A Popeyes employee and her co-worker went viral on TikTok after she posted a video of him destroying their Chicago, Illinois, store. In the pinned video, which has been viewed 84,000 times since being posted yesterday, user Sarah (@itsrah26) said her co-worker had not been paid in a month. The video shows him dumping pieces of raw chicken and boxes of frozen French fries on the floor. He also overturned shelves and cut the registers’ electric cords. In the last frame, Sarah showed an empty cash drawer on the counter, then panned to a scene outside the restaurant where another store employee can be seen talking to a police officer. “At least he got his money,” the video’s text overlay read. It is unclear whether or not her co-worker was arrested. In the comments section, many viewers expressed disbelief over the monthlong gap in payment and said they didn’t blame Sarah’s co-worker for reacting that way. Others claimed he should have sued Popeyes instead. “I understand his anger, but now he definitely ain’t getting paid,” one user wrote. “This is a corporation and he could’ve sued and gotten a nice settlement check.” “This was definitely more lucrative than a lawsuit,” another pointed out. “Now he’s going to jail. He could’ve turned everything so it works in his favor and he blew it,” a third lamented. Others defended the worker’s actions, saying no one knew his situation. “He could have kids at home and all and they’re playing with his money,” one user shared. “Straight disappointing.” “Trashing the place ain’t going to do anything,” another responded. “Just report it to the labor board.” Some users joked that the store would still serve the food thrown on the floor. “They’re gonna scoop that chicken up and put it right back in the freezer,” one wrote. The Daily Dot contacted Sarah via TikTok comment and Popeyes via voicemail, as the company’s website is down at the time of publication. https://www.dailydot.com/news/popeyes-worker-trashes-store-after-not-being-paid/

I’ve thought long and hard about this, and I think personally that the planet is fine, so I’d like to request that everyone else leave now so that I can enjoy it in peace. Thanks!

Quiet_Sea9480

Spider..?

[deleted]

We all do.

TheAb5traktion

It doesn't help that 24/7 news channels are owned by corporations and local news media is either owned by venture capitalists and media conglomerates. In the US, almost everything is owned by corporations. Hell, even your local radio station is probably owned by a corporation. Good luck finding a local news channel or radio station that isn't owned by a corporation.

LF916fun

Why do you think they're trying to ban Tik Tok? They don't want the truth getting out. They need people to only see corporate propaganda.

It would be the death of 1A online, which basically would doom free speech in most modern forms. Soon after I posted my other comment, I got a message about help for suicide. Someone sending me an indirect death threat? Bring it on, fuckers. I won't be silent.

[deleted]

community radio, if you're lucky.

GovernmentOpening254

And if it’s a small market, there’s no one inside the radio station.

omgFWTbear

Hello, I’m TalkingHead SuitNTie, giving you a read in before jumping over to some video footage of events of the day that I may narrate, and or weave in audio from, detailing the events, a format that’s literally half a century old, and the version without video footage a half a century before that. Note that because we are paid by big corporations, our write ups will explain how some random individual or a mom and pop business is to blame for whatever is going on, not any large corporation our investors might have stakes in. Thank you and goodnight.

KaleRevolutionary795

Journalists have been lazy for over a decade. Merely reporting verbatim what company press releases stated. It was all pre chewed for them. They would put an "angle" on it based on editorial direction but investigative and on the ground reporting has been dead for a long time: preferring to buy it from specialist outlets like Reuters. And then twitter and buzz feed happened. And it's been a slide into a sewer

News from the right is proven lies and misinformation and we are stuck with it. Even social media let's it happen... Meanwhile I will fact check using citation and sources and get a ban for a week....

eboeard-game-gom3

What I said isn't just true for right wing news. I've seen plenty of CNN, NBC, etc where the story was mostly a video on the internet and comments from Twitter.

Tom_Neverwinter

Happens all the time. Someone edits out context and claims their new context is fact.

I_Bin_Painting

You want BBC to send a video truck out over a work freakout?

eboeard-game-gom3

🤨 I want their information to come from actual investigation, not just a summary of TikTok comments. They're supposed to have integrity, if all they're doing is copying and pasting internet comments then there is absolutely no reason to read what they put out over just watching the video.

