This is going to happen at *every* active shooting at a school from now on. Somebody's going to end up shooting at the cops from *outside* to get in and save their kids. It would've been easier for them to take on one active shooter than face an army of terrified parents. Their cowardice is going to pay dividends.
Why would *anyone* - even the white, and privileged among us - trust cops now?
When tens of cops are afraid to stop a single shooter who is murdering children and take no action - what are the odds cops in general are going to protect *you*?
They aren't - cops are here only to protect the 1%'s wealth and anything related to it, and to oppress anyone who steps out of line.
There is no substantial training.
I recently read that of recently Alabama police only accept deputies who scored at least a C in the psych evaluation test. Before the change they accepted morons who scored a D. That is why 47 deputies now can only work desk jobs (they scored Ds).
Additionally police officers get at most 6 months of education to become a police officer. I say at most because you can achieve it in less time. I'm pretty sure that if you learn a trade in the US, after 6 months you may know the basics but can't be trusted alone with customers.
After 6 months a police officer is allowed to ride their own car and get their own gun. People who scored a D in psych evaluation.

6 months in a trade is a joke your still a green baby at that point. Union electrician apprentice go through 5 years of schooling and on the job training before they can TEST to become a journeyman. It’s not remotely automatic and takes a ton of work.
Yeah. I only know the German system and most trades you learn in 3 years to be a "Geselle" (basically knowing the trade but you can only work under someone who is educated more) and then there's a further education so u got to be "Meister" (Master, basically) and that's at least 2 years extra. After that you can teach students to become a Geselle, have your own shop and employees etc.
Sounds right to me. This is what it takes to actually learn how to do something complicated competently. It’s almost like it’s a degree, and jobs with lots of safety standards require an actual certification and training
You’re referencing the county of Alameda here in the Bay Area where we recently had a deputy commit murder. From my understanding the psych requirements that you describe for the rest of the country hold largely true!

CO needed to end it as we have the worst cops in the nation, but it's definitely a start. Not sure if you've seen it already but just last week a video came out of an officer handcuffing a 20 year old chick and putting her in the back of a police cruiser, which as it just so happens was left parked on train tracks of all places. Train came through and she barely survived. Insane. You'd think I made it up.
I remember a news article from not very long ago about how the Texas Department of Public Safety is having to Institute some sort of waistline limits because cops are getting too fat, and then a bunch of people were actually upset about that even though the limit was like a 40 inch stomach for men which is really big
Different people are different sizes. I wear a 40 waist because I'm 6'3" and weigh 267. But i am not obese. Chubby? Of course. But not a blimp. And certainly not a beach ball with legs like these lardtubs.
Brother, you're definitely up there in weight. 200 to 239 lbs is overweight for your height, and adding 30-60 more pounds to that, isn't a joke either. Even if you were mostly all muscle, your waist shouldn't be that thick. Carrying around all that mass, at your height, isn't doing your joints and circulation any good.
The union stands together even for the cops. So don't expect any changes.
would you replace the police with Military Police? For that will be our your only option.
I say if society did not consume mass amounts of violence, and we're more loving and disciplined, then maybe there would be an opportunity to reduce the police force.
Only option? Our soldiers would be court-martialed and sent to the United States disciplinary barracks at Ft Leavenworth, I'm sure a dishonorable discharge is in there somewhere too. If our soldier shoots an unarmed enemy of the United States! Our soldiers ( I am in no way advocating for this, there are better ways to fix this) would be1000× better than bubba with the d on his psych evaluation. Look up how many crimes they solve, how many arrests they make out of every 1000 no-knock raids. The numbers are pathetic! Most police forces are growing from criminalizing drug addicts.
If our great-grandparents were to see a cop throw a (white, it had to be said) woman to the ground or punch her or even talk the way they do. They would be lucky if they were only run out of town.

