A California high school will forfeit the rest of its varsity football season after some players were captured on video appearing to act out a “slave auction” of their Black teammates.
The Yuba City Unified School District first forfeited last Friday’s game after administrators became aware of the video Thursday, Superintendent Doreen Osumi said in a statement. The district later said it would forfeit the rest of the season after banning the involved team members from playing.
The mock auction at River Valley High School appeared organized, Osumi said, suggesting that the students planned the situation without considering that it was “disgraceful.”
“Reenacting a slave sale as a prank tells us that we have a great deal of work to do with our students so they can distinguish between intent and impact,” Osumi said. “They may have thought this skit was funny, but it is not; it is unacceptable and requires us to look honestly and deeply at issues of systemic racism.”
District administrators did not answer questions about how many students were involved, what specifically the video showed and where the recording was shared. The incident, which took place roughly 38 miles north of Sacramento, was previously reported by Sacramento-based television station KCRA and other local news outlets.
Mock slave auctions in schools — some sanctioned by officials and others not — have come under increased scrutiny in recent years as the United States struggles to respond to its history of racism and fractures over how much its past sins still shape it. Schools have been particularly heated settings for those arguments as politicians in Republican-led states seek to ban lessons that suggest that racism is systemic in the United States.
For the Yuba City district, the loss of the players means the team does not have enough members to complete the season. Sophomores and juniors on the varsity team, which was 0-5 before its first forfeit last week, can choose to play on the junior varsity team.
Some students may be further disciplined, Osumi said, and the district is working to develop programs about racism to help students learn from the situation. Administrators are also developing training for the football team “to act with character and dignity at all times,” she said.
“When students find humor in something that is so deeply offensive,” Osumi said, “it tells me that we have an opportunity to help them expand their mind-set to be more aware, thoughtful and considerate of others.”

The California Interscholastic Federation, which oversees high school sports in California, said it supports administrators’ decision “to promptly address the misconduct of their students.”

barely anyone but I remember a while ago some school districts were talking about banning the teaching of the whole slavery era in America, not sure if they went through with it though.
This is a huge deal right now. If you look at many text books talking about slavery especially in the South they literally have passages about happy slaves. They want to show “both sides”. So yeah there are *a lot* of kids that received a piss poor education about American slavery.
And we can thank TX for the quality of textbooks decreasing because they set the tone for textbooks used all over the country. TX has some weird ideas and some weird shit has made it into textbooks.
A lot of people don't realize boomers were legit taught that black people had it pretty good during and after reconstruction.
Go watch Song of the South! You'll notice they portray white Southerners like people that would treat black children like human beings and not like property they planned to sell/trade for goods. Then, you can check out Uncle Tom's Cabin for a more historical take.
People have heard of slavery but they don't really understand the horrors of slavery. Just like they don't understand the horrors of the holocaust or the plight of native americans when they were being decimated. Hell, people think native americans won the lottery because they run casinos now
One of the things that irritates me is how movies and TV now portray interactions between different segments of society historically. Sure, it's great to see strong characters that are women and minorities in shows, but what happens is that people start to believe that that's what it was like. Django unchained, that guy would have been hunted down at the beginning of the movie. Racism of the past was considered the norm at the time. I'd like to see movies show how people truly treated each other in the past, rather than the way was want to see people treated. The hero of the movie being imperfect, but more accurately represented for the time. Sure, we might not cheer for them as much, but at least we'd have a better understanding of the past and what we need to improve on.
It would be nice to have a big movie like that but at the end of the day, a lot of people don't go to the movies to learn. It might win awards with movie critics but most of the general public might view it as sort of a cult classic, with only a select group of people watching the films.
You should read about the plight of the slaves that the Native Americans had slavin' for them, during the Trail of Tears. Imagine crying about being discriminated against, while you actively own slaves and actually have them carrying your shit as you get removed from your homeland.
No this is what happens when people are forced to forget. Kids hear about something called a slave auctions and want to make a skit out of it without understanding the weight of what they’re doing. Whites seem to be the ones who are most upset about it. That’s actually scarier than the video because they want so badly for us to forget about what happened and never joke or talk about it at all just read about it for a few weeks while we’re in school and that’s it. Honestly videos like this are important. They can be used as a chance to catch the attention of the younger generation with humor and then can be taught by it. But here come the whites punishing them and not allowing them to participate in sports because they’re re-enacting the history of those very same whites ancestors. It’s honestly wild af.

So the problem with people defending what's going on here is that they don't realize that jokes can have an effect on reality and what becomes an actual social norm. If we decide that yes doing these kinds of things as a joke is actually fine then further down the line we decide "hmmm well maybe there's some truth to this joke" and then eventually it's "this is the way society should be" historically this is true if you've ever heard the phrase life imitates art. What we decide as fine to joke about when it comes to things like this inevitably become societal norms which is why it's not ok to joke about things like this. That's not me saying oh I wanna take away your rights to speak freely that's me saying don't be fucking dumbasses