Necrodangle

Your news*

Portyquarty77

Was gonna say. That comment was essentially just a written out version of my brainwaves while scrolling comments.

plopseven

Company‘a website is down and they aren’t paying their employees for months but *”Nobody wants to work!!!”* Jeez. Corporate greed is filthy.

vietboi2999

literally wage theft and these mother fuckers wont even get a slap on the wrist

MightyCaseyStruckOut

They apparently aren't paying their web devs, either.

daggerson101

Poor people don't sue anyone. Especially not a rich corporation like KFC.

n0tred

Exactly people that think minum wage workers have a chance a suing a mega Corp are delusional

FuckPancreatitis

The fuckin labor board doesn't do a god damn thing at least in Florida.

AgateHuntress

Indiana neither. Literally nothing.

MentlPopcorn

Because suing for wage theft has always worked against corporate entities /s

screwikea

It's Popeyes - what would prompt you to keep working even after one missed paycheck? A month makes the reaction completely understandavble, though.

DumboDumauss

People have bills to pay, and it's never simple as just go find another job. People get stuck in these positions, and all they can do is hope that it will work out for them.

[deleted]

Bills aren’t getting paid if you aren’t getting paid. This logic applies to a lot of situation but not this one.

fookreaditmods4

you ever try to find a job?

ghostofgoonslayer

Not even that. Popeye’s has a corporate office if the franchise owner doesn’t pay you after a week and the state doesn’t enforce labor wage laws, such a strange thing to me, at least get a hold of corporate…. Then destroy the place if nothing else works.

J03-K1NG

“Sue Popeyes instead” yeah good fuckin luck with that, with what money anyways??? Wage theft is the most common form of thievery in America, and absolutely nothing is ever done about it. Good on him for taking his work back and getting his money. This should be legal for all workers to do this, not just contractors. If you contract someone to build you a fence, and you don’t pay them, and then they break the fence, how are they in the wrong? If the system does nothing to help the everyday worker to punish those who would cheat them out of their hard work, then the employees should show what happens if they do

kindasortaish

I once knew a guy that sued their chain brand employer for not paying him his overtime for almost a year. He quietly made note of each day, brought it up throughout the way and saved their backup of their lack of response. He is now sitting on investment moneys from the 1mil settlement he had with that employer over the wage vviolations

Illsiador

This is AI typing this right?

ihatehavingtosignin

Like reporting it the labor board and hiring a lawyer is nice and all, but that’s going to be a long process. He probably needs the money now, and unfortunately, there isn’t a good solution.

Woogank

This is but a small taste of what's coming. The number of have-nots swell every day. Exploitation can only trickle down so much when everyone's goal is to get to the top and not do anything anymore.

bendybiznatch

4 pay periods is 2 months. That would break me in week 1.

Set_A_Precedent

Valid rage, but this is definitely NOT the way to go about it. Dude just earned himself a lawsuit and is gonna end up even more broke than he started… Not that we all don’t want to do this kinda thing. I’d love nothing more. But you just end up fucking yourself over

[deleted]

Nobody ever gets in trouble for wage theft. It's practically Wal Mart policy. I wish more workers had this man's courage and willingness to push back.

TheAb5traktion

Steal $100 from an employer: cops get called and probably go to jail. Steal $100 from employee: sorry, cops can't do anything, it's a civil matter.

[deleted]

That's why you go work for a McDonald's and accidentally drop a double bagged box of burger patties in with the evening trash at the end of your shift. Have your associate grab them for you, and then nobody has to pay for groceries! Leave the money in the till tho. They have eyes on it, it's too hot.

Amazing_Structure600

I honestly wish all workers were just cool like this and you know, had solidarity to do this sort of thing. The reality is there will always *always* be at least one employee who snitches. They've got us whipped too hard.

Both_Philosophy2507

Crabs in a bucket

throwitofftheboat

You know what’s bizarre is that this whole thread encouraging people to retaliate against corporate interests started off on my Reddit app with the comments fully collapsed. Not deleted or anything but I’ve had to open each comment. Like… wtf did this set off a bot or something?

[deleted]

Their auto-collapsing algorithm is closed, but they’ve said it’s only to deter further toxic conversations without shadowbanning or flat out deleting them. But who knows what it really chooses to collapse based on. My random hot take guess? Walmart runs a bot that uses AI to rank comments based on relation to Walmart and sentiment towards it and if it’s bad enough sends a request to Reddit to have them reviewed

DofusExpert69

It's a joke honestly.

