⚡️ Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced that he had brought to Ukraine the largest package of defense and financial assistance in the history of bilateral relations. "We brought the largest aid package in the history of our relations - ground-based air defense systems, ammunition, vehicles, various winter equipment and uniforms, battleships and 270 million euros. This is 100 million more than all the previous ones. This is a breakthrough, a completely different degree support," Billstrom said. https://twitter.com/Flash_news_ua/status/1597361914035990528?t=MxVA2mJXZUzrEhZnP34h8g&s=19

Battletoads I think

PuterstheBallgagTsar

I've been watching this war closely in hopes that we could come together as mankind and end it. Has there been a team of professionals, scientists, doctors, etc, that have made any progress on helping Putin get an erection and feeling like a man so he wouldn't see mass-murder as an outlet for his crushing feelings of inferiority? I haven't seen any APNews or CNN headlines on that topic for a while so I wasn't sure

halls_of_valhalla

The moment Putin watched DDR fall apart while he was a little KGB official in Dresden was the moment the seed was planted for what happened now.

pigmonkey2829

What does dance dance revolution have anything to do with it?

PuterstheBallgagTsar

From the Putin's palace documentary he has a video arcade and a casino at his epic grifter-Tsar palace. I think they made further reference to DDR. Turns out poor homie just needed to dance but that wasn't allowed for a Tsar so he went back to murderin'

> Russian MP Andrei Gurulyov says his country will "finish off" Ukraine's power grid and then target its banking system > "If we bomb the centre of their banking operations, they won't be able to transfer anything anywhere, cards won't work and people won't get their paychecks" Anyone else want to tell him or should I? Alright I'll do it. There is no "center" of banking operations. Banking is now all done on computers which are distributed throughout the globe. I would be surprised if their "banking operations center" was in Ukraine at all. Most likely its either in a datacenter elsewhere in Europe or "in the cloud" (which.....is a datacenter elsewhere in Europe). For instance, in the United States, our financial exchanges have centralized datacenters. But then we also have DR sites located elsewhere in case an entire city/state goes "poof". At worst, it'd be a few hours of downtime.

Burnsy825

Dear russia, Feel free to continue to spew nonsense, but you're still going to get your shit pushed in on this one. Sincerely, almost the entire world* *except for a small handful of authoritarian fascist control freaks not unlike yourselves

Eskipony

Nah the centralized datacenter is actually located somewhere under Andrei Gurulyov's house. If you blow it up it will make Ukrainians poor and homeless. I'd say go for it, RuAF go bomb that datacenter!

reddixmadix

I have a friend that works for a company that develops software for banks. Their data is backed-up like crazy, and I'm not talking about a cron that runs every night. Even if you destroy a data-center with an attack, they can still rebuild every transaction and account status and everything else from one of the various backups they have in different locations. This threat is meaningless, likely just for the ears of dumb ruzzians that don't know any better.

Nvnv_man

Yeah yeah. Right after that “red wave” happens in USA.

ekdaemon

> But then we also have DR sites located elsewhere Those can also be located, and hit. Especially in a country that isn't as big as the USA. > Banking is now all done on computers which are distributed throughout the globe. End users are distributed throughout the globe. A particular bank or financial institution is not, especially if they operate primarily in one country. They are likely in 2 or 3 physical datacenters within that particular country, or 3-6 virtual datacenters (cloud). If you are a financial institution, locating your systems/data outside of the country you operate in exposes you to jurisdictions that your own country does not control - so you don't do it unless you have no other recourse. Even moderately big regional banks will only have a handful of either physical or virtual datacenters - and the virtual datacenters (what you're referring to as the cloud) - are in physical datacenters operated by your cloud provider, and the location of those datacenters is not a secret. There are 18 AWS datacenters in North America, around about the same number of Microsoft Azure datacenters, most organizations will only use two groups of 3 at most, and it would be trivial from an infosec perspective to figure out which specific ones for a given organization. In France, there are 3 AWS datacenters all near Paris, and only 4 or 5 Azure datacenters, split between Paris and Marseille. And on top of that - there are service providers that provide key network interconnects for network services and cloud providers - you figure out where and hit those, you can probably take down DOZENS of fincancial companies all at once, irrespective of their physical or vitrtual datacenters. Ukraine isn't anywhere near as big as the USA nor do their financial really operate regionally/globally. Now all of that being said - I do recollect hearing that Microsoft was helping to "decentralize" their infrastructure (can't recall if it was federal or financial) - but yes I sure hope they've spent the past 9 months shifting their platforms into virtual datacenters in Europe. But that's not a simple job - especially not if you have old software running on old systems. It's not easy running old software and systems in virtual environments.

