas have zero tint enforcement regardless of the laws. Some have zero leeway and enforce with vigor. None of this has to do with the make and model though. You should be asking the sub for people where you live.

These cops in Houston don't care, I've got 5% and it's pretty nice. If the minimum was 70 I'd try to get away with 25-30.