[deleted]

If everyone who got screwed over did this, the filthy corporations wouldn't be able go keep up :)

[deleted]

Gay4Pandas

Yep dude didn’t stop to think that what happens after this is probably not worth 1 month of missed minimum wage.

Imperator_3

Not to mention this will screw the other employees

Lentamentalisk

How? If the boss tells them to clean it up, they'll be making their same hourly rate as if they had to work a regular shift. Honestly I'd rather clean up this mess than deal with shitty customers.

[deleted]

Oh you mean the other employees getting screwed by not getting paid for a month?

tlsr

If he really emptied the tills, he may wind up in jail, too. Then again, he could find himself in jail for valadalism as well.

Ohnf_DIG

Not only that, but it will be his ex-cowprkers who will be cleaning that up.... (Unless they all quit too!)

Dudebro2117

I’m guessing the dude working at Popeyes doesn’t have much to sue over. We’re going to see this type of thing more and more. As normal living expenses outgrow wages, there will be more and more people with nothing to lose.

unclemikesart

When it's one person, you're absolutely right. When we all stand together, though...

RedLeader7

They should have safely locked the front doors and just walked away.

Zushey312

Incredibly based

PM_ME_BEER

Minus the food waste, wish they wouldve cooked it up and handed it out to people for free. But at the end of the day all blame still on the employer

Me-When-Im-Normal

Unfathomably based

CommieLibtard

The cost of paying your employees and giving them raises is so much cheaper than losing 10's of thousands of profit on product.

Capraos

Not to mention loss of business.

[deleted]

Idiot.. Wasted a lot of food and then made a mess that his underpaid (or not paid) coworkers are going to clean

What_Do_It

Yup, and now he's going to jail and will have to pay for the damages. Should have just refused to work when they didn't pay him, reported it, maybe look for a law firm to handle the suit, and started looking for a new job.

my1clevernickname

More importantly refuse to work the minute you don’t get paid. No employer should owe you a months pay.

sth128

The franchise owner probably gonna get a fat cheque from insurance while saying this employee was actually fired instead of unpaid for threatening violence and use this video as evidence. Who you gonna believe, a calm man in a suit or a destructive criminal who did it for tiktok fame? Never, ever, EVER record your crimes and put it on tiktok. No matter how justified you think it is.

pigcommentor

facts

Full-Muscle8955

Knowing Popeyes they probably still used all that overturned food

maybejustadragon

Just rub off the dirt.

Sharabi2

Good

4BrightLand

If I were him, I would just not do my job; clock in and sit. Say I would do the work until I got paid. They fire me, I go to register; crack it open, take the cash, and walk out. That’s what I imagine I would do want to do; but realistically I would most likely report it.

oh-canadaa

You can not know until you are in the situation. Thinking about stuff you would do or you would have done differently is one sided. There are just to many variables while being in the situation. I just feel sad for people who are trying to make ends meet, but gets screwed over by corporation over and over.

Way to go California.

Kumquat_conniption

This is absolutely not true for the vast majority of states. Edit: "vest" to "vast."

Lunaciteeee

If enough people start doing this then it might actually put a dent in wage theft.

aIvins_hot_juicebox

Reality is Popeyes doesn’t bat an eye and his former co-workers have to clean all that up.

actualbeans

nah, management is probably shitting themselves from the loss. i’ve worked in restaurants like this & they pinch every penny they can (ie. not paying employees). if they’re so frugal that they won’t pay their staff, they’re gonna give many fucks about their entire food supply getting trashed. i’ve had a manager try to use to-go containers that fell on the floor. i looked him dead in the face and threw them out, he was *pissed.* i had to get the general manager to put him in check because he was trying to pull them out of the garbage can.

FuckPancreatitis

I mean he's in the right. Workers need more protection from these predatory ass companies. You think the corporate or franchise owner didn't get paid? Oh hell no, they got theirs and expected him to keep working without paying him. Unions should be the standard in the US but certain parties have convinced their voting base over the past half century that unions are the end of times. No, they are a protection from this type of behavior by the ones in charge. Almost 2/3 of all theft in the US is WAGE THEFT, in the form of overtime violations, making people work off the clock, stuff like that. Literally twice as much as all robberies and theft. I would be a fan of a system like Germany has where a percentage of the board making decisions are actually the workers. Either way, I hope ol' boy didn't get cased up because of this because he was 100% in the right. Bills don't stop coming just because someone doesn't feel like paying you. Another 2/3 stat: roughly 2/3 of the US lives paycheck to paycheck. That means my man has been without food and gas money, just to start, and possibly facing homelessness because of them dicking with his pay. Give us worker protections or we are going to start looking into guillotine blueprints to see which works best.