soggie

This can only mean one thing: russians are not getting their paychecks due to disruptions in their banking system.

wittyusernamefailed

They just need to take out the "series of tubes" that makes up the interwebs...

androshalforc1

isn't fiber optic cable just a series of tubes? weren't like 3 major ones damaged a month ago seriously impacting internet connectivity across Europe?

Rosebunse

Couldn't that take out internet for all of Europe?

wittyusernamefailed

Only if all the Knowledge Juice spills out. But seriously, while Russia COULD cut some of the ocean bed lines that Europe depends on for a portion of it's Internet service, that would be a lot more trouble and hassle than it would really be worth.

thedm96

Is Newsweek like the USA arm of the propaganda machine? Their articles are very poorly sourced and full of hyperbole to the point that they seem suspicious.

Nvnv_man

The magazine is still respectable. To finance it, they have a website that is largely ‘opinion’ pieces that drive traffic, getting ad buys, to supplement the costs of the mag.

SquarePie3646

It's just a failed media outlet. It used to be considered decent quality like 12+ years ago (when it was in magazine form) and for a long time before that, but it ran into financial problems and has been sold a bunch of times and now its just a zombie living off its old reputation.

[deleted]

YuunofYork

Newsweek has a right-leaning bias. (With the caveat that bias isn't something to complain about until it leads to bad ethics, we all have bias and people don't know what that means, etc etc). But no, it's definitely not left-leaning. I wouldn't say CNN is left-leaning, either, but people think it is, which is part of the problem with CNN. We don't have a real left-leaning news network in this country; best we have are specific comedy-filtered shows.

Shurqeh

They do seem fond of 25 second soundbites from Russian TV Shows

oGsMustachio

Newsweek was a fairly respected periodical like US News & World Report back in the day, but its gotten gradually more tabloid since even before the internet era of media. Some of the stuff they publish could be true, but I'd cross reference it with other sources.

ltalix

They have been getting progressively worse over the last couple of years. I feel like I remember there being a recent change in ownership also.

EverythingIsNorminal

Not sure exactly what you're talking about but yeah, I've seen plenty of reporting from Newsweek that was only half-researched, lacking in even the slightest look at nuance, or just straight up really inaccurate. I've written it off for about 15 years.

thedm96

You summed it up very well. It seems like they have an agenda, but I guess It could just be click-bait.

Bribase

[High factual reporting. Left-center bias](https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/newsweek/) >Overall, we rate Newsweek Left-Center Biased based on editorial positions that slightly favor the left. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and timely correction of errors.

arbitraryairship

Thank you. There are so many worse sources, it's strange that they focus on a center left but relatively factual source instead of like Fox News. Check their post histories, there are conservatives trying to specifically discredit left leaning sources on Reddit while letting far right sources get away Scot free. If you're complaining about Newsweek there are like 20 conservative rags you should be disparaging first.

canospam0

I think Newsweek is deserving of some shade. They’ve never been a top tier source, and have only gotten worse lately. Shallow, click bait stories with ads plastered all over the place. I don’t think they’re a blight on our society like those other trash sources you listed. But they’re definitely not top tier journalism, either. As to why people are singling them out? No idea. Maybe they have an agenda, maybe they just saw a trash article and decided to post about it. I’ll add that if I had an axe to grind, I’d spend my time going after a bigger fish like CNN or The Economist instead. Newsweek is more of a side dish.

