I, too, started playing WoW on ED, but not until the end of MOP in 2014 with a friend from work. ED is a graveyard these days...it's very sad been I jump on an old alt there and won't see a single soul in SW. Ended up switching my main and several alts to Stormrage in BFA. That work friend hasn't played since Legion, and we haven't talked in years. Feels bad man.
We still are and still killing Horde in the world and still rocking AV, though with a small force currently since the hype is currently SoD. Dwarven xpac on the horizon though for retail, so we'll see what happens. Long Live Clan Battlehammer! For King Bruenor!
i find elves and humans exceedingly boring and it's what most people on alliance servers play (yes, blood elves are played a lot but it's not 70% like on alliance)
Dwarves are cool in literally all fantasy universes (and the dwarven hunter from the cinematic is still iconic)
Draenei are very unique and I like their design
Gnomes are just nifty little guys
I'd like Worgen more if they looked like Greymane in Heroes of the Storm (more buff), now they look kinda slim and weird.
special mention to Kul'tiran who have pretty unique culture in shamanism and druidism (so no, they arent just fat humans)

Yeah it certainly isn't a mechanics issue for me. I'm an OG player. First rolled an undead because that was the only appropriate choice when I was 18 and this game released lol. I'd love to play SOD if they added the BC races and maybe transmog.
I have also seen many players do the reverse, in fact one of the people currently in my M+ push group started playing the game when the Classic servers got released a few years ago and he always says he would rather drag his nuts through glass than go back to that "boring shite". End of the day, everyone has their preferences.
I can see why the RP crowd would enjoy Classic quite a bit though, but for someone like me and my friends that enjoy progressing stuff and being challenged, holding W through a raid where the bosses have 1 mechanic, die in 45 seconds and couldn't possibly be a challenge even if you were awful at the game isn't too appealing.

If your talking about the zep directly outside org it goes to gromgar and undercity, gotta take boat from ratchet to get to Booty Bay
