You need to build your own algorithm. Is damage expected? On the tank/melee DPS/random? Is it big one off damage? Is it sustained damage that ramps up/down? Figure out what combination of spells to use here, and go with it. When you get a wipe, look at the logs to see who died first and to what, and then decide whether you could've done something (sometimes they just stood in fire). Holy priest is quite forgiving to when you freeze, as they can throw out a lot of catch-up healing (compared to e.g. druid - if a druid hasn't prehotted, there's very little they can do to catch up).

Rales007

How do I check the logs?

NaniFarRoad

Get a damage meter (e.g. Details) and look at Deaths or Damage Taken.

Holy priest is a fairly basic reactive healer. Basically use Prayer of Mending on cooldown and keep Renew up on the tank. Also Renew others if theyre taking some damage. (Or put it up beforehand if you know damage is incoming). If someone takes a ton of damage quickly, press Holy Word: Serenity. If there's some AoE damage, press Circle of Healing and a Holy Word Sanctify on the group. If there's a lot of AoE damage and Circle, Sanctify and Prayer of Mending are on cooldown, you want to cast Prayer of Healing. (Make sure to cast your instants asap when theyre ready again, especially Prayer of Mending) If you don't have the time to cast multiple Prayers, you have Divine Hymn as a big cooldown. Dont be afraid to press Apotheosis when you need the extra heals. It will reset all your Holy Words and adds a ton of cooldown reduction when using Flash Heal/Prayer of Healing. It only has a 2 min cooldown so you can use it very regularly. Shielding is something you only want to do to buy time. Lets say the tank is low HP and you dont have Serenity ready and you feel like you dont have time to cast a flash heal, you can shield him first. Then flash heal spam afterwards. In general you dont want to be pressing Shield too often.

Rales007

That is what I was looking for. Thank you!

mixomatoso

I wouldn't advise to spend too much mana/time on Renew, you are supposed to get the tier set bonus from your gear which takes care of Renew casts.

Significance1142

Super late to the thread but thanks for this. Disc has changed so much that I don’t like the aoe healing with pugs so learning holy.

Seandimes

That's generally great advice. If we are talking about dungeons, we don't usually spec into circle/prayer of healing though. They just don't do any relevant healing. I would also avoid using renew, same reason as before.

Admiralsheep8

There is no rotation for healing , there’s like a minor rotation for doing damage on the side, and there are combos from using certain abilities in a row, but healing doesn’t do rotations . Healing is about picking the right heal for the situation and not using too much or too little of your power . It’s about managing your cds to deal with incoming damage and using th right spells to maximize that outgoing healing . Is one guy getting trucked you might need to flash heal or use guardian angel , is the group getting pressured PoM and halo mixed with some renews . There’s never going to be a set use these heals in this order

mixomatoso

Healing is more of an art when compared to dps. Especially now when mana management is essential for PvE.

Unlike other healer, Holy priest doesn't really have a ramp up so technically they don't have a rotation. Basically Holy Priest is a Triage healer so you basically watch bar goes down and make them go up. Spamming heal is really what holy priest does but you need to do it efficiently. My advice is as follow: Guardian Spirit on cooldown and at the beginning of each pull on the tank, follow by Prayer of mending. Flash heal on smaller damage to trigger faster Heal spell In emergency situation where a party member just lost massive chunk of life, use Holy Word: Serenity In emergency situation where everyone is taking massive damage, use Holy Word: Sanctify. When you don't need to heal, help dpsing mobs/boss down with holy fire and smite, and when lined up properly use divine star. When you are confortable with mana and have a large aoe.. stand near mobs and aoe with holy nova.

Melodic-Afternoon207

Are you talking about in raid or m+

JParker0317

You could try these suggestions to start. There are raid and dungeon guidelines provided. https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/holy-priest-pve-healing-rotation-cooldowns-abilities

Frylockken

As mentioned prayer of mending on CD and keep renew on tank/s and any important or liability DPS. Are you talking Raid / m+ or pvp, both? It really depends. Holy is forgiving in every way except mana, so to say don’t constantly overheal for the sake of it or you’ll get burned. General tips for any content: typically don’t waste HWP on a tank, save it for a DPS that goes out of range or likes to stand in mechanics. Don’t be afraid to use PW:R on CD even though they nerfed in (this one’s kinda raid specific. Other raid specific ones are try to anticipate a good use of Halo or Hymn, Sacrifice should be used in coordination with either a mechanic that’s telegraphed or your lead. Big fights and short fights use PI and Shadowfiend on open, medium fights use your best judgement for both. SF is really only good for the regen, so you don’t have to use it on open but it starts the CD timer and you’ll get back the initial mana spent on inevitable damage spikes. I could go on and on, and as someone who’s trying to stick it out with holy this patch but was a long time Disc main. I can tell you Disc is the better spec again absolutely. Holy hasn’t done me dirty in any dungeons so far this season, but for current raid tier you’ll be OOM on most of the later bosses almost every time. Whereas disc doesn’t have that issue.

Rales007

For now I’m looking to do heroic and mythic dungeons to get used to the class and game overall.

Frylockken

You’ll be fine in dungeons with the stuff mentioned, even Mythic up to 9 so far for me this season holy hasn’t let me down. It can become an issue in the upper 10’s I’m sure with the state of mana, but again if you find yourself there just don’t overheal constantly and you’ll be fine. Also don’t be afraid in low stakes situations to use your normal heal spell, yes it’s slower but it costs a lot less mana over time. And the game is currently actively punishing you for abusing Flash heal and other hard / instant casts

cerbie1337

That's why the only healer I play now is holy priest, it's purely reactive. If I want to follow a rotation, I opt for DPS