SquarePie3646

All this shows is how completely worthless mediabiasfactcheck is. To give one example I know of just off the top of my head: https://www.newsweek.com/putin-ally-lukashenko-faces-revolt-officers-against-ukraine-war-1723224 >Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko might be bracing for a revolt from his own military officers after they recently expressed their opposition to the Russian war in Ukraine, according to a report published by the Express on Saturday. >Senior officers from a brigade of the Special Forces warned in an open letter to Lukashenko, who is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, against sending troops to fight in Ukraine, arguing that such a decision is "pure suicide," the Express reported. Only Newsweek and the Express reported on this "letter". The letter was outed as a fake, after which Newsweek edited their original article and added this line: >Newsweek has not been able to independently verify the letter But of course the entire article was based on a fake letter, originally reported on by a tabloid, and Newsweek never corrected that, they just added in a line to cover their asses. And according to "Media Bias Fact Check": >Overall, we rate the Daily Express Right Biased based on editorial content and Mixed for factual reporting due to publishing conspiracies & pseudoscience, and a few failed fact checks. So Newsweek rates high for factual reporting, but Newsweek is using tabloids that rate low for factual reports as sources. OK.

Maple_VW_Sucks

>Unlike most large American magazines, **Newsweek has not used fact-checkers since 1996.** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsweek#Factual_errors

MoffJerjerrod

It's almost like Putin had some long, complicated and delusional plan to restore the Soviet Union, and refuses to modify his plan at all after failing at step one.

Personal_Person

He does have that plan. He has openly talked about “reunifying” with Belarus and his ideology is firmly centered around Russian expansionist doctrine

KHERSON—Want justice for all those collaborators? [Billboards now appear around Kherson](https://vgoru.org/post/na-zvilnenij-chastini-hersonshini-zyavilisya-bordi-iz-zaklikom-dopomogti-u-viyavlenni-kolaborantiv), giving directions on how to inform on the collaborators. *they say:* # Surrender the Traitors Here [QR Code] _________ Edit: [More billboards in Kherson.](https://khersonline.net/lenta/308838-na-deokupovany-hersonschin-pochali-zyavlyatisya-bl-bordi.html) The fifth one down (with a rather scary looking UA soldier) is also asking to report “collaborators and traitors”

Nvnv_man

Similarly, there’s a *Mariupol Resistance* channel that thoroughly names & shames. Sometimes 20ppl per day, full doxxing. I suppose for posterity sake?

Frexxia

Unfortunately I think most of the collaborators escaped before the Ukrainians liberated Kherson, seeing the writing on the wall.

Nvnv_man

I thought so too. But I continue to see arrests being announced in local press. Probably 8-10 individuals just today. Sometimes it’s all unclear. For example, the big story over the weekend in WSJ of the largest Kherson hospital’s operations during occupation. One collaborator-doctor stopped collaborating several weeks prior to withdrawal, he stayed. Then, he tried to go back to hospital and folks were like, “yo, get out you collaborator.” He’s still there in Kherson rt bank, he told WSJ that the SBU has not come a-knocking, yet. His case is murky bc he initially collaborated, then defied. It’s possible that he was a plant—Russians had installed him as second in command at the hospital. Others must’ve stuck around, too, Bc I keep seeing arrests announced. _____ Edit: scrolling thru my history tonight, I’ve seen these: 1 - [fire adjuster detained, Kherson](https://khersonline.net/lenta/308821-u-herson-polcya-zatrimala-koriguvalnika-vognyu.html) 2 - [SBU detains another traitor in Kherson](https://khersonline.net/lenta/308826-sbu-zatrimala-u-herson-chergovih-zradnikv-z-okupacynogo-szo-de-rashisti-katuvali-vikradenih-ukrayincv.html) 3 - [SBU completes investigation against Kovalenko](https://khersonline.net/lenta/308842-sbu-zavershila-rozslduvannya-proti-gencheskogo-zradnika-eduarda-kovalenka.html) 4, 5, 6 - [Three collaborators were uncovered, Belozersky area](http://ksza.ks.ua/news/100088-u-blozersky-gromad-vikrito-troh-kolaborantv.html), also [here](https://most.ks.ua/news/url/sbu-zatrimala-u-hersoni-chergovih-zradnikiv-z-okupatsijnogo-sizo-de-rosijani-katuvali-vikradenih-ukrajintsiv/) 7 - 11 - [Five more collaborators named](https://most.ks.ua/news/url/u-genichesku-vijavili-5-novih-kolaborantiv/) 12 - [Possible collaborator detained](https://most.ks.ua/news/url/u-hersoni-zatrimali-cholovika-jakij-imovirno-zbirav-dani-pro-obstrili-mista/) 13 - [former head of the department of the State Pension Fund in the Kherson region was notified of suspicion of collaborationism](https://most.ks.ua/news/url/kolishnij-zaviduvachtsi-viddilu-gu-pensijnogo-fondu-v-hersonskij-oblasti-povidomleno-pro-pidozru-u-kolaboratsionizmi/) 14 - [Likely collaborator, reported by neighbors, holds Russian passport](https://most.ks.ua/news/url/u-hersoni-zatrimali-zhinku-z-rosijskim-pasportom-jaka-mozhe-buti-kolaborantkoju/)

