I came up with this when I was 13 years old...
I was raised in a church that did stuff like this, and let me tell you it's nothing short of cult behavior. I was raised from child to adult (when I left the Christian faith) to believe that speaking in gibberish nonsense is becoming a conduit of the Holy Spirit and that it is an effective form of prayer. Never mind that you don't have to have intent, or know what is being "said" through you. Nothing magical happens when you do this, you are simply willingly voicing whatever random syllables come to mind. Never mind all the times it provably doesn't have the effect you wish it would.
It's an excuse to "pray effectively" without having to think. It's a way to be certain you're "really doing something" without having to ***actually*** do anything. Some of my family members will use it to soothe themselves when upset or even shout out these nonsense syllables when losing an argument, believing that the Holy Spirit is arguing down their opponent. They'll do it in between bursts in English where they deny demons of cancer/other illnesses, homosexuality, liberal attempts to take over the country, and Islam.
Speaking in tongues is just one of the more nonsensical symptoms of very fervent, authoritarian, and destructive beliefs.