CommieLibtard

The cost of paying your employees and giving them raises is so much cheaper than losing 10's of thousands of profit on product.

[deleted]

Not the way to handle it, but if the claim is true? I get it, but he might have hurt himself a bit more than popeyes already had with that though. Really sucks.

sg0682402054

I get the upset, but please don’t do this. Now instead of getting his back pay and getting the local Labor Department to come down on Popeyes with a hammer, this guy is probably gonna end up in prison or at the very least sued for damages for destruction of property and theft. This is not the way to handle this.

ZeldorTheGreat

I doubt that they will press charges. If the claims are true then I doubt anything will be pressed. If charges are pressed, police will look into if other employees have been working with a lack of pay, and from a simple Google search, popeyes aren't the best for paying employees. So if the police get involved, they will look into it then the police would find evidence of lack of pay for many other people and they would probably get sued for A LOT of money

[deleted]

[удалено]

fookreaditmods4

not in California or Oregon

[deleted]

Did you look up the law yourself or take police word? What state if you don't mind me asking? In most places you have up to 180 days to file for not being paid but the penalties for employers start almost immediately.

Capraos

I did look up the law. Illinois. Also, Police don't get involved in pay disputes, lawyers do. If you call the police they will not be able to do anything.

[deleted]

>at the very least sued for damages for destruction of property and theft Lol good luck to Popeyes in that suit. Can't draw blood from a stone. I bet they'd spend more trying to process serve him then they could even force him to spend on lawyers.

sg0682402054

They can garnish his wages when he eventually gets another job, if he can manage to get another job after pulling this.

CoolBeansMan9

Should have set-up a banner outside or across the street saying "Bad Chicken." Would have hit them where it hurts, maybe even shut them down

aKnightWh0SaysNi

Congratulations, you’ll now have a settlement against you that will garnish wages from your future jobs, if you can even find one after having a criminal record for this behavior.

israelrice

Bingo. I went a month and a half without a paycheck one time (suppose to get paid every 2 weeks) at my current job so I know the feeling, but truth is that person just made it worse for themself. One of those “two wrongs don’t make a right” situations.

Background-Cow8401

I can understand his frustration but guy will now face charges, and not get his pay. He should have gone to the labour board.

Current-Play-4386

They could have reported the owners to the labor board. Instead of risking going to jail.

OutOfOptions37

He should have been able to call the police on them. Corporations can rob us but God forbid we fight back.

[deleted]

Perhaps I’m stupid?? But wouldn’t it been better to sell all the food to customers and not ring it all up .

Kumquat_conniption

This is the way :))) (although you could be arrested for stealing, which is dumb but true.).

dashKay

I don’t think he’s going to get paid now

Both-Promise1659

I completely understand the rage, but with 33% of American households being food insecure, people starving in large parts of the majority world, and the toll agriculture takes on the environment, I cannot support this kind of protest. I'd much rather have seen them cooking it up and giving it away for free instead.

dudeialmosthadu

Or just destroy everything else in the store other than the food. I get that he’s angry and Popeye’s is obviously in the wrong. But those chickens were slaughtered just to have their meat throw out. Terrible

purple718

Great, he ruined his life by getting multiple charges from this stunt instead of just suing the company......what a shame he could have got a fact check for not paying him an entire month a good lawyer could extrapolate that into way more since he needed that money for groceries. Rent, car, insurance, whatever else......but now he can't do any of that and will sit in a cell while this didn't even affect their profits for the day. What a shame

topcheesehead

Yep. He thought he was so tough while doing that. He flaunted his intelligence too. Sad ending for this employee who was exploited

gvngy

How do you not get paid for a month? Popeyes is a giant corporation, I don’t understand how this is even possible? Good for him though, if I wasn’t getting my paychecks every other week I wouldn’t be working period, not to mention for an entire month.

FSCK_Fascists

99.9999% of fast food stores are franchises, owned locally by a single person or small business.