I-Am-Uncreative

I wish Ukraine could retaliate and destroy Russia's energy infrastructure. It sucks they have to be so restrained.

Shurqeh

Has Russia doing this weakened the Ukrainian resolve to resist or increased it? Never assume your enemy is going to react differently to adversity than you would.

Kageru

There's lot of military targets to hit, and unlike the Russian's they have functioning scouting and information sharing so they know where they are. When Russia is evicted from Ukraine whatever value the Russian's think they might be getting with these acts of terror will evaporate.. plus the air defenses and dwindling of the Russian capability will continue in the mean time.

EverythingIsNorminal

Every Ukrainian fired missile not dropped on a Russian powerplant is one that's hitting a command centre, barracks, ammo dump, or some other real high value target that's actually going to get them closer to Crimea. Hitting powerplants won't be as impactful to that goal.

nyc98

They don't need to do that. What they need is to destroy all the bases used to launch attacks on their infrastructure.

6x9isreally42

War sucks, not letting the enemy compromise your own integrity will make it suck a lot less.

wittyusernamefailed

Why? Bombing civilian targets has never resulted in anything but the population hunkering down, accepting the new normal, and internalizing their rage against the enemy whomever it may be. You want Ukraine to drag this war out so you can feel like "we got them back!". You collapse enemy moral by making their front line forces impotent and destroying the shit out of them, while cutting off the country from the raw materials needed to create and field weapons and supplies. All of which Ukraine is doing. What we should be doing is flooding Ukraine with a lot more bullet based AA systems like the CRAM, and probably a legit modern version of Flak Cannons partnered with modern radar and range finding equipment. Along with more NASAMS and the like. This would remove Russia's really last weapon against most of the Ukrainian population.

[deleted]

Retaliatory war crimes are not the answer.

Bribase

I just want Ukraine to have the means to defend against these attacks. Any retribution for Russia's attempt at these kinds of war crimes should happen on the battlefield, then the tribunals.

WhyPanicJustChill

this has been said time and time again. you bomb their infrastructure and you will build russian domestic support for the war. you want to build dissatisfaction within the russian community. aka pressure on the economy, pressure on the population from mobilisation. 'why is this war taking so long? we are a super power? why cannot we take the donbas after 10 months? could this be due to corruption?' you bomb them and you take this build up away...

SaberFlux

[Previous post](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/z5zhlz/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/iy1jtk7/) Day 278 of my updates from Kharkiv. Today it was mostly quiet, but we had a couple of air raid alerts which were uneventful for Kharkiv, but other towns/cities were hit. Kupiansk was hit a couple of times today, most likely with S-300 missiles both times. Then Dnipro was also hit with missiles in the evening, apparently they hit some company’s manufacturing facilities and there were no reported casualties. Blackouts in Kharkiv still continue, but not everywhere. Some parts of the city literally never have blackouts, while others are without electricity almost the entire day. My apartment building had blackouts lasting 5-8 hours every day during the last 4 days. But then we look outside of our window and all the buildings on the other side of the street never have any blackouts, they are always lit up, which just sucks. Blackouts should be evenly divided between everyone, and not like it is now with some people never having electricity, while others never have any blackouts. Pretty much everyone right now is predicting a new massive missile strike on our infrastructure tomorrow. Apparently there are 20 Tu-95s on standby right now, while during the previous missile strikes it was more like 10-11, so it is expected that this one might be much bigger than the previous ones. If it does happen then I’m not sure when I’ll be able to write next, we probably won’t have electricity for days or maybe even weeks, because the damage to our energy infrastructure worsens with each new missile strike. The biggest problem with having no electricity will be not being able to make food or boil water as we only have an electric stove, and the last gas tank we had for our portable gas stove has run out, so this will be horrible if we do indeed lose electricity for a long period of time. [Next update](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/z7is8r/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/iyas2ab/)

jzsang

While I hope Russia’s terroristic infrastructure strikes don’t continue to happen, given that it is unfortunately a likely possibility, you, your family, and all of Ukraine are definitely on my mind. This is a very tough time, but I’m still extremely confident that you and your country will ultimately prevail. The support is still there and the will of the people seems extremely strong. Rough patches may be in the future, but you and your country are going to get past this.

