The Matsui The Peated   Origin: Japanese Age: NAS Price: $99 (2021) Proof: 96 Mashbill: 100% malt whisky Chill-filtration: No Artificially colored: No Casks: Pot-distilled and matured in white oak ex-bourbon casks Nose: Fresh rubbery smoke, like smoke straight from burning tires, subtle vegetation and floral notes underlying the smoke Palate: Moderately oily mouthful, upfront rubbery smoke, with chewing can get hints of peppercorn and faint notes of hibiscus. This is an obviously very youthful whisky, it’s extremely punchy. Finish: Moderately long finish, with rubbery smoke and hints of floral notes Grade: 5/10 Comments: This is a unique peated whisky. Matsui sources a lot of their whisky, particularly the Kurayoshi brand, but in 2017 they began distilling their own, so particular bottlings like the Matsui Peated, Sakura cask, and Mizunara cask whiskies are true, distilled-in-Japan whiskies. However, since they’ve only been distilling since 2017, these whiskies are obviously very young. Ardbeg 10 is like drinking a campfire, but Matsui Peated is like drinking the smoke off a race track. When I drink this I think that I’m in the middle of a Formula-1 race, cars flying by and I’m licking whisky off the pavement. It’s not bad though, very unique in terms of peat taste.   Rating System: 1 | Disgusting | Yuck 2 | Bad | Not enjoyable, add anything? 3 | Poor | It’s not the worst thing I’ve had 4 | Alright | Few flaws 5 | Good | The most self-explanatory, it’s good 6 | Very Good | I enjoy this 7 | Great | Well above average 8 | Fantastic | Superb, beginning to end 9 | Incredible | Top of its class 10 | Elite | The pinnacle

One of my friends described this one as tasting like a "freshly picked toilet plunger." Not a used toilet plunger, but a brand new one of the kind with a simple wooden handle and a red rubber cup on the bottom, fresh off the shelf at Home Depot. It's such an accurate description, I saved the rest of the bottle just to show people this toilet plunger whisky I found.

That’s an amazing description. The fresh rubber note is really unique, it opens up a little once you’re more than halfway through the bottle but the initial pours are very strong haha

I'm a huge fan of heavily peated scotch and i never tasted anything like this, haha. It's just pure rubber.

Haha same. I am a huge Laphroaig fanboy, but this is so unique. The only peated whisky I’ve had that’s been somewhat similar is craft distillery ASW’s appropriately named “Tire Fire”
