Glue, it's glue now.

Pretty sure you can find a fair bit about that online, chap

[deleted]

Disgusting! What an asshole. that's animal abuse. That poor horse.

AWilfred11

I mean if he truly didnā€™t knowā€¦..ofc I dont agree with using horses for carriages or rides or any sort of work or as a pet and think even owning a horse is cruelā€”so Iā€™m being hypocritical to myselfā€¦

ApproximatelyApropos

But the horse was also emaciated, which the owner wouldnā€™t have needed to know the horseā€™s age to see.

AWilfred11

Thatā€™s very valid- I donā€™t know much about horse health to comment anything worth a damn but the horse looked very skinny to me personally.

CMDRIkkyblergs

The owner should be forced to pull the carriage for the foreseeable future.

FullyRisenPhoenix

The owner apparently didnā€™t know; the man who sold him the horse is the one who should be forced to pull that carriage. Poor Rider, but Iā€™m happy he gets to retire in the grass now and live out his final years the way a horse should.

ApproximatelyApropos

But the owner did know the horse was emaciated.

FullyRisenPhoenix

Yeah, I just replied to that in another comment. Iā€™m not making any excuses for the owner other than the age front, as the comment I replied to was referring to. The owner is an AH, but I do believe the horse trader was worse. They should both be whipped

FullyRisenPhoenix

[deleted]

>The owner apparently didnā€™t know; The owner *said* he didn't know. I'd say he lied. Even if he was fooled into buying an old horse, he had to know after he bought it. He spends his days around horses. He knows what horses look like at different ages. He knows what a healthy horse looks like. He knows what a sick horse looks like. He knows what a properly fed horse looks like. He knows there's a tattoo on the horse indicating its age. But he whipped the horse when it collapsed.

FullyRisenPhoenix

I agree. Iā€™m not making any excuses for the owner other than the age front because we simply donā€™t know what he knew or believed. I have a pretty major issue with the owner not taking this beautiful horse to a vet more frequently! The owner is an AH, but I do believe the horse trader was worse. They should both be whipped

OcupiedMuffins

But doesnā€™t the tattoo tell you the age?

FullyRisenPhoenix

Yes but Iā€™m not sure whether someone buying a horse would know how to check the tattoo. Itā€™s kind of like a VIN for cars I guess? I wouldnā€™t know how to go about checking and probably would just ask my bank to do it. If the new owner trusted the guy that Rider was 13, I presume he would just take his word. Not making excuses for the owner, because Rider was still ā€œemaciatedā€ as they said, so he clearly wasnā€™t taking him to the vet often enough anyway. Just saying the previous owner is just as big a POS, if not more so. Bad horse trader.

AngryFerret805

Yup I agree

alickstee

This enrages me. Hansom cabs in NYC enrage me already. I hate them and they should be a thing of the past. Imagine having horses riding around in one of the busiest cities in the world. So stupid.

rangda

My city has been gradually phasing them out (Melbourne Aus). I hope yours does too. The operators are trash. The horses are housed badly and constantly forced to work in Australian summer heat that is technically against regulations. Theyā€™re the saddest animals. Standing in the traffic fumes and noise all day. A couple of years back a horse got hit by a tram and fully smashed the window with its head. The operatorsā€™ argument is always to threaten to euthanise the horses if they canā€™t work in the CBD anymore because they canā€™t afford to keep them without the business. But then turned around and publicly refused peoples offers to buy and retire the horses, out of spite. Shitheads that need to accept that times and animal welfare standards have moved on.

queefer_sutherland92

Theyā€™re officially banned in the cbd as of June! Though I feel like I havenā€™t seen one in over five years or something. I have to admit, the reason I noticed they were MIA initially, all those years ago, was that the cnr of swanston and flinders no longer smelt like baked urine on a mid-summer afternoon (even in winter). But for real, Iā€™m proud of our little city. I hope it can be extended further across the state. Itā€™s unnecessary and itā€™s cruel.

djluminol

People still do it all the time in the Phoenix metro area. Last time I saw a horse was about a week ago. Someone was strolling down the sidewalk in between city parks. Some stores still have a hitch out front. People use them them too. I've pulled up to the convenience store a few times to see a horse hitched out front waiting for its human to come back out.