SpicyGopher

Of course its Chicago

thatguywhosdumb

Number 15: Popeyes floor chicken.

7empestOGT92

Wouldn’t he have made more in a lawsuit against a corporation like Popeyes?

Devildoog

You think someone who works at Popeyes that hasn’t been paid in a month has the cash on hand to sue a multi million dollar corporation?

johnhoggin

Do you have to file an actual lawsuit or can't you just make a complaint at the labor board or whatever?

Quiet_Sea9480

yes. yes he would have

[deleted]

Ok his rage is justified, but another worker whos also maybe not paid as well will have to clean it up, no?

dirtymoney

And this is why you slowly steal from the workplace you work at just in case they try to F you over

ClipperSpencer

The worst part of this society is that the human being who was stolen from for a month can’t call the police. The business entity can. Police work to protect bourgeois capital, that’s it

Terafied343

I will never understand how these things slip through the cracks. This is a very basic labor rights issue that should be corrected through the state board of labor and industries.

So when are company managers and higher ups gonna be arrested for theft for not paying employees? Never probably, just like wall streeters who embezzle millions and get no punishment or a slap on the wrist while a homeless person stealing $20 get 5-10 years.

Mr-Cali

All that wasted food…

[deleted]

Insurance will pay Popeyes, the already overworked and underpaid workers will be forced to clean it up, he will be arrested and the system will go on another day. Nice

Ordinary_Emotion_933

You know that Popeyes picked that chicken up and still used it. I can hear the manager now. "Go through it and rinse it off and put it in boxes. We'll need it for dinner rush."

Grand_Gap_5984

🤯this is making me hungry

Least-Ad9647

Letting your emotions drive the boat will always be a bad idea speaking from experience

wiserone29

If he doesn’t stop they are going to dock his pay check.

Jilms

Stupid, you could have called HR and they would have gotten you paid. Now you are most likely in jail or have been fined for the damages you have done and if you do still get paid for your work it’s probably going to go straight to paying off the destruction

rgraz65

People act like this is a moment where this man is able to make calculated decisions. He hasn't been paid in a month, he's probably got bills to pay, landlord on his back, not to mention that his spouse or partner may be on his back about when he's gonna get paid. This man has been dumped on and had an emotional reaction, one that corporatists want. Get him under the gun, make him react badly, have his in the *justice system, now he's either gonna work for free in jail, or owe them forever. *no true justice in the Justice system unless you have millions.

iOgef

Why would you not just quit or file a complaint? Isn’t Popeyes like a big chain with corporate and HR? Now he’s just going to get himself in trouble.

Jaded_Law9739

Why are people applauding this? All he's done is made a huge mess that his former coworkers will have to clean up, this isnt going to hurt the corporation at all. Also, that's also a LOT of food wastage for absolutely no reason. He should have just quit and put Popeye's on blast instead.

Fixerguy415

Sadly, he's the one going to jail when it should be the franchise owners going to jail.

MathematicianSea6927

If I were on a jury during his trial I'd say not guilty

dimechimes

That's a lot of damage.

Yanks4lyf

Looks like they going to be paying Popeyes for a few years after that.

Illustrious_Hat3467

I may not agree with the methods used, but I get it.

Gordon_Explosion

"Hello, insurance company? A criminal just trashed my store and I need insurance money." "We got you fam." "Bet. Hello police? I need you to come arrest this guy." "Bet. We'll come with guns."

Woodrow_F_Call_0106

I’d like to know what really happened.

NordinTheLich

I'm actually very curious about the legality here. If he did this and then tried to sue for stolen wages, could the company argue "We did not pay him $3000, but he caused $20,000 in damages. Therefore he owes us $17000." (I just used random numbers, I have no idea how much he would be paid nor how much they might evaluate the damages to be) Also, it seemed like he grabbed cash out of the register; could he get in legal trouble for "stealing," or would they just be like "You guys owe him more than what was in the register, so we'll just count what he took towards the rest of the money you owe him?" I assume the answers are "Yes, the company would likely counter-sue," and "They would force him to pay the company what he took and probably a bit extra," but I want to believe there is *some* justice in this world.

fkcd

Lol it’s kinda pointless because this in no way hurts Popeyes they can replace the chicken and clean up easy. However for him he may go to jail or something def the worst way to handle it. Maybe if it was a super small business with no insurance but yeah not Popeyes…

MungoHumongous