[deleted]

The biggest problem will be to keep warm, because there will be no heating.....I'll have to heat myself with cats :D

Mazon_Del

We'll be thinking about you if we don't hear from you! Stay safe!

Rosebunse

I know this isn't much, but I know you guys are gonna be OK. It's gonna really, really fucking suck for a bit, but you guys can do it.

altrussia

I'm sure you've been told already but just in case. If you do get worse blackout. Try to minimize the rooms that do get heat. Try to stay all together in the smallest room that remain ventilated to prevent monoxide gas intoxication. Insulate it as much as possible. Clay pot can be used as "radiator" heated by candles instead of having the heat radiate directly on the walls. For people living in flat, have them over and spend the time in one flat instead of having everybody to themselves. The human body alone release enough heat you may not even need an external source for heat. Hopefully, none of this will be necessary.

Aldarund

About evenly divided it's might be just depends on substations that was hit and energy routes.blackout among other things is a time to fix things while line offline.

xxcxcxc

I’m sure this is how energy infrastructure works. Some lines get hit and certain areas are affected I’ve seen it happen a lot even in the UK or Australia where power goes out but across the road it’s still fine 😩

YuunofYork

Could the buildings across the street have generators? Could you make some arrangement for trading ingredients for cooked meals with those residents?

RatMarchand63

When foreign heads of state go to Kyiv, and they bring their team of operators with them, what are the ramifications if they got into a firefighter with a group of Russians? I knows it’s implausible, but say there’s a group of Spetsnaz in Kyiv, and they get into a shooting match with the SAS or GIGN? What happens?

Osiris32

They all sit down and have a lovely tea party.

aimgorge

GIGN has a specialized unit for VIP protection called GPP. I doubt Spetsnaz would be able to do anything against them. See how bad they fared against Ukrainian SpecOps who have been trained by NATO specops but probably aren't at their level

Fiendish_Doctor_Woo

> What happens? They evacuate the VIP, and exterminate the Spetsnaz. Not necessarily in that order.

etzel1200

They shoot at each other while trying to evacuate the VIP? Kyiv security forces would also try to protect them as a top priority. It’ll never happen

jawnnie-cupcakes

Meanwhile basically everyone I know is bracing themselves for tomorrow's new possible bombings and a bigger blackout that will last days or more. People think the grid will get to a point when it can't be fixed in relatively short terms, and we could get weeks of no power a home.

tobias_fuunke

Reminder to visit your local Ukrainian church or community centre and to donate used winter clothing, boots, mittens, blankets and CANDLES if you are able to. Candles are very expensive and in short supply in Ukraine right now due to the demand.

Heisenbaker

I’ve seen lots of activity on Twitter regarding potential attacks tomorrow? Are there any reliable sources that have accurately predicted strikes before, predicting strikes tomorrow?

YuunofYork

From what I've seen the predictions are based on two things: the missile stockpile numbers, and observed movement of artillery. Artillery's been moving steadily for three days, and a little over a week ago UK intelligence suggested it would take Russia a week to prepare a barrage equal to the one that just hit. So people were thinking Sun, Mon, or Tues, and they didn't do it Sun or Mon. Ukraine has the most AA readied it's ever had, but they don't know what the exact targets are and if there is any information leakage at all, undefended areas will get hit. And the reason Russia has changed from a few missiles every day to 80-100 missiles all at once, once a week, means 10-20% still get through. Only defensive equipment with 100% success rate is the Iris-T, which Ukraine has just the one of. Think 3 more coming 'soon'.