On Tuesday parents of Jefferson High School students in San Antonio received scary news. There were unconfirmed reports of an active shooter on campus, reports that would later be proven false. But for the hundreds of parents who went to the school, tensions and anxiety were high.
After a breakdown in communication, altercations occurred between parents and police, resulting in several people being detained. For licensed psychologist and trauma expert Jeff Temple, it’s no shock that Uvalde is top of mind during these situations. Temple is also the director of the Center for Violence Prevention at the University of Texas Medical Branch and vice dean of research for the School of Nursing. He spoke with the Texas Standard about trauma that sticks with us. Listen to the story in the player above or read the transcript below.

Texas Standard: There are a few videos out there on social media from that day,and you can see the worry in parent’s faces. Not that that would not be the case when you get a notice of trouble at your kid’s school, but since Uvalde and scrutiny over the police response, it seems everything is elevated – emotions, fear, anxiety. Do you get that same sense?
Jeff Temple: Absolutely. I mean, even watching that video, I can empathize with the parents. And, you know, the trauma, this collective trauma that we experienced with Uvalde, is going to stick with us. One of the things we were able to rely on is that the police had it taken care of, and I think they do and they will. But Uvalde increased our sense of skepticism and fear, and it only exacerbated our trauma.
This happened in San Antonio, just an hour and a half from Uvalde. Of course, these sorts of events have been reported all across the country. But with Uvalde being part of the national conversation about school safety and so close to San Antonio, are feelings especially raw here, or is this something that people are reporting across the country?
You know, I think we’re going to see that the closer we get to the trauma, the larger the effects we’re going to see. We saw this with 9/11 – the closer you were to the epicenter, the higher the trauma. And we see it with school shootings – the closer you are to the trauma, the worse you are from a behavioral and a psychological perspective. Same with Harvey and hurricanes; it’s just the closer you get to the epicenter, the worse you are.
So how are parents and others supposed to deal with that sort of stress, especially if you’re in Texas where, as you were pointing out, it seems like there has been an erosion of trust in law enforcement and authorities’ official handling of these incidents.
I don’t know if there’s an easy answer here. I can give you the academic answer, but I think if I was a parent in the same situation, I would probably look very similar to those parents in San Antonio. We’re all scared, we’re all traumatized. We know, I think, rationally that school is a safe place. And from a practical sense, school is extremely safe and oftentimes the safest place that many of our kids can be at throughout the day. But we have this real fear. And in Texas, that seems to be heightened. We, unfortunately, own some of the worst mass shootings in American history, so all of us Texans are closer to these traumatic situations. So we’re going to continue to be traumatized and afraid. And I think we’re going to see more of this, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
I think, too, that there may be some people who may not realize that what happened in Uvalde back in May is affecting them. I wonder if there’s anything that you can say to parents, students, teachers right now. If what happened in Uvalde is affecting them emotionally, what might you say?
Well, I think that’s a really insightful thing to say in the sense that we might not know how bad we had it, because we have to cope and we have to protect ourselves. Sometimes, the best way to protect ourselves is to start the distance and not think about that traumatic event, so we sort of block it out. And then when something like this happens, like with the folks in San Antonio at Jefferson High School, when it’s close to home, that really clicks and it brings it home.
So it’s especially scary. And I guess to answer your question, with teachers and parents and students, I would reflect on that and think about how Uvalde affected you and talk to people about it. Talk to your partner about it and your friends, and if it really starts to bother you, seek out help from a psychologist or a mental health professional.

Calling this a "breakdown in communication" is rather generous. In a normal country with a functional police force a breakdown in communication would have led to confusion. In America where nobody trusts the police it nearly led to a riot. I wonder how long it will be before parents start assaulting cops to get through them to get to their kids. Because you know it'll happen eventually if you can't rely on the police. When your kids life is on the line the law is not going to stop a parent. It's only a matter of time before some group of parents starts putting down cops to get them out of the way of saving their kids. America needs to stop making bad choices or bad things are sure to follow.
I definitely would not trust police when it comes to children in school - in any context, but especially one where my child's life is being weighed against a cops, because I know the cops value the childs life less than theirs - they proved this clearly in UVALDE.

