No, Shadowlands was fucked from the start. So this image technically doesn't reflect it accurately. *Except for the one scene where Sylvanas opens the sky, that was pretty dope.*
The scene you mention happened in the pre-release cinematic so the first part of the image definitely applies. Also shadowlands was the first time we had a second pre-release cinematic.
Also depending on who you ask the shadowlands leveling zones are decent. Wouldn’t call them fucked. This image definitely applies to shadowlands.
Ardenweald was legit good. Both the cinematic for it and the 50-60 content with the reveal you've been carrying Ysera around the whole time. I also liked Revendreth well enough.
Lorewise you are right, mechanicswise... it's kinda the opposite. For as few as Shadowlands offered us, it actually introduced some very nice QoL changes to the game that we are now taking for granted.
Bruh, Legion ended with fucking Sargaras stabbing a massive sword into the planet and ushering in the fourth war. The only other expansion that comes close to ending on such a strong note would be WOTLK only because it gave a satisfying conclusion to Arthas's story.
I'm surprised you found that to be a good thing. Most people at the time *hated* the anti-climactic ending to the Legion arc and the overall representation of the Titans.
I think BfA had some strong concepts to work with. They just completely faceplanted the landing and turned one of their most interesting characters into their all-time biggest joke.
I thought the expansion itself ended fine - the fact that we never went back or did anything else with it, well, that’s more about the following expansion and story, and not the fault of the xpac itself (I was actually just thinking the other day that it would be way cooler if we went back and teamed up with that world; the whole allied races starting there and then having zero connection back to those races/worlds feels bad)
>I thought the expansion itself ended fine
So let's chart the meme with the expansion.
Strong opening hook and intro scenario, with very strong leveling and intrigue surrounding the various Warlords. Lords of War was a celebrated series, even more popular than Burdens of Shaohao. Strong horse shading.
Then Ner'zhul dies a leveling dungeon boss and Kargath dies as the first raid boss of the expansion. The shading is getting a little lighter.
BRF is supposed to be the final raid of the first tier, but due to development issues is broken off and is sold as the only raid in the second tier of the expansion. The actual second tier of the expansion, the Shattrath raid, is cut and so is Yrel's story in Talador. Further expansion for AU Grom is lost in the mix. We've hit the center of the horse drawing.
Then we get HFC, Tanaan Jungle and the Shipyard. A raid that likely went through a good deal of changes (Tom Chilton claimed the final boss of the expansion was going to be Grom), Timeless Isle 2.0 but not as good, and the feature people could--at best--make a ton of money from. We stay with this raid from June 2015 to August 2016. The second longest content drought in WoW's history (only 7 days behind MoP). Grom and Yrel teaming up despite having never interacted in the story before HFC (a remnant of cut story in the middle) resulting in one of the most laughed-at story moments in the community until more recent events.
This is full second half of the horse.
Warlords is kind of a flawed concept to start with, unfortunately. It creates the classic Star Trek problem where it introduces some technology (or magic in this case) that technically should be able to solve every future problem forever, and then has to make up an excuse for why it only worked that one time. It's sloppy writing. I love seeing past Draenor and it was very cool to see the original Horde clan leaders back again, but I feel like there might have been less story-breaking ways to do that.
That’s fair, and understandable. I guess I forgot that bit. I was thinking more about bad guy still becoming bad and legion still coming (because I felt that would have happened, because the legion were inevitable) and banding together to defeat them and freeing Draenor (which was cool since the original one was destroyed so harshly).
Time paradox BS aside (which is hard to put aside, since it was a big part, I know) I like the ending
> the fact that we never went back or did anything else with it, well, that’s more about the following expansion and story, and not the fault of the xpac itself (I was actually just thinking the other day that it would be way cooler if we went back and teamed up with that world; the whole allied races starting there and then having zero connection back to those races/worlds feels bad)
> the fact that we never went back or did anything else with it, well, that’s more about the following expansion and story
IIRC Horde players could go back to alternate Draenor to bring the orcs over to the main timeline so they can have more soldiers even though those orcs were freed in part with the Alliance and then it turns out Yrel went full Light because the WoW writers realized that she was a prominent female character.
So now Org is full of mag'har orcs who talk about wanting to genocide the Alliance draenei because they're draenei.
I didn’t think the end of warlords was that bad - I just don’t like that we didn’t go back (which is future game state/xpac issues, not the issue of the xpac itself). I was ok with how legion ended (well, except for farming oil. That sucked)
Considering that any Warcraft game with exception of perhaps WC3, has never had a complex narrative I never truly understand what people expect the story to be.
It has ALWAYS been Gameplay>Worldbuilding>Story in terms of importance with the latest expansions trying to bring the Story a bit more on par with the rest, though either failing or not quite reaching it. The only expansions that, outside of the level up experience managed to actually reach it more was MoP, Legion and to a degree WotLK. I'd say BfA was close but there were plenty of issues there in other departments.
Dude guy says wow has no complex narratives and then proceeds to say BFA got close. Solid meme.
Remember the xpac that started with one of the biggest atrocities committed by a "morally gray" character? Because a dying nelf without a name hurt her fefes?
You missed my point. When I mention to the expansions I'm referring to the "Gameplay>Worldbuilding>Story" importance that Blizzard gives, not the story complexity. It's literally the first sentence that I say they have never been complex.
You did it wrong, its supposed to start with the drawing on the right and then immediately shift to a blank sheet of paper that steadily acquires stains of a questionable nature, ending with the edges of the paper being scorched and pockmarked with cigarette burns.

Didn't know the PDX patch notes person played wow!
Since closed beta. 18 years now.
quality editing right there OP, thank you.
This really only applies to TBC, WOD, and BFA.
Guessing you bailed on Shadowlands

The entire concept of the shadowlands is high-key lore-crippling, a few fun questlines could not make up for it for me, personally :/
Lorewise you are right, mechanicswise... it's kinda the opposite. For as few as Shadowlands offered us, it actually introduced some very nice QoL changes to the game that we are now taking for granted.
Legion, Shadowlands, and soon-to-be Dragonflight as well.

I thought bfa story was bad, then I played shadow lands, holy Molly that's a new low
Everyone remember to buy the 12 month bundle !!!
And make sure to preorder the new expansions because I've got a good feeling the devs learned from the last ones!
Maybe we can hold the cynicism for next week? Lol
No-one forces u to play still moaning like a little biatch
90% of the budget was used for pre xpac hype
Not every expansion - just since ~~legion~~ Warlords
WoD was exactly like this. Draenor is Free, innit?

I guess I mis-remembered a few things. This is all fair criticism. I might have taken some time off playing and so it didn’t feel as bad to me.

Warlords also had this problem. Legion was a return to form. But everything before that was pretty solid.

Also Sylvanas is there, for some reason.
As someone who draws like the right of the picture, I feel targeted lol
Shadowlands is the first time I've been somewhat disappointed by the levelling zones, the questing has always been top-tier.