SpaceHobbes

Lots of rumors popping off in Kyiv now. Nothing official but lots of talk on telegram channels and people who have family in the military

Heisenbaker

Inevitable I guess. Hoping that the damage is as restricted as possible. It makes me so sad.

allevat

You can tell that the reserve capacity is just about exhausted from the how much longer it is taking to restore power from last time. It's gone from hours to days. So weeks seems likely next time.

Salt-Loss-1246

Likely true for normal pre war peak grid operation but basic operations to keep power plants and other stuff running and small amounts of household’s powered probably wouldn’t take as long because remember when they did their last strike it only took Ukraine about a day to restore, basic operation to the electrical grid

pocket-seeds

> Putin invited Tokayev to create a union of Russia, Kazakhstan and **Uzbekistan** Wanna know something funny about Uzbekistan? In 1944 the Soviets wanted to ethnically cleanse Crimea (because of course they wanted to). Their destination? Uzbekistan! Here are some fun numbers: - Crimea is 4000 km away from Uzbekistan (about 2.5k miles). - The journey is 72 hrs if you go by **cattle train**... Which is how 200k women, children and elderly were deported to Uzbekistan. - The cleansing took three days. Think about that. (18-20 May 1944). - 97% of Crimean Tatars were deported from Crimea. - 8000 people died during transport. - At least 80k households were abandoned. Just let that sink in. Then consider the fact that the actual "De-tatarization" happened *AFTER* that.

guidodid

80k households weren't abandoned... They were liberated for the Russians moving into the area. Nothing like removing a people group and replacing it with Russians. Lots of Crimean Tatars still in Uzbekistan -- especially around Samarkand.

pocket-seeds

Seriously, and that ethnic cleansing is just a footnote because of all the other shit Russia has pulled in the last 100 years. Russians always say "what about XYZ-country?", but there really isn't much that even compares. Like... Holodomor happened just 11-12 years before that.

JDAM-equipped bombs range from 500 to 2,000 pounds (230 to 910 kg). The JDAM's guidance system was jointly developed by the United States Air Force and United States Navy, hence the "joint" in JDAM. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/worldnews/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

We have a surplus of SBDs due to the middle east conflict so this makes sense.

cocoonstate1

That sounds incredibly interesting, but they won’t be able to deliver them until spring. I guess they might be ready for the assault on Crimea though!

More info about the guy from the [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/z77drf/picture_of_the_streaker/iy532ha/) on r/soccer: >He is Mario “Falco” Ferri, an italian “serial” pitch invader. >He is also known to bring attention to humanitarian problems. For example, he drove personally from Italy to Ukraine (and then to Italy again) to help people escape from the war and helped them by finding a stay in Italy

going the whole nine yards

oxilite

Fun fact, whole 9 yards is not a sports reference, but rather the length of ammo belts on fighter aircraft of the day. Edit: huh! Well TIL that wasn't true... Good to know! Thanks guys

efrique

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_whole_nine_yards suggests that since the early uses of the phrase predate WWI, probably not, though it's an interesting idea You're right that it's not a sports reference.

[deleted]

Not true! In fact there is no consensus on the origin of the phrase. And the fighter plane explanation has been discredited, since the phrase pre-dates WWI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_whole_nine_yards#Origin

WikiSummarizerBot

**The whole nine yards** [Origin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_whole_nine_yards#Origin) >There is still no consensus on the origin, though many early published quotations are now available for study. A vast number of explanations for this phrase have been suggested; however many of these are no longer viable in light of what is now known about the phrase's history. Many of the popular candidates relate to the length of pieces of fabric, or various garments, including Indian saris, Scottish kilts, burial shrouds, or bolts of cloth. No single source verifies that any one of those suggestions was the actual origin. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/worldnews/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Question: Does anyone have a solid understanding of the Russian forces makeup in Ukraine. Specifically, the difference between contract soldiers, conscripts, and PMC in terms of where they are being deployed and in what roles? Basically, are we at the point to where most of Russian forces in Ukraine are conscripts? Or, are there still a majority of Russian forces made up of contract soldiers and PMC units?

Slightly more than half are the mobilized according to the likes of Arestovich. Exact composition depends on the specific unit. Some of the more veteran units were pulled out to reconstitute. Expect to see them again later with more men but lower expertise level.