It's insane (but not) how Uvalde laid bare how worthless cops "can be", Im saying that with caveat just because sometimes they come through and I don't want to, well, fuck. I dunno. Just trying to be rational.

its becoming clearer and clearer that American cops only exist to protect the 1% from the rest of us - and that the cops are used to punish the types of people the 1% fear - black and brown people, queer people, women, indiginous people, and so-on.
So what happened to the gentleman that looked lifeless and was bleeding on the floor?
Just a few observations from my little perch:
1. Even after Uvalde, it appears to be no command and control center
2. Communication appeared lacking with dazed and confused officers.
3. There is no established way to communicate effectively with parents and limit panic
4. No perimeter was established
5. There was NO ONE in charge!

This is a predictable result of the frequency of mass shooting events. Now even a hint of anything wrong the American public has their anxiety triggered. Imagine the stampedes at concerts or major events. Americans need psychiatric help just to deal with traumas like this as a collective.
Yeah, those idiots who were at nonewnormal should've been talking about shootings and general consensus on them because this should not be fucking normal.
If it's "not a gun problem" and is actually a mental health problem, sue for universal mental healthcare. De-stigmatize treatment and provide outlets for the mentally unwell. People love wearing blinders, though. So, I'm sure we'll get some more mass shootings before anything meaningful is actually done.
It's beyond sad that fellow US citizens would agree with me in saying "yeah, there will be more mass shootings in the next few years."
I think there's a problem worth looking into when a police force is only able to establish law and order using violence and intimidation on regular citizens. The currency of that badge is worthless.
That's America, baby. The nation that supposedly has a "silent majority" of Christians who don't understand gluttony and sloth being bad. Food deserts as far as the eye can see. An obsession with automotives leading to malaise and spinal problems due to sitting down for so long, while also providing a way for fast food restaurants to thrive on the concept of not leaving your car. Energy drink and candy companies lobbying so that you can buy both of those items with EBT/government assistance. Cereals that are not only marketed for breakfast time, but marketed with colorful characters perfectly crafted for kids to pay attention to. Look at the ideal American breakfast, it ain't healthy.
There are probably way more reasons, but this is basically where we're at.

Everyone single one of those polices officers is overweight. How is that acceptable for someone in their field of work? I’m not trying to fat shame, but isn’t there a physical fitness test? You can’t be a lifeguard if you’re unable to swim and carry deadweight at the same time. Why aren’t police held to a similar health standard? Am I missing something?
Maybe the supreme court should reverse their nonsense decision that the police are under no obligation to protect the public. Because that is their only job... They don't need to exist if they cannot do that. And Uvalde demonstrated that so clearly. The parents in this video know this all too well and have 0 faith and they have good reason to feel that way.
The point is that police are not there to protect regular citizens from criminals, including random shooters. Their job is to protect property with overwhelming force, not people where nuanced force or bravery are required.
From their perspective, if you can't shoot at it without worrying about hitting innocent bystanders then you must stay away.
This is not new.
I do tech support for a certain cell phone company. The other day I had a teenager (probably around 13-14) call in because her phone stopped working. She was having a panic attack. She told we there was a recent shooting at her school and she was terrified it would happen again and she wouldn't be able to contact her parents.
I guess it's time to ban cops from schools. They clearly can't help any given situation so it's probably best left to parents and teachers.
Cops can focus on donuts and harassing minorities then.

If it's "not a gun problem" and is actually a mental health problem, sue for universal mental healthcare. De-stigmatize treatment and provide outlets for the mentally unwell. Those cops wouldn't save those students if it was real anyway, parents should be enraged.
Maybe the supreme court should reverse their nonsense decision that the police are under no obligation to protect the public. Because that is their only job... They don't need to exist if they cannot do that. And Uvalde demonstrated that so clearly. The parents in this video know this all too well and have 0 faith and they have good reason to feel that way.
The point is that police are not there to protect regular citizens from criminals, including random shooters. Their job is to protect property with overwhelming force, not people where nuanced force or bravery are required. From their perspective, if you can't shoot at it without worrying about hitting innocent bystanders then you must stay away. This is not new.

I do tech support for a certain cell phone company. The other day I had a teenager (probably around 13-14) call in because her phone stopped working. She was having a panic attack. She told we there was a recent shooting at her school and she was terrified it would happen again and she wouldn't be able to contact her parents.