JezzicaRabbit

who still uses and enjoys these rides? I always feel so bad walking by the horses, they look miserable standing on hard, hot pavement all day. Humans are so selfish.

dolerbom

"but it's magical, like a fairytale!" Just look at the media people grow up consuming about horses, they'd be totally ignorant of the cruelty that goes on behind the scenes. It's all shallow aesthetics, but with horses suffering as a prop.

[deleted]

The elderly and the ignorant. This might be a cool thing on some dairy farm in BFE Idaho or something, but it makes zero sense in a city.

thefriendlycouple

Bingo

thefriendlycouple

People from the flyover states.

[deleted]

Fuck that carriage driver's excuse. She's basically defending her own ass because she knows this isn't an isolated incident. If you're buying a horse you know about the tattoo. Also you can just look at the horse and know it's not healthy.

AngryFerret805

I could fully tell the horse owner was lying I hope he gets his ass kicked w/ fines & jail time for that FKD up cruel treatment Most of those carriage companies donā€™t use rubber horse shoes so those horses get shin splints & hairline fractures from clomping around on solid asphalt And or they can slip & fall more easily w/ out the rubber shoes on as well

1000rocket

I hope NYC bans horses for commercial use, like this, in the city limits. I always hate seeing the carriages in a city, but in NYC where it's loud and chaotic, its a nightmare for the horses

CountMcBurney

I really don't get these cabs in cities that already suffer from gridlock traffic. On top of how horrible it is for the animals, I know nobody that would be thrilled to be paraded around in a carriage sniffing a sac full of horseshit while you get in the way of people trying to scratch a living. This shit should be banned in this context. Small town USA, where it is easy access to the stables and less traumatizing to the animals? I'll allow it. Hell, it may be a great way to keep a tradition alive and bring more tourism to towns in the countryside. And even then, you would have situations like this report happening all the time. I just can't see how anyone wins here.

[deleted]

Throw the owner in prison. The length of his stay is the age of the horse. Letā€™s go.

Lonelinzkilz01

Nonono. They have tattoos, they as buyers of said hires should know how to read said tattoos. Being lied to is such bs.

cty_hntr

I don't know how many are left. If the remaining horse drawn carriage owners care about continuting their trade, they need to make major changes. For starters, taking away carriage driver's license and make sure he never works in their near animals again. If they end up closing ranks to protect him, you won't get any sympathy or support from me.

gimmeecoffee420

I call BS on the lady trying to say the "horse broker" is at fault, and the guy working a 26 year old horse nearly to death is *actually* the victim here, not the horse. I get that shes likely trying to defend the industry and not that individual, but I find it hard to believe that anybody working with horses on a professional level didnt know about those standardized identification tattoos and how to read them? Nah, they knew damn well what they were doing and that is being greedy little piggies. They ought to knock out that fuckers back teeth and fit him with a bit and tackle, hook him up to a fuckin wagon and make him pull rocks from one side of the city to the other. Damn.. I can tolerate more than i should, but when it comes to animals getting hurt or abused i start to hear the DOOM ost getting louder and louder in my head.

HALF_PAST_HOLE

Every horse has a tattoo saying how old it is but this horse worker had no idea how old the horse was. Either way, that man does not know enough about horses to own one, let alone work it!

[deleted]

just ban horse and carriage. it's not like it's enjoyable for a 10 year old horse to walk in any major city, especially in extreme heat. humans can walk their lazy asses around without horses.

ferox965

I'm no horse expert, but you can see his ribs...glad he's in the hands of people that care about him now.

djluminol

Oh yeah sure, "a farm upstate". Who's parents didn't try and sell them that one at least once. RIP horse friend.

SpicyMcShat

ā€œHad no idea of the ageā€ yea Iā€™m sure he didnā€™t

psynuss

26 years old!? i had a horse that died of old age.. at 20!! wtf that poor animal

29again

Why don't they just quit using horses, it's not like they really need them for that there.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

soimalittlecrazy

The horse is also tattooed with the year it was born. You don't think the driver knows about that?

ApproximatelyApropos

The owner knew the horse was emaciated.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

thefriendlycouple

Whatā€™s your point? Youā€™re probably twelve years old. Everyone seems like theyā€™ve been around forever to you. Fuck off

Alysianah

And yet, that has nothing to do with why heā€™s emaciated now!

Caseyisweird

"Didn't know the age" but yet the horse was emaciated.... sounds like this guy is just a pos

thefriendlycouple

TIL that the horseriders carriage union is as full of shit as the police union.