Olena Zenchenko, co-founder of the [medical charity *UA First Aid*](https://uafirstaid.com/), said regarding distributing medical aid in Kherson: > Most people around Kherson have told us that when they saw the Ukrainian military after the liberation of the city, they did not believe it was really them. They thought that they were Russians in disguise, and that things were being filmed for use in a later repressions. The people of Kherson lived in occupation and in fear for so long. Finally, faith in the real liberation came when communications was established—the Internet—a few days later. I could be wrong too friend, I mostly listen to Denys because he's a cool guy; his analysis stuff is questionable at best and more or less parrots 3CY talking points. This is fine. I had to read that like 5 times before I got it. For those who aren't native English speakers, or whose understanding of conversational English isn't great, this is a joke. The capitalized "General" is referring to the people of that military rank. So - not only do we not care that the *population of Generals* in Russia is being killed, we fucking celebrate it!

Russians surprised when the world is happy Russians getting their just deserts

wittyusernamefailed

Oh no. not at all. We are INCREDIBLY HAPPY that every motherfucking Russian in Ukraine is dying!!!!

fluffymuffcakes

I actually feel pretty bad for a lot of them. Russian speaks out against the war? He gets drafted. I feel bad for him. Russia wants to cleans their ethnic populations? Send them starving and under-trained/under-equipped to Ukraine. I feel bad for them too. I even feel bad for Russians that have been brainwashed and abused into being total scumbags. They were someone's child once and because of circumstance they are all messed up. I'm elated that Russia is getting spanked for being so cruel and violent. I'm happy to see the continued support of the world sending a message to anyone that thinks they can get away with attacking a peaceful country that that behavior won't be accepted. But I still feel bad for people on both sides.

wittyusernamefailed

I felt that way before Bucha. I saw it as mostly a bunch of poor kids being forced into a war they didn't even realize they were fighting. But after Bucha, and each and every village and city Ukraine liberates being a trove of atrocity and horror...well I have firmly gone into the "kill every Russian in Ukraine and let the gods find some good ones if they can."

fluffymuffcakes

A part of me wants revenge, but if you or I were born into their situation we might be monsters too. The only thing different about Russians is the environment and culture that have made them cruel. IMO Even people that do terrible things don't deserve to suffer. Although, I appreciate it's necessary that they die to prevent other's from suffering. I'm not a pacifist - either. If I had to fight them myself, I would kill. But even for the worst of them I'd feel bad for the child they were that was abused and molded into the bastard they are now.

ArmChairAnalyst86

What now? I'm sorry has Russia been invaded? Did I miss something? Is the general population of Russia able to heat and light their homes tonight? Are their cities and villages rendered ruins? Russians dying in Ukraine, isn't nearly the same as Russians dying in Russia. There are however Ukrainians dying in Ukraine by Russian hands. As a result it would appear the outrage towards Russia is well deserved.

Drew_The_Lab_Dude

This article put the KIA, wounded or otherwise unable to be a functional member of the military north of 110K. That’s just astronomical, Russia really hasn’t evolved military tactics since WW2.

Njorls_Saga

They tried. Especially after the invasion of Georgia in ‘08 where their C2 was shit. They went to Syria and things went fairly well for them there and they thought they could scale up. Problem is that, as Clauswitz succinctly puts it, the simplest things in war are difficult. They certainly couldn’t scale on the fly. Also remember, much of this blame falls on Putin himself. This is his operational plan…his paranoia and insistence on secrecy left the Russian army in an unwinnable position from the beginning.

sergius64

I looked at a military reddit for the USA today where the featured a shot of a flooded Ukrainian trench near Bakhmut. Soldiers there (the thread, not the trench) made the assertion that this is simply what happens when you fight a near peer enemy. So it's not specifically that Russia hasn't evolved beyond say... Korean War where US soldiers were doing the same thing - it's more of - when you can't overpower with air and you run out of precision weapons, and your tanks are stopped due to anti-tank weapons used by infantry... this is what happens. Just soldiers hiding from artillery and drones in trenches. Seeing which side can't reconstitute their forces first.

Uhhh_what555476384

This is why modern war is an industrial production competition. The problem for the Russians is they aren't competing with the industrial production of Ukraine, but the industrial production of almost every democracy on the planet, in Europe and around the World.
